Enigmatic Cervicofacial Actinomycosis Post Radiotherapy - A Case Report, Amanda Phoon Nguyen
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Although thought to be uncommon, it is believed that cervicofacial actinomycosis is underreported due to frequent misdiagnosis. It has been called the “most misdiagnosed disease by experienced clinicians”. A wide range of dental procedures or trauma, including tooth eruption, may precipitate actinomycosis by enabling microorganisms to penetrate the deeper tissue layers via an entry point. This infective disease is significant due to its potentially aggressive and locally destructive nature. This case describes a patient diagnosed with cervicofacial actinomycosis. Her history prior to this was significant for proliferative verrucous leukoplakia, and T4aN0M0 (AJCC 7th Edition) squamous cell carcinoma of the right …

The paraneoplastic syndrome referred in the literature as non-islet-cell tumor hypoglycemia (NICTH) and extra-pancreatic tumor hypoglycemia (EPTH) was first reported almost a century ago, and the role of cancer-secreted IGF-II in causing this blood glucose-lowering condition has been widely established. The landscape emerging in the last few decades, based on molecular and cellular findings, supports a broader role for IGF-II in cancer biology beyond its involvement in the paraneoplastic syndrome. In particular, a few key findings are constantly observed during tumorigenesis, (a) a relative and absolute increase in fetal insulin receptor isoform (IRA) content, with (b) an increase …

Background; Food insecurity is a risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, including obesity. Importantly, both food insecurity and obesity are more prevalent in African American women than in other groups. Furthermore, food insecurity is considered a cyclic phenomenon, with episodes of food adequacy (ie, enough food to eat) and food shortage (ie, not enough food to eat). More research is needed to better understand why food insecurity is linked to obesity, including acknowledging the episodic nature of food insecurity as a stressor and identifying underlying mechanisms. Objective; The objective of this study is to investigate the episodic nature of food …

The Role Of Oral Microbiota In The Causation Of Colorectal Cancer Thomas Ko, Thomas Ko
Honors Scholar Theses
The oral cavity and the gut are the two largest and most diverse microbiomes in the human body. While it may be obvious that bacteria found in the mouth can lead to oral diseases, it is also proven that the oral microbiome is directly linked to the gut microbiome. Oral bacteria has the capability to translocate itself to the gut and affect the immune defense. A dysbiotic gut microbiome has many negative implications on the body, including pancreatic, lung, and colorectal cancer. This literature review will specifically focus on colorectal cancer, which is the third most common cancer in the …
