Convicted Felons And Voting, Olivia Corley
Convicted Felons And Voting, Olivia Corley
Undergraduate Public Policy Capstone Projects
Felony disenfranchisement impacts nearly 4.6 million individuals in the United States with low-income communities and communities of color disproportionately affected. This policy is a practice that restricts the voting rights of individuals who have been convicted of a felony. This brief provides an overview of the challenges faced by those affected by felony disenfranchisement, as well as the implications for democracy in the United States. Highlighting a 50-state scan of state voter restrictions, I showcase the different laws and policies that restrict the voting rights of individuals with felony convictions across the United States. The history of felony disenfranchisement in …

Black Mothers’ Mothering Experiences: Race, Gender And Imprisonment, Ada Gamez
Theses & ETDs
In this study I examine the unique challenges faced by incarcerated Black mothers within the criminal justice system and how their race and gender contribute to the difficulties they face when returning to freedom. I pay particular attention to the way motherhood impacts Black mothers during and post incarceration. This study employs a combination of statistical data and content analysis. Statistical data provides a generalized view of the conditions of incarceration for Black women. Through content analysis of first-hand accounts of 4 incarcerated Black mothers I share in depth insight into how their lived experiences have impacted them in different …
Gender Bias In The Music Industry: A Study Of Favoritism And Implicit Bias, Karsyn Prescott
Gender Bias In The Music Industry: A Study Of Favoritism And Implicit Bias, Karsyn Prescott
Theses & ETDs
This thesis investigates gender-based favoritism in the music industry and its impact on social and occupational recognition. The study utilizes a stereotype content model to analyze value designations between genders, and the Favoritism Survey to assess gender preferences in musical artist ranking. Results show no significant association between favoritism for male artists and implicit bias, but suggest that men may be more likely to rank female artists lower than male artists. These findings suggest a measurable effect of gender norms and stereotypes on music industry perceptions, particularly for in-group members. Future research should investigate the limitations of the measures used …

Using Machine Learning To Analyze And Predict Crimes, And Their Impact On Society, Sally Samir Matter Isbaih
Theses
Criminal activity is on the rise everywhere and it refers to an illegal act that is subject to legal penalties. Crimes can range in severity from less serious offenses like traffic infractions and smalltime larceny to more serious ones like murder, robbery, and fraud. While those who have committed such crimes and been adjudged guilty by a court of law are known as criminals. They may lack education, be underprivileged, employed, or unemployed, or they may be wealthy. Add to this, crime may be committed differently depending on a number of variables, including family history, religion, gender, and so on. …

Foreword: Looking Back To Move Forward: Exploring The Legacy Of U.S. Slavery, Suzette Malveaux
Scholarly Articles
This year, the 30th Annual Ira C. Rothgerber Conference brought together scholars, lawyers, and community leaders from all over the country to discuss one of the most salient issues today—the legacy of U.S. slavery. Centuries of systemic racism and discrimination following the brutal chattel slavery of African Americans has resulted in Black Americans disproportionately faring worse on virtually every economic and social measure today. Metrics along education, housing, health, environment, and justice axes reveal a country still divided along racialized fault lines. Following the through line from slavery to the present brings us to an uncomfortable place. This is where …

Capacity-Building Project To Progress The Implementation Of International Instruments To Combat Iuu Fishing (Capfish) : Workshop 3, 18-21 October 2022, World Maritime University
Capacity-Building Project To Progress The Implementation Of International Instruments To Combat Iuu Fishing (Capfish) : Workshop 3, 18-21 October 2022, World Maritime University
Reports
Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing is a complex and multifaceted problem, with dire consequences for aquatic ecosystems, coastal communities, fishers and fish workers, and economic and national security. It particularly affects developing countries, and is estimated to cost the global economy USD 20 billion each year. This represents foregone taxes, license fees, and revenue from resources that could have been legally exploited. Future opportunities are also lost as fish stocks dwindle and collapse, with knock-on socioeconomic effects. As those involved in IUU fishing seek to cut costs wherever possible, and are often involved in other illegal activities, IUU fishing …

Abolishing Police Consent Searches Through Legislation: Lessons From Scotland, Josephine Ross
Abolishing Police Consent Searches Through Legislation: Lessons From Scotland, Josephine Ross
American University Law Review
Why have U.S. civil rights organizations omitted the abolition of consent searches from the panoply of recommended police reforms? As over 90% of all searches of cars and pedestrians in the United States are based on consent, this begs the question. The Supreme Court created the consent loophole so that police who lacked probable cause could nevertheless search pockets and cars. In the American context, consent searches bolster racial profiling and enable police harassment.
Americans do not have to wait for the Court to change the law. States and cities have the power to close off this loophole through legislative …
Is It Science Or Storytime? Expert Testimony Evaluating Child Witness Credibility In Sexual Assault Cases, Elizabeth I. Boals
Is It Science Or Storytime? Expert Testimony Evaluating Child Witness Credibility In Sexual Assault Cases, Elizabeth I. Boals
American University Law Review
While jurors struggle with determining any witnesses’ credibility, an even more arduous task is determining the credibility of a child victim in a sexual assault case. Due to developmental immaturity, children lack important recall and communication skills, and the well-established procedures of direct and cross examination are ineffective at producing accurate and complete trial testimony. Despite the adversarial system being proven ineffective in these contexts, American courts remain hesitant to admit expert testimony based on established psychology tools. Specifically, courts have questioned the application of Statement Validity Assessments (“SVAs”), to assist jurors in evaluating witness credibility, as they believe such …
The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck
The Interpretive And Relational Work Of Financial Innovation: A Resemblance Of Assurance In Islamic Finance, Aaron Z. Pitluck
Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology
What social forces shape the trajectory of novel, moralized forms of finance such as social finance, green finance, or Islamic banking and finance? More broadly, how do agents mobilize arguments and organize each other to create any form of financial innovation? This article addresses both questions by contributing an ethnography of a novel financial innovation pseudonymously named Sukuk Illumination, an internationally traded moral alternative to a corporate bond. This article’s findings both elaborate and subsume existing functionalist and critical explanations of financial innovation. The central argument is that we can better understand what causes financial innovation and the trajectory that …
The Slippery Concept Of "Object And Purpose" In International Criminal Law, Patrick J. Keenan
The Slippery Concept Of "Object And Purpose" In International Criminal Law, Patrick J. Keenan
American University International Law Review
In little more than twenty-five years, the field of international criminal law has grown from a small slice of public international law into a functioning system of international justice, complete with multiple juridical bodies and substantial scholarly attention. Building on the legacy of the Nuremberg Tribunals and drawing from international humanitarian law, human rights law, and domestic criminal law principles, international criminal law has become its own discipline. Creating any new field of law is a complicated endeavor; this is especially true when the field affects and is affected by so many politically sensitive issues. Throughout this doctrinal experiment, one …
