Roots To Reconciliation: Understanding Factors Influencing Violent Extremism And Rehabilitation As Imperatives, Sofia Liberti

Global Studies Senior Capstone

Islamic religion and culture are often misunderstood, misrepresented, and consequently most vilified in the world, despite comprising well over a fifth of the world population. This paper attempts to discern Islam's view on violence/non-violence, the factors that lead to religious extremism, and what countering violent extremist movements and rehabilitation look like. While it is important to recognize that this religion/faith/worldview is not understood in the same way or prioritized to the same degree by each and every Muslim, this paper hopes to become a resource for de-bunking the misguided beliefs about Islam in today's media linking ideas such as terrorism …

Concluding Athletic Careers: Post-Athletic Transitions In The Atlantic Coast Conference, Eric Sabin, Sarah Stokowski, Chris Corr, Brennan K. Berg, Michael Hutchinson

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Due to the pervasiveness of athletic role engulfment and a salient athletic identity, collegiate athletes often experience difficulties upon conclusion of their competitive athletic career. Such engulfment and fixed athletic identity are detrimental to an athlete’s post-athletic transition. Given the role of athletic department institutional members (e.g., administrators, coaches, staff) in the formative development of collegiate athletes’ lives, athletic departments occupy an integral position to assist athletes in their post-athletic transition. To examine the practices currently implemented among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletic departments relative to holistic athlete development, semi-structured interviews were conducted with institutional members at nine ( …

“Stamping Out Segregation In Kansas”: Jim Crow Practices And The Postwar Black Freedom Struggle, Brent M. S. Campney

History Faculty Publications

This study examines Jim Crow practices and the Black Freedom Struggle in Kansas between 1945 and 1960, focusing at the state level. It proceeds in three sections. First, it examines Jim Crow in housing, employment, schools, public accommodations, and sundown towns. Second, it addresses the enforcement of these practices through mob violence and, to a greater degree, police violence. Third, it investigates the activism of Black Kansans who were, irrespective of age, gender, or class, determined to destroy Jim Crow through public protests, legal strategies, and physical self-defense, even if they represented considerable ideological, methodological, and strategic diversity. Eco-Necrotourism And Public Land Management: Last Chance Tourism, Ecological Grief, And The World’S Disappearing Natural Wonders, Robin Kundis Craig, Katrina F. Kuh

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Last Chance Tourism. 500 Places to See Before They Disappear. 100 Places to Go Before They Disappear. As these (real) book titles attest, climate change, often in combination with loss of biodiversity, has created a new kind of ecotourism, which we term eco-necrotourism--the desire to see natural wonders and rare species before they are lost or transformed forever. As a scholarly topic, eco-necrotourism is a small facet of an emerging necessity for climate change law and policy: the need for planners, managers, lawmakers, and policy writers to consider human psychological responses to climate change and its impacts. However, those responses …

From "Our Poor" To "Personal Responsibility": Changing Welfare Rhetoric In Political Party Platforms Of The Carolinas And The Nation, 1950-2005, Felicity N. Ropp

Senior Theses

In this thesis, I track political rhetoric surrounding poverty and welfare from 1950-2005. I first provide thorough context on the history of welfare policy in the United States and the way these issues were framed by politicians leading up to the period my data covers. My analysis centers on 108 political party platforms from the national Republican and Democratic parties and from state parties in North and South Carolina, ranging from 1950 to 2005 (31 of which I located in archives and manually digitized for the first time ever). I explain the significance of party platforms and review the literature …

OBJECTIVE: To explore how patients, community-based perinatal support professionals, and health system clinicians and staff perceived facilitators and barriers to implementation of a randomized clinical trial (RCT) designed to optimize Black maternal heart health.

METHODS: This article describes the formative work that we believed needed to occur before the start of the Change of H.E.A.R.T (Here for Equity, Advocacy, Reflection and Transformation) RCT. We used a qualitative, descriptive design and community-based, participatory approach, the latter of which allowed our team to intentionally focus on avoiding harm and equalizing power dynamics throughout the research process. Data were collected between November 2021 …

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background: Palliative care (PC) can reduce symptom distress and improve quality of life for patients and their families experiencing life-threatening illness. While the need for PC in Kenya is high, PC service delivery and research is limited. Qualitative research is needed to explore potential areas for PC research and support needed to enable that research. This insight is critical for informing a national PC research agenda and mobilizing limited resources for conducting rigorous PC research in Kenya.

Objectives: To explore perceptions of priority areas for PC research and support needed to facilitate rigorous research from the perspective of Kenyan PC …

Campus Building, Shilo Virginia Previti, Grant Mcmillan, Samuel Amendolar

Digital Press Books

This book celebrates Merrifield Hall on the campus of the University of North Dakota. This century-old building is now enduring a radical renovation designed to keep it relevant for the next generation of students on the UND campus.

The editors’ goal with this book was both to respect Merrifield Hall’s past and look forward to its now in-process future. It is our hope that this book will offer a space of thoughts, memories, fragments, criticisms, and jokes for all those who have walked the halls of this building and for all those who may one day dance—intellectually and materially—its halls, …

Adults' Subjective Experiences Of Exploitation In South Africa, Fatiema Benjamin, Rachel Chinyakata Dr, Edna Grace Rich Professor, Erica Koegler Professor, Nicolette Vanessa Roman Professor

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The exploitation of people in the environments in which they live and work continues to be a challenge globally despite efforts by stakeholders at national and international levels to bring this to a halt. Exploitation has both short-term and long-term impacts on the lives of the survivors. Attention should be given to preventing new incidents and addressing ongoing exploitation. However, there is a lack of research that focuses on the subjective experiences of different forms of exploitation within the Western Cape, South Africa. Therefore, this paper explores individuals’ experiences of being exploited, focusing on the types of exploitative situations participants …

Tip Your Hat To Your New Teammate, Gayle O'Keefe, Micah Minarik Oct 2023

Tip Your Hat To Your New Teammate, Gayle O'Keefe, Micah Minarik

Business: Faculty Presentations

As the evolution of human-AI teams (HATs) progresses, it will cause a paradigm shift of previously accepted group dynamic and social exchange principles. Though the broad context of HAT development encompasses three dimensions: job displacement, job augmentation, and job creation, we focus on job augmentation, where AI (Artificial Intelligence) and humans will work best in collaboration. We investigate the impact on theory and implications to practice as the unique challenges and opportunities presented by these new collaborative interactions and exchange dynamics arise.

The Cognitive And Affective Components Of Organizational Identification, Brian O'Neill Oct 2023

The Cognitive And Affective Components Of Organizational Identification, Brian O'Neill

Business: Faculty Presentations

Extant literature has linked organizational identification (OID) to many vital organizational constructs and outcomes, such as job satisfaction, job involvement, work engagement, organizational affective commitment, organizational-based self-esteem, cooperation, creativity, extra-role and organizational citizenship behavior, work effort, intention to stay, decreased turnover intentions, and job performance. However, despite the identified benefits of organizational identification, a growing body of research has noted its dark side. For example, OID has been linked to identity lies, negative emotions, and unethical proorganizational behavior. At the same time, there is limited research examining the separate influences of the cognitive and affective components of organizational identification on …

The Unsung Heroes For Intercollegiate Athletics: Examining The Dialogic Principles Of Communication In Community College Athletic Departments, Matthew Alan Stilwell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore community college athletic departments and how they connect and facilitate messages to their stakeholders. With limited resources, it’s important to understand how the athletic departments are applying best strategies and principles of relational management. Therefore, the goal and importance of this project was to explore how a mass communication tool in Twitter and how it is used in community college athletics, an area that is not a focal point in either collegiate athletics or sport communication scholarship. Using Kent and Taylor’s (1998) dialogic principles of communication as a guide for this project, …

Designing Programs To Prepare Future Faculty For Academic Careers: Insights From A Longitudinal Case Study Of A Multidisciplinary Cohort-Based Program Model For Doctoral Students, Laura A. Lukes, Lamis M. Ibrahim, Laurence Bray

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Many universities offer some version of centrally offered professional development opportunities for graduate students seeking academic careers. Less is known about what impact these programs have on student career preparation and success and which design elements are most beneficial to each learner (Diggs et al., 2017; Schram et al., 2017). This article reports on a mixed methods decadal review (2011–2021) of one large, research-intensive institution’s multidisciplinary cohort-based year-long program, Preparing for Academic Careers, for graduate students near the end of their doctoral or master’s of fine arts (MFA) degree. Results from a systematic employment status search using publicly available records …

Writing Communities To (Re-)Engage Faculty: The U See I Write Initiative, Ilona S. Yim, Nina Bandelj, Olga V. Razorenova, Peiyi Wang

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on university faculty, unduly those from underrepresented groups, causing many faculty to disengage. Writing communities represent a promising tool to (re-)engage faculty and build an inclusive climate. As part of U See I Write, a faculty development initiative at the University of California, Irvine, we convened a series of monthly writing retreats between March and June of 2021, with between-retreat weekly writing sessions in smaller groups and an expectation to write daily for at least 30 minutes. In a diverse cohort of 34 faculty writers, program participation resulted in a significant increase in …

Racial Bias, Accomplice Liability, And The Felony Murder Rule: A National Empirical Study, G. Ben Cohen, Justin D. Levinson, Koichi Hioki Oct 2023

Racial Bias, Accomplice Liability, And The Felony Murder Rule: A National Empirical Study, G. Ben Cohen, Justin D. Levinson, Koichi Hioki

Denver Law Review

Two long criticized prosecutorial tools—the felony murder rule and the accomplice liability doctrine—play an outsized role in the operation of American homicide law. Though each of these tools have separately faced intense criticism for their resistance to the supposedly foundational principles of moral culpability and individual responsibility, their legacy is also defined by the way they function symbiotically and specifically to heighten racialized punishment. This Article addresses the weighty combined reach of the accomplice liability doctrine and felony murder rule, and proposes that racial bias has fueled the operation and survival of these tools. Specifically, it suggests that implicit racial …

Sociology: Faculty Publications

This interview with Doris H. Gray, author of Leaving the Shadow of Pain: A Cross-cultural Exploration of Truth, Trauma, Reconciliation, and Healing, explores the impact of political trauma across time, and the strategies for healing and justice. The conversation with Gray focuses on the ways in which her own experiences, as the child of a traumatized German Jew, intersect with those of formerly persecuted and incarcerated Tunisian women before and after the Arab Spring. What are the possibilities and limitations of restorative justice for those haunted by history?
