Understanding The Use Of Artificial Intelligence In Cybercrime, Katalin Parti, Thomas Dearden, Sinyong Choi
Understanding The Use Of Artificial Intelligence In Cybercrime, Katalin Parti, Thomas Dearden, Sinyong Choi
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
Artificial intelligence is one of the newest innovations which offenders exploit to satisfy their criminal desires. Although understanding cybercrime that is associated with this relatively new technology is essential in developing proper preventive measures, little has been done to examine this area. Therefore, this paper provides an overview of the two articles featured in the special issue of the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence and Cybercrime, one about deepfakes in the metaverse and the other about social engineering attacks. The articles were written by the winners of the student paper competition at the 2023 International White Hat Conference.
Victimization By Deepfake In The Metaverse: Building A Practical Management Framework, Julia Stavola, Kyung-Shick Choi
Victimization By Deepfake In The Metaverse: Building A Practical Management Framework, Julia Stavola, Kyung-Shick Choi
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
Deepfake is digitally altered media aimed to deceive online users for political favor, monetary gain, extortion, and more. Deepfakes are the prevalent issues of impersonation, privacy, and fake news that cause substantial damage to individuals, groups, and organizations. The metaverse is an emerging 3-dimensional virtual platform led by AI and blockchain technology where users freely interact with each other. The purpose of this study is to identify the use of illicit deep fakes which can potentially contribute to cybercrime victimization in the metaverse. The data will be derived from expert interviews (n=8) and online open sources to design a framework …
Harnessing Large Language Models To Simulate Realistic Human Responses To Social Engineering Attacks: A Case Study, Mohammad Asfour, Juan Carlos Murillo
Harnessing Large Language Models To Simulate Realistic Human Responses To Social Engineering Attacks: A Case Study, Mohammad Asfour, Juan Carlos Murillo
International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime
The research publication, “Generative Agents: Interactive Simulacra of Human Behavior,” by Stanford and Google in 2023 established that large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 can generate interactive agents with credible and emergent human-like behaviors. However, their application in simulating human responses in cybersecurity scenarios, particularly in social engineering attacks, remains unexplored. In addressing that gap, this study explores the potential of LLMs, specifically the Open AI GPT-4 model, to simulate a broad spectrum of human responses to social engineering attacks that exploit human social behaviors, framing our primary research question: How does the simulated behavior of human targets, based …
A Just Futures Framework: Insurgent Roller-Skating In Portland, Oregon, Célia Camile Beauchamp
A Just Futures Framework: Insurgent Roller-Skating In Portland, Oregon, Célia Camile Beauchamp
Dissertations and Theses
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, insurgent roller-skating has 're-emerged' as a popular use of urban space. Drawing on spatial justice theories, futures literature, and queer spatial theory, this study theorizes a four-part just futures framework to analyze the nuance and tension within the roller-skating scene in Portland, Oregon. The just futures framework: 1) creates a space for expanding planning practice to reflect overlooked and suppressed perspectives on urban space; 2) explores insurgent urbanism’s contradiction between the reification of hegemonic systems and its counter-hegemonic and subversive qualities; and 3) assesses the spatial and planning implications of insurgent …
Punitive Instead Of Rehabilitative: The Role Of Restitution In The Juvenile Justice System And The Need For Reconstruction, Sydney Ford
Georgia Criminal Law Review
The juvenile justice system was founded on the premise of giving specific attention to the needs of youth and rehabilitating them. Over the years, the juvenile justice system evolved to include more rights and protections for youth while still maintaining that their goal was to rehabilitate justice-involved youth. Restitution, one method of disposition, began as a way to continue this rehabilitation-based mission and provide an alternative to incarceration. However, rehabilitation’s disproportionate and punitive application, with a lack of consistency across state lines, does not coincide with rehabilitation anymore. This article argues that restitution does not align with rehabilitation, the core …
Legalize For Legal Highs: How Georgia Can Address Racial Disparities In The Criminal Legal System By Legalizing Recreational Cannabis, Nneka Ewulonu
Legalize For Legal Highs: How Georgia Can Address Racial Disparities In The Criminal Legal System By Legalizing Recreational Cannabis, Nneka Ewulonu
Georgia Criminal Law Review
Cannabis prohibition is a policy failure that nevertheless continues to impact more than half of Americans, including Georgians. Remaining true to its roots in racism and xenophobia, cannabis criminalization has disparate impacts, with Black Americans being more likely to be arrested or incarcerated for a cannabis related offense. Furthermore, cannabis criminalization results in tens of millions of missed tax dollars for the state. This article argues for a clear policy solution; it is time for Georgia to legalize cannabis. As demonstrated by the 21 states that have legalized recreational cannabis as of Fall 2022, legalizing recreational cannabis creates both economic …

Square-Peg Frauds, Miriam H. Baer
Square-Peg Frauds, Miriam H. Baer
Northwestern University Law Review
The square-peg fraud is a kind of case that until very recently enjoyed the widespread support of prosecutors, jurists, and the general public. Rather than punishing a scheme that rids a victim of her money or property, the square-peg prosecution has long focused on deprivations of intangible property. For years, enforcement actors have employed this concept to pursue innumerable varieties of corruption.
Nowhere has the square peg been more essential than in the government’s prosecution of higher education scandals. From the Varsity Blues parents who wrongfully secured elite college slots for their children, to the business school dean who shaped …

Ever The Matchmaker: Connecting Mpa Grant Courses With Grant Professional Competencies, William Luke Parker
Ever The Matchmaker: Connecting Mpa Grant Courses With Grant Professional Competencies, William Luke Parker
Student Theses and Dissertations
Grants permeate the public service sector but are seldom addressed in the literature on public administration education. This thesis paper fills this gap by examining the correspondence between grant-related course descriptions and the core competencies and skills measured by the Grant Professional Certification Institute. A review of the professional literature highlights the importance of intrapersonal and interorganizational knowledge to grant professional competencies and skills. Content analysis of a sample of course descriptions (n = 73) is performed to elucidate links between courses and the core competencies and skills of the Grant Professional Certification Institute. The results suggest that the descriptions …
Urban And Rural Comparisons Of Attitudes Toward Medically Assisted Treatment For Pregnant And Postpartum Women With Oud In Appalachia, Anna Reeves
Online Theses and Dissertations
The opioid crisis has plagued the United States but disproportionately affects the often-overlooked Appalachian region. This area faces unique barriers preventing better access to quality Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) treatment facilities despite opioid-related deaths continuing to rise. An especially vulnerable population in this region are pregnant and postpartum women who face even more challenges acquiring proper drug treatment. Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT), also called Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), is considered the standard of treatment for OUD and reduces the effects of NAS, yet it is heavily stigmatized and underutilized in populations who could benefit from the medication. This …
Exploring Academic Goal Commitment And Grit In College Education: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of African American Male Graduates, Anthony Earl Reid
Exploring Academic Goal Commitment And Grit In College Education: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of African American Male Graduates, Anthony Earl Reid
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to explore how African American male graduates experience and understand academic goal commitment and grit regarding college education in a small Southeastern regional North Carolina district. Duckworth’s grit theory was the framework used to explore the learning problems students encounter based on the premise that everyone can use the constructs of passion, perseverance, sustained interest, and sustained effort toward achieving long-term goals. Data from 10 African American male graduates came from a questionnaire; one-on-one, open-ended interviews; and focus groups. The approach used for data analysis was reactive awareness toward bringing a …

A Perfect Storm: Exploring The Impact Of The 2020 Sociopolitical Climate And Covid-19 On Police Attrition, Cullen Marshall Duncan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The spring and summer of 2020 created new challenges, related to strain, for the law enforcement profession. These challenges were precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the “defund the police movement.” The purpose of this study was three-fold: 1) to understand if the events of 2020 were responsible for increased police turnover, 2) to analyze retiree data pre- and post-spring of 2020, and 3) explore ways in which strain and turnover can be mitigated following critical events. The research design utilized in this study was a mixed method design. Bayesian modeling revealed support for the null hypotheses pertaining to the …
Techniques For Automating The Prediction Of Covid-19 Hospital Admission Risk, Joshua M. Landman
Techniques For Automating The Prediction Of Covid-19 Hospital Admission Risk, Joshua M. Landman
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Machine learning has catalyzed significant strides in improving the quality of predictions regarding patient health. However, significant specific expertise is still required to properly develop statistical and machine learning models that can perform those predictions. Automated machine learning, or AutoML, represents an opportunity to democratize the construction of machine learning models and enable stakeholders without that expertise to create those models. In this dissertation, I explore the feasibility of implementing an AutoML pipeline for predicting the risk of patients’ admission to the hospital within 30-days of their first positive COVID-19 test by presenting a series of methods that (1) assess …

Understanding Recidivism: A Phenomenological Study Of Repeat Offenders' Lived Experiences Under Placer County, California Probation Supervision, Andrew Stephenson Beasley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This transcendental phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of repeat offenders under probation supervision within Placer County, California. The hierarchy of needs theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. The central research question was: What are the lived experiences of the repeat offenders under Placer County, California probation supervision? The three guiding questions asked the following: 1) How do offenders describe their lived experiences as a repeat offender? 2) How do offenders describe the support or lack of support from correctional intervention? 3) How do participants perceive the challenges experienced after being released back to the community? …
Agents Of Redemptive Hope: Churches And Communities Addressing The Problem Of Anger And The African American Adolescent Male, Reginald M. Robbins
Agents Of Redemptive Hope: Churches And Communities Addressing The Problem Of Anger And The African American Adolescent Male, Reginald M. Robbins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Many African American adolescent males struggle with controlling their anger leading to abusive and addictive behaviors. The question is, should the Churches respond, and if so, how can they help? This paper argues that the Church must reach out with the compassion and healing message of the gospel to the at-risk young Black males who are having difficulty dealing with anger issues to ensure a positive future for the next generation of strong and stable Black men.
Exploring Unknown Patterns Of Criminality In Homicide: A Quantitative Exploratory Analysis Of Crime In Macon-Bibb County, Santel Dion Smith
Exploring Unknown Patterns Of Criminality In Homicide: A Quantitative Exploratory Analysis Of Crime In Macon-Bibb County, Santel Dion Smith
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The phenomenon of violent crime and homicide has largely been of interest to criminologists and sociologists for years, with correlating implications on the socioeconomic, sociocultural, and political landscape. Over the past two years in the United States, there has been a significant surge in both violent crime and homicide in the country, prompting calls for policy action to mitigate the impacts on vulnerable populations. In Macon, a similar upward trend in violent crime and homicide has emerged, even exceeding the average violent crime rate recorded nationwide (Stebbins, 2021). Despite the rising crime rates, there is a scarcity of literature on …
Male Domestic Violence Offenders' Experiences In A Batterer Intervention Program: A Case Study Of One Batterer Intervention Program In Central Indiana, Katrina A. Thomas
Male Domestic Violence Offenders' Experiences In A Batterer Intervention Program: A Case Study Of One Batterer Intervention Program In Central Indiana, Katrina A. Thomas
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Domestic violence is a significant concern in the United States. Twenty people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2020b). In Indiana, 42.5% of women experience intimate partner physical or sexual violence or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 2020a). Perpetrators of domestic violence are often mandated to attend batterer intervention classes. Effective batterer intervention programs are essential to victim safety and decrease the likelihood that the perpetrator will engage in domestic violence behaviors in the future. However, the effectiveness of existing batterer intervention programs may not be …

Examining The Incorporation Of Restorative Practices With Traditional Discipline Policies In The American South: A Case Study, Anna Elizabeth Bryson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this single embedded case study was to describe the way in which restorative discipline practices are implemented alongside traditional discipline policies by the faculty and staff in one public school district in the American South. The theories that guided this study were pragmatism and Bandura’s social learning theory, as they explain how discipline policies can be co-mingled to offer the best support for all stakeholders. The methodology for this study followed the single embedded case study design and included maximal purposeful sampling of faculty and staff from across the district. Data collection took place through individual interviews, …
(2021) The Theory-Application Gap In Non-Clinical Settings, Victoria Rodriguez
(2021) The Theory-Application Gap In Non-Clinical Settings, Victoria Rodriguez
Louisiana Journal of Counseling
Theoretical orientation is used to assist clinicians in understanding client behavior, treatment plan development, and evaluating treatment progress. Though the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) places a great emphasis on the importance of using theory in counseling, there is significant research that points to the existence of a gap between counseling theory and the application of theory within the therapeutic process (Murray, 2009; Proctor, 2004). This paper reviewed the barriers that counselors face when applying theory in community mental health settings, schools, medical settings, and, correctional facilities. The literature suggested that there are often distractions …

Impact Of The Russia-Ukraine War On Education And International Students, Fakir Al Gharaibeh, Ifzal Ahmad, Rima Malkawi
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study examines the effect of the Ukraine crisis on the national and international economy, which is intrinsically tied to education, research, and science. As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the country’s economy plummeted sharply. This displaced many local and international students, teachers, and educators at Ukrainian universities, schools, and institutes, including girls and women. In this paper, we have highlighted the global effort to sustain higher education and accommodate displaced students. We have adopted an exploratory, descriptive analysis of media coverage of the Russia-Ukraine War and other statistical studies and articles generally addressing …
