Memes To Cope And Communicate, Priscilla (Nox) Ngo Jan 2023

Memes To Cope And Communicate, Priscilla (Nox) Ngo

Art Therapy | Master's Theses

The study’s objective was to observe the benefits of creating meme imagery around the participant’s stressors and how it affected the participants’ mood. This mixed-method study also looked into the meme’s ability to communicate their experience of their stressor to others to test whether it would be useful in a therapeutic setting. In order to measure affect change, the researcher utilized the PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule) before and after the meme creation process. The researcher tested communication through utilization of inter-raters to observe the created meme and respond upon what they believed the participant was going through. This …

Understanding Optimisation Processes With Biologically-Inspired Visualisations, Mathew Walter Jan 2023

Understanding Optimisation Processes With Biologically-Inspired Visualisations, Mathew Walter

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) constitute a branch of artificial intelligence utilised to evolve solutions to solve optimisation problems abound in industry and research. EAs often generate many solutions and visualisation has been a primary strategy to display EA solutions, given that visualisation is a multi-domain well-evaluated medium to comprehend extensive data. The endeavour of visualising solutions is inherent with challenges resulting from high dimensional phenomenons and the large number of solutions to display. Recently, scholars have produced methods to mitigate some of these known issues when illustrating solutions. However, one key consideration is that displaying the final subset of solutions exclusively …

Strategies Automotive Manufacturing Managers Use To Deliver Work In Alignment With Project Milestones, Sashidhar Mr. Sankaranarayanan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Project managers working in manufacturing firms in the automotive industry frequently face challenges such as cost overruns, schedule delays, and scope changes. Project managers often lack effective strategies to ensure that different departments deliver their work in alignment with project milestones, which can negatively affect project success rates. Grounded in the balanced scorecard framework, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore strategies managers in the automotive manufacturing industry used in their different departments to deliver their work in alignment with project milestones. The participants were three project managers who had successfully implemented strategies that reduced the …

Gesture And The Auditory Impact On The Perception Of Sound: A Performance Guide For Understanding Gestural Function On Percussion Pedagogy And Performance, Emily Lane Durocher Jan 2023

Gesture And The Auditory Impact On The Perception Of Sound: A Performance Guide For Understanding Gestural Function On Percussion Pedagogy And Performance, Emily Lane Durocher

Theses and Dissertations--Music

I will address the concept of physical gestures and discuss how they are applicable to the way percussionists visually and audibly perceive music. Through my research, I will focus on performance and pedagogy, seeking new possibilities for introducing percussionists at all ability levels to different articulations. Percussionists have traditionally been led to believe that they do not have the versatility over the initial musical attack and sustain that wind and string players do. This document has been developed to provide a more in-depth approach to how physical and musical gestures can function to create a more versatile and musical percussionist. …

Video Sign Language Recognition Using Pose Extraction And Deep Learning Models, Shayla Luong Jan 2023

Video Sign Language Recognition Using Pose Extraction And Deep Learning Models, Shayla Luong

Master's Projects

Sign language recognition (SLR) has long been a studied subject and research field within the Computer Vision domain. Appearance-based and pose-based approaches are two ways to tackle SLR tasks. Various models from traditional to current state-of-the-art including HOG-based features, Convolutional Neural Network, Recurrent Neural Network, Transformer, and Graph Convolutional Network have been utilized to tackle the area of SLR. While classifying alphabet letters in sign language has shown high accuracy rates, recognizing words presents its set of difficulties including the large vocabulary size, the subtleties in body motions and hand orientations, and regional dialects and variations. The emergence of deep …
