Online But Unlawful Sales Of Unapproved And Misbranded Prescription Drugs: Internet Pharmacy Compliance With Food And Drug Administration Warning Letters, Yam B. Limbu, Bruce A. Huhmann
Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Consumers increasingly use online pharmacies. However, illicit online pharmacies endanger consumer welfare with unapproved and counterfeit drugs. By linking Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning letter content with observations of the 1108 websites cited in those letters, we identify factors associated with FDA-requested compliance and active/inactive website status. One in five online pharmacies failed to comply with FDA recommendations. Findings support the cost/benefit, social norm, and instrumental theories of compliance. Compliance declines with cost (e.g., when the FDA requests changes to more drug categories). Organized crime's social norms encourage law breaking; thus, illicit pharmacies comply less than other online pharmacies. …

Fair’S Fair: How Public Benefit Considerations In The Fair Use Doctrine Can Patch Bias In Artificial Intelligence Systems, Patrick K. Lin
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) expands relentlessly despite well documented examples of bias in AI systems, from facial recognition failing to differentiate between darker-skinned faces to hiring tools discriminating against female candidates. These biases can be introduced to AI systems in a variety of ways; however, a major source of bias is found in training datasets, the collection of images, text, audio, or information used to build and train AI systems. This Article first grapples with the pressure copyright law exerts on AI developers and researchers to use biased training data to build algorithms, focusing on the potential risk …

Incarceration Experiences And Post-Release Drug Addiction Recovery Among Previously Incarcerated Women With A Drug Addiction, Chiao-Yu Yang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Aims: This dissertation research explores incarceration experiences among adult women with drug addiction histories. It aims to enhance our knowledge of the meaning of incarceration and the prolonged influence of the experience on women’s drug addiction recovery, filling knowledge gaps regarding women, substance use, and incarceration. Methodology: The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with twenty-two (22) formerly incarcerated women in the Northeast and Midwest United States. A phenomenological approach was used to explore the meaning of incarceration to the participants; the deprivation model of imprisonment, the life course theory, intersectionality, and the therapeutic jurisprudence perspective guided the analysis. Findings: Women with …
Temperature And Convictions: Evidence From India, Terry Ann Craigie, Vis Taraz, Mariyana Zapryanova
Temperature And Convictions: Evidence From India, Terry Ann Craigie, Vis Taraz, Mariyana Zapryanova
Economics: Faculty Publications
High temperatures have been shown to affect human cognition and decision-making in a variety of settings. In this paper, we explore the extent to which higher temperatures affect judicial decision-making in India. We use data on judicial decisions from the Indian eCourt platform, merged with high-resolution gridded daily weather data. We estimate causal effects by leveraging a fixed effects framework. We find that high daily maximum temperatures raise the likelihood of convictions and these results are robust to numerous controls and specifications. Our findings contribute to a growing literature that documents that the negative impacts of rising temperatures are often …
One Training Is Not Enough: The Effects Of A Cultural Humility Training On Mentors’ Verbal Behavior, Anna Flitner
One Training Is Not Enough: The Effects Of A Cultural Humility Training On Mentors’ Verbal Behavior, Anna Flitner
Theses and Dissertations
Youth mentoring has been used as a method of prevention and intervention related to social, psychological, and academic outcomes for youth and adolescents, many of whom come from minoritized or low SES backgrounds. Although more diverse than other helping professions, mentors in formal programs are often white which can lead to potential cultural incongruence. To help mentors understand their own identities and work with youth of diverse backgrounds, mentoring programs have begun implementing cultural humility trainings. The current study examines the effects of a cultural humility training in mentoring. Mentors were randomly assigned to the control or training condition in …
Comorbid Adhd And Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease: Prevalence And Risk Factors, Sarah Bills
Comorbid Adhd And Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease: Prevalence And Risk Factors, Sarah Bills
Theses and Dissertations
Objective: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood condition that places youth at increased risk for deficits in attention and executive functioning suggestive of increased rates of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). There is pronounced inconsistency in reported prevalence rates for attention deficits and ADHD diagnoses among youth with SCD, which is due in part to variability in methodology of previous studies. The primary aim of the present study is to use systematic screening to identify the prevalence of inattentive ADHD symptoms and ADHD diagnoses in a pediatric SCD population seen at a large hematology clinic. A secondary aim is …
Black And Battered: The Impact Of The Violence Against Women Act On Women Of Color, Antonia D. Adams
Black And Battered: The Impact Of The Violence Against Women Act On Women Of Color, Antonia D. Adams
Senior Theses
Domestic violence is the intentional act of someone exerting control to harm another person. Domestic violence can impact individuals of all genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds. However, domestic violence has a disproportionate impact on Black women over their white counterparts. By analyzing raw SLED data, as well as peer-reviewed articles and personal interviews, this paper will explore whether the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) helped Black women, or if it failed to protect them. The hypothesis is that VAWA did not address the unique needs that Black women faced in domestic violence. Due to the myriad of circumstances that Black women …
An Evolutionary Comparative Study Of Congenital Stationary Night Blindness-Associated Trpm1 Genetic Variants Of Uncertain Significance In Horses And Humans Utilizing Caenorhabditis Elegans, Gabrielle Davis
Theses
Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a heterogeneous collection of genetic diseases affecting the eyes and vision in horses and humans. Current research has implicated several genetic mutations impacting different genes involved in phototransduction and signal transmission, including TRPM1. In horses, genetic mutations in TRPM1 also result in a leopard spotting pattern or leopard complex. The goal of this study is to examine the potential impact of CSNB associated TRPM1 missense variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Previous research in Caenorhabditis elegans have revealed an orthologous TRPM1 gene known as gon-2 that allows for comparative studies. The evolutionary relationship of …

Characterization Of Antimicrobial Properties Of Excrement And Functional Microbiome Of Black Vultures (Coragyps Atratus), Bridgette Gray
Theses
Black vultures, Coragyps atratus, are obligate scavenging birds that consume and dispose of decaying carcasses and carrion. They fulfill a key ecological niche in the environments in which they live. It has been observed that these vultures sometimes excrete bodily waste onto their legs. This adaptive behavior could help aid them in controlling bacteria and other microbes they encounter while stepping into a carcass to eat. This study directly examined the antimicrobial properties of the excrement of black vultures across various bacterial species utilizing a zone of inhibition test and a nematode species utilizing a survival assay. The black vulture …

Designing Human-Centered Algorithms For The Public Sector: A Case Study Of The U.S. Child Welfare System, Devansh Saxena
Designing Human-Centered Algorithms For The Public Sector: A Case Study Of The U.S. Child Welfare System, Devansh Saxena
Dissertations (1934 -)
Public sector agencies in the United States are increasingly seeking to emulate business models of the private sector centered in efficiency, cost reduction, and innovation through the adoption of algorithmic systems. These data-driven systems purportedly improve decision-making; however, the public sector poses its own unique challenges where policies, practices, and organizational constraints mediate all decisions. Algorithms that do not account for these pertinent aspects of professional practice frustrate practitioners, diminish the quality of human discretionary work, and amplify biases in decision-making. A human-centered research agenda can help us develop algorithms centered in social-ecological theories that support the decision-making processes of …
The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad
The Effect Of Resource Quality And Species Interactions On Dermestes Maculatus, Sarah Aliahmad
Student Theses
Forensic entomology is the use and application of insect information in legal matters, particularly in death investigations as insects utilize decomposing remains as a food source to complete their life cycle. Dermestes maculatus (DeGeer), larder beetles belonging to the family Dermestidae, are of considerable forensic importance since their larvae are typically found on human corpses during the later stages of decomposition – the advanced and dry/skeletal stages. Dermestes maculatus can be useful in estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) of a cadaver with advanced decomposition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the colonization (egg-laying) behavior of D. maculatus; …
