The Perspectives Of Recovered Drug Addicts On The Causes Of Addictions And The Stigma Surrounding Addicts In The Uae, Maha Salim Saif Alketbi, Fakir Al-Gharaibeh
Information Sciences Letters
This study aims to identify the causes of drug use and the forms of social stigma surrounding drug addiction from the point of view of recovered drug addicts. Adopting a descriptive approach, the researchers based their conclusions on the results of a questionnaire that was responded to by 200 recovered drug addicts who have attended rehabilitation centres in the Sharjah. The study revealed that that main reasons for drug use were peer influence, followed by curiosity and the desire to experiment with drugs. Meanwhile, the majority of the respondents (approximately 44.0%) reported that they first used drugs due to peer …

Preschool Education And Its Impact On The Scientific And Research Potential Of Rising Schoolchildren: In Favor Or Against?, Aliya Mambetalina, Aigul Karkulova, Marina Lebedeva, Lilya Sabirova
Information Sciences Letters
This study examines the correlation between preschool education and the development of scientific thinking in rising schoolchildren. The research involved testing 84 first graders aged 6.5-8 years in two schools in Kazakhstan. The results showed that 52% of the children who attended kindergarten regularly had a high level of scientific thinking, while those with poor scientific skills had less than 20% of kindergarten attendance. The study confirms the interdependence between kindergarten attendance and research potential development. These findings can inform the preparation of rising schoolchildren for scientific activities and further research on preschool educations impact on self- realization in other …
The Sharing Economy: Understanding The Affordances Of And Barriers To The Use Of Digital Platforms, Phaswana Malatjie, Lisa F. Seymour
The Sharing Economy: Understanding The Affordances Of And Barriers To The Use Of Digital Platforms, Phaswana Malatjie, Lisa F. Seymour
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
Studies exploring sharing economy services such as automotive, house-sharing, and bike rentals have predicted that these services will add billions of dollars to the global economy by 2025. Sharing economy services could reduce unemployment in Africa. Hence, there is a need to understand the affordance and the barriers to sharing economy platforms. This paper presents a literature review that helps answer the question: What are the affordances of and barriers to the use of sharing platforms? A literature review following a synthesis approach, reveals gaps around the sharing economy services relating to load-shedding, regulations and social exclusion. Potential future directions …

The Impact Of Digital Transformation On Institutional Growth. A Case Of Zimbabwean Universities, Vusumuzi Maphosa
African Conference on Information Systems and Technology
The pressure for institutions to digitally transform has been building, and COVID-19 accelerated the transition in developing countries. The study evaluated the impact of digital transformation on Zimbabwean universities. The Microsoft digital transformation framework guided the study. Thematic analysis was used to extract meaning and generate themes from qualitative data from university ICT Directors. Results show that digital transformation positively impacted institutional growth and efficiency. Most universities invest in digital technology to increase service reliability and availability. Digital transformation teams were bolstered to support student processes and create personalised learning journeys. The digital transformation led to the adoption of several …

Findings From Seven Years Of Child Welfare Workforce Interventions, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)
Other QIC-WD Products
The Quality Improvement Center for WorkforceDevelopment (QIC-WD) operated for seven years and worked with 57 distinct public and tribal child welfare jurisdictions to address workforce issues. We used agency data, an evidence-based management approach, and were supported by site teams that included human resources (HR) and child welfare professionals.
We engaged in in-depth, multi-year projects in eight of the sites, and highlights from those experiences are featured in this short video. A consistent approach to implementation was applied and rigorous evaluation methods were used in those workforce intervention sites, with the goals of improving worker performance, well-being, and retention. Interventions …
Endogenous Preferences: A Challenge To Constitutional Political Economy's Normative Foundation?, Malte Dold
Endogenous Preferences: A Challenge To Constitutional Political Economy's Normative Foundation?, Malte Dold
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
This paper starts with the observation from behavioral economics that preferences are endogenous, i.e., they are unstable, context-dependent, and open to processes of adaptation. It then asks whether welfare analysis and normative economics are still possible in a world populated by people with endogenous preferences. In particular, it looks at recent proposals by Viktor Vanberg and Carl Christian von Weizsacker. In highlighting an institutional perspective, both can be seen as proponents of modern ordoliberalism and both claim that their approaches can deal with the issue of endogenous preferences in a more coherent way than approaches that remain within the mind …

What Are The Causes And Remedies Of Wrongful Convictions?, Audree Alick
What Are The Causes And Remedies Of Wrongful Convictions?, Audree Alick
The Mid-Southern Journal of Criminal Justice
Wrongful convictions, also known as miscarriages of justice, are very common in the criminal justice system today. With the first known wrongful conviction in 1872, to the most recent in 2023, researchers have similarly identified three causes of wrongful convictions: false confessions, eyewitness errors, and investigative misconduct. Wrongful convictions can cause many physical and mental effects on post-exonerees and currently incarcerated individuals, including but not limited to, clinical anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Analyses of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) have proven instrumental in cases of wrongful convictions. Each exoneree should have access to the DNA database to test against the DNA evidence …
The Effects Of Sales Surprise On Inventory Turnover: An Empirical Study, Muhammad Yousaf, Bruce Dehning
The Effects Of Sales Surprise On Inventory Turnover: An Empirical Study, Muhammad Yousaf, Bruce Dehning
Accounting Faculty Articles and Research
Sales surprise (SS) is a significant factor in a firm’s inventory turnover (ITO). In order to estimate SS, it is necessary to select an appropriate approach of sales forecasting. The current study’s main purpose is to examine the effects of SS on ITO. The data was gained from the Albertina database from 2017 to 2021, for two sectors: manufacturing and construction. The Czech firms’ panel data was used to estimate sales forecasts by four different methods: (i) sales linear forecast (SLF), (ii) sales change (SCH), (iii) sales growth (SG), and (iv) sales forecast random walk (SRW). The two most accurate …
Methodological And Practical Considerations For Cross-Cultural Focus Groups On Sensitive Topics Within Criminal Justice And Criminology, Hillary Mellinger, Belén Lowrey-Kinberg, Maya Pagni Barak
Methodological And Practical Considerations For Cross-Cultural Focus Groups On Sensitive Topics Within Criminal Justice And Criminology, Hillary Mellinger, Belén Lowrey-Kinberg, Maya Pagni Barak
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
Cross-cultural focus groups offer several advantages over other qualitative methods, particularly when the research goal is to better understand individual and collective perceptions, opinions, or conceptualizations of issues salient to marginalized groups. However, cross-cultural focus groups also pose several unique challenges despite their advantages. Therefore, more scholarly attention needs to address how to overcome these challenges. In this article, we tackle three issues related to cross-cultural focus groups: (1) defining homogenous regarding focus group formation; (2) incorporating intersectionality into cross-cultural focus groups while maintaining homogeneity in crucial aspects of participants’ identities; and (3) overcoming unexpected practical challenges that may appear …
Blood On The Walls: The Influence Of Place Management On Jail And Prison Victimization, Victor J. St. John
Blood On The Walls: The Influence Of Place Management On Jail And Prison Victimization, Victor J. St. John
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
This study examines the influence of place management on victimization within jail and prison settings. The author conducts content and thematic analysis of narratives deriving from 87 individuals who were formerly incarcerated in Newark, New Jersey, and Cleveland, Ohio. Qualitative findings illustrate that place management may set the stage for victimization by exposing persons in custody to coercive interactions, inadequately surveilled places, deplorable physical conditions, and limited access to quality health services. Such treatment fosters poor relationships among occupants within the correctional setting. I conclude that mismanaged prisons and jails influence the perpetuation of violent victimization. Correctional administrations may foster …

When Words Weave Wings: Just Beyond The Bars, Barbara Bethea
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
Narrative and storytelling creates a formidable foundation for individuals to convey their lived experiences. Utilizing indigenous arts-based research (ABR), poetics as an inquiring and exploratory tool, and an ABR interviewing technique called poetic emergence by the researcher, this study asked two essential questions: What are the lived experiences of individuals in and outside of carceral states? Will these experiences reflect certain aspects of an individual’s life journey? The purpose of this study was to explore the embodied voices and lived experiences of adult Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), diagnosed with mental health issues who were formerly incarcerated (n=3) …

Ethnic Newspaper Industry In Pakistan And Impacts Of Corporate Ownership, Shafiq Ahmad Kamboh, Muhammad Ittefaq, Awais Hamed
School of Communication Studies - Faculty Scholarship
During the Indian independence movement, the Urdu-language ethnic newspapers played a significant role in instigating resistance against colonial authorities within local communities. However, later on, Urdu journalism underwent a transformation, shifting from the ‘advocate-journalist’ model to one dominated by corporate ownership in Pakistan. These commercial agents have faced criticism for using journalism as a shield for their other businesses, yet their presence has profoundly impacted current newspaper practices in various ways. Our case study of the Daily Express reveals that this newspaper, by implementing innovative journalism, technological advancements and efficient management practices, has influenced both preceding and subsequent Urdu dailies, …

Pilot Study: An Exploration Of Medication Assisted-Treatment (Mat) For Indigenous Americans Within Tribal Healing To Wellness Courts, Fanni Farago, Lindsay Smith, Violette Cloud, Michael Gordon, Faye Taxman
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
Considering the opioid epidemic’s adverse and disproportionate consequences on Indigenous American communities across the nation, United States federal agencies (i.e., Indian Health Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy) and Tribal nations are urgently calling for more substance use treatment and prevention efforts. Problem-solving courts (PSCs) are a well-known innovation for treating individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) and those who have committed non-violent offenses. However, very little is known about these courts in indigenous communities and how they address substance use disorders. Drawing on a small sample of court coordinators …
Eroticization Of The Body, Reflexivity, And Qualitative Methodology In Criminology: An Omerta, Catherine Montgamny Grenier
Eroticization Of The Body, Reflexivity, And Qualitative Methodology In Criminology: An Omerta, Catherine Montgamny Grenier
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
This article reflects upon the notion of reflexivity in qualitative methodology, both generally and specifically within the field of criminology. This reflection stems from completing my pre-field research in Costa Rica, which I undertook while completing my doctoral thesis regarding the sexuality of solo female travelers. Based on a sexual assault I experienced during this pre-field research, I critically discuss the notion of reflexivity in cases where the security of researchers is undermined by the relations of power that exist between gatekeepers and participants as a result of gender identity and the eroticization of the body. This article specifically questions …

Actionable Motivational Interviewing: Gendered Perceptions Of Probation Officer-Client Relationships, C.J. Appleton, Lindsay Smith, Danielle S. Rudes
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
Prior research purports that probation officers (POs) view the differences between women and men clients as emotional, with women being more "in-touch" with their emotions and "self-aware" of their issues (Welsh, 2019). Since probation client satisfaction links to relationships with POs (DeLude et al., 2012), it is also important to examine clients' perceptions of POs using a gendered lens that considers the potential variations in women and men clients' views of officers. This study uses 15 semi-structured interviews with women and men clients in one Northwestern probation agency. We examine clients' perceptions of the officer-client relationship, finding that clients desire …

Cognitive Lesson From Linguistics To Humanities, Sourour Hachicha
Cognitive Lesson From Linguistics To Humanities, Sourour Hachicha
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
In this paper we provide a synthetic reading of the reality of what we might call Arabic linguistics. We focus on the characteristics of the psycholinguistic lesson with its generative and cognitive parts. This lesson has yielded cognitive and methodological results that-in our estimation-have enabled it to serve as a link from which Arab social and human sciences cross into the cognitive paradigm as a universal scientific project. We're dealing with some prominent instances in which research is intersected between cognitive linguistics and humanities such as the conceptual metaphor theory. We adopt the Lakoff model of using the principles of …

Learning From User Interactions And Providing Guidance In Visual Data Analysis, Shayan Monadjemi
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
We are now able to collect data from most aspects of our lives on Earth and beyond. The abundance of data, however, is not equivalent to an abundance of actionable knowledge. The data needs to be effectively analyzed and transformed into knowledge. Visual analytics, as a scientific discipline, aims to study how humans and computers unify their respective strengths to reason about large amounts of data effectively. With recent advances in artificial intelligence, the role of computers in this symbiosis has evolved, creating new research frontiers to understand how we can create human-computer partnerships for visual data analysis. Furthermore, given …

Service Dogs: A Scoping Review Of Interdisciplinary Research, K. Lynn Pierce, Nancy A. Dreschel
Service Dogs: A Scoping Review Of Interdisciplinary Research, K. Lynn Pierce, Nancy A. Dreschel
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Despite a long history of service dogs (SDs) being paired with human partners as a systematic intervention and increasing numbers of and roles for SDs, there remains a lack of empirical knowledge and professional guidance regarding the implementation of SDs into treatment plans for individuals with disabilities. The purpose of this scoping review was to review the peer-reviewed literature specific to SDs and their handlers, to identify successful search term strategies, and to determine in what disciplines research is being conducted. Terminology used in referring to service dogs continues to be a challenge. Through a series of preliminary searches, search …

Is Nietzscheanism An Extension Of Kant’S Moral Philosophy? A Nietzschean-Kantian Dialectic For Morality, Sami Shaheen
Is Nietzscheanism An Extension Of Kant’S Moral Philosophy? A Nietzschean-Kantian Dialectic For Morality, Sami Shaheen
The Undergraduate Research Journal
In contrast to mainstream philosophy, this paper argues that Nietzsche’s philosophy allies itself with Kantian thought despite his explicit resentment towards Kant’s emphasis on metaphysical interpretations of morals. Although Nietzsche’s criticisms towards Kantian philosophy are motivated by his attempts to originally as well as creatively distinguish his thought towards morality from Kant’s metaphysical assertions, it could be argued that Nietzsche’s fear from the advent of nihilism requires a transcendentalist framework to regain value for existentialist concerns. The first section of this paper will argue that Nietzsche’s claims against Kant are nothing more than a broader concealment of Nietzsche’s admiration for …
