Introduction For Tqr Special Issue: “International Scholarship For Qualitative Theory, Methods, And Analysis”, Elizabeth M. Pope, António Pedro Costa

The Qualitative Report

The field of qualitative research is robust and nuanced. While there are foundational standards to which all researchers hold, many intricacies regarding theory, methods, and analysis are influenced by differing training and expectations. These latter components are themselves often influenced by the norms of culture and geographic location. Researchers can learn much from international inquiry. In this introduction to the special issue of The Qualitative Report, “International Scholarship for Qualitative Theory, Methods, and Analysis,” we briefly consider the benefits and challenges that come from international scholarship. We then introduce the articles in the issue and their connection with the …

“Social Workers By Day And Terrorists By Night?” Wounded Healers, Restorative Justice, And Ex-Prisoner Reentry, Allely Albert Oct 2023

“Social Workers By Day And Terrorists By Night?” Wounded Healers, Restorative Justice, And Ex-Prisoner Reentry, Allely Albert

Articles

Common to many post-conflict societies, former political prisoners and combatants in Northern Ireland are often portrayed as security threats rather than as potential contributors to societal peacebuilding processes. This distrust limits their ability to contribute to the transitional landscape and additionally hinders desistance processes during their reentry from prison. Drawing from the work of Maruna, LeBel, and others on “wounded healers,” this article critically examines the restorative justice work of ex-prisoners who have become involved in leadership roles within community based restorative justice. It is argued that such practitioner work can help former combatants overcome many of the challenges typically …

Archaeologies Of Roads, Tuna Kalaycı Oct 2023

Archaeologies Of Roads, Tuna Kalaycı

Digital Press Books

What happens if we think of roads not only as a static archaeological object but as a dynamic and complex phenomenon?

Inspired by this question, “Archaeologies of Roads” brings together various studies spanning diverse landscapes and epochs. The central premise of the book is to reveal the complexity of the road, be it a modern or an ancient one. The starting point is that the road is not only a container for action but also the action itself; roads are perpetual works in progress, continually shaping and being shaped by the world around them.

Authors contribute with road studies from …

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

In 2011, government institutions began utilizing HCMIS to reduce the manual workload of traditional administrative processes. The adoption of HCMIS in Tanzania is expected to increase efficiency by optimizing data accuracy, reducing costs, and eliminating paperwork. However, payroll losses continue to persist in the public sector. In 2018, the government incurred losses of Tanzania shillings (Tshs) 19.6 billion to 12,697 ghost workers. This study examines the challenges hindering the application of HCMIS in supporting selected human resource management (HRM) functions at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST). This study applied Institutional Theory and Socio-Technical Theory as …

Impact Of Perceived Environmental Restorativeness On Tourists’ Pro-Environmental Behavior: Examining The Mediation Of Place Attachment And The Moderation Of Ecocentrism, Bin Zhou, Luting Wang, Songshan Huang, Qihao Xiong

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Guided by attention restoration theory and stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) theory, we developed an integrated model to investigate the impact of perceived environmental restoration on forest park visitors' pro-environmental behavior through the mediation of place attachment. We further tested the moderating role of eco-centrism to provide theoretical and practical implications for the sustainability of tourism destinations and positive human-nature interactions. Using a sample of 504 visitors to a national forest park in China, our study indicated all three dimensions of environmental restorative perception (compatibility, extent, and away) positively influenced place attachment. Place attachment promoted pro-environmental behavior. Place attachment was an important mediator …

Essential Workers Without Job Protection: Workers’ Power And The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Indonesian Gig Workers, Arif Novianto, Anindya Dessi Wulansari, Yeremias T. Keban, Ari Hernawan

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has not only undermined global health but has also shaken the economy at large. Gig workers in the ride-hailing, goods delivery, and food delivery sectors, which are predicted as future jobs and categorized as essential jobs, are one of the jobs hardest hit by COVID-19. Gig work, currently characterized as piecework and without job security, where the workers depend on daily income, makes it one of the most vulnerable jobs. So when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, their income decreased drastically, and the lack of job protection forced them to live in poverty. This article …

A Case For Humanistic Theory, Salmoli Choudhuri, Moiz Tundawala Sep 2023

A Case For Humanistic Theory, Salmoli Choudhuri, Moiz Tundawala

Articles

This article responds to a debate in Economic & Political Weekly on the state of theory in Indian academia. While earlier interventions focused on the “who” and “how” questions related to the subject and work of theory, a more fundamental question is addressed here: Why theory at all? In our age of permanent crises, the necessity to make a case for theory that can interpret the world rather than change it for the good has arisen due to the dominance of problem-solving and solution-driven approaches adopted by the social sciences.

A Npo's Values And Identity, William B. Calder Sep 2023

A Npo's Values And Identity, William B. Calder

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Values become an organizational “petri dish” that soon establishes the culture of the workplace. This article reinforces the notion that effective leaders know how to leverage NPO values to ensure positive organizational results. Therefore, values provide a useful context for NPO behaviour and how individuals interact and carry out their assigned tasks.

Core beliefs manifest themselves through NPO actions and form the basis of its identity as an organization which permeates everything that it does. Values must be discovered, explained, and put into practice; since they are the basis of initiatives and heighten the further development of an organization’s vision …

Investigating The Potential Benefits Of Standards-Based Grading Practices At Urban Secondary Schools In Southern Utah: A Qualitative Study, April Larsen Sep 2023

Investigating The Potential Benefits Of Standards-Based Grading Practices At Urban Secondary Schools In Southern Utah: A Qualitative Study, April Larsen

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Letter grades are often inflated or lowered based on non-learning aspects, and students tend to focus on earning a particular grade rather than on mastering academic content and skills. The problem is that the letter grade method that has been used for many decades in education may not be the best way to determine or report student achievement. Gaps in the literature exist regarding comparisons between letter grades and standards-based grades in terms of increasing student achievement and reporting student learning. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to determine whether one grading method is more effective than the …
