Analyzing Collagen Density Of Ecm & Chemo-Drug Binding Using Xrd In Pancreatic Cancer Slices With Ecm Remodeling Drug & Pa-Xrf, Jasmine Williams

Parkland Science Scholars

The goal of our project is to develop a new measure of chemotherapeutic drug binding in pancreatic cancer. We will use x-ray diffraction (XRD) and paired-agent x-ray fluorescence (PA-XRF). These tools will help to quantify chemotherapy binding and extracellular matrix. This process will help to assess cancer cells resistance and abnormal collagen growth (density) to then further be restricted. This restriction will allow the chemotherapeutic drug to penetrate the cancerous tumor and become more effective.

Optimizing A Hairy Root Transformation Pipeline In Pumpkin Utilizing An Ultraviolet Fluorescent Reporter, Kevin Rattin, Justin Larkin, Sarah R. Hind

Parkland Science Scholars

Introduction

  • Plant transformation is the process of integrating foreign DNA into the genome of a host organism, so that the DNA will be permanently expressed in the organism.
  • The plant pathogen Rhizobium rhizogenes inserts its own DNA into the host genome, leading to the formation of structures called hairy roots.
  • Plant transformation using R. rhizogenes is cheaper and less labor intensive than other transformation methods [1]. However, only the roots are transgenic, so these changes are not inherited by the next generation.
  • Previously, we modified existing hairy root transformation procedures [1,2] to work for our research system. However, we still …

Fish Kills' Hidden Link How Animal Feeding Operations Hurt Florida's Coastal Businesses, Julia Williams Jan 2023

Fish Kills' Hidden Link How Animal Feeding Operations Hurt Florida's Coastal Businesses, Julia Williams

St. Thomas Law Review

This paper proposes that agricultural water pollution should be further limited. As water pollution laws have thus far failed to adequately guard against nutrient pollution, despite abundantly available regenerative agricultural models, this three-part solution aims to empower citizens and the business industry to hold animal feeding operations accountable. To that end, this paper proposes: (1) expanding Florida’s Red Ride Task Force; (2) educating citizens via a media campaign; and (3) mandating feeding operations participate in Florida’s now voluntary Environmental Stewardship Certification Program. Part II of this paper describes the scientific process whereby discharge from animal feeding operations causes Florida’s fish …

Drought Influences Annual Survival Of Painted Turtles In Western Nebraska, Allyson N. Beard, Larkin Powell Jan 2023

Drought Influences Annual Survival Of Painted Turtles In Western Nebraska, Allyson N. Beard, Larkin Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Aquatic habitats in the Great Plains of North America have increased risk of droughts under climate forecasts. Droughts have the potential to influence the population dynamics of pond turtles, and long-term studies are useful to assess the impact of climatic variation on turtles. We compiled twelve years of mark-recapture data for painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) captured in a pond in Keith County, Nebraska during 2005–2016 that included two periods of drought. We used a robust design analysis to investigate influences on population size, annual survival, temporary immigration, and capture probability. Estimates of the annual population size ranged from 92 (CI: …

Necessary For Some, And Helpful For All: Preparing Music Educators To Reach Every Student, Rhoda Bernard

Faculty Works

The percentage of students in U.S. public schools who are classified as stu- dents with disabilities under the Individ- uals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has been steadily increasing in recent years, and continues to grow. Unfortu- nately, music educators are not adequate- ly prepared to teach disabled students. Pre-service music teacher education pro- grams do not provide course content in the pedagogy of accessible music educa- tion. Any coursework related to students with disabilities that is provided by these programs is limited to general studies of the historical and legal aspects of special education. As a result, music teachers …

Efficiency And Functions Of Keystone Landfill Bacteria In Biodegradation Of Mixed Phthalate Esters, Adisan Rungsihiranrut Jan 2023

Efficiency And Functions Of Keystone Landfill Bacteria In Biodegradation Of Mixed Phthalate Esters, Adisan Rungsihiranrut

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), commonly used phthalate esters (PAEs), are persistent pollutants found in landfills due to the increasing accumulation of plastic waste. To develop an effective bioremediation tool, in this study, we explored the responses of indigenous bacterial communities in landfill waste covers to PAE contamination and identified and isolated the keystone species that play roles in PAE degradation to form PAE-degrading consortium. Microcosm experiments at room temperature (27-30°C) and 37°C showed rapid removal of 300 mg/kg DBP, with 95% removal in 14 days individually and 90% in 21 days as a mixture. DEHP at 300 …

Assessing The Core Construct? A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Positive Symptomology In Mmpi-2 Clinical Scale 8 And Restructured Clinical Scale 8, Aubrie R. Musselman Jan 2023

Assessing The Core Construct? A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of Positive Symptomology In Mmpi-2 Clinical Scale 8 And Restructured Clinical Scale 8, Aubrie R. Musselman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transition from the MMPI-2 clinical scales to the restructured clinical (RC) scales sparked controversy and debate on several levels of analysis. At the psychometric level, the RC scales have been criticized for alleged construct drift, poor sensitivity, and potential redundancy due to their factor analytic construction. The first issue of construct validity, one of the most essential components of any psychometric tool, was the primary focus of this investigation. Specifically, claims have been made that because the RC scales demonstrate stronger correlations with the content scales than they do with their parent clinical scales, they do not adequately assess …

A Loosely Coupled Surface And Groundwater Model To Assess Drought In The Chipuxet Watershed, Rhode Island, Christian Pieter Tulungen Jan 2023

A Loosely Coupled Surface And Groundwater Model To Assess Drought In The Chipuxet Watershed, Rhode Island, Christian Pieter Tulungen

Open Access Master's Theses

Southern Rhode Island experiences annual seasonal population spikes during the summer months. During that period, the 2012 Rhode Island Water Resource Board Strategic Plan reported inadequate water supply to meet the average and peak seasonal demand in the Southern Region (RIWRB, 2012). The region is characterized by predominantly mixed land use with areas of residential use interspersed within agricultural fields and mixed forests. The region is also an important summer tourist destination which increases water demand for many aquifers. In general, New England’s watersheds are expected to see an increase in frequency and magnitude of extreme flow events i.e., droughts …

Forelimb Motion And Orientation In The Ornithischian Dinosaurs Styracosaurus And Thescelosaurus, And Its Implications For Locomotion And Other Behavior, Philip J. Senter, Jared J. Mackey Jan 2023

Forelimb Motion And Orientation In The Ornithischian Dinosaurs Styracosaurus And Thescelosaurus, And Its Implications For Locomotion And Other Behavior, Philip J. Senter, Jared J. Mackey

College of Health, Science, and Technology

The range of motion (ROM) in the forelimb has previously been studied in many saurischian dinosaur species but only a few ornithischian dinosaur species. Here, we fill in some of the blanks in current knowledge of ornithischian forelimb function by investigating the range of shoulder motion and the orientation of the humerus, radius, and ulna in the centrosaurine ceratopsid Styracosaurus albertensis and the basal orni-thopod Thescelosaurus sp. Manual manipulation of forelimb bones, using the margins of bony articular surfaces to delimit the range of motion, shows that humeral ROM and forearm orientation in S. albertensis resemble those previously found in …

Restudy Of Shoulder Motion In The Theropod Dinosaur Mononykus Olecranus (Alvarezsauridae), Philip J. Senter

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Background: Range of motion in the forelimb of the Upper Cretaceous theropod dinosaur Mononykus olecranus, a member of the family Alvarezsauridae, has previously been investigated. However, the method used to investigate range of motion at the shoulder in M. olecranus did not follow the standardized procedure used in subsequent studies. The latter procedure yields more reliable results, and its standardization provides that its results are directly comparable to the results of similar studies in other species. I therefore reinvestigated the range of motion at the shoulder in M. olecranus, using the latter procedure. Methods: Casts of the left scapula and …

Analysis Of A Cathepsin Protease In Normal Development And Tumor Metastasis In Drosophila Melanogaster, Lindsey Fannin

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Cysteine cathepsins are an important class of fifteen proteases with involvement in normal development and tumor progression. To better understand their contribution to these processes, the cathepsin L protease in Drosophila melanogaster was studied. In part one of this project, the role of this cathepsin in the normal development of Drosophila wings was analyzed. The GAL4/UAS-system and RNAi were used to downregulate this cathepsin in various regions of the wing and progeny were inspected for phenotypic irregularities. An abnormal phenotype of curved wings was found and hypothesized to be a result of apoptosis. Further experimentation will be required to prove …

Children's Digital Privacy And The Case Against Parental Consent, Zahra Takhshid Jan 2023

Children's Digital Privacy And The Case Against Parental Consent, Zahra Takhshid

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Children’s engagement with the internet has exploded. From education to social media, companies have offered products and services that --far from being mere distractions for children -- have increasingly become necessities. This necessity is most keenly felt in the EdTech world. As companies rely on the verifiable parental consent required by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”) to collect and use minors’ data, reviewing boilerplate waivers of liability and consent forms for children’s online activities have thus become part of parenting. This article argues that under the common law tradition of protecting the best interest of the child, when …

Investigating Changes In Permeability Caused By The Transport And Retention Of Microplastics In Saturated Sand Columns, Iliansherry Santiago Jan 2023

Investigating Changes In Permeability Caused By The Transport And Retention Of Microplastics In Saturated Sand Columns, Iliansherry Santiago

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Microplastics (MPs), plastic particles present and continuously moving in our environment, represent a contaminant of global concern to the scientific community and society. MPs are particles less than 5 mm and are ubiquitous in our surroundings and the environment. MPs have been detected in oceans, soils, freshwater, drinking water and groundwater. MPs are considered contaminants of emerging concern (CEC), as they contain toxic components and serve as carriers for other contaminants that may affect the ecology and human health. Limited laboratory and field experiments demonstrate that MPs are transported and retained in porous media of a groundwater aquifer. A research …

Measuring And Preliminary Modeling Of Drift Interception By Plant Species, Jonnie B. Dunne, Shanique L. Grant, Jeffrey A. Golus, Jeffrey W. Perine, Stefan Wolf, Michael Winchell, T. Mark Ledson, Ian Whenham

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Currently, the concept of plant capture efficiency is not quantitatively considered in the evaluation of off-target drift for the purposes of pesticide risk assessment in the United States. For on-target pesticide applications, canopy capture efficiency is managed by optimizing formulations or tank-mixing with adjuvants to maximize retention of spray droplets. These efforts take into consideration the fact that plant species have diverse morphology and surface characteristics, and as such will retain varying levels of applied pesticides. This work aims to combine plant surface wettability potential, spray droplet characteristics, and plant morphology into describing the plant capture efficiency of drifted spray …

An Efficient And Low-Cost Method To Create High-Density Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers In Cvd Diamond For Sensing Applications., Prem Bahadur Karki, Rupak Timalsina, Mohammadjavad Dowran, Ayodimeji E. Aregbesola, Abdelghani Laraoui, Kapildeb Ambal

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

The negatively charged Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV-) center in diamond is one of the most versatile and robust quantum sensors suitable for quantum technologies, including magnetic field and temperature sensors. For precision sensing applications, densely packed NV- centers within a small volume are preferable due to benefiting from 1/√𝑁 sensitivity enhancement (N is the number of sensing NV centers) and efficient excitation of NV centers. However, methods for quickly and efficiently forming high concentrations of NV- centers are in development stage. We report an efficient, low-cost method for creating high-density NV- centers production from a relatively …

The Male Gaze And Women’S Sports Identity: Male Authorship Of The Female Experience, Jennifer Lavoie Jan 2023

The Male Gaze And Women’S Sports Identity: Male Authorship Of The Female Experience, Jennifer Lavoie

The Graduate Review

The male gaze “construes women subjectively, according to stereotyped cognitions which harmonise with the expectations of the male reader [viewer]” (Brandt 2005, 235). This article examines how the male gaze shapes women’s participation in sport and physical activity. A brief historical retrospective provides examples of how the male voice authored ways in which women were allowed to compete and then offers contemporary examples that show how the male gaze continues to influence women’s sport clothing and behavior, rules, policies, and coaching methods. Despite the improvements in women’s sport participation, men still have the lion’s share of leadership positions with sports …

Activity 2: A Little Bit Salty, Karen Ye Jan 2023

Activity 2: A Little Bit Salty, Karen Ye

Theme 4: Please Pass the Salt

Density is defined as the amount of mass that takes up a certain amount of volume. Adding salt or sugar to water increases its density since there are more particles (mass) packed into a similar amount of space (volume). Cooling water can also increase its density since the particles move more slowly at lower temperatures and will be more packed together. When two substances with different densities are combined, the one with a lower density will float whereas the one with a higher density will sink. The greater the difference in density, the more distinct the layers and the harder …

Activity 1: A Day In The Life, Patrick Young

Theme 5: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

All highways run through animal habitats. Fencing highways can provide drivers some protection from animal-related accidents, but they fragment the habitat, causing problems for wildlife. In this activity, students learn some of the reasons that animals will attempt to cross highways.

Activity 2: Just Passing Through, Elizabeth Martinez Jan 2023

Activity 2: Just Passing Through, Elizabeth Martinez

Theme 5: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

Animal passages for wildlife are becoming more prevalent. Their purpose is to provide a safe path for animals to cross man-made barriers, in this case roadways. Fish ladders, patented in 1837, are an early example of this type of intervention. In addition, passages provide animal access to resources on the other side of the barrier. Crossings help to connect habitats to avoid habitat fragmentation, which can restrict the gene pool resulting in lower and more at-risk populations, as well as potential extinction. Vehicle and wildlife collisions account for many injuries and deaths for humans and other animals, property damage, and …
