Atmospheric-Moisture-Induced Polyacrylate Hydrogels For Hybrid Passive Cooling, Roisul Hasan Galib, Yanpei Tian, Yue Lei, Saichao Dang, Xiaole Li, Arief Yudhanto, Gilles Lubineau, Qiaoqiang Gan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Heat stress is being exacerbated by global warming, jeopardizing human and social sustainability. As a result, reliable and energy-efficient cooling methods are highly sought-after. Here, we report a polyacrylate film fabricated by self-moisture-absorbing hygroscopic hydrogel for efficient hybrid passive cooling. Using one of the lowest-cost industrial materials (e.g., sodium polyacrylate), we demonstrate radiative cooling by reducing solar heating with high solar reflectance (0.93) while maximizing thermal emission with high mid-infrared emittance (0.99). Importantly, the manufacturing process utilizes only atmospheric moisture and requires no additional chemicals or energy consumption, making it a completely green process. Under sunlight illumination of 800 W …

Birth Right: Does A Lack Of Access To Health Coverage For Fertility Treatment For Single Individuals And Same-Sex Couples Constitute Discrimination?, Quinn Kobrin
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
There are often great costs associated with receiving fertility treatments such as IVF. Those who wish to overcome infertility and conceive may turn to their health insurance providers to find coverage for such treatments. Currently, many health insurance providers’ policies require that those seeking coverage show infertility either by (1) failing to conceive after six to twelve months of unprotected sexual intercourse; or (2) failing to conceive after six to twelve months of receiving fertility treatment. Advocates argue that such policies are discriminatory because classes of people such as same-sex couples and single individuals1 who wish to conceive cannot do …

Brunet: Disruption-Tolerant Tcp And Decentralized Wi-Fi For Small Systems Of Vehicles, Nicholas Brunet
Brunet: Disruption-Tolerant Tcp And Decentralized Wi-Fi For Small Systems Of Vehicles, Nicholas Brunet
Master's Theses
Reliable wireless communication is essential for small systems of vehicles. However, for small-scale robotics projects where communication is not the primary goal, programmers frequently choose to use TCP with Wi-Fi because of their familiarity with the sockets API and the widespread availability of Wi-Fi hardware. However, neither of these technologies are suitable in their default configurations for highly mobile vehicles that experience frequent, extended disruptions. BRUNET (BRUNET Really Useful NETwork) provides a two-tier software solution that enhances the communication capabilities for Linux-based systems. An ad-hoc Wi-Fi network permits decentralized peer-to-peer and multi-hop connectivity without the need for dedicated network infrastructure. …

Deep Ocean Vehicle Applications And Modifications, Nichole "Nikki" T. Arm
Master's Theses
This project had two primary goals: (1) to explore opportunities to further a deep-ocean vehicle’s reach using alternative pressure spheres, and (2) to implement an existing deep-ocean vehicle (lander) in active scientific research.
I gained a greater understanding of the limitations and design choices made for existing pressure spheres using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). My simplified FEA model predicted sphere failure for the existing 30% Fiber Glass 70% Nylon injection molded spheres at an external pressure of 3,954psi or 2,690m ocean-depth (only a 7.38% error compared to the tested minimum failure depth), so I determined it a valid model. Evaluation Of Facilitation On Translocation Outcomes For San Joaquin Antelope Squirrel In The Carrizo Plain, California, Patrick R. Anderson
Evaluation Of Facilitation On Translocation Outcomes For San Joaquin Antelope Squirrel In The Carrizo Plain, California, Patrick R. Anderson
Master's Theses
In arid and semi-arid environments, burrowing mammals play a key role in increasing landscape heterogeneity through facilitative species interactions. The loss of burrowing mammal populations can consequently lead to negative effects cascading through the ecosystem. It is critical to understand these facilitative interactions for conservation and management. Understanding facilitative interactions may improve wildlife management tools, like translocation, which is often not very successful. To investigate the importance of burrow facilitation on San Joaquin antelope squirrel (Ammospermophilus nelsoni; SJAS) translocation success, I designed a natural experiment with a burrowing facilitator, the giant kangaroo rat (Dipodomys ingens; GKR). I …
Nanoparticles And The Environment: Biopolymer Grafted Cellulose And Screen-Printed Carbon Nanotube Composites, Dominique Henry Porcincula
Nanoparticles And The Environment: Biopolymer Grafted Cellulose And Screen-Printed Carbon Nanotube Composites, Dominique Henry Porcincula
Master's Theses
A host of environmental issues will define the state of the environment in the 21st century, with plastic pollution and water shortages among them. While solutions to these problems require large-scale, multipronged solutions, one way we can address them is through material innovation and the use of nanoparticles.
In the first project, we address the issue of plastic pollution by creating nanocomposites of biodegradable polymers (PLA and PCL) with cellulose nanofibrils. Here, PLA and PCL are grafted from the surface of cellulose nanofibrils via ring-opening polymerization of cyclic ester monomers. Polymer-grafted cellulose (PGC) is characterized with structural analysis, solubility …

Plant disease resistance genes are widely used in agriculture to reduce disease outbreaks and epidemics and ensure global food security. In soybean, Rps (Resistance to Phytophthora sojae) genes are used to manage Phytophthora sojae, a major oomycete pathogen that causes Phytophthora stem and root rot (PRR) worldwide. This study aims to identify temporal changes in P. sojae pathotype complexity, diversity, and Rps gene efficacy. Pathotype data was collected from 5121 isolates of P. sojae, derived from 29 surveys conducted between 1990 and 2019 across the United States, Argentina, Canada, and China. This systematic review shows a loss of efficacy of …

The transition from the middle to late Permian (Guadalupian–Lopingian) is claimed to record one or more extinction events that rival the ‘Big Five’ in terms of depletion of biological diversity and reorganization of ecosystem structure. Yet many questions remain as to whether the events recorded in separate regions were synchronous, causally related, or were of a magnitude rivaling other major crises in Earth's history. In this paper, we survey some major unresolved issues related to the Guadalupian–Lopingian transition and offer a multidisciplinary approach to advance understanding of this under-appreciated biotic crisis by utilizing records in Southern Hemisphere high-palaeolatitude settings. We …

Faculty Journal Articles
Macro-autophagy is a highly conserved catabolic process among eukaryotes affecting macrophages. This work studies the genetic regulatory network involving the interplay between autophagy and macrophage polarization (activation). Autophagy-related genes (Atgs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of macrophage polarization (M1-M2) were predicted, and their regulatory networks constructed. Naïve (M0) mouse bone marrow-derived monocytes were differentiated into M1 and M2a. Validation of the targets of Smad1, LC3A and LC3B, Atg16L1, Atg7, IL-6, CD68, Arg-1, and Vamp7 was performed in vitro. Immunophenotyping by flow cytometry revealed three macrophage phenotypes: M0 (IL-6 + /CD68 +), M1 (IL-6 + /CD68 + /Arg-1 +), and M2a …

The Pathway From Sensory Processing Sensitivity To Physical Health: Stress As A Mediator, Jordan Kenemore, Juliana Chavez, Grant Benham
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) has been proposed as an innate trait associated with differences in the processing and reactivity to internal and external stimuli. To date, there has been limited research on the association between SPS and physical health and only one study examining mediators of this relationship. The aim of this study was to examine psychological stress as a mediator of the SPS-health relationship in a predominately Hispanic sample of 923 adult undergraduates attending university between 2018 and 2020. We identified three SPS factors, each of which were associated with poorer physical health as assessed through two psychometrically validated …

Gaze And Avoidant Patterns Of Visual Attention To Aversive Stimuli During Fear Habituation Trial: A Pilot Eye Tracking Study, Minoru Takahashi, Manabu Kikuchi, Jun-Ichi Yamamoto, Michiyo Hirai
Psychological Science Faculty Publications
Previous studies have revealed that attentional bias toward aversive stimuli may play a causal role in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. This pilot study designed an experiment, using eye tracking, to capture gaze patterns individuals may display during a fear habituation trial. Three trials were conducted with twenty-eight subjects who reported aversion to insects. Pictures of cockroaches were used as aversive stimuli. The time proportion of the total visit duration and average visit duration toward aversive stimuli were analyzed using a mixed ANOVA, with three habituation trials and four self-report on fear level scores as within-participants factors. …
A Hybrid Cognitive Model For Machine Agents In Project And Action Teams, Joshua A. Lapso
A Hybrid Cognitive Model For Machine Agents In Project And Action Teams, Joshua A. Lapso
Theses and Dissertations
High performing human teams transcend complex domain uncertainty by achieving an emergent state of shared cognition, in which knowledge is organized, represented, and distributed to team members for rapid execution. However, this requires that individuals emit perceivable qualities upon which other members can make inferences about intent. In pursuit of future human and machine team studies, this research presents a hybrid cognitive model for machine agents in fully cooperative and semi-cooperative action and project teams. The hybrid cognitive model unifies the characteristics of the shared mental model and transactive memory system. The resultant model facilitates anytime selection over the two …

Shift Variant Image Deconvolution Using Deep Learning, Arnab Ghosh
Shift Variant Image Deconvolution Using Deep Learning, Arnab Ghosh
Theses
Image Deconvolution is a well-studied problem that seeks to restore the original sharp image from a blurry image formed in the imaging system. The Point Spread function(PSF) of a particular system can be used to infer the original sharp image given the blurred image. However, such a problem is usually simplified by making the shift-invariant assumption over the Field of View (FOV). Realistic systems are shift-variant; the optical system’s point spread function depends on the position of the object point from the principal axis. For example, asymmetrical lenses can cause space variant aberration. In this paper, we first simulate our …

Through this research, we are showcasing the application of computational approaches to the discoveries in the life sciences spectrum. Our current research not only focused on mobile genetic elements but also developed the computational methods that enabled these findings. We combined the biology sciences and computer science in our research, which is essentially multidisciplinary. To that end, this research intricately probed the role and implications of mobile genetic elements, emphasizing transposable elements. These dynamic components wielded substantial influence over genomic architecture's structure, function, and evolutionary adaptations. An integral component of our study is the innovative computational tool, Target/IGE Retriever (TIGER), …

Enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) detects antibodies against seven Taenia solium larvae antigens in three protein families (GP50, T24/42, and 8-kDa) with different structures and functions. EITB banding patterns against these antigens in pigs provide information about the course of infection and may discriminate viable cysticercosis. We analyzed the banding patterns and infection outcomes (presence of viable cysts, degenerated cysts, and any cysts) of 512 rural pigs. Banding patterns were grouped into homogenous classes using latent class analysis, and relationships with infection outcomes were assessed. Four classes were identified: 1 (n = 308, EITB-negative or positive for the GP50 family), 2 …

Spotting people with dementia early is challenging, but important to identify people for trials of treatment and prevention. We used brain scans of people with Alzheimer’s disease, the commonest type of dementia, and applied an artificial intelligence method to spot people with Alzheimer’s disease. We used this to find people in the Healthy UK Biobank study who might have early Alzheimer’s disease. The people we found had subtle changes in their memory and thinking to suggest they may have early disease, and we also found they had high blood pressure and smoked for longer. We have demonstrated an approach that …

Background: Perinatal outcomes vary for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The precise factors beyond glycemic status that may refine GDM diagnosis remain unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of potential precision markers for GDM. Methods: Systematic literature searches were performed in PubMed and EMBASE from inception to March 2022 for studies comparing perinatal outcomes among women with GDM. We searched for precision markers in the following categories: maternal anthropometrics, clinical/sociocultural factors, non-glycemic biochemical markers, genetics/genomics or other -omics, and fetal biometry. We conducted post-hoc meta-analyses of a subset of studies with data on the association of maternal …

Nanobubble Technology For The Removal Of Mib And Geosmin From Drinking Water, Meryem Soyluoglu
Nanobubble Technology For The Removal Of Mib And Geosmin From Drinking Water, Meryem Soyluoglu
All Dissertations
The presence of taste and odor (T&O) compounds in drinking water has been historically a major challenge for water utilities. They are difficult to remove using conventional water treatment processes, a combination of coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination. However, activated carbon (AC) adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, and biofiltration can be effective. The seasonal nature of T&O events makes it difficult to justify installing dedicated treatment technologies. Additionally, incorporating these technologies into existing water treatment plants can be expensive and require significant upgrades. Therefore, water utilities are always interested in exploring new approaches to minimize the occurrence and removal of …
A History Of Complex Simple Lie Algebras, Avrila Frazier
A History Of Complex Simple Lie Algebras, Avrila Frazier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1869, prompted by his work in differential equations, Sophus Lie wondered about categorizing what he called “closed systems of commutative transformations,” while around the same time, Wilhelm Killing’s work on non-Euclidean geometry encountered related topics. As mathematicians recognized this as a division of abstract algebra, the area became known as “continuous transformation groups," but we now refer to them as Lie groups.
Patterns and structures emerged from their work, such as describing Lie groups in connection with their associated Lie algebras, which can be categorized in many important ways. In this paper, we focus on Lie algebras over the …

Tidal marsh insect communities are influenced by both salinity and aspects of vegetation texture (vegetation diversity, plant density, and architectural structure). These factors affect the abundances and intra- and interguild interactions of these insects and should result in broad-scale variation in the distribution and ecological functioning of tidal marsh insect communities along these gradients. However, this assumption has not been tested within Gulf Coast marshes, and the insect communities and their ecological roles are not well known. This study identifies how family-level insect biodiversity varies by salinity and which factors are most important in affecting the distribution of insect functional …
