Arousing “Arts Of Making” In Design: Cultivating Growing Material Societal Meanings For Sustainable Transitions, Ye Yang, Valentina Rognoli
Arousing “Arts Of Making” In Design: Cultivating Growing Material Societal Meanings For Sustainable Transitions, Ye Yang, Valentina Rognoli
IASDR Conference Series
Under the industrial mass production of the 20th century, “making” is controllable and directed by “thinking” in artifact design activities, which formalizes the dominant pattern of “reactive making”, meaning “making following thinking”. The initiative of “making” has been continually weakened and overlooked. Meanwhile, properties of the physical material are defined by the disciplines of Science and Engineering, acting as the “tags” or “surface textures” in CAD for designers to select after the conceptualizing process in design practices. We found tons of nameless and meaningless materials have been surged forth in an uncontrolled way, which has grown a cultural and societal …

Thirdly, this article analyzes …
A Time-Based Approach For The Social Spatialization Strategies In Retail Design, Yuemei Ma
A Time-Based Approach For The Social Spatialization Strategies In Retail Design, Yuemei Ma
IASDR Conference Series
In the context of the developing Smart City, media revolution has changed user’s behavior in the allocation of time and space, their perception turns to hybrid in real and virtual space. Digital technology changed their shopping activities and experiences in personal and social environments. As retail activities become more accessible at any time and location, and as omni-channel retailing disrupts retail stores' monopoly on shopping activities, brick-and-mortar retailers face to the threat of online shopping and must transform in this context. Within the theory of urbanism, the concept of chrono-urbanism is proposed as a critical step to question in depth …
‘Becommoning': A Design-Framework For The Initiation Of New Commons, Zsuzsanna Tomor, Martijn De Waal
‘Becommoning': A Design-Framework For The Initiation Of New Commons, Zsuzsanna Tomor, Martijn De Waal
IASDR Conference Series
This article explores the establishment of new commons initiatives from an integrated design perspective. Such a deeper understanding of the initial phase of becoming a commons -i.e. becommoning- and its design is crucial as members embark on a laborious, time-consuming and uncertain process in which they need to make critical design choices for their future commons. The design perspective is brought forward by the collective creation through which group values are explicated, the communal resource and its governance take shape and conditions are forged for the commons to emerge. So, the study presents the ‘becommoning’ framework as a first exploration …

As we move towards a regenerative paradigm for crafts, with new objectives, methods, and practices, questions arise regarding the aesthetics of these emerging forms. To address this issue, the main author developed a module aimed at exploring furniture design at the intersection of regenerative materials, structures, and aesthetics in greater depth. In this context, five cases have been selected to frame the quintessential characteristics of these new raw aesthetics. These case studies showcase varying approaches, with some generating new aesthetic qualities by introducing novel processes, while others embrace a strictly analogue approach to highlight literal aesthetics. The resulting aesthetics have been categorised …

How Might We Design Alternative Worldviews? Assessing A Design Education Program For Business Professionals, Tomohide Mizuuchi, Daijiro Mizuno, Yasuhiro Yamasaki, Mizuki Tajima, Masafumi Kawachi
IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, there has been a need for design that contributes to "futuring" as Tony Fry points out. The emergence of educational programs that promote futuring, such as transition design seminars at Carnegie Mellon University, is beginning to be observed globally. Yet their business applications have not been fully designed in many cases, and effective design education on defuturing/futuring is urgently needed. Keeping the status quo while challenging the global environmental crisis has contradictions and limitations. To drive business, it is imperative to transition the underlying worldview itself. For such a transition to succeed, business professionals with the necessary …
Social Innovation Through Regenerative Perspectives: A Theoretical Approach On Gender-Based Violence System, Raquel Lima
Social Innovation Through Regenerative Perspectives: A Theoretical Approach On Gender-Based Violence System, Raquel Lima
IASDR Conference Series
Regenerative theories are used in human and non-human dynamics in a sustainable perspective; however, their potential can flourish new applications to deal with other social challenges. This article explores a theoretical approach to possible uses of regenerative theories applied to the gender-based violence (GBV) system and its relevance in social innovation. The answers in GVB are conducted by the government and civil society institutions that collectively act on the field. Despite the efforts to end violence against women, there is a long road to deconstructing inequalities, and social and cultural structures that evidence and contribute to maintaining the phenomenon. Since …
Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim
Is Gift A Token Of Gratitude Or An Imposition Of Identity? Facilitating Positive Consequences Of Gift-Giving With Receiver-Centred Design, Houjiang Liu, Miso Kim
IASDR Conference Series
Gifts are more than things; they represent and tie together human relationships. While people often treat it as a token of social interactions, the presentation of a gift could impose an identity that reflects gift-givers’ images of gift-receivers. Because gift-giving is a social behaviour situated in the cultural and economic context, the perceived value of gifts is greatly affected by the social norms and the consumer market, in which design plays an important role. In this paper, we first discuss how commodities can be transformed into gifts and what kinds of design activities influence such transformations. We found that most …
Design Interventions Are Not Received Equally: Ssi And Mediated Influences In Decision-Making, Meichun Liu, Tsailu Liu
Design Interventions Are Not Received Equally: Ssi And Mediated Influences In Decision-Making, Meichun Liu, Tsailu Liu
IASDR Conference Series
Many artifacts are designed with the purpose of intervening in human behaviour and influencing decisions. However, their persuasive effect can depend on the users and circumstances. Our study focuses on personal and situational factors in people’s decision-making under technology-mediated social influence, or “mediated influence.” We displayed the information of the majority decisions to provide references when participants performed tasks. The statistical results show that people were affected by the mediated influence, which accelerates the process of consensus formation among community members. However, those scoring low on susceptibility to social influence (SSI) generally regarded the references as impeding their decision-making, except …

Giahs Metaverse: Innovative Digital Transformation Of Agricultural Heritage, Chiju Chao, Yin Li, Yu Chen, Qirui Wang, Yidan Wu, Zhiyong Fu
IASDR Conference Series
Global Important Agriculture Heritage Systems (GIAHS) is a form of heritage published by FAO that integrates cultural, ecological, economic, and agricultural factors. Formerly, the digital transformation of GIAHS mainly concerned object models or data storage. A significant part of its intangible heritage, such as cultural stories and traditional skills, was not adequately preserved digitally. The Metaverse is now offering an innovative approach which can build interactive systems and provide powerful possibilities for the digital transformation of the GIAHS. We, therefore, conducted a six-week design workshop in which 10 groups designed the GIAHS Metaverse to summarize this approach's advantages and design …
Improving The Patient-Doctor Relationship To Fight Antimicrobial Resistance Through Data Literacy Promoted By A Women-Centred Participatory Practice, Ginevra Terenghi
Improving The Patient-Doctor Relationship To Fight Antimicrobial Resistance Through Data Literacy Promoted By A Women-Centred Participatory Practice, Ginevra Terenghi
IASDR Conference Series
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the current biggest public health concerns, especially urgent regarding antibiotic consumption caused by urinary tract infections, which affect women the most. Improving diagnosis and prescription help in reducing resistance development. For this reason, data literacy is suggested to enhance individuals' ability to recognize and describe symptoms and promote bottom-up data and information collection. A participatory approach to self-tracking practices, based on data visualization and physicalization, emerged in this direction to facilitate women in defining new methods of self-care valuation, promoting female agency, autonomy and knowledge creation. Based on the findings from the interdisciplinary literature review …
A Systematic Thinking On Evaluation Of Community Service Facilities In The Context Of Design, Mao-En He, Chang Liu
A Systematic Thinking On Evaluation Of Community Service Facilities In The Context Of Design, Mao-En He, Chang Liu
IASDR Conference Series
Community Service Facilities are the basic unit that carries the daily activities of residents. The evaluation of community service facilities is the key to ensuring a balance between the supply of facilities and the needs of residents. Existing studies mainly focus on a specific type of facility from the perspective of an independent discipline. A lack of a holistic understanding leads to several problems, such as the incompatibility of different disciplines' perspectives and the inconsistency between evaluation results and users' needs. Design is being considered and explored as a tool for dealing with systems-level issues. We re-cognized the evaluation problem …

Photoreflexivity: Supporting Reflexivity For Students In Design Education, Marije Ten Brink, Marije Kanis, Bert Bredeweg, Tamara Witschge, Ben Schouten
IASDR Conference Series
This paper describes the development and results of the pedagogical photo-based method PhotoReflexivity. This method is designed to support reflexivity for students in design education, which guides them in better understanding and situating themselves in the outside world. To uncover the value of this method, mixed research methods including iterative prototypes were deployed in real-world learning scenarios with design students. Attitudes, behaviour, and reflexive conversations were analysed, from which design patterns and recommendations were derived. It is argued that PhotoReflexivity fills a gap in design education by aiming for extensive and transformational outcomes associated with reflexivity, which previous research has …

This is followed by an examination of social innovation themes and practices, and the …
Textile Autobiographies: Crafting Shifting Identities With Refugee Communities, Francesco Mazzarella, Seher Mirza
Textile Autobiographies: Crafting Shifting Identities With Refugee Communities, Francesco Mazzarella, Seher Mirza
IASDR Conference Series
With the rising mass displacement of people, rethinking and addressing the needs and aspirations of refugee communities and honouring their diverse cultures is needed. Historically, the textile heritage of minorities has often been subjected to cultural appropriation practices or systematically undervalued and ‘othered’ as ‘non-fashion’. Designers are often ‘parachuted’ into marginalised or disadvantaged communities premised on bringing their own knowledge and expertise to solve other people’s problems. However, there is growing recognition of the need to ‘decolonise’ such dominant approaches in collaborative design practice. Instead of re-enacting dominant power narratives, London-based refugees and asylum seekers were engaged in storytelling sessions …

Aqueous Logics: Towards A Hydro Feminism Approach To Sustainability, Beatrice Maggipinto, Valentina Nisi, Sarah Fox, Nuno Nunes, Tom Ainsworth
IASDR Conference Series
In the popular imagination, sustainability is often synonymous with environmentalism, but it encapsulates much more. While environmentalism and conservation are often a focal point of sustainability efforts, so too are the people who impact the environment through their actions and associated activism. In this paper, we examine the discourse on sustainability, nature conservation and climate change. We focus, in particular, on the relationship between humans and the seas, where three main topics entangle: eco-feminism, ocean conservation and well-being. This paper highlights its implications for research on sustainability, nature conservation and climate change by outlining an aqueous logic — a fluid …
Mapping The Research Landscape Of The Gig Work For Design On Labour Research, Shuhao Ma, Valentina Nisi, John Zimmerman, Nuno Nunes
Mapping The Research Landscape Of The Gig Work For Design On Labour Research, Shuhao Ma, Valentina Nisi, John Zimmerman, Nuno Nunes
IASDR Conference Series
Economic activities are built on several essential factors such as capital, technology, and notably, labour. Despite extensive exploration of economic activities in the last decade, prior design research has overlooked the impact of Design on Labour. Designers play crucial roles as creators of gig platforms, yet research on the intersection between design and gig work is lacking. To bridge this gap, we conducted a literature review using grounded theory methodology to scrutinize the contributions of the HCI community to the gig work and gig economy, with the goal of sparking dialogue on the Design on Labour research. This paper revealed …

“One of the most significant facts of our time is the predominance of organizations. Perhaps this is the most significant. It will take time to fully understand its effects on individuals' thinking and behavior. Only a few of them will not be affected by this conditioning process”. If we read this sentence today, for the first time, without knowing its context, date and source, we would first of all be struck by its timeliness. We could also assume that we are dealing with an extract from a publication in the field of economics or business organization aimed at investigating the …
Developing A Community-Engaged Homemaking Approach To Elicit A Sense Of Belonging In People With Dementia, Alessandro Biamonti, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Lorenzo Fossi
Developing A Community-Engaged Homemaking Approach To Elicit A Sense Of Belonging In People With Dementia, Alessandro Biamonti, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Lorenzo Fossi
IASDR Conference Series
This paper presents a research-action case which explores how homemaking processes and dynamics, enable people with dementia to create and establish a sense of belonging towards the care environment they are living in, after relocating from their home. In particular, home-making practises encompass the involvement of archetypical elements and material possessions in the form of objects owning an intrinsic emotional value, which are capable of enabling habits, conversations and social interactions. Through the presented case study, we want to investigate their role in contributing to homemaking and placemaking practises. The research encompassed semi-structured interviews, observations, and storytelling focus groups with …
The Brand As A Place. For A Model Interpreting Identity In The Digital Age., Francesco E. Guida, Elisa Finesso
The Brand As A Place. For A Model Interpreting Identity In The Digital Age., Francesco E. Guida, Elisa Finesso
IASDR Conference Series
What if the brand is a place? In specialist literature, the brand interacts through a series of tangible and intangible touchpoints with its interlocutors. When we buy items, use services, or come into contact with any expression of a brand, we come into contact with its being. Whether these are points of sale, events, websites, packaging and products, touchpoints help the interlocutor enter the world of the brand and experience it. These elements play an essential role in building a long-term engagement with it. However, in an ever-changing environment where brands must be flexible and agile to remain market relevant, …

Designing Collective Racial Healing Spaces, Angelica Sibrian, Nekita Thomas, Terresa Moses, Lisa Elzey Mercer
Designing Collective Racial Healing Spaces, Angelica Sibrian, Nekita Thomas, Terresa Moses, Lisa Elzey Mercer
IASDR Conference Series
Spaces for collective racial healing within predominantly White institutions are meant to support the path to collective liberation for Black, Indigenous, and students of color. It is imperative that we intentionally create racial healing spaces that support the identities and experiences of students of color on a predominantly White institution. We assert that physical spaces support empowerment and create access to opportunities for students of color through protection, healing, and community. The question that guides this work is, how might people with an agency within institutions of higher learning build sustainable, inclusive, and supportive spaces for and with Black, Indigenous, …

Elderly’S Perceptions Of A Meaningful Interaction With Voice-Based Conversational Agents: Integrate Into Daily Routines, Support Relatedness, But Do Not Hamper Autonomy, Hilal Şahin, Aslı Günay, Gülşen Töre Yargın
IASDR Conference Series
Voice, as one of the most natural means of communication for the elderly given their declining physical and cognitive abilities, has the potential to reduce interaction barriers with newly emerging technologies. In parallel to this, studies focusing on the elderly as a user group have escalated in academia due to events such as the increasing ageing population and global epidemics like COVID-19. However, the focus has been mostly on their declining mental and physical abilities. This paper aims to investigate the hedonic aspects of Voice-based Conversational Agents (VCAs) for the elderly. In this respect, we conducted in-depth interviews with 13 …
Embedded Actors In Design Objects: Reflexivity In Design For Social Innovation, Danwen Ji, Ziqi Li
Embedded Actors In Design Objects: Reflexivity In Design For Social Innovation, Danwen Ji, Ziqi Li
IASDR Conference Series
Designers lead practices to focus on complex social-technical systems, however, most of the time they forget that they should also be embedded in the social structure they intend to change. Recently, researchers have been giving increased attention to “reflexivity” in design, but there has been limited exploration of designers’ long-term engagement within the design object, particularly in community-based social innovation. We utilized the constructivist grounded theory to analyze the reflexive discourse of three practitioners, exploring their understanding of the social structure, their own identities, and the impact of reflexivity on their subsequent design actions. This study represents a preliminary inquiry …

Compass For The Voyage Of Ideation:Unlocking The Stimulation Potential Of Service Design Heuristics, Zihan Zhou, Renke He, Ying Hu, Xing Du, Yiming Bai
IASDR Conference Series
Design heuristics facilitate the generation of innovative solutions by pooling expert knowledge and experience through external stimuli. While heuristic tools have been widely studied in various design domains, most research has focused on evaluating their efficacy in enhancing creativity and usability rather than examining how they stimulate the the process of design. In this study, based on Service Design Heuristic Cards (SDHC), we explored the stimulating effects of design heuristics on the ideation process, filling a relevant research gap. We confirmed the existence of four types of stimulation of heuristic tools, compared the effects of stimuli on different levels of …
Guiding Into The Unknown. A Dialogue Between Design And Yoga For Mindful Design Education, Estelle Berger
Guiding Into The Unknown. A Dialogue Between Design And Yoga For Mindful Design Education, Estelle Berger
IASDR Conference Series
This paper builds on wider research studying designers’ posture, understood as the specific way in which professional activity is invested, given substance, meaning and justification. Awareness on posture is even more important in design teaching and leadership, as individuals take responsibility for guiding others. But, in complex and uncertain environments, knowledge holding has become less important than continuous learning. “Guiding into the unknown” questions the meaning and very possibility of accompanying intimate processes of transformation, far beyond professional training as commonly understood. Outside of content, what emerges in such relationships? In this investigation, yoga is mobilized as a both philosophical …
