Designing Ai For Courts, Jumpei Komoda
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is developing at an incredible pace and society has subsequently gone through rapid changes, but courts have been left behind due to the delay in utilizing AI technology. This delay in the implementation of advancing AI technology inhibits courts from improving the speed and quality of legal services. This Article introduces how AI is currently used in courts and discusses its benefits and risks, controversies, and the issues surrounding the utilization of private vendor products. Further, this Article shows how AI can help courts improve their legal services and argues that to anticipate the risks and controversies …
The Clinical Profile Of Psychopathy, Patrick Carabell, Patrick J. Carabell
The Clinical Profile Of Psychopathy, Patrick Carabell, Patrick J. Carabell
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
People with psychopathy are characterized as callous, non- empathic, manipulative, impulsive, and crime prone. The definition of psychopathy is imprecise, and the condition is not recognized as a mental disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5-TR). This project examines research on the spectrum of traits and behaviors that constitute psychopathy. We compare psychopathy with antisocial personality disorder and other similar clinical profiles in terms of how such anomalies are assessed, managed, and treated in different settings. We posit that the further codification of psychopathy as a diagnosable disorder could help in identifying interventions and treatments for this condition.

Gender And Ethnic Disparities In Students' Perceptions Of How Different Groups Of Persons Suspected Of Possessing And/Or Selling Illegal Drugs Are Treated In The Criminal Justice System., Manuel J. Carvajal, Assma Twahir, Ioana Popovici
HPD Articles
Ethnic minorities and individuals of low socioeconomics status are disproportionately more likely to be detained, arrested, and convicted and receive longer sentences for drug offenses. This article explores gender and ethnic differentials among college students' perceptions on the criminal justice treatment of different gender, ethnic, and income groups applied to alleged drug offenders. It uses survey data provided by students at a large public university in South Florida. A two-way classification model examines the nature of disparities in perceptions. Students perceive widespread ethnic inequalities and female and Black students perceive greater disparities in the criminal justice system for all disadvantaged …
A Mixed Methods Approach To Police Decertification, Lacey Roughton
A Mixed Methods Approach To Police Decertification, Lacey Roughton
Theses and Dissertations
The decertification of police officers is an important mechanism for law enforcement accountability for those who engage in misconduct, however, we have limited knowledge on the processes and outcomes of this form of police accountability. By using a convergent mixed methods design, the purpose of this study was to understand the process in which police decertification occurs and factors that influence decertification decisions in a Southern state. The data for this study included decertification case evidence packets, observational data from decertification hearings, and in-depth qualitative interviews with commissioners involved in police officer decertification case decisions. The findings from this study …
“It Takes A Village”: The Implications For Gender Roles On Appalachian Family Dynamics, Taryn Jayde Rollins
“It Takes A Village”: The Implications For Gender Roles On Appalachian Family Dynamics, Taryn Jayde Rollins
Undergraduate Theses
When we hear the word “Appalachian”, many will look towards the countless examples of negative stereotypes displayed in the media. From Hillbilly Elegy to hyperbolized stories of blue people in the mountains, Appalachians have been perpetuated as backward, dirty, incestual, and stupid. Through incessant dehumanization by the media, Appalachian communities have been ignored and even blamed for their disparities. However, there are historical and social implications factors that stemmed from the major shift in the economic makeup that has led to Appalachian poverty and in turn, shaped the culture and values of the region. In addition, due to geographic isolation, …
The Correlation Between Traumatic Brain Injury And Incarceration Among Adult Males In The United States, Shadi Shams
The Correlation Between Traumatic Brain Injury And Incarceration Among Adult Males In The United States, Shadi Shams
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The United States has one of the largest growing prison populations in the world. A large amount of social and economic resources go towards the cost and maintenance of correctional facilities each year. Additionally, the current correctional programs are insufficient in assisting inmates with getting back to society; especially those with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who often remain undiagnosed and are usually treated unfairly in the prison system instead of receiving the appropriate help. Prior scholarly work has shown that patients in the post-TBI stage are more likely to enter the judicial system. In the recent population-based cohort study, the …
What The United States Could Learn From Norway: Training Police Officers To Be Social Workers, Not Warriors, Liana Brown
What The United States Could Learn From Norway: Training Police Officers To Be Social Workers, Not Warriors, Liana Brown
University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review
This note compares the training of police officers and its consequential effects in the United States versus that of Norway. In the United States, the lack of national training standards, in conjunction with an emphasis on technical skills and weaponry, has further perpetuated the “Warrior mindset.” The “Warrior mindset” reflects the rhetoric that officers are akin to combatants in a war, in which they have a duty to safeguard the rest of civilization against criminals that can strike at any moment. Contrastingly, the training programs for police officers in Norway include a consolidated and robust three-year education program that emphasizes …

“Take The Motherless Children Off The Street”: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome And The Criminal Justice System, Michael L. Perlin, Heather Ellis Cucolo
University of Miami Law Review
Remarkably, there has been minimal academic legal literature about the interplay between fetal alcohol syndrome dis- order (“FASD”) and critical aspects of many criminal trials, including issues related to the role of experts, quality of counsel, competency to stand trial, the insanity defense, and sentencing and the death penalty. In this Article, the co-authors will first define fetal alcohol syndrome and explain its significance to the criminal justice system. We will then look at the specific role of experts in cases involving defendants with FASD and consider adequacy of counsel. Next, we will discuss the impact of FASD on the …

Six Feet Apart: A Deeper Look At The Psychological Effects Of Covid-19, Ellen M. Komp, Stephanie Afful
Six Feet Apart: A Deeper Look At The Psychological Effects Of Covid-19, Ellen M. Komp, Stephanie Afful
The Confluence
There has been little research conducted on the impact that COVID-19 has had on people, both at an individual and group level. The aim of our study was to see what effect COVID-19 stress versus general health stress has on collective self-esteem and how that translates to political values. Collins and colleagues (2021) studied how political identity impacts people’s level of concern regarding COVID-19, specifically that those who identified as Democrats experienced more distress surrounding COVID-19. Social Identity Theory explains that stressors can result in lower collective self-esteem (Crocker & Park, 2003). To examine this, we compared collective self-esteem and …

The Myth Of Wellness: Deconstructing High, Contemporary Black Maternal Mortality Rates In The United States, Inaara Sultanali '23
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
Maternal mortality is widely acknowledged as one of many general indicators of overall health of a population, of status of women in society, and of functioning of the health system (World Health Organization [WHO], 2001). The United States, among one of the most high-income countries, ranks near the top in maternal mortality and the trend is increasingly exacerbating (Association of American Medical Colleges [AAMC], 2022). There are stark racial disparities within the United States’ maternal mortality rates; Black women in the United States are three to four times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related death than their White counterparts …
Redefining Anger For Sexual And Gender Minorities Using Art As A Visual Voice, Kirsten Ranheim
Redefining Anger For Sexual And Gender Minorities Using Art As A Visual Voice, Kirsten Ranheim
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Art therapy is an increasingly popular approach for addressing trauma and anger in clinical settings. This literature review explores the connections between art therapy, trauma, gender, and anger, drawing on a range of studies and theoretical perspectives. Background is provided on the history of anger within the context of societal institutions, interpersonal power dynamics, psychiatric nosology, and social justice movements. The review concludes that art therapy is ideally suited as a trauma-informed approach to addressing anger in the therapeutic setting. This is due to the unique opportunities that art making provides for helping individuals express and process their emotions nonverbally, …

The Influence Of Rejection On Life And Health Outcomes Among Transgender And Gender Non-Conforming Adults In The U.S., Trye Mica Price
Theses and Dissertations
Rejection is a widespread and problematic issue that impacts transgender and gender non-conforming individuals throughout their lives. Transgender people are likely to experience gender-based rejection from their families, at school during their youth, from employers and co-workers, and religious organizations. Past research has shown that rejection from certain people and organizations can influence outcomes such as homelessness, sex work engagement, and issues with psychological distress. For instance, familial rejection has been shown to be a consistent factor associated with homelessness and mental health issues among gender minorities. However, there is limited knowledge on how school, workplace, and religious rejection can …
“You Taught Us How To Change The World”: A Critical Autoethnography Reimagining The Future Of Education, Isabella Howard
“You Taught Us How To Change The World”: A Critical Autoethnography Reimagining The Future Of Education, Isabella Howard
Undergraduate Theses
As schools become more culturally and linguistically diverse, we need trained, well-prepared educators that value students for who they are, build on their backgrounds, and maintain their unique identities in the classroom. An asset-based, culturally sustaining approach to teaching incorporates theoretical grounding, a consideration of global identities, and a sociopolitical edge that allows students to thrive and think analytically. Through this approach, we can give students more confidence in their abilities as learners by activating their prior knowledge and experience to break down the content and build understanding of it, and we can connect the students to their learning, providing …
Gnsi Decision Brief: Hunger As A Weapon, Tad Schnaufer, David Himmelgreen
Gnsi Decision Brief: Hunger As A Weapon, Tad Schnaufer, David Himmelgreen
GNSI Decision Briefs
Overview
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs places physiological needs as the foundation of all others.i The needs of food, water, and shelter are referred to as objects indispensable to survival (OIS). A person will think of little else until these basic needs are met, hence the power OIS have over populations. The concept of hunger as a weapon dates to the beginning of written history with Homer’s Iliad describing the siege of Troy. In war, military leaders often consider foodstuffs as it relates to their war effort while analyzing ways to use this basic need against their foe. As the quote …
Not A Monolith: Influence Of Race And Religiosity On Muslim Perceptions Of Police, Arsala Aneeq Khan
Not A Monolith: Influence Of Race And Religiosity On Muslim Perceptions Of Police, Arsala Aneeq Khan
Theses and Dissertations
Muslim perceptions of police are not often understood. In order to better understand these attitudes, this dissertation approached Muslim respondents with two main factors in mind: racial identity and religiosity, both identities that often set Muslims apart from other Americans. This dissertation asked respondents four questions about police respect, police importance, police use of force and police defunding. The data for this dissertation was collected by Yaqeen Institute of Islamic Research in summer 2020. In order to compute these questions, a series of structural equation models were run. Findings included Muslim respondents who were aware of discrimination in mosques and …

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
I am an intern for the Immigration and Naturalization Program at Catholic Charities. This program provides assistance to immigrants who are currently seeking legal assistance in their immigration process. As an intern, I have been assisting victims of domestic violence and assault by writing and translating their personal statements. These statements are crucial to their application because they determine whether the applicant obtains legal status or not. I am also in charge of reviewing cases and making sure that prior documentation (police reports and applications) reflects the new documentation. I work alongside very skilled lawyers, who have kindly guided me …
The Impact Of Age And Race On Impressions Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Victims, Shaelyn Donovan
The Impact Of Age And Race On Impressions Of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Victims, Shaelyn Donovan
Honors Program Theses and Projects
In the present study, we examined perceptions of domestic minor sex trafficking victims based on the race and age of the victim using a mock juror paradigm. We hypothesized that participants exposed to Black victims and older victims would yield fewer pro-victim judgments, including fewer guilty verdicts and lower victim credibility. Likewise, we hypothesized there would be an interaction between victim race and age where the older Black victims would yield the fewest pro-victim judgments, and the younger White victims would yield the most. Additionally, we anticipated that participants with colder feelings toward younger teens on a feelings thermometer measure …

The LDA and BERT algorithms were used for the topic modeling, and coherence scores were computed to evaluate the quality of the models. The results of the study show that the LDA and BERT models …
Relational Connections For Youth Aging Out Of Foster Care: A Policy Content Analysis, Heather Miller
Relational Connections For Youth Aging Out Of Foster Care: A Policy Content Analysis, Heather Miller
Social Work Doctoral Dissertations
Social work professionals and policymakers are faced with the dilemma of older youth exiting foster care each year with poor outcomes, lacking resources and supports that make successful transitions a challenge. Research suggests that youth who have a supportive relationship with a consistent and trusted adult to help navigate the transition to adulthood supports a youth’s successful transition from care. The Federal John H. Chafee Foster Care Program for Successful Transition to Adulthood, initially birthed from the Foster Care Independence Act of 1999 and revised through the Family First Prevention Services Act of 2018, provides states with funding and guidance …

To anticipate the spread within the Penitentiary (Lapas), the Ministry of Law and Human Rights is releasing prisoners, through accelerating assimilation and parole. Similar policies have also been carried out by other countries in the world and are recommended by international institutions, such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes. However, the main problem behind this policy is the overcrowding condition in …

In the criminal procedure scholarship, there is no standard term to describe it. This article will refer to such ritual as a presentation of suspects. This ritual has also been practiced around the world with different methods and has a long history, especially in the United States. This article discusses the presentation of suspects and question whether such a ritual …

Impact Of Career And Technical Education Among High School Students In Texas, Tammy Ridgway
Theses & Dissertations
Existing research documents the importance and relevance of career and technical education (CTE) throughout American history. Beginning with the passage of the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 to the passage of the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century in July of 2018, federal and state legislation continue to shape vocational education within our public-school systems. The literature provides strong evidence between student success, in terms of high school graduation rate and post-secondary educational attainment, and the participation in career and technical education during the high school years. This dissertation analyzes whether dual credit career and technical education …
