Nutritional And Wellness Strategies For Neurological And Psychiatric Recovery From Postcovid Syndrome And Post-Acute Sequelae Of Covid-19, Jeffrey Schaefer, Deepesh Khanna
HPD Articles
The post-COVID syndrome was officially recognized as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act, indicating that this syndrome has made a significant impact on our populace. Also, post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) is a term that describes the long-term health problems that some people experience after being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. These problems can last for weeks, months, or even years, and can affect various parts of the body, such as the heart, lungs, brain, and blood vessels. This narrative review paper utilized the PubMed database to explore the pathophysiology of post-COVID syndrome's neurological and psychiatric …

Masculine Ideals And Health In Older Men: Findings From The Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, Shane D. Burns, Patricia Drentea
APC Fund
How do older men’s masculine ideals affect their health? Are masculine activities involved in this relationship? Masculine identity upholds beliefs about masculine enactment. These beliefs can be detrimental to men and can lead to behaviors that can put undue stress on them. We examine how masculine ideals are associated with health and depressive symptomatology in older men. We used 2011 data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (n = 2,594) to investigate how masculine ideals inform older men’s health and how participation in masculine activities might shape these outcomes. Findings from this study illustrate that traditional masculine ideals are associated …
Zirconia Implants: A Mapping Review, Steven J. Sadowsky
Zirconia Implants: A Mapping Review, Steven J. Sadowsky
Pacific Faculty Work
The advent of zirconia ceramics with excellent mechanical, biomechanical, and optical properties has made them attractive metal-free substitutes for titanium implants. Both animal and human studies have documented shortcomings with titanium implants. A mapping review of the current literature on three iterations of zirconia implant designs has been challenging due to heterogeneous success data and limited follow-up. Zirconia implants hold promise for a new generation of dental implants, but technical developments are needed for design and material enhancements that will need to be validated by long-term rigorous studies.

Enhanced Bmp Signaling In Cathepsin K-Positive Tendon Progenitors Induces Heterotopic Ossification, Hiroyuki Yamaguchi, Margaret Li, Megumi Kitami, Sowmya Swaminathan, Yuji Mishina, Yoshihiro Komatsu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is abnormal bone growth in soft tissues that results from injury, trauma, and rare genetic disorders. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are critical osteogenic regulators which are involved in HO. However, it remains unclear how BMP signaling interacts with other extracellular stimuli to form HO. To address this question, using the Cre-loxP recombination system in mice, we conditionally expressed the constitutively activated BMP type I receptor ALK2 with a Q207D mutation (Ca-ALK2) in Cathepsin K-Cre labeled tendon progenitors (hereafter “Ca-Alk2:Ctsk-Cre”). Ca-Alk2:Ctsk-Cre mice were viable but they formed spontaneous HO in the Achilles tendon. Histological and molecular …

Enigmatic Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Post Radiotherapy - A Case Report, Amanda Phoon Nguyen
Enigmatic Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Post Radiotherapy - A Case Report, Amanda Phoon Nguyen
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Although thought to be uncommon, it is believed that cervicofacial actinomycosis is underreported due to frequent misdiagnosis. It has been called the “most misdiagnosed disease by experienced clinicians”. A wide range of dental procedures or trauma, including tooth eruption, may precipitate actinomycosis by enabling microorganisms to penetrate the deeper tissue layers via an entry point. This infective disease is significant due to its potentially aggressive and locally destructive nature. This case describes a patient diagnosed with cervicofacial actinomycosis. Her history prior to this was significant for proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, and T4aN0M0 (AJCC 7th Edition) squamous cell carcinoma of the right …

Background
Medial temporal lobe (MTL) networks, including posterior-medial (PM) and anterior-temporal (AT) subnetworks, are early affected by Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathologies (tau, neurodegeneration) and are critical for memory, which declines in AD. The biological pathways linking AD pathology, changes in MTL-AT-PM structural connectivity (SC), and cognitive decline, are unknown. Plasma protein levels reflect those in the cerebrospinal fluid, providing a low-invasive potential means of understanding molecular brain changes that occur in AD. These measures may help explain how AD pathology, MTL-AT-PM SC, and cognitive decline are linked at the molecular level. We used predefined aging-related plasma proteins from a meta-analysis …

The Effects Of Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Grafting Density On The Extensional Solution Flows Of High Molecular Weight Polyacrylamide, Adam Linscott, Lauren Hong, Svetlana Morozova
Faculty Scholarship
Controlling the extensional rheological properties of solutions is of great interest for a number of applications, such as printing and coatings, as polymeric additives can modify a fluid's droplet size, formation, and breakup. We have measured the extensional flows of polyacrylamide graft poly(ethylene glycol) amine (PAM-g-PEGa) solutions as a function of grafting density. PAM-g-PEGa is synthesized with grafting densities of 2.5%, 5.5%, 8%, and 30% and extensional flow was analyzed with drop-on-substrate rheology. Flow time scales and profiles are then compared to understand the effects of backbone extension from the addition of side chains. At low grafting densities, the viscous …

Growing food autonomously on Mars is challenging due to the Martian soil's low nutrient content and high salinity. Understanding how plants adapt and evaluating their nutritional attributes are pivotal for sustained Mars missions. This research delves into the regeneration, stress tolerance, and dietary metrics of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) across different Mars Global Simulant (MGS-1) concentrations (0, 25, 50, and 75%). In our greenhouse experiment, 75% MGS-1 concentration significantly inhibited sweet potato growth, storage root biomass, and chlorophyll content. This concentration also elevated the plant tissues' H2O2, proline, and ascorbic acid levels. Higher MGS-1 exposures (50 and 75%) …

Academic Clustering: A Longitudinal Analysis Of A Division I Football Program, Jeffrey J. Fountain, Peter S. Finley
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
As NCAA Division I coaches feel greater pressure to produce winning teams while ensuring that athletes remain eligible and progress toward degrees to avoid sanctions under the NCAA’s academic reform initiatives, concerns regarding the clustering of athletes into limited numbers of academic majors has increased. Academic clustering occurs when 25% or more of the members of one team share a single academic major (Case, Greer, & Brown, 1987). Recent studies have extended the analysis of clustering to include the disparate impact on white and minority football players in a single athletic conference (Fountain & Finley, 2009), as well as consideration …

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice - Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez
JCLC Online
A few years ago, we developed the concept of “role-reversibility” in AI governance: the idea that it matters whether a party exercising judgment is reciprocally vulnerable to the effects of judgment. This idea, we argued, supplies a deontic reason to maintain certain spheres of human judgment even if (or when) truly intelligent machines become demonstrably superior in every utilitarian sense. While computer science remains far from that holy grail, generative AI is raging through systems as diverse as healthcare, finance, advertising, law, and academe, making it imperative to further shore up our claim. We do so by situating role-reversibility within …

Science Communication Through Cool Critters: An Informal Learning Experience For Youth, Jamila Bajelan
Communication Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
There are numerous methods to communicate science, and one such method aims at increasing participants’ personal responses (awareness, enjoyment, interest, opinion, and understanding) of science. Informal science learning experiences, such as summer camps, are excellent settings to communicate science to young people. In addition, summer camps offer several opportunities to decrease the negative effects of the summer slide, a phenomenon that refers to the loss of students’ math and reading skills over the summer. For this study, I sought to build on this foundation and develop an informal learning experience for young people to communicate the science of native animals …

Disease states are the result of a complex interplay of many different cell types interacting in close proximity in the context of often heterogeneous tissues. Alpha particles are drawing intense research and clinical interest because of their potent cytotoxic effects and their short path lengths. Analyzing the dose distribution and tissue micro-environment for alpha therapy plays a key role in predicting the efficacy of this targeted radiotherapy. However, to date there have been no direct on-tissue analytical methods for alpha dose distributions and the corresponding tissue microenvironments. Therefore, we have developed a pipeline to overcome this limitation by utilizing quantitative …

Maternal obesity increases the risk of childhood obesity and programs the offspring to develop metabolic syndrome later in their life. Palmitate is the predominant saturated free fatty acid (FFA) that is transported across the placenta to the fetus. We have recently shown that saturated FFA in the maternal circulation as a result of increased adipose tissue lipolysis in third trimester of pregnancy induces trophoblast lipoapoptosis. Here, we hypothesized that palmitate induces integrated stress response by activating mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and granular stress and lipoapoptosis in trophoblasts. Choriocarcinoma-derived third-trimester placental trophoblast-like cells (JEG-3 and JAR) referred …

The Effect Of Hedgerow Age On Vegetative Species Diversity, Matthew Blogg
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Hedgerows are a distinctive part of the English countryside and provide many ecological benefits and services. Over recent history, hedgerows have been removed and replanted, resulting in a matrix of different aged hedgerows across the country. In this study, the effect of hedgerow age on vegetative species diversity was tested to see if older hedgerows contained a higher species diversity than younger hedgerows. Four hedgerows of varying ages were tested on an urban farm in Plymouth, Southwest England. Percentage cover of each species was measured across ten samples in each hedgerow, with a Shannon’s diversity score being calculated for each …
