The Solidarity Economy: A Way Forward For Our De-Futured World, Julie Matthaei, Matthew Slaats
The Solidarity Economy: A Way Forward For Our De-Futured World, Julie Matthaei, Matthew Slaats
The Journal of Social Encounters
As society contends with the ongoing economic, environmental and political crises perpetuated by racist patriarchal ecologically-destructive capitalism, there is a need to look beyond forms of inequality to the opportunity of solidarity. While histories of mutuality and reciprocity have long been present in economies around the world, it is in the last thirty years that global movements have begun to coalesce under the framework of the solidarity economy. This framework asserts a path forward towards a just and sustainable post-capitalist future, based in cooperation and care.. We begin by exploring how the solidarity economy framework and movement have been making …
Solidarity In Time Of Armed Conflict. Women’S Patterns Of Solidarity In Internally Displaced Person (Idp) Camps In Darfur, Western Sudan, Mawa Mohamed
The Journal of Social Encounters
This study, a vital part of a Ph.D. thesis, delves into the prolonged armed conflict's impact in Darfur, which has resulted in severe loss of assets and lives, disrupted livelihoods, and food insecurity. Among the most vulnerable are internally displaced women, primary targets of violence due to their caregiving roles and responsibilities. Addressing the gap in existing literature, this research explores the meanings, practices, experiences, and representations of solidarity among women residing in the Abu-Shouk IDP camp. Challenging conventional perceptions, the study highlights women's competencies and strengths, empowering them to develop unique coping strategies within the conflict context. It uncovers …

Exploring Adolescents’ Occupational Possible Selves: The Role Of Gender And Socioeconomic Status, Yaoran Li, Hanxiang Du, Ian Martin, Edward Hidalgo, Yang Jiang, Wanli Xing, Vitaliy Popov
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
Adolescence is an important stage in forming one's identity and developing career inspirations. The current empirical study aims to investigate gender and socioeconomic status (SES) differences in adolescents’ occupational possible selves. A total of 3336 sixth- to eighth-grade students participated in the survey research and reported (1) hoped-for occupation, (2) desire for the hoped-for occupation, (3) likelihood of attaining the hoped-for occupation, and (4) whether and what actions were taken toward the hoped-for occupation. A series of regression models and advanced natural language processing techniques were applied to the survey data. Results revealed evident gender differences and some nuanced SES …
Toward A Multilevel Sociology Of Fraud, Brooke Harrington, Camilo Arturo Leslie
Toward A Multilevel Sociology Of Fraud, Brooke Harrington, Camilo Arturo Leslie
Northwestern University Law Review
This Essay applies a distinctively sociological multilevel analysis to fraud to provide novel insights and recommendations on an old problem. Rather than treating fraud as a problem of “criminogenic environments” or of individual psychologies and motivations, this multilevel analysis investigates the ways in which individuals (the micro level) interact with organizations (the meso level) and institutional systems (the macro level) to produce fraud. We illustrate these interactions and the insight that an interactive analysis can provide by using ethnographic data from an in-depth case study of the R. Allen Stanford offshore financial fraud. The case, which occurred in the Caribbean …
From Streets To Silos: Urban Art Forms In Local Rural Government And The Challenge Of Regional Development, Emily Potter, Katya Johnson
From Streets To Silos: Urban Art Forms In Local Rural Government And The Challenge Of Regional Development, Emily Potter, Katya Johnson
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This chapter discusses the Wimmera-Mallee Silo Art Trail in Victoria, Australia, as a case study that highlights the advantages and pitfalls of creative placemaking in a local government-driven rural development through cultural programmes. The Silo Art Trail showcases the benefits to communities of collaboration between a rural local council with higher levels of government and private corporations, when it is led by locally-generated needs and insights. At the same time, despite the achievements of the Silo Art Trail, a lack of explicit cultural policy and the different priorities of differing policy agencies created tensions between competing interests. Reflecting on this …

Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Prostate Cancer 5-Year Survival: The Role Of Health-Care Access And Disease Severity, Christiane J. El Khoury, Sean A.P. Clouston
Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
Introduction: Prostate cancer (PCa) exhibits one of the widest racial and socioeconomic disparities. PCa disparities have also been widely linked to location, as living in more deprived regions was associated with lower healthcare access and worse outcomes. This study aims to examine PCa survival across various USA counties in function of different socioeconomic profiles and discuss the role of potential intermediary factors. Methods: The SEER database linked to county-level SES was utilized. Five-year PCa-specific survival using the Kaplan–Meier method was performed for five racial/ethnic categories in function of SES quintiles. Multilevel Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to assess the …

White Male Privilege, Diversity-As-Deficit, And Tokenism In The North American University: Reflections On Netflix’S The Chair, Annamma Joy
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Ji-Yoon, an Asian-American woman, is the newly appointed chair of the English department at Pembroke University, a lower-tier Ivy League school. Most of the department’s faculty are older and white and male, but do include a female white professor, Joan Hambling, clearly suffering from marginalization. There is also a young black faculty member named Yasmin McKay, whom Ji-Yoon wants to make the university’s first black tenured professor in the English department. Yaz, as they call her, has published in the top journals and is loved by her students, who flock to take her courses. There are other story dynamics dealing …

The Influences Of Acculturative Stress And Gender Roles On Sexual Subjectivity In European, Asian, And Latinx Immigrant Women In The U.S., Silvia Re
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
In the process of acculturation, cisgender immigrant women are at greater risk of experiencing acculturative stress, often entailing a reconsideration of their self-concepts and identities as members of new sociocultural contexts. Gender roles and sexual subjectivity are two identity features they can revise given their ties to culture and socialization. Results from previous studies suggest that cisgender immigrant women’s sociocultural contexts, related values, and attitudes may contribute to their levels of stress, sense of self-efficacy, self-esteem, and sexual subjectivity. This study aimed to fill gaps in the existing literature and raised awareness of the relationship between acculturative stress, gender role …

Who Is The Good Boy/Girl? Perspectives Of French Handlers In Aai On The Selection Of Their Dogs, Alice Mignot, Gérard Leboucher, Véronique J. Servais, Karelle De Luca
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) are well implemented in various health care settings; however, there is little data on the characteristics of the mediation dogs and their selection, which can influence the well-being of both the dogs and the beneficiaries. This study aims to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of French mediation dogs and the context in which they are selected to guide future research working on behavioral criteria for mediation dogs and help provide a basis for better selection of dogs in the field. To this end, we interviewed 111 French handlers in AAI, who work with at least …

Ever The Matchmaker: Connecting Mpa Grant Courses With Grant Professional Competencies, William Luke Parker
Ever The Matchmaker: Connecting Mpa Grant Courses With Grant Professional Competencies, William Luke Parker
Student Theses and Dissertations
Grants permeate the public service sector but are seldom addressed in the literature on public administration education. This thesis paper fills this gap by examining the correspondence between grant-related course descriptions and the core competencies and skills measured by the Grant Professional Certification Institute. A review of the professional literature highlights the importance of intrapersonal and interorganizational knowledge to grant professional competencies and skills. Content analysis of a sample of course descriptions (n = 73) is performed to elucidate links between courses and the core competencies and skills of the Grant Professional Certification Institute. The results suggest that the descriptions …
Local Manifestation Of Global Heritage: The Role Of Local Communities In The Management Of ‘Somapura Mahavihara’ – A World Heritage Site Of Buddhist Origin In Bangladesh, Pushpita Eshika
Student Theses and Dissertations
Somapura Mahavihara, an 8th-century Buddhist monastery in Bangladesh, is a world heritage site. Measuring 22 hectares, the layout of the monastery is quadrangular shaped, reaching a height of approximately eighty feet above ground level. Physically this monastery provides an excellent example of the workmanship and design principles of the Pala Dynasty of 8th-century Bengal. The monastery’s architectural elements have been the center of academic studies on architecture, building morphology, ornamentation, and archeological excavation of this monastery. Yet significant research is still needed regarding the heritage dialogue between this ancient monastery and its local non-Buddhist population. Buddhism disappeared from Bengal in …
Breastfeeding Practices In The Midsouth: Exploring Husbands’ Experiences, Thurel James George
Breastfeeding Practices In The Midsouth: Exploring Husbands’ Experiences, Thurel James George
Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines husbands’ experiences and the role they play in breastfeeding families. The vast majority of research on this topic focuses solely on the mother’s viewpoint and experience. Through in-depth interviews with eight white males residing in the Midsouth, the lived experiences of husbands within the family context and the ways in which they are active participants in parenting decisions and practices are explored. Previous research indicates that breastfeeding initiation and duration can be contingent upon the husband’s approval. This study supported previous research by identifying three themes that highlighted the participants’ breastfeeding experience. The themes identified were the …
Effective Standards-Based Grading Protocol In High School Chemistry, Matthew Jon Balcom
Effective Standards-Based Grading Protocol In High School Chemistry, Matthew Jon Balcom
Student Theses and Dissertations
The American school system is funded, operated, and evaluated based on student academic achievement data that is generated by various assessment tools and grading practices. The most traditional grading practice, norm-referenced grading, assesses student academic achievement on a 100-point scale that is further broken into categorical levels (A-F) of proficiency. With the implementation of such a grading protocol, student performance is compared to their peers rather than to a student’s individualized academic growth. The purpose of this research case study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a norm-referenced grading protocol compared to a standards-based protocol. The specific variables compared between …
