A Call To Action: Person-Centered Care Aligned With Reproductive Justice For Incarcerated Pregnant People With Substance Use Disorder, Essence Hairston, Aunchalee El Palmquist, Andrea K. Knittel, Kevin Mensah-Biney, Crystal M. Hayes, Amelia Mack, Hendrée E. Jones

School of Social Work Faculty Publications

Although research has proven that jails and prisons are ineffective in preventing or reducing substance use among pregnant people, the USA continues to rely heavily on the criminal legal system as its intervention. Pregnant people with an opioid use disorder are more likely to experience incarceration than pregnant people without an opioid use disorder. In some states, pregnant people are transported from jail to prison through the process of safekeeping in order to receive physical or mental health care that the jail does not provide, despite conviction status. When pregnant and postpartum safekeepers with an opioid use disorder experience incarceration, …

Cultivating Political Humility: The Role Of Value Framing On Policy Preference, Benjamin K. Noori Aug 2023

Cultivating Political Humility: The Role Of Value Framing On Policy Preference, Benjamin K. Noori

2023 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

This research project aims to explore the persuasive efficacy of using familiar rhetoric and appealing to familiar values when presenting someone with political arguments. Persuasive efficacy is defined as how much a person’s position and confidence is moved after the manipulation, and familiar values and rhetoric were determined by those associated with the participant’s self-described political affiliation. The participants were first asked their position and confidence on four political issues, then asked to fill out a political intellectual humility scale. For each issue, they were then shown one of four possible videos of a person giving a political argument, with …

Tracing The Roots Of A Poisonous Tree: On The Origins And Impact Of Criminal Terminology In A Civil Apprehension Scheme, Shani Mahiri King, Nicole Silvestri Hall Aug 2023

Tracing The Roots Of A Poisonous Tree: On The Origins And Impact Of Criminal Terminology In A Civil Apprehension Scheme, Shani Mahiri King, Nicole Silvestri Hall

New Mexico Law Review

Language is powerful. It can affect how we think about and treat groups of people. Poor language choices have a massive impact on immigration law, an area of the law that determines how groups of perceived “outsiders” are classified and regulated. Language and bias in judicial opinions have been studied, but less research has been done on poor language choices in immigration statutes. This Comment focuses on the harmful effects of poor language choices in immigration statutes, including the criminal terminology “arrest” and “warrant” in civil immigration apprehension statutes 8 U.S.C. Sections 1226 and 1357. Two fundamental problems arise when …

Big Data Policing Capacity Measurement, Ronald J. Coleman Aug 2023

Big Data Policing Capacity Measurement, Ronald J. Coleman

New Mexico Law Review

Big data, algorithms, and computing technologies are revolutionizing policing. Cell phone data. Transportation data. Purchasing data. Social media and internet data. Facial recognition and biometric data. Use of these and other forms of data to investigate, and even predict, criminal activity is law enforcement’s presumptive future. Indeed, law enforcement in several major cities have already begun to develop a big data policing mindset, and new forms of data have played a central role in high-profile matters featured in the Serial and To Live and Die in LA podcasts, as well as in the Supreme Court’s leading privacy and criminal procedure …

Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of The Implementation Of District Student Conduct Procedures., Amy Ghibaudy Aug 2023

Teachers And Administrators' Perceptions Of The Implementation Of District Student Conduct Procedures., Amy Ghibaudy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While there is a body of research about student conduct policies and procedures, there is a lack of research about how different role groups work together to implement these procedures and have a positive working interpersonal relationship. This sequential mixed methods case study design takes place in a large urban school district. In this study, I investigate the perceptions that educators have on the implementation of student conduct procedures in their school. I also explore how their perceptions of each other shape their interpersonal relationships. I used Normalization Process Theory (NPT) as my guiding theoretical framework. This study drew upon …

Stalking Victimization: Examining The Influence Of Victim-Offender Relationship On Victim Emotional Distress, Abigail M. Neef Aug 2023

Stalking Victimization: Examining The Influence Of Victim-Offender Relationship On Victim Emotional Distress, Abigail M. Neef

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Stalking victimization is receiving increasing attention in the media and research. Though research knowledge is growing there are still many aspects of stalking victimization that are not fully understood. This study aims to bring together two literatures relating to stalking: research on the role of victim-offender relationship and research on the emotional effects of stalking on victims. Using 2019 Supplemental Victimization Survey data, this study examines the direct relationship between victim-offender relationship and emotional distress. Findings indicate that victims who were stalked by a current intimate partner express more indicators of emotional distress than victims stalked by a personal acquaintance, …

The Relationship Between Poverty And Behavior Problems : Examining The Role Of Family And Parental Factors From An Ecological Systems Perspective, Alaina Marie Wodzinski Aug 2023

The Relationship Between Poverty And Behavior Problems : Examining The Role Of Family And Parental Factors From An Ecological Systems Perspective, Alaina Marie Wodzinski

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The large number of children from low-income households or living in poverty are at increased risk for a range of negative outcomes, including behavior problems. The Family Stress Model is a framework that can be used to describe how poverty may shape the development of behavior problems through its influence on family processes, including parental mental health, parenting, and household environment. While the Family Stress Model has been widely replicated, studies have rarely examined the context of infancy and toddlerhood, during which family-related processes tend to be more impactful in child development. Therefore, the present study evaluated two adaptations of …

“Walk The Walk”: A Narrative Inquiry Of Social Work Educators’ Participation In Social Movements For Racial Justice, Jessica R. Williams

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

The profession of social work has a long-standing history of social movement contribution, including in recent times. The May 2020 murder of George Floyd was an international flashpoint for global protests demanding racial justice, including within the US criminal justice system. Using Narrative Inquiry, the present study explored the stories of social work educators’ participation in current social movements for racial justice. Results from this study indicate that contemporary social work educators value a variety of social movement contributions, including protesting, community organizing, and incorporation of anti-racism in social work education. The participants of this study highlighted the importance of …

Reentry Services In Non-Urban Counties In Texas: A Directed Content Analysis Of Reentry Provider Websites, Monica Canizares

Social Work Theses - Archive

Health, social, and justice outcomes for returning residents after incarceration are concerning, with implications for service providers, especially in non-urban areas. Texas has made efforts to reduce its incarcerated population, but more attention is necessary to improve outcomes for returning residents. The state is only able to offer services to a small number of returning residents, and non-profit organizations are filling the gap of reentry service provision. This study aimed to understand what services are being offered by non-governmental reentry providers in non-urban areas of Texas through a mixed-methods, directed content analysis of reentry providers' websites. The results summarize features …

"A Show That Proves The Worst Monsters Are Real": Media And Social Media Impact On Criminal Trials And Post-Conviction Guilt As Perceived By Criminal Justice Students., Jennifer Leigh Patterson Aug 2023

"A Show That Proves The Worst Monsters Are Real": Media And Social Media Impact On Criminal Trials And Post-Conviction Guilt As Perceived By Criminal Justice Students., Jennifer Leigh Patterson

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

This study, using survey data collected in 2022, investigates how consuming true crime media, from media such as podcasts, influences fear and anxiety among criminal justice students. In addition, the relationship between viewing criminal trials in real time and forming opinions different from the sentencing juries is assessed. Results suggest that there is no significant relationship between the consumption of true crime media and fear or anxiety. Moreover, viewing criminal trials in real time does not have a signficant effect on the formation of opinons that differ from criminal juries. Limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

Committee Prosecution: Using Expert Opinion To Make Criminal Justice Descisions More Impactful, Ellison Berryhill Aug 2023

Committee Prosecution: Using Expert Opinion To Make Criminal Justice Descisions More Impactful, Ellison Berryhill

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform Caveat

Those uninitiated to the reality of the United States’ criminal justice framework may believe that judges are the most powerful actors in the system. These casual observers watch crime shows filled with trials where judges make rulings and yell at people who are out of line. Viewers may believe in the adversarial system as a war between zealous prosecutors seeking justice and defense attorneys fighting for their client’s innocence. They may think of judges as neutral arbiter who makes the ultimate decisions. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Alternatively, casual observers may think that the jury is the most powerful …

The Ghost Of The Neo-Slave Narrative : Jesmyn Ward’S Sing, Unburied, Sing And The Evolution Of The Black Gothic, Kabria Wimbush Aug 2023

The Ghost Of The Neo-Slave Narrative : Jesmyn Ward’S Sing, Unburied, Sing And The Evolution Of The Black Gothic, Kabria Wimbush

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Beloved by Toni Morrison, while clearly a neo-slave narrative, functions as a transition between the neo-slave narrative and the Black Gothic genre. Jesmyn Ward expands upon the Gothic elements in Beloved in her novel Sing, Unburied, Sing. When examined together, the two novels demonstrate how the Black Gothic was influenced by the neo-slave narrative. Where Beloved examines the effects of slavery on those who were directly victimized by it, Sing, Unburied, Sing shows how the lingering effects of slavery still exist in modern times. Ultimately, Ward offers possible courses of action to make the future more inclusive and diverse without …

Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Functioning Among 5th Grade Students: An Evaluation Of A Pilot Screening Assessment Protocol, Samuel Sutton Aug 2023

Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Functioning Among 5th Grade Students: An Evaluation Of A Pilot Screening Assessment Protocol, Samuel Sutton

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) functioning within schools has historically been considered in the context of educational impact. Currently, traditional models in education do not readily take into account changing ecological considerations for students, as they experience heightened population-wide academic and SEB concerns, increasing inequity for certain groups, and unique temporal factors like COVID-19. As a response, state and national initiatives are pushing toward earlier identification and prevention to better capture emerging ecological impacts. Prevention models utilize a Public Health Model (PHM) in schools like Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in promoting regular forms of assessment and linkages to leveled …

Evaluating The Association Between Social Determinants Of Health And Substance Use Disorder In A New York State Mental Health Population, Marum Sadiq

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

BackgroundOne in three adults in the United States had a mental illness or substance use disorder in 2021 and co-occurring disorders affect 7.6% of the adult population. Substance use disorders are more common in individuals with mental health problems, and serious mental illness is three times more prevalent in adults with substance use disorder (SUD). Social determinants of health such as socioeconomic status, criminal justice involvement, and unemployment may contribute to vulnerability for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between social determinants of health and substance use disorder in …

Constructing, Integrating, And Testing The Choice Set For Models Of Offender Decision-Making, Matthew Kijowski Aug 2023

Constructing, Integrating, And Testing The Choice Set For Models Of Offender Decision-Making, Matthew Kijowski

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Models of offender decision-making are premised on a rational actor weighing the perceived options within their choice set. One will choose to engage in a behavioral option that provides them with the greatest benefits and fewest costs as compared to the other perceived options. Even though the choice set is the foundation from which offender decision-making is built, criminologists, and offender decision-making scholars specifically, have assumed the choice set without directly measuring it. Without appraising the choice set, a multi-step process of decision-making is collapsed into a single step. This precludes an understanding of the composition of the choice set, …

Naming And Blaming Automated Decision-Making Systems: Analysis Of Contesting Algorithmic Injustice, Esra Gules-Guctas

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

This dissertation is centrally concerned with understanding how algorithmic harms evolve into legal claims in the context of automated public benefits determinations. Data collection consists of multiple source of data including semi-structured in-depth interviews, court opinions, expert witness reports, deposition transcripts, and investigative news reports. Analysis was conducted in parallel with data collection through iterative process of open coding. Results indicate that algorithmic errors are not merely technical glitches, they lead to cascading harms. In-depth analysis of algorithmic errors identified in legal cases reveals the type of errors that top-down formal audit mechanisms fail to capture. As statistical tools automated systems …

An Examination Of School Resource Officers' Self-Perception Of Role, Student Encounters And Duties, Alexandra Swanty Aug 2023

An Examination Of School Resource Officers' Self-Perception Of Role, Student Encounters And Duties, Alexandra Swanty

Master's Theses

As the rates of school shootings and school violence rise, the effectiveness of school resource officers (SROs) has come into question. As of now, there is no nationwide standard for the role and duties of school resource officers. Therefore, these differ from state to state and even school district to school district. One variable that had yet to be examined was the impact that location has on the roles of school resource officers. From this, three different school resource officer roles were identified: teaching-based role, community-based role, and law enforcement-based role. To determine the relationship between these variables, an online …

Mental Health And Parenting Among Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness With And Without Their Children, Rebecca Bergh Aug 2023

Mental Health And Parenting Among Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness With And Without Their Children, Rebecca Bergh

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Background: Parent-child separation and custody loss are common among parenting young adults experiencing homelessness (YAEH). These experiences may be traumatic for YAEH, a population already vulnerable to mental health disorders and high levels of trauma. Little is known about how YAEH who have their children with them compare to YAEH separated from their children in terms of mental health and risk and resilience factors. Further evidence is needed to better understand the parenting and mental health support needs among YAEH, particularly surrounding parent-child separation.

Aims: This study aimed to examine the characteristics of (1) parenting YAEH living with their children …

Exploring And Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Greeley’S Mental Health Co-Responder Program And “Squad 1”, Mikelle Angiuli Aug 2023

Exploring And Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Greeley’S Mental Health Co-Responder Program And “Squad 1”, Mikelle Angiuli

Master's Theses

Law enforcement officers are often the de facto emergency response for mental health crises despite having little to no mental health training. With nearly 20% of U.S. adults reporting experiencing a mental illness and recent police reform movements bringing attention to alternative policing practices and policies, there is arguably a need for comprehensive mental health treatment and emergency response in the U.S. (Mental Health America, n.d.). The cities of Greeley and Evans, Colorado have implemented a mental health co-responder program that involves individual mental health clinicians and a mental health ambulance, Squad 1, responding alongside police on mental health calls …

Restrictions And Criteria For Obtaining Funds After A Victimization: A Content Analysis Of Victim Compensation Statutes In The United States, Taylor Brake Aug 2023

Restrictions And Criteria For Obtaining Funds After A Victimization: A Content Analysis Of Victim Compensation Statutes In The United States, Taylor Brake

Master's Theses

Of the lasting effects after a victimization, a common denominator is the cost of services needed to heal from the harm caused. Since 2002, all states and territories in the United States have fully developed victim compensation programs to provide aid to victims in combating the financial impacts after a crime. The Victims of Crime Act and the Office for Victims of Crime have created requirements and suggestions for states to follow within their compensation programs. Unfortunately, there is no federal authority enforcing these requirements or ensuring consistency in state statutes surrounding victim compensation. Although there are multiple rationales as …

Perceptions Of Youth And Young Adults’ Encounters With The Police, Shantol Davian Mcintosh Aug 2023

Perceptions Of Youth And Young Adults’ Encounters With The Police, Shantol Davian Mcintosh

All Dissertations

Police officers rely on citizen cooperation to effectively perform their job duties. Studies have shown that many encounters between police and youth are influenced by extralegal factors, such as police perceptions of youths' attitudes and youth perceptions of police. In the last 10 years in the United States, too many youths have experienced excessive police force, resulting in serious physical injuries or death. The current study explored the perceptions of youth and young adults regarding their encounters with the police in the United States using largely unexplored datasets, which adds to its uniqueness from the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) …

Perspectives On Data For Good: The Emergence Of Embodied Data Discourses, Kimberly M. Gardner Aug 2023

Perspectives On Data For Good: The Emergence Of Embodied Data Discourses, Kimberly M. Gardner

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

In policy sciences, data have traditionally been a tool used by scientists and technocrats to guide state policy. Boundaries around what counts as data generally fall along traditional understandings that data are neutral, objective, and abstracted from individual bodies and experiences. Unfortunately, this understanding of data has a history of perpetuating harmful social hierarchies and, especially in the era of “big data”, mirroring our racial and gendered prejudices (Kitchin, 2014). More recently, however, data have been claimed as a tool by a different kind of actor operating in a unique environment. These new actors, such as some police officers and …

Understanding Connections Between Public Health Districts And Individuals Who Have Recently Been Released From Carceral Systems In Idaho, Ashley Harris Aug 2023

Understanding Connections Between Public Health Districts And Individuals Who Have Recently Been Released From Carceral Systems In Idaho, Ashley Harris

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Background

Gaining a better understanding of the relationship between public health and individuals recently released from the carceral system in Idaho is vital. According to the Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2020 Idaho had the highest female incarceration rate of all US states at twice the national average (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2020). The incarceration rate of women and girls has increased nearly 834% in the last 40 years and rates in Idaho follow this trend (Steinberg, 2018). Compared to 62% of women in prisons nationally, 80% of women in local jails report having children under the age of …
