What Taking Development Seriously Means For Evolutionary Theory, David C. Witherington, Robert Lickliter, David S. Moore
What Taking Development Seriously Means For Evolutionary Theory, David C. Witherington, Robert Lickliter, David S. Moore
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
Proponents of the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis (EES) emphasize the critical role that organisms and their development play in the process of evolution. This framework explicitly rejects the genocentric focus that once dominated interpretations of the Modern Synthesis in evolutionary theory. In place of genocentrism, EES highlights processes like niche construction, developmental constraint, and extragenetic inheritance as central to any understanding of evolutionary process. However, much more is at stake in adopting the EES than simply moving beyond the gene-dominant viewpoint of the Modern Synthesis. The EES, in fact, represents a fundamental challenge to the core of classic Darwinism itself by …
Long Increasing Subsequences, Hannah Friedman
Long Increasing Subsequences, Hannah Friedman
HMC Senior Theses
In my thesis, I investigate long increasing subsequences of permutations from two angles. Motivated by studying interpretations of the longest increasing subsequence statistic across different representations of permutations, we investigate the relationship between reduced words for permutations and their RSK tableaux in Chapter 3. In Chapter 4, we use permutations with long increasing subsequences to construct a basis for the space of -local functions.

Bone elements can reveal varying characteristics for each rodent, so it is best to analyze overlapping elements between and among taxa when drawing comparative conclusions.
Fossorial animals present robust skeletons, strong scapular girdles, short fore- and hind limbs, and prominent attachment sites for muscles. In an animal that is primarily cursorial it is expected to see a slimmer forelimb because the need for strong limbs to deal with biochemical strains is not present.
Using a sample of Marmota monax (groundhog) and Tamias striatus (chipmunk), two common taxa found in northeastern Pennsylvania, we can examine the locomotory modes of these closely …
Duckweed In Wastewater Management: Species Comparison Of Spirodela Polyrhiza And Lemna Minuta, Lindsey Chepalonis
Duckweed In Wastewater Management: Species Comparison Of Spirodela Polyrhiza And Lemna Minuta, Lindsey Chepalonis
Student Research Poster Presentations 2023
Wastewater is any liquid or water-carried waste accrued from sanitary operations. This waste contains toxins that must be purified, as they pose an environmental and public health hazard. Specifically, this risk is high in developing countries. Aquatic plants can be used to purify wastewater. Duckweed is a free-floating aquatic plant with over 37 species, but Lemna minor is typically used for wastewater management. This research focuses on finding different species to use in wastewater management. Spirodela polyrhiza and Lemna minuta chlorophyll concentration and frond increase were compared with Lemna minor. The species were maintained in varying concentrations of Hoagland’s solution …

Approximately 1.5 billion people suffer from chronic pain, with 68 million people suffering in the U.S alone. Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists longer than 12 weeks despite medication or treatment. Within the U.S, about 5.5 million cancer patients experience chronic pain. Around 20% of these cancer pains have neuropathic origins and develop from radiation therapy. Halneuron, a new drug currently in development, seeks to provide pain relief to those suffering from chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain. This drug includes Tetrodotoxin (TTX), a potent neurotoxin found in most species of pufferfish, as its main active ingredient. Our 3D printed model …

Caring In Wonder: A Defense Of The Epistemic And Motivational Value Of Wonder, Tim Lin
Caring In Wonder: A Defense Of The Epistemic And Motivational Value Of Wonder, Tim Lin
Bouwsma Paper Contest
That wonder is somehow highly significant and essential to the human experience is an intuition many seem to share, from Socrates who claimed that the love of wisdom itself “begins in wonder” to the high aesthetic and moral value given to it by Romantics, artists, and poets across traditions. A substantial philosophical conversation has also interpreted wonder not in its colloquial sense as a curious searching for answers prompted by a gap in our understanding and thus antithetical to knowledge, but as itself a ‘way of seeing’ essentially disrupting our ‘ordinary’ experience and meanings and taking us in more direct …

The Impacts Of Role Overload And Role Conflict On Physicians' Technology Adoption, Eun Hee Park, Ghiyoung P. Im, Jing Zhang, Young Hwan Lee, Kyung Hee Chun, Young Soon Park
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
Technology adoption is an important solution for physicians to increase work efficiency, and thus deal with role conflict among their multiple job roles. Prior studies have not investigated how multiple job roles and role conflict influence physicians’ technology adoption intentions. Based on role strain theory and role identity theory, we present a model of physicians’ technology adoption intentions to support their primary (clinical care) versus secondary (teaching or research) job roles. We test the model using surveys with 156 physicians at nine medical schools in Korea. The results of our data analysis largely support our hypotheses. Role overload in each …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
More information is needed about the impact of outpatient nutrition care from a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) on patient outcomes. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a cohort study design to evaluate impact of RDN nutrition care on patient outcomes, describe clinic malnutrition screening practices, and estimate statistical parameters for a larger study. Seventy-seven patients with lung, esophageal, colon, rectal, or pancreatic cancer from six facilities were included (41 received RDN care and 36 did not). RDN nutrition care was prospectively documented for six months and documented emergency room visits, unplanned hospitalizations and treatment changes were retrospectively abstracted …

Pilot Study Shows Skin-To-Skin Care With Parents Improves Heart Rate Variability In Preterm Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Erin Swieter, Jessica M. Gross, Julia Stephen, Kristi Watterberg, Jessie R. Maxwell
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Skin-to-skin care in the newborn intensive care unit typically lasts for short periods of time and enhances breastfeeding, attachment, and parental self-esteem. Heart rate variability (HRV) increases with gestational age and is a measure of maturation of parasympathetic vs. sympathetic autonomic nervous system activity. HRV measurements may be useful in capturing changes in autonomic regulation in response to skin-to-skin care.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of skin-to-skin care on HRV in preterm infants receiving respiratory support. We hypothesized that skin-to-skin care would result in a more mature pattern of parasympathetic activity.
METHODS: In this prospective crossover study, infants <30 >weeks' …30>

IMPORTANCE: SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in ongoing, relapsing, or new symptoms or other health effects after the acute phase of infection; termed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), or long COVID. The characteristics, prevalence, trajectory and mechanisms of PASC are ill-defined. The objectives of the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Multi-site Observational Study of PASC in Adults (RECOVER-Adult) are to: (1) characterize PASC prevalence; (2) characterize the symptoms, organ dysfunction, natural history, and distinct phenotypes of PASC; (3) identify demographic, social and clinical risk factors for PASC onset and recovery; and (4) define the biological mechanisms underlying PASC pathogenesis. …

INTRODUCTION: The teratogenic effects of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) have been examined in animal models and humans. The current study extends the prior literature by quantifying differences in brain structure for individuals with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) compared to typically developing controls, as well as examining FASD subtypes. We hypothesized the FASD group would reveal smaller brain volume, reduced cortical thickness, and reduced surface area compared to controls, with the partial fetal alcohol syndrome (pFAS)/fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) subtypes showing the largest effects and the PAE/alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND) subtype revealing intermediate effects.
METHODS: The sample consisted of …

The Critical Architect: How Can Educational Leaders Use Duoethnographic Boundary-Spanning Dialogue To Build Pathways For Transformative Leadership?, Wendy Lawrence
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The U.S. schooling system has a long history of failed reforms that lead to schools consistently perpetuating society’s inequities. Rigid organizational structure, built purposely to sustain the life of the institution (as if it, and not the children, were the thing whose life mattered), ensures that even the most well-intentioned transformative school leader or community activist will struggle to create lasting change. Barriers created by organizations, laws, and culture are everywhere, acting as obstacles to discourse and progress. Any attempt to rethink schools must include the voices and ideas of marginalized students and families who are often excluded from curriculum, …

PURPOSE: Varicocele is a common problem among infertile men. Varicocele repair (VR) is frequently performed to improve semen parameters and the chances of pregnancy. However, there is a lack of consensus about the diagnosis, indications for VR and its outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore global practice patterns on the management of varicocele in the context of male infertility.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty practicing urologists/andrologists from 23 countries contributed 382 multiple-choice-questions pertaining to varicocele management. These were condensed into an online questionnaire that was forwarded to clinicians involved in male infertility management through direct invitation. The results …

Differences In The Spectral Output Of Single- And Double-Ended High-Pressure-Sodium Lamps, Jun Liu, Bruce Bugbee
Photobiology
High pressure sodium lamps have a low fraction of blue photons, and this fraction is reduced from 3.6% to 2.6% in the newer style double-ended bulbs. About half of the photons in the “blue” region (400 to 499 nm) are between 491 and 499 nm. These photons have low biological activity for cryptochrome activation.

California Environmental Flows Framework: The Ways Good Science Gets Watered Down, Paul Stanton Kibel
UC Law Environmental Journal
In the field of natural resources policy, there is a longstanding tendency for good science to get compromised and diluted when it comes to final agency actions and policies. In the water policy arena, this tendency has been particularly prevalent when it comes to agency-mandated instream flow standards, which often depart from agency determinations of what instream flow is needed to maintain healthy fisheries and ecosystems. In late 2021, the California Water Quality Monitoring Council approved the California Environmental Flows Framework (“CEFF”). The CEFF makes a distinction between “ecological flow criteria” and “environmental flow recommendations” and anticipates that CEFF “environmental …

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by a developmental disorder with multiple variations of severity which are characterized by the difficulties in communication, social interactions, and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior. In the United States 1 in every 36 (2.3%) children over eight years has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Male students are diagnosed more frequently than their female counterparts. Evidence suggests that 1 in 27 males were identified with autism whereas 1 in 116 females were identified with autism. Males are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than females. Recent diagnostic criteria indicated that genetics …

Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto
Early Identification Of Barriers To Medication Adherence In The Elderly Population Through The Use Of A Modified Screening Tool, Miranda Joyner, Blake Meranto
Doctoral Projects
Medication nonadherence (MNA) is a major contributor to hospitalizations and accounts for billions of dollars spent every year on health care. Despite medications being prescribed in nearly 75% of healthcare interactions, it is estimated that 33 to 50% of Americans do not take their medications as prescribed, if at all (Bartlett Ellis et al., 2020; Kleinsinger, 2018). The COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation, Behavior) Model used in this DNP project suggests that an individual must have the capability, opportunity, and motivation to enact a certain behavior, and should any of these areas be lacking, the behavior is unlikely to occur. This …
