The literature provides strong evidence between student success, in terms of high school graduation rate and post-secondary educational attainment, and the participation in career and technical education during the high school years. Data were collected from full-time, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic department employees (n = 1,139) in November 2019 and again in May 2020 following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and after the transition to remote …

Creating Student Leaders: Strategies For Midwest College, Ryan Hollibaugh May 2023

Creating Student Leaders: Strategies For Midwest College, Ryan Hollibaugh

Leadership Education Capstones

The need to build effective work teams and leaders is crucial to the success of a work team. This becomes difficult in a college setting when a manager employs college students. Employing college students means every year managers are losing senior classes and replacing graduates with new workers. This results in teams losing the most experienced workers and oftentimes team leaders. To counteract this, managers are constantly having to find new leaders on a yearly basis and also continue to develop leaders. This is a challenging task and results in transition periods while new employees and the new leader are …

Mega sporting events have faced increased scrutiny in recent decades for their negative economic impacts, externalities, and environmental effects. In my thesis, I will conduct a meta analysis of articles measuring the various impacts and effects of hosting a mega sporting event. I will begin by performing an extensive literature review of the various factors contributing to a mega sporting event’s …

Increasing College Students' Awareness Of Healthy Coping Strategies To Manage Stress, Evelyn Gallegos May 2023

Increasing College Students' Awareness Of Healthy Coping Strategies To Manage Stress, Evelyn Gallegos

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

College students often lack awareness of healthy coping strategies to manage stress. College students experience stress due to the number of responsibilities, such as having a job or being a student-athlete, as well as keeping up with coursework. Stress can result in feelings of being overwhelmed, depression, lower academic performance, and even a risk of dropping out. When college students learn healthy strategies to cope with stress, it improves their overall mental and physical well-being. To address the lack of stress management awareness, I created a one-day workshop for college students who are members of the Women’s Soccer Club at …

The Effects Of Personal Growth Initiative, Grit, And Spirituality On Competition Anxiety In Student Athletes, Taylor Smith May 2023

The Effects Of Personal Growth Initiative, Grit, And Spirituality On Competition Anxiety In Student Athletes, Taylor Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Personal growth initiative (PGI) is an intrinsically motivated engagement in growth processes that contribute to their ability to excel in sporting performance (Robitschek, 1998), and PGI may also predict their grit as well. Like PGI, team cohesion influences both performance and well-being in athletes, and little research has explored how spiritually oriented coaching influences team cohesion. This study explored PGI, grit, competition anxiety, intrinsic motivation, and the impact of spiritual involvement in sports on team cohesion. A sample (N = 45) of collegiate athletes at private Christian universities completed self-report measures in a survey. PGI was not a significant predictor …

Salivary Microrna As A Concussion Biomarker And The Implications For Athletic Trainers' Practices, Thomas Richard Campbell May 2023

Salivary Microrna As A Concussion Biomarker And The Implications For Athletic Trainers' Practices, Thomas Richard Campbell

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Many concussions are sustained globally each year; however, research suggests that a large number may go undiagnosed due to a reliance on subjective information from patients and limitations of current objective measures. Recently, efforts have been focused on identifying clinical biomarkers of concussions, including salivary microRNA (miRNA), to improve healthcare professionals’ concussion management practices. Even if salivary miRNA were shown to be a valid and reliable measure for managing concussions, healthcare professionals, such as athletic trainers (ATs), must be familiar with the tool and have positive attitudes toward the implementation into clinical practice. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was …

Meeting, Moving, Mastering - A Text Analysis Of The Aesthetic Attractions Of 'Wild Swimming', Dagmar Dahl, Åsa I. Bäckström Apr 2023

Meeting, Moving, Mastering - A Text Analysis Of The Aesthetic Attractions Of 'Wild Swimming', Dagmar Dahl, Åsa I. Bäckström

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Why are people fascinated by swimming in nature? This article addresses the aesthetic experiences of wild swimming as expressed by five wild swimming authors in their books. Drawing from aesthetic philosophy, we analyze the ways in which the appeal of wild swimming is described on three levels: the allure of water in the environment, the sensory encounter between water and the body, and the experience of moving in water. Furthermore, with reference to Seel’s concept of nature aesthetics (1996), the experience of wild swimming is analyzed in terms of contemplation, correspondence, and imagination. We can conclude that the special intensity …

The Argument For Sports Fandom And Its Unrealized Societal Benefits, Daniel Gonzalez Apr 2023

The Argument For Sports Fandom And Its Unrealized Societal Benefits, Daniel Gonzalez

Academic Festival

Sports fandom drives the success and continuation of sports franchises at all levels internationally, yet fans and fandom itself are often criticized. Like all things, sports fandom has both positive and negative effects; some negatives outweigh the positives, and vice versa. A lot of the positivity surrounding sports fandom is rooted in the unique connection fans seem to have to both “their” teams as well as one another. I use data and evidence from many resources to explore fandom's psychological, sociological, and economic effects on society and those within it. The main contributors to the negative stigma surrounding sports fandom …

The History Of Sports Inequality And How The Pressure On Female Athletes Affects Mental Health And Performance, Madeline Scarola Apr 2023

The History Of Sports Inequality And How The Pressure On Female Athletes Affects Mental Health And Performance, Madeline Scarola

Academic Festival

While physical health is a big part of female athletes and their performance, mental health is also an extremely important factor. The pressures that society puts on female athletes to constantly prove themselves equal to men, uphold their feminine image, and still be successful renders many female athletes to develop anxiety, depression, and eating disorders that will either cause harm to their performance, increase the likelihood of injury, or make them pull out of competition completely. As more elite female athletes are bringing conversations about the pressures they face and their mental health to the forefront, hopefully it will inspire …
