Importance Of Sanitation For Stored-Product Pest Management, Georgina Bingham, David W. Hagstrum Dec 2023

Importance Of Sanitation For Stored-Product Pest Management, Georgina Bingham, David W. Hagstrum

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Sanitation is essential for the cost-effective pest management of stored-product insects. The Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act of 1938 led to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tightening regulatory standards, and many local surveys, courses and conferences were organized to prepare the industry for these new regulations. Sanitation removes insects and residual food, which may also provide shelter for insects, with heat treatments and insecticide applications. The number of insects removed by cleaning may be reduced as the number of available hiding places increases. Decreased sanitation negatively affects the efficacy of most other pest management practices, with means of 1.3- …

The Unknown Consequences Of Place-Based Tax Incentives, Michelle D. Layser Dec 2023

The Unknown Consequences Of Place-Based Tax Incentives, Michelle D. Layser

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Nearly thirty years have passed since Prof. Ellen Aprill warned policymakers not to rely on tax incentives to fight urban poverty. At the time, federal and state governments were just beginning to embrace so-called place-based tax incentives, which are used to promote investment in low-income areas. Aprill was skeptical and expressed doubts about their capacity to change business behavior or to benefit low-income residents. Nevertheless, federal and state lawmakers charged forward, introducing new place-based tax incentive programs in the decades that followed. Today, tax incentives are a central part of most place-based policy initiatives. Yet, there is still a lot …

The current study investigates attitudes toward one form of sex for resources: the so-called sugar relationships, which often involve exchanges of resources for sex and/or companionship. The present study examined associations among attitudes toward sugar relationships and relevant variables (e.g., sex, sociosexuality, gender inequality, parasitic exposure) in 69,924 participants across 87 countries. Two self-report measures of Acceptance of Sugar Relationships (ASR) developed for younger companion providers (ASR-YWMS) and older resource providers (ASR-OMWS) were translated into 37 languages. We tested cross-sex and cross-linguistic construct equivalence, cross-cultural invariance in sex differences, and the importance of the hypothetical predictors of ASR. Both measures …

Towards Ethical Artificial Intelligence In Universities: Chatgpt, Culture, And Mental Health Stigmas In Asian Higher Education Post Covid-19, Michael James Day

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

Mental health can be interpreted as a social taboo in Asia, ensuring that students with mental health stigmas (SWMHS) face complex educational journeys that impact their wellbeing. This article provides a conceptual interdisciplinary commentary that illustrates how in Asian higher education (HE) settings, the psychosocial phenomena of face culture, a sociolinguistic blend of high-context power relations, sense-making, and cultural capital, defines human-to-human (HTH) dialogue. It suggests that human-to-computer-interaction (HCI) through artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, could improve university wellbeing strategies in Asia. The article situates AI discussion into the sociolinguistic features of face culture in Thailand and China …

Missing The Point- The Disappointed Hope Of Self- Publishing Authors, Simone Schroff Dec 2023

Missing The Point- The Disappointed Hope Of Self- Publishing Authors, Simone Schroff

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Trade book publishing is characterised by authors with weaker bargaining power than the commercial intermediaries, including publishers and distributors. One key solution representing the empowerment of authors is self-publishing works, thereby cutting out the gatekeeper. However, self-publication has failed to improve the position of authors: their incomes continue to fall across the sector. Using social network analysis as well as industry practices, this article examines UK trade book publishing dynamics. It argues that the reason for the self-publication route’s ‘underperformance’ is structural, explained by a realistic view of the publishing sector and the relationships it entails. The self- publishing author …

The Intersection Of Leader-Follower Trade (Lft) And Leader-Member Exchange (Lmx) In Alleviating Work-Family Conflict (Wfc), Ashlie James

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

In an organizational context, employees are more than mere followers but individuals with multiple roles beyond their employment which interact and influence the way they work. When the demands from work and family life collide, scholars describe this inter-role conflict as work–family conflict (WFC) where the role pressures from work and family are mutually incompatible creating increased feelings of strain and decreased life and job satisfaction which affect their work performance and commitment (Blanch & Aluja, 2012; Hagqvist et al., 2017). Given the importance of having work-life balance, human resource management (HRM) theory argues work flexibility, such as the opportunity …

In recent years, innovative approaches to corporate culture and leadership, such as the concept of "New Work" and its meaning and value-oriented corporate management, are gaining attention in science and organizational practice. Forecasting future obstacles, W.E.B. Du Bois once envisaged color to be the dilemma facing the United States of America (USA) in the 20th Century. Wherein some individuals may disagree with this claim and counter by alleging America has moved towards a post racial society, unremitted racial structuring subsisted in the 20th century and has continued to cast a dark shadow in 21st century American society. The realm of sport is no exception as Black student-athletes comprise approximately half of the football participants at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. Oddly enough, Black head coaches are severely underrepresented at this level. …
