A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding The Links Between Mining, Climate Change And Selected Health Outcomes In India, Mary J. Cheruvillil
A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding The Links Between Mining, Climate Change And Selected Health Outcomes In India, Mary J. Cheruvillil
Dissertations and Theses
Despite ample evidence of the significant role that mining activities play in determining health outcomes, in India there is a dearth of comprehensive health studies that draw linkages between mining and health. The purpose of the following study is to investigate the impact of mining activities on population health in India using three different methods: ecological multivariable regression, exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and content analysis of government documents using a phenomenological approach. The first aim uses the ecological multivariable regression to examine associations between mining activities and children’s malnutrition outcomes at the district level. Census data, the Demographic Health …

Emotions As Social Objects In The Justice System: How Feelings Develop In Justice Processes And What They Do., Peyton Alexander Warman
Emotions As Social Objects In The Justice System: How Feelings Develop In Justice Processes And What They Do., Peyton Alexander Warman
Online Theses and Dissertations
Criminological research on emotionality and emotional demonstration in justice processes remains underdeveloped. One method of approaching the issue of understanding emotions in the justice setting is to conceptualize them as a form of social communication, impacted by the structure of the legal domain yet holding significant influence on their own. This thesis seeks to establish how emotions are rooted in social dynamics, and how the justice system, in both restorative and punitive contexts, including prison environments, creates specific social conditions that guide emotional demonstration and interpretation. The comprehensive review of established literature leads to the initial conclusion that emotions are …

Forgotten Loss: The Story Of Iowa's Deadliest Train Accident, Scott Foens
Forgotten Loss: The Story Of Iowa's Deadliest Train Accident, Scott Foens
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
At 8:18 AM on March 21, 1910, the lead tender of a Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railways “double header” passenger train left the tracks four miles outside Green Mountain, Iowa. Detoured because a freight train crash blocked the Rock Island’s main line to Waterloo, CRI&P operations in Cedar Rapids arranged for the two trains to travel west on the Chicago Northwestern’s tracks and then turn northeast towards Waterloo along the Diagonal, a section of Chicago Great Western road that was part of the Maple Leaf route. The wreck completely destroyed one wooden passenger coach and half of a second …
A Different Welcome Home: How Accusations Of Brainwashing Affected The Experience Of The Returning American Pows From The Korean War, Margaret Merithew
A Different Welcome Home: How Accusations Of Brainwashing Affected The Experience Of The Returning American Pows From The Korean War, Margaret Merithew
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
American POWs from the Korean War had a different experience than POWs from other wars. The POWs who returned from the Korean War faced a home front that was suspicious of them. Due to the prevalence of McCarthyism in America during this time, the military, government, media, and citizens all worried that the returning POWs may return as communists. The military and FBI investigated the POWs and court-marshaled a few for collaborating with the North Koreans while in the camp. The experience of what happened to the American soldiers in the POW camps has received much scholarly attention, but the …

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic literature review of research on the interplay between trust, distrust and control in interorganizational relations. The authors aim at diagnosing the current state of research along with gaps in the literature and then outlining opportunities for further research. The paper fulfills the aims by exploring the literature in four fields: (1) the understanding of trust, distrust and control, (2) interplay between trust and control, (3) relation between control and distrust and (4) relation between trust, distrust and control. Design/methodology/approach: The systematic literature review was conducted following the framework in …
Designing Social Connection: Older Adults And The Infrastructure Of Social Encounters, Bomin Kim
Designing Social Connection: Older Adults And The Infrastructure Of Social Encounters, Bomin Kim
Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
In recent decades, public space has gained significant attention in both design theory and practice as a critical components of sustainable development for older adults. With growing concerns about social disconnect, economic inequality, and environmental injustice, the revitalization of public space has become a critical piece in creating safe and just cities to foster social connection, health, and resilience for our aging population. I argue in this dissertation that older adults rely on an infrastructure of encounters to navigate social life and that designers and policymakers should critically examine how public spaces distribute and burden labor necessary to create weak …
Nobody Knows – Towards Operationalization Of Strategic Dilemmas Of Coopetitors, Patrycja Klimas, Joanna Radomska
Nobody Knows – Towards Operationalization Of Strategic Dilemmas Of Coopetitors, Patrycja Klimas, Joanna Radomska
European Management Studies
Purpose: This paper presents an operationalization framework that merges the concepts of coopetition and open strategy through the lenses of managerial dilemmas. Although both merged concepts have gained recent and increasing attention, they need sound operationalization, including operationalization when being blended. Therefore, the paper focuses on operationalizing and measuring strategic dilemmas of coopetition implemented as an open strategy. By doing so, the paper addresses the needs for developing measures and scales to allow for more detailed investigation and verification of the conceptual foundations of open strategy dimensions and accompanying tensions and paradoxes of coopetition. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is conceptual. Our …
Understanding The Audience In Framing Research: Empirical Evidence From Three Studies Examining Hiv Framing In China, Tianen Chen, Minhao Dai, Nancy Grace Harrington
Understanding The Audience In Framing Research: Empirical Evidence From Three Studies Examining Hiv Framing In China, Tianen Chen, Minhao Dai, Nancy Grace Harrington
Faculty Articles
Guided by framing theory, this three-phase mixed-methods study explored (a) how Chinese government-sponsored newspapers frame HIV and (b) framing effects on people’s HIV beliefs. A content analysis of two government-sponsored newspapers and a survey of 210 readers showed discrepancies in frame and frame valence. In-depth follow-up interviews with 15 media and public health experts revealed that the discrepancies were related to people’s attitudes toward the media and beliefs about HIV, which could further be explained by the political environment, media ecology, historical framing, and cultural identities in China. We discuss theoretical implications for framing theory and practical implications for HIV …

“Connecting Better And Wider”: A Constructivist Grounded Theory And Situational Analysis Exploration Of Community Resilience In The Anthropocene Among The Transition Network, Deanne M. Boisvert, Caroline Suransky
The Qualitative Report
For decades qualitative researchers have used grounded theory methodologies in their investigations. Although the grounded theory literature is extensive, less well documented are qualitative studies which incorporate complementary grounded theory approaches into their designs; or studies that validate the use of grounded theory strategies for applied research projects. This paper seeks to add to both margins of the grounded theory literature. First, it provides a detailed methodological account of how constructivist grounded theory and grounded theory situational analysis were used in a Ph.D. study exploring how ecologically concerned networks understand community resilience and respond to current and anticipated challenges of …
A Review Of Brenda Cossman's The New Sex Wars, Ashley Barnes-Gilbert
A Review Of Brenda Cossman's The New Sex Wars, Ashley Barnes-Gilbert
Feminist Pedagogy
In The New Sex Wars: Sexual Harm in the #MeToo Era, Brenda Cossman unpacks the contemporary debates of the #MeToo movement through the lens of the 1970s and 1980s feminist sex wars. Cossman seeks to deconstruct the binary conversation of the feminist sex wars, both in the past and present. She offers an alternative read of these debates, rooted in anti-carceral feminism and reparative justice. This book is a must read for scholars, activists, and educators alike, as she provides innovative analytical approaches that transform feminist praxis inside and outside the classroom, the academic journal, the courtroom, and the online …

Caste And The Classroom: A Review Of Wilkerson's Work, Evans-Amalu Kelsey
Feminist Pedagogy
Isabel Wilkerson’s (2020) Caste is a useful book to integrate into introductory courses in education training programs to discuss the sociological context of where the education system in the United States of America is situated. This book review suggests how preservice teacher programs may use Wilkerson’s work to bolster theoretical understanding in the inequitable structures education is built on, and what actionable steps can be taken both in and outside of the classroom.

Altering Attitudes On Climate Change: Testing The Effect Of Time Orientation And Motivation Framing, Kylie Clark, Aubrie Adams
CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change
Climate change has become a defining issue of the 21st century. According to a Pew Research (2020) survey, for the first time in its two-decade history, a majority of Americans now believe that dealing with climate change should be a top priority for the President and Congress, which is a 14% rise from four years prior. Nonetheless, this rise is accompanied by a deep partisan divide amongst citizens of the United States (U.S.) and Republicans are far less likely to consider climate change a top public priority with a roughly 50% partisan gap on the issue (Popovich, 2020). Thus, this …

Framing Complex Challenges, Joseph V. Sinfield, Romika R. Kotian
Framing Complex Challenges, Joseph V. Sinfield, Romika R. Kotian
Innovation Insight Series
Innovating to achieve impact at scale in ill-structured environments is a complex challenge, with numerous socio-techno-economic dimensions. Whether tailoring a product or service offering to meet the needs of a global customer base, forecasting the socio-economic implications of a new technology, or working to address a societal challenge in a low-to-middle income country, problems that encompass social, technical and/or economic uncertainty, significant variations in involved stakeholder characteristics, and even subtle differences across the focal environment, inevitably benefit from a holistic analysis that spans multiple levels of abstraction, encompasses a plurality of perspectives, and can be tailored to include contextual nuances. …

Beyond Economics And Politics : A Sociological Review Of Local Long-Term Care Service Provision In China, Zhen Tian
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
The socio-demographic transition presents a significant challenge that impacts the renewal of welfare arrangements and the reallocation of welfare responsibilities across sectors. Long-term care (LTC) services have emerged as a widely accepted strategy to promote the active daily living and human dignity of senior citizens. This study aims to assess the effective policy strategies employed in various Chinese contexts to address significant LTC policy concerns and synthesise lessons that can guide future policy decisions. The study addresses three questions to explore local variations in China's LTC service provision: (1) What differences exist in the long-term care services provision? (2) How …

Publishing Inequality In Lgbtqia+ Research In Psychology: A Content Analysis, Mackenzie L. Fingerhut
Student Theses
Despite the American Psychiatric Association’s removal of homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973 and ego-dystonic homosexuality in 1987, nonheteronormative sexual orientations remain stigmatized and underrepresented in scientific literature. To estimate the prevalence of LGBTQIA+ topics in popular psychological research, the author queried more than 20,000 articles from 1987 to 2022 in the two most cited journals in each of four major domains (cognitive, clinical, developmental and social). In addition, the author randomly queried 20% of all empirical articles published from 1987 to 2021 in the top eight empirical journals to understand how often sexuality …
Social Networks, Access To Healthcare, And The Health-Related Quality Of Life Of Young Informal Workers In Nigeria’S Construction Industry, Ayomide Oluwaseyi Oladosu
Social Networks, Access To Healthcare, And The Health-Related Quality Of Life Of Young Informal Workers In Nigeria’S Construction Industry, Ayomide Oluwaseyi Oladosu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Young informal workers in Nigeria face a significant decline in their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) due to their lack of control over their employment conditions. This problem is particularly pronounced among young informal workers in the construction industry, given its precarious and hazardous nature. To enhance HRQoL, these workers primarily rely on their social networks for support. However, given the level of hazards they encounter in the construction industry, social networks alone may not be sufficient to directly improve their HRQoL. Nevertheless, social networks can facilitate access to healthcare, which in turn may enhance HRQoL. Unfortunately, limited research has …
