Concrete Or Abstract? The Effects Of Picture Concreteness And Mental Illness Prevalence On Destigmatizing Mental Illnesses, Roma Subramanian, Sungkyoung Lee, Jonathan Santo, Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study investigated how picture concreteness (cartoon versus photo) and mental illness prevalence level (high versus low) in mental health messages influence mental illness stigma via a within-subjects online experiment (N = 92). Findings revealed that, compared to cartoons, photos elicited greater empathic closeness, decreased social distancing intention (especially for the low-prevalence mental illnesses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), and increased intention to support mental health policies. Compared to photos, cartoons increased comprehension (especially for the high-prevalence mental illnesses of depression and anxiety) and reduced personal responsibility for mental illness. Messages about high-prevalence mental illnesses compared to low-prevalence mental illnesses …

Media Literacy Policy In Morocco: A Strategic Milestone Missing, Abderrahim Chalfaouat, Karim Essoufi
Journal of Media Literacy Education
In the digital age, diverse walks of human life have reconfigured profoundly. In the Moroccan society, digitalisation plans and the skyrocketing numbers of internet users necessitate coping literacy policies. While several community initiatives have been taken to improve the quality of media literacy, they, as bottom-up efforts, cannot suffice to meet the needs of the whole Moroccan population. Rather, the absence of a central, nationwide, cross-sectoral media literacy policy significantly challenges the effective coordination of official strategies and community initiatives in media education. This article investigates current practices in media literacy in Morocco. Using document analysis, it delves into data …

Dealing With The Trauma Of Undiagnosed Dyslexia, Aisling Dolan
Journal of Franco-Irish Studies
The theme of my Master’s by research is an investigation into the condition and effects of dyslexia on one’s personality, academic experience and professional growth. I wish to examine and acknowledge the effects dyslexia has on an individual’s ability to learn and grow in a “typical” twenty-first-century society. I intend also to highlight the emotional impact this disability can have on a person’s sense of self and how they develop through childhood. I hope to demonstrate the link dyslexia has in fostering a visual form of thinking and expression. I also hope to evaluate how one’s dyslexia reveals itself in …

Visualizing Visual Neural Pathways In Virtual Reality A Neuroanatomy Tool, Mary Nguyen
Visualizing Visual Neural Pathways In Virtual Reality A Neuroanatomy Tool, Mary Nguyen
Theses
Visualizing the human brain and its structures in three dimensions is a complex and overwhelming task. Sensory pathways such as visual neural pathways, are important but difficult to visualize. With the rising popularity of extended reality (XR) in modern education, a Neuroanatomy tool in virtual reality (VR) was developed to allow students and other learners to explore the human brain and learn about its functions in an engaging way. Virtual reality enables a user to have the ability to visualize complex structures in the brain in a way that is otherwise impossible to see in a cadaver lab or web-based …
The Effectiveness Of K-12 Online Music Education During The Covid-19 Lockdown, Christopher Lafser
The Effectiveness Of K-12 Online Music Education During The Covid-19 Lockdown, Christopher Lafser
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite the successes of online education, students often learn and develop skills in classroom music ensembles that cannot be replicated in online learning. Virtual learning is a new tool for some educators and during the 2020-2022 COVID-19 Pandemic lockdown, many schools were not prepared for the sudden changes the lockdowns needed. Since the lockdown, there have been few studies which examine student music engagement in 100% virtual learning as compared to in-classroom instruction. This qualitative research study examines in what ways music students engage in 100% virtual learning compared to students in a traditional classroom in the areas of musical …

This document demonstrates the design process of an Augmented-Reality visual interaction design for improving and enhancing the astronomical observing experience for amateurs. Astronomical observation can be fun and romantic when sharing the experience with friends, family, or someone special. Sharing those magnificent moments with friends and family when astronomical events happen could be joyful. However, there are some inevitable barriers. In order to have a successful meteor shower observation, observers must follow a series of strict and professional rules that make the experience usually unaffordable for amateurs. As a result, I proposed a new way for amateurs that combined user …
“Homes For Ukraine”: Gendered Refugee Hosting, Differential Inclusion, And Domopolitics In The United Kingdom, Megan Crossley
“Homes For Ukraine”: Gendered Refugee Hosting, Differential Inclusion, And Domopolitics In The United Kingdom, Megan Crossley
Journal of International Women's Studies
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many Ukrainians have been displaced and sought refuge in other European countries, including the United Kingdom. Analyzing newspaper articles, public opinion polls, and emerging reports on the scheme, I argue that this policy draws on a particular conception of home, blurring the distinctions between private and public forms of hospitality towards certain kinds of migrants. In this moment of intensified public engagement with border politics, through a crisis displacing primarily women, this essay considers the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme as an overt manifestation of gendered domopolitics. In comparing the response to …

Mmmworld: Health Modern Food, Xindi Wang
Mmmworld: Health Modern Food, Xindi Wang
Theses
The societal concern for maintaining a healthy lifestyle has endured the test of time, especially given the transformative impact of globalization, urbanization, and industrialization on dietary patterns. The evolution of eating habits, propelled by the modernization of societies, has ushered in unprecedented changes in the way people consume and engage with food. While modern diets offer unparalleled convenience and variety, they also introduce a plethora of industrially processed products, contributing to the inadvertent neglect of the intrinsic value of natural ingredients. This shift has, in turn, resulted in profound implications for human health, giving rise to an increase in chronic …

Local Approaches To Address Global Challenges: Educating Local Innovators For Positive Social Change, Martha Leticia Silva-Flores, Melisa Ladrón De Guevara
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Aligning global concerns with local challenges is essential for achieving long-term sustainability. This entails addressing local communities’ needs and issues to develop effective and sustainable solutions. This approach not only benefits communities but also has the potential to impact the environment and society positively. Local innovators play a fundamental role in promoting sustainable development by devising creative and sustainable solutions to problems affecting their communities. However, in the case of local entrepreneurs in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (GMA), their ventures often have a fleeting lifespan, limiting their impact on global challenges. This research study, therefore, focuses on empowering these local …

The Column And The Pediment: The Persistence Of Values?, Areti Adamopoulou
The Column And The Pediment: The Persistence Of Values?, Areti Adamopoulou
Artl@s Bulletin
There is one icon dispersed worldwide and historically associated with higher values: the façade of a columnated building capped by a pediment. This simple vertical, horizontal, and triangular formation runs through the ages and is firmly associated with values and ideas stemming from Europe. It survived centuries of use and abuse, and served revolutions, nation-states, democracies, colonialism, totalitarian regimes, and commercial culture. It even reached the world of computer graphic symbols and still inspires artists. In this paper, I discuss this icon in terms of its diffusion and persistency and comment upon its link to Europe.
