"Gawe Kuta Baluwarti Bata Kalawan Kawis"; Contribution Of Local Knowledge To The Expansion Of The Banten Sultanate On The Nusantara Spice Route, Rismawidiawati Rismawidiawati, Wuri Handoko, Roni Tabroni, Abd. Rahman Hamid, Muh. Subair
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
So far, the trade and spice route historiography has focused on social, political, and economic aspects. This discussion is also fragmentarily or is part of another focus. No studies have discussed the relationship between local knowledge practices, spice routes, power networks, and Islamization. However, the spice trade and Islamization are two intersecting events important for their connection with the local culture. This article assumes that there was a local knowledge used as a strategy by the Banten rulers as a response to trade, Islamization, and power networks in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It finds that Sultan Maulana Yusuf’s policy, …

Melacak Pengetahuan Yang Terpinggirkan: Analisis Teori Standpoint Dalam Kebijakan Food Estate Di Kalimantan, Fajar Yudha Sentana, Fristian Hadinata
Multikultura

Unveiling Teachers’ Perception: Cultural Influences On Educators' Decision-Making In High-Stakes Exams, Maya Puspitasari, Muhammad Arifin Pelawi
Jurnal Pendidikan dan Pembelajaran
This study analyses the diverse motives of educators entering the teaching profession and their impact on pedagogical decisions during high-stakes exams. Semi-structured interviews with eight participants (six male and two female teachers) from secondary schools in Kabupaten Bandung, Jawa Barat, Indonesia, lasted up to forty minutes. These interviews aimed to elicit insights into the participants' beliefs on their professional calling. Three key themes emerged from the interviews' thematic analysis: the trajectory of a teacher's personal history, the influential role of degree choice, and the weight of accountability. Furthermore, the findings highlighted how gender identity not only influenced the teachers but …
Marginalizing Colonial Violence At The Beginning Of The 21st Century The Representation Of Colonial Military Expedition To Banten Of 1808 In The National Museum Of Indonesia, Adieyatna Fajri
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The article discusses the narrative of colonial violence attached to the objects displayed in the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta. Taking the colonial military expedition to Banten in 1808 as a case study, this paper analyses the exhibition to show the interplay between museum as a product of colonialism and its focus on regionalism, its role in post-colonial nation-state-formation promoting national identity building, and the complexities of addressing violence. It argues that, as the museum engages with the discourse of coloniality and concurrently emphasizes national identity building, it inadvertently marginalizes the narrative of colonial violence. The findings show that, …

Navigating Complexity Of Serving Displaced Communities: A Study Of Yemeni Community-Based Organizations In Egypt, Alya Mohammed Al-Mahdi
Theses and Dissertations
Forced displacement is a global crisis that poses challenges for nations like Egypt. Despite international NGO support, escalating displaced individuals have overwhelmed existing capacities. Refugee Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) have emerged as a natural response from the communities themselves to bridge the gap between the state and NGOs and the refugee community. However, CBOs in Egypt face challenges that impact their operation and continuity. Through qualitative research, this study aims to explore the experience of the Yemeni CBOs. Through interviews with seven people from six CBOs conducted through field visits and online calls, this research uncovers the dynamics of Yemeni CBOs …

Reading Rent: Interracial Relationships And Racial Hierarchies, Susanna A. Perez-Field
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In examining the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson (1995) and its film adaptation by Chris Columbus (2005), most scholarly work and analyses have focused on the work’s identity as a queer text. I assert that elements of this musical have been overlooked for its depth of racial and class hierarchies. Utilizing sociological theory and interracial relationships, I will examine characters and musical numbers to explore diversity and class positioning.
I will explore Rent for themes of racial, gender, and sexual identities and how they are presented through the friendships and romantic relationships of the eight principal characters (alphabetically): Angel, Benny, …
Homeless Friendly Campus: An Exploratory Case Study Of University Liaisons, Brandy Gros
Homeless Friendly Campus: An Exploratory Case Study Of University Liaisons, Brandy Gros
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study aimed to explore how University Liaisons respond to homelessness on their campus. With new federal and state laws being enacted, little research focuses on the policies, programs, and services at universities. Community Colleges tend to be a more attractive option for homeless youth due to the low cost; however, universities are also seeing an increase in the homeless student population, and more research is needed at the university level. The overarching research question is: How are universities' liaisons with state legislation responding to homelessness? This study used a comparative multiple-case study approach to explore how ULs respond to …

Poetic Meaning And Perspectives On Sport: Introducing Kinesiology Undergraduates To Mysticism, Celene Tehya Balido, Coby Allen Barbar, Mia Isabella Napolitano, Jenner Robert Sapienza
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Mysticism in sport is a unique experience in which someone is engulfed by a feeling of existence both in real time and stopped time as well as entering a realm of unparalleled reality surrounded by mind and spirit (Higgs & Braswell, 2004). Despite the inexplicability of mystic experiences, poetry provides one means of deciphering them. The purpose of this article is to model how sport participants could be engaged in a process of self-reflective inquiry, then self-author scholarship that synthesizes and interprets the results of their self-reflection. During their 2021 Winter Quarter course on perspectives in physical activity, four undergraduate …

Strength Under Pressure: Superwoman Schema (Sws) And Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) Among Black Women, Jasmin Washington, Dr. Jill Christine Hoxmeier
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) is a prominent public health issue in the U.S., and evidence suggests that IPV disproportionately affects Black women. Additionally, Black women who are victimized may be reluctant to report and/or seek supportive services. Given these disparities, it is important to understand the context of IPV in the Black community. Although the Superwoman Schema (SWS) conceptual framework’s utility for explaining other health-related outcomes, such as mental health issues, among Black women is emerging, its use to understand the experiences of Black women and IPV in the Black community is limited. In this paper, we provide an overview …

Madam President, Ba: Women's Ascent To Power In College Democrats Of Oregon, Sophia G. O'Neal, Jim Moore
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Founded in 2013, College Democrats of Oregon (CDO) is one of 47 state federations under the official youth branch of the Democratic Party, College Democrats of America. For several years, the majority of leadership positions in the organization have been held by women. Scholarship has established that women are at a distinctly gendered disadvantage when running for office, and this study shows its roots begin in student-led political parties like College Democrats, even when women’s leadership seems to thrive. Interviews conducted with current and former women officeholders in CDO have shown that despite the abundance of female leadership, women still …
Impact Of Professional Women Athletes' Media Representations On Collegiate Women Athletes, Rae Martinez, Jennifer Bhalla
Impact Of Professional Women Athletes' Media Representations On Collegiate Women Athletes, Rae Martinez, Jennifer Bhalla
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
There is a lack of representation of women athletes from professional to collegiate sports in U.S. media. For example, Fink (2015) studied the inequities between male and women athletes to understand the harmful nature of the implication of these inequities. Other social constructs arise with the objectification of women athletes. Harrison and Fredrickson (2013) found a connection between aging of adolescent girls to women and an increase of self-objectification. They explained their results using Objectification Theory, which teaches young women to “regard themselves in an objectified gaze” from adolescence. The purpose of this study was to examine women collegiate athletes’ …

“I Will Be Respectful Of The Scheduled Time.”: Hegemony, Productivity, And Time, Kyle Levin
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
Although time is a topic that humans have discussed at length for ages, only recently have sociologists examined time and its relationship to society. The goal of this study aims to investigate the relationship between the time schemes of individuals in everyday life to the macrostructures under dominant control. The study uses qualitative in depth interviews and found (1) a common sense of productivity permeates everyday life and interactions (2) respect and timeliness are linked through expectations of productivity (3) people change their expectations about timeliness given certain contexts. This work suggests that more research is needed that takes into …

A Contextual Analysis Of The Feminization Of Poverty In Urban Slums Of Pakistan, Humaira Zulfiqar, Ra’Ana Malik
A Contextual Analysis Of The Feminization Of Poverty In Urban Slums Of Pakistan, Humaira Zulfiqar, Ra’Ana Malik
Journal of International Women's Studies
The term “feminization of poverty” was coined by Diana Pearce in 1978 who claimed that women heads of households were the poorest of the poor (Pearce, 1978). This concept became very popular in the 1990s after the fourth United Nations Conference on Women. Yet, after a decade of research on the feminization of poverty, Sylvia Chant and many other researchers criticized the narrowness of the concept and highlighted the need of including the gender dimensions of poverty within the definition of feminization of poverty (Chant 2003; Moghadam 2005; Staveren & Odebode, 2007). The research on the feminization of poverty from …
Older Women As Active Online Agents: Diversifying Cultural Conceptions Of “Grannies” Through Social Media, Hanna Varjakoski
Older Women As Active Online Agents: Diversifying Cultural Conceptions Of “Grannies” Through Social Media, Hanna Varjakoski
Journal of International Women's Studies
With the advent of social media, the media environment has become more participatory for its users, making it possible for older adults to produce content for social media and be agential in online spaces. This article observes a group of older women known as Activist Grannies (Aktivistimummot in Finnish) and 60+ Finnish women bloggers who identify as “grannies” to discover what kind of agency social media potentially enables for older women. In addition, this article explores the cultural knowledge produced by older women’s self-representations as activist grannies and “granny bloggers.” I demonstrate that social media offers a space to …
Triumphant Or Trapped Pakistani Women? A Feminist Critique Of Mueenuddin’S “Nawabdin Electrician” And Haq’S Song “Chamkeeli”, Amna Khan
Journal of International Women's Studies
In patriarchal societies, women are traditionally subjugated and suppressed in one way or another. Men are privileged and kept at the center. They speak, express, and dream while benefiting from the autonomy provided to them by the phallogocentric system. By contrast, women are marginalized. Patriarchal writers define women as weak, fragile, helpless, docile, submissive, and emotional. However, this paper reveals that in Daniyal Mueenuddin’s “Nawabdin Electrician” and Abrar-ul-Haq’s song “Chamkeeli,” regardless of a change in times and “gender performativity,” Pakistani male writers continue to stigmatize women. This study shows that although gender roles are changing, women remain subjugated. My paper …
Are We Safe? An Investigation Of Eve-Teasing (Public Sexual Harassment) In India, Usha Rana
Are We Safe? An Investigation Of Eve-Teasing (Public Sexual Harassment) In India, Usha Rana
Journal of International Women's Studies
In recent years, many countries have tightened the rules against harassment in the workplace and violence in the home. On the other hand, incidences of sexual harassment against women in public places have not been paid sufficient attention. Developing countries like India have recorded an increase in sexual harassment cases in public places due to the increase in participation of women in activities outside the home such as education and employment. In India, the term “Eve-teasing” is a euphemism for sexual harassment in public places. Eve-teasing is identified as a significant problem in the patriarchal society of India that carries …

Women Supporting Women: A Glass Ceiling For Women Politicians In Ibadan, Nigeria, Chisaa Onyekachi Igbolekwu, Chukwubueze Ogadimma Arisukwu, Judith Ifunanya Ani, Eunice Uwadinma-Idemudia, Omowumi Oluwaseun Agbemuko
Journal of International Women's Studies
Nigerian women account for almost half of the country’s population, yet they represent a minuscule percentage of elected positions. Many scholars have attributed this to the patriarchal system inherent in Nigeria. This study, however, submits that the rate at which women support women politicians during elections is a major contributing factor to unequal gender representation in Nigerian politics. The concept of the glass ceiling and postcolonial theory guided the explanatory framework for this study. The study was conducted among women within voting age in Ibadan, in southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted a mixed-method design to generalize and gain deep insights. …
Gender Discrimination In Hong Kong Churches, Caroline C. Yih
Gender Discrimination In Hong Kong Churches, Caroline C. Yih
Journal of International Women's Studies
Institutional sexism continues to hinder women’s career progression, creating hurdles that women must overcome in the workplace. The context of institutional religion is not exempt from such gender-related injustice, and women in leadership positions within the ecclesiastical system are vulnerable to overt gender inequality. This article examines gender disenfranchisement in Hong Kong churches. It utilizes data gathered and processed through the qualitative research methodology of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to analyze the lived experience of clergywomen in English-speaking faith communities in Hong Kong. The study reveals the indisputable presence of institutional sexism manifested and perpetuated by a host of gender …
Relevance Of The Remedial Secession Theory For Indonesia's Territorial Integrity, Heribertus Jaka Triyana
Relevance Of The Remedial Secession Theory For Indonesia's Territorial Integrity, Heribertus Jaka Triyana
Indonesian Journal of International Law
This article aims to analyse the remedial secession theory in international law relevant to the current international armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine waged by Russia’s recognition of Donbask and Luhansk independence. It might have legal as well as political impacts on the territorial integrity of a sovereign State such as Indonesia where human rights violations in Papua have become problematic. The analysis in this paper is mainly construed using the paradigm of customary international law as the primary source of international law to find out the relevance of the remedial secession theory in terms of its area, scope, and …
Secondary Trauma And Compassion Fatigue On Middle School Educators, Janna Kilgore-Cameron
Secondary Trauma And Compassion Fatigue On Middle School Educators, Janna Kilgore-Cameron
Ed.D. Dissertations
Educators have been leaving the field of education at a high rate each year with no signs of slowing down. Tennessee, as well as many other states across the country, have started the school year with unfilled positions due to so many vacancies. Previous researchers found educators left due to an overwhelming workload paired with an escalation in student behaviors, a lack of administrative support, and increased stress dealing with secondary trauma and compassion fatigue. Educators shared they felt isolated as they have neglected their own mental and physical health. The purpose of this basic, interpretive qualitative study was to …

Student Retention Through Decision Making And Withdrawal: The Importance Of Course Scheduling In Higher Education, Danielle Faucett
Student Retention Through Decision Making And Withdrawal: The Importance Of Course Scheduling In Higher Education, Danielle Faucett
Dissertations
Student retention is a fundamental issue in higher education, with student decision-making and withdrawal at the forefront of examining that issue. Previous research has shown that personal factors are not easily addressed, but institutional factors, such as the course scheduling process, can be modified. This research study examined how the course schedule can influence degree-seeking students at a state-funded, 4-year institution by exploring the correlation between class standing and the importance of how courses are scheduled, the correlation between class standing and the ability to register for a required course, and what factors predict a student’s decision to withdraw from …
