Security Of Text To Image Conversions, Zobaida Alssadi
Security Of Text To Image Conversions, Zobaida Alssadi
Theses and Dissertations
The use of images and icons to represent news or narratives has grown in popularity. Still, one critical problem is that they are not equivalent to language, making them vulnerable to adversary attacks. This study examines the impact of image-poisoning attacks based on polysemantic words and of image attacks based on cultural differences when converting text to images. Such attacks can lead to the loss of important information and create confusion and incorrect interpretations of the intended meaning, misinforming the general public. The study specifically focuses on possible effects in a news and story context. This study highlights the significance …

Words Evaporate, The Images Remain: Testing Visual Warnings In The Context Of Intentions To Vape Among U.S. Adults As An Expansion Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior (Tpb), Carl Arland Ciccarelli
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation applied the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) model variables of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, along with the variable of fear to explain individuals’ behavioral intentions to vape. Previous studies have explored the social appeal, intrigue, and potential consequences of vaping among adolescent and college student populations. However, these past studies have largely relied upon focus groups and self-reported data conducted among samples of teen, adolescent, and college student populations. Thus, the aims and designs of these previous vaping studies may have been lacking in construct validity and a theoretical approach from which to explain behavioral …

Designing Automatic Speech Recognition Technologies To Improve Accessibility For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing People In Small Group Meetings, Matthew Shoji Seita
Theses
Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) individuals face several barriers to communication in the workplace, particularly in small-group meetings with their hearing peers. The impromptu nature of these meetings makes scheduling sign-language interpreting or professional captioning services difficult. Recent advances in Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology could help remove some of these barriers that prevent DHH people from becoming involved in group meetings. However, ASR is still imperfect, and it contains errors in its output text in many real-world conversation settings. This research investigates whether there are benefits in using ASR technology to aid understanding and communication among DHH and …

Contextualizing And Integrating Practices: Reclaiming Authenticity Lost From Translating Workplace Engineering Practices Into K-12 Standards, Anne E. Leak, Lindsay M. Owens, Kelly Norris Martin, Benjamin M. Zwickl
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
K-12 students need to become familiar with engineering because 21st-century careers integrate engineering practices across all science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. While the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) emphasize learning real science and engineering practices, further work is needed to authenticate engineering for K-12 education. The NGSS are presented in a way that merges a single general practice with a core disciplinary idea and cross-cutting concept. Based on this framing and underlying epistemology, NGSS engineering practices are often implemented as overgeneralized, isolated, and largely context-neutral. Yet, in the STEM workplace, practices are rarely done in isolation from one …

Heritage arts and crafts are vital to a nation as they are an artistic expression of its cultural connotations as well as a reflection of its historical development. They are visual communication tools utilised to present and sustain the cultural characteristics and artistic traditions of a particular region. Many of these skills, however, are on the verge of extinction. According to the research published by the Heritage Craft Association [HCA] in May 2021, the total number of ‘endangered’ crafts increased to seventy-four, along with an additional twenty new ‘critically endangered’ crafts added between March 2019 and May 2021. Finding solutions …

To Prototype To Learn Fronting Uncertainties. A Pedagogy Based On Anti-Disciplinarity, Thinkering And Speculation, Francesco E. Guida
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper aims to present and discuss how teaching visual identity and experience design in Communication Design undergraduate education may be developed within an anti-disciplinary approach, adopting a speculative design framework. By adopting this approach, students become familiar with design as a problem-seeking and problem-finding practice, which encourages the development of concepts, scenarios, and results without any predetermined function. Moreover, they assume an open approach to final results and learn more about a design field intended as an open context with blurred borders. The project’s development is based on the principle of learning by doing, which consists of thinkering, making …

Missing Species: Discursive Design Activism, Margaret Rynning
Nordes Conference Series
Through a design case, “Missing species”, this article presents how design activism can be applied to a discursive design project and proposes a model for discursive design activism. The case study addresses the issue of biodiversity and invading plants due to humans’ interaction with nature and suggests how design may inform and engage societies and individuals through critical imageries, possibly leading to local engagement. Design activism and presenting design outside of galleries and spaces for designers may lead to a larger and more targeted audience for discursive design.
