“We Need To Figure Out Who We Are”: Reframing Manhood In An Online Discussion Forum, Tomas Sanjuan Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I explore the potential of online communities in negotiating alternative forms of “doing” masculinity. I focus on the /r/bropill which is hosted on Reddit – home to thousands of active discussion forums called subreddits. I argue that the members of /r/bropill subreddit are attempting to redefine what it means to live your life not only as a man but as a “good man.” Using a purposive sample, I analyzed 24 discussions which totaled 1325 posts (n = 1325). I conducted a qualitative textual analysis of the original posts and comments inspired by grounded theory. My findings reveal …

Two words, spoken by the most powerful man in the world, generated massive media coverage. Around the world, news outlets and people everywhere looked for Washington’s reaction. Words are powerful because of the narrative they …

Why We Can’T Have Nice Things: Equality, Proportionality, And Our Abridged Voting Rights Regime, Michael Latner Oct 2023

Why We Can’T Have Nice Things: Equality, Proportionality, And Our Abridged Voting Rights Regime, Michael Latner

Fordham Law Voting Rights and Democracy Forum

What constraints should the protection of political equality place on the design of electoral systems? With the exception of requiring approximate population equality across a jurisdiction’s districts, the U.S. voting rights regime accepts substantial disproportionality in voting strength. This Article addresses the current Supreme Court’s abandonment of the Second Reconstruction’s “one person, one vote” standard with regard to both racial and partisan gerrymandering, and assesses the role that Congress and political science have played in this transition. This Article argues that an unabridged voting rights regime must recognize a standard of proportional representation derived from the protection of individual political …

Disentangling Work-Family Conflict, Support, And Turnover Intentions – Quanti-Quali Mixed Method Approach, R Belwal, S Belwal, Se Al-Hashemi

Plymouth Business School

The turnover rate of Omani women in the private sector is high and employers face difficulties in retaining women productively in jobs. By assessing work–family conflict (WFC), this study probes the challenges and associated issues facing women in private-sector jobs in Oman. This research took a mixed form of exploratory and descriptive research techniques. A structured questionnaire was administered face to face to secure direct responses from the 466 Omani women in the private sector organizations using quota sampling. The study found that time-based and strain-based work conditions affect the families of women significantly. Married women, particularly those having infants …

Bringing Children Into The Sociology Of Consumption: A Symbolic Consumption Perspective, Belinda Senooane, Johannes Wiid

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

This article explores children’s consumption practices from a sociology of consumption perspective. The aim is to discover whether South African children, in their consumption of clothing, engage in symbolic consumption and to identify the ways in which they do so. Existing studies on children and symbolic consumption have largely excluded African children, hence this study represents an attempt to include their voices in the conceptualisation of childhood consumer behaviour. Data were collected through a survey of 192 children aged 10–14, using a questionnaire developed from the literature on symbolic consumption. The article presents the design and implementation of a quantitative …

Understanding The Factors Influencing Adoption Of Digital Banking In Emerging Markets: The Role Of Perception And Personality Antecedents, Ntswaki Petunia Matlala

Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets

The emergence of digital banking has presented the banking industry with benefits and challenges. Although digital banking services provide customers with increased convenience and accessibility around the clock, many still struggle to grasp their ever-changing nature. To address this, a study was conducted to identify the main factors influencing the adoption of digital banking in South Africa. The study used an e-readiness framework that combined the innovation diffusion theory and trust in technology with the technology readiness index to measure consumers’ adoption of digital banking channels. The researcher applied quantitative methodology to answer the research question. The snowball sample required …

Intimate Partner Violence, Socioeconomic Status, And The Media, Christianna Victoria Page Oct 2023

Intimate Partner Violence, Socioeconomic Status, And The Media, Christianna Victoria Page

Theses and Dissertations

News media’s communication of social issues can create societal pushes for policy change. This is true regarding femicide and violence against women. How news media communicate demographics such as socioeconomic status (SES) of intimate partner femicide (IPF) victims in a digital space is underexplored. This study is a thematic analysis analyzing how digital news articles communicate the SES of IPF victims. The sample for this study was taken from a population of digital news articles about IPF sources from ten major U.S.-based online news sites and analyzed 50 digital articles for news media’s communication of SES of victims. Results from …

Liminal Legality, Social Exclusion, And The Island Community: The Uncertain Futures Of Brazilian Immigrant Youth In Martha’S Vineyard., Bárbara F. De Paula

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project explores the realities of Brazilian undocumented immigrant youth who entered the United States before the age of 18 and have settled in the island community of Martha’s Vineyard located in Massachusetts. This project analyzes the barriers that Brazilian undocumented youth encounter in pursuing their dream futures, in the light of their legal status and the island context. The theoretical frameworks used in the study drew from notions of segmented assimilation and modes of incorporation (Bean, 2011; Patler, 2018a), immigrant social networks (Assis, 2003; Padilla, 2006), liminal legality, (Cebulko, 2014; Menjíver, 2006; Patler, 2018a) citizenship frames, (Friorito, 2019; Patler, …

Canadian “Dreamers”: Access To Post-Secondary Education, Elise Mercier, Sean Rehaag, Francisco Rico-Martinez

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Youth with precarious legal status (PLS) in several provinces are entitled to access primary and secondary education regardless of their immigration status. However, once they graduate from high school their opportunities for post-secondary education are highly constrained. This article sets out an argument for expanding post-secondary educational opportunities for PLS students, drawing on the example of the only existing program in Canada targeting such students: York University’s “Access for Students with Precarious Immigration Status Program.” The article considers possible legal impediments to the establishment of such programs, including offences under Canadian immigration legislation, and argues that charges against post-secondary institutions …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Love is a phenomenon that occurs across the world and affects many aspects of human life, including the choice of, and process of bonding with, a romantic partner. Thus, developing a reliable and valid measure of love experiences is crucial. One of the most popular tools to quantify love is Sternberg’s 45-item Triangular Love Scale (TLS-45), which measures three love components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. However, our literature review reveals that most studies (64%) use a broad variety of shortened versions of the TLS-45. Here, aiming to achieve scientific consensus and improve the reliability, comparability, and generalizability of results across …

The Elusive Motive Requirement In Canada’S Terrorism Offences: Defining And Distinguishing Ideology, Religion, And Politics, Michael Nesbitt, Leah West, Amarnath Amarasingam Oct 2023

The Elusive Motive Requirement In Canada’S Terrorism Offences: Defining And Distinguishing Ideology, Religion, And Politics, Michael Nesbitt, Leah West, Amarnath Amarasingam

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Canada distinguishes “ordinary crime” from terrorism offences primarily by reference to whether an act meets the Criminal Code’s definition of “terrorist activity.” The most confusing and least understood element of terrorist activity is its motive requirement, that being that for a crime to constitute a terrorism offence, the actor must be motivated by politics, religion, or ideology. How do we know when such a motive exists, or even how to define these motivations? How do we differentiate ordinary crime from terrorism if we do not know what ideologies or religions “count” and which do not? Do far-right motivations picked and …

Provincial Constitutions, The Amending Formula, And Unilateral Amendments To The Constitution Of Canada: An Analysis Of Quebec’S Bill 96, Emmett Macfarlane Oct 2023

Provincial Constitutions, The Amending Formula, And Unilateral Amendments To The Constitution Of Canada: An Analysis Of Quebec’S Bill 96, Emmett Macfarlane

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article critically analyzes provincial authority to unilaterally amend the Constitution of Canada. Via an assessment of the purported amendments in Quebec’s Bill 96, which would recognize Quebecers as a nation and French as the only language of the province, the article argues that provinces cannot make direct amendments altering, adding, or repealing provisions of the Constitution of Canada. This argument is reflected in the wording of the various constitutional amending procedures, the historical and contemporary constitutional practice, and the underlying purpose of, and fundamental distinction and complex relationship between, the Constitution of Canada as supreme law and the constitution …

A Gis Workflow For Analyzing Spatiotemporal Variance In Food Pantry Access: A Case Study For Hillsborough County, Florida, Molly J. Darby Oct 2023

A Gis Workflow For Analyzing Spatiotemporal Variance In Food Pantry Access: A Case Study For Hillsborough County, Florida, Molly J. Darby

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Researchers often use geographic information systems (GIS) to measure accessibility to food pantries, but the impact operating hours have on accessibility remains understudied. Unlike grocery stores or healthcare facilities, food pantries have irregular distribution schedules, therefore, measuring geographic accessibility alone potentially creates an inaccurate or inflated representation of access. This study proposes a GIS workflow for analyzing food pantry accessibility over space and time by considering hours of operation and location, allowing researchers to examine when and where access to food assistance is most limited over the span of a typical week. The method was applied to Hillsborough County, Florida …

Reimagining Freshmen Library Orientation At The Forde Library, Usc, Anastasia Mulraine-Campbell, Stacyann Quintero

Journal of Adventist Libraries and Archives

Striving “Beyond Excellence” is the motto of the University of the Southern Caribbean, and the Forde Library strives to embody such by constantly reviewing and upgrading the resources and services offered to their community. One of the main drivers of such a review process in the past three years has been the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many academic libraries to reimagine their service offerings and access points. The Forde Library was no stranger to this, as the pandemic saw a fundamental shift in the delivery mode of Library orientation using technology and conferencing software. This quantitative study focuses on the …

Journal of Maya Heritage

This article presents the results of an accessibility analysis of The Caste War Route (RGC), prior to its commercialization as a community heritage product. The analysis consists of a diagnosis of the resource to establish destination-planning strategies. The accessibility diagnosis goes beyond adapting physical spaces for transit, considering that the resource is accessible to all types of people, including economic, spatial and temporal accessibility, criteria on which the research focuses.

The diagnosis was prepared through a multidisciplinary investigation that collected information from different sectors with qualitative and quantitative tools that combined the recording of data and the opinion of the …

The Riviera Maya has undergone rapid development in the last few decades due to increased demand for tourism, putting pressure on surrounding ecosystems and cultural sites. As demand for tourism shows no signs of decreasing, there is an ever-increasing need for effective management solutions. The town of Puerto Morelos is striving to forward sustainable tourism based on its natural and cultural assets. As a new municipality, it has the chance to shape policy from a relatively blank canvas. This study involved collecting data about the different perspectives of key stakeholders through qualitative interviews and surveys to understand if the views …

Background

- Considerable stigma exists toward persons experiencing homelessness (PEH)—a vulnerable population at greater risk for health disparities.1, 2

- Many healthcare students begin their programs without interacting with PEH and with preconceived notions influenced by societal stigma.

- Interprofessional education programs, such as the Enhancing Services for People Experiencing Homelessness program below, have incorporated experiential learning into curricula to address student biases and develop understanding and compassion.

  • Educating students to understand issues that PEH face can help mitigate healthcare disparities.

- Evaluating the effectiveness of these interprofessional educational experiences requires valid assessment of the attitudes, interest, and confidence …
