Ethical Dilemmas And Moral Distress In Companion Animal Veterinary Medicine: Mental Health Implications, Bronwyn Dickson
Ethical Dilemmas And Moral Distress In Companion Animal Veterinary Medicine: Mental Health Implications, Bronwyn Dickson
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Mental health concerns are a significant problem in the veterinary community, and studies suggest that veterinarians working in Western countries are at higher risk of suicide compared to the general population and other healthcare professionals (Bartram et al., 2009; Bartram & Baldwin, 2010; Platt et al., 2012). Additionally, veterinary medicine is an occupation inundated with complex ethical and moral dilemmas. However, current studies are limited in their ability to contextualize the risk and contributing factors fully; therefore, they offer limited insight into effective preventative and support strategies. Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), eight companion animal veterinarians were interviewed about their …

COVID-19 exacerbated health disparities, financial insecurity, and occupational safety for many within marginalized populations. This study, which took place between 2019 and 2022, aimed to explore the way in which sex workers (n = 36) in Chicago were impacted by COVID-19. We analyzed the transcripts of 36 individual interviews with a diverse group of sex workers using thematic analysis. Five general themes emerged regarding the detrimental impact of COVID-19 on sex workers: (1) the impact of COVID-19 on physical health; (2) the economic impact of COVID-19; (3) the impact of COVID-19 on safety; (4) the impact of COVID-19 on …

Evaluation Of Universal Depression Screening In A Pediatric Diabetes Outpatient Clinic With The Integration Of A Depression Screening Tool Into An Electronic Health Record, Jenna Westberry
DNP Projects
Background: Depression is a significant problem for adolescents with chronic health conditions. Prevalence rates are two to three times higher in adolescents with diabetes compared to adolescents without diabetes (Badescu et al., 2016). Routine depression screening is not transpiring at rates and frequency recommended by the American Diabetes Association for this population. Implementing use of the Patient Health Questionnaire for all adolescents over the age of twelve years with Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus during routine health visits may improve early identification and diagnosis of depression and improve long-term health outcomes.
Purpose: The goal of this project was …

Evaluating The Effect Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention Designed To Reduce Compassion Fatigue On Staff Mindfulness, Catherine Siegel
Evaluating The Effect Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention Designed To Reduce Compassion Fatigue On Staff Mindfulness, Catherine Siegel
DNP Projects
Background: Compassion fatigue is “stress resulting from exposure to a traumatized individual” and is described as “a state of physical and mental exhaustion caused by a depleted ability to cope with one’s everyday environment” (Cocker & Joss, 2016, p. 1). Fifty-two percent of mental health workers are experiencing compassion fatigue (The Mental Health of Healthcare Workers in COVID-19, 2020). Behavioral health units have some of the highest turnover rates across hundreds of hospital systems (2019 NSI National Health Care Retention & RN Staffing Report, 2019). Compassion fatigue has been identified as a risk factor for turnover in nurses and statistics …
Improving Nursing Comfort In Relation To Difficult Conversations, Sarah Clifton
Improving Nursing Comfort In Relation To Difficult Conversations, Sarah Clifton
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background/Purpose
Conversations between care providers and patients are integral to medicine and are the most performed “procedure” (Luff et al., 2016). In Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) and Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Units (PCICUs), children of all ages with diverse diagnoses and needs are treated for critical illnesses and traumatic events. Therefore, providers frequently have difficult conversations with patients and their families. Pediatric critical care nurses are often invited to participate in these discussions. However, their role during, and after, these conversations is not always clear. The goal of this project was to evaluate the impact of an educational …
Implementation Of A Death Anxiety Screening Protocol Specific To Patients With Advanced Cancer In An Outpatient Palliative Care Setting, Olivia M. Sasdi
Implementation Of A Death Anxiety Screening Protocol Specific To Patients With Advanced Cancer In An Outpatient Palliative Care Setting, Olivia M. Sasdi
DNP Projects
Abstract
Background: Recent studies have shown that upwards of 80% of patients with advanced cancer suffer from death anxiety resulting in increased physical and psychological suffering. Despite death anxiety’s ubiquitous nature and negative impact, the literature regarding this condition consistently indicates that it remains under-identified and undertreated in patients with advanced cancer. The “Death and Dying Distress Scale” (DADDS) is a clinically validated tool used to identify, measure, and guide effective treatment modalities for death anxiety specifically in patients with advanced cancer, but is scarcely used routinely in practice. Incorporating this screening tool to be used regularly could improve identification …
Beyond Problem-Solving Courts, Erin Collins
Beyond Problem-Solving Courts, Erin Collins
Law Faculty Publications
Problem-solving courts were borne out of a well-meaning experimentalist spirit, one that inspired judges to attempt to close the so-called “revolving door” to the courthouse by providing treatment instead of, or in addition to, incarceration. The problem-solving court movement is now more than thirty years old and the results of this experiment in court reform are underwhelming. Viewed in the most favorable light, studies suggest that problem-solving courts can modestly reduce the likelihood that some court participants will be arrested or convicted again. Meanwhile, the 40% to 60% of people who begin but do not complete problem-solving court programs often …
Mute Eloquence: A Gallery Of Contracting Emojis, Courtney Leon
Mute Eloquence: A Gallery Of Contracting Emojis, Courtney Leon
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
The increasing use of emojis in electronic communications, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has introduced complexity into contract law due to the lack of standardized interpretation. Courts are encountering disputes over emoji meanings, highlighting the need for a uniform framework. The proposed Emoji Codebook aims to address this by categorizing emojis and providing consistent interpretations, aligning with existing laws like the UCC and E-SIGN Act to facilitate clearer contract formation and mitigate misunderstandings.

The Theory of Learning in Micro is a proposed theory on how people micro-learn. This theory is based on the hypothesis that learning is a continual process better supported with smaller, more focused learning resources and activities. Based on two main beliefs, knowledge and design, The Theory of Learning in Micro was crafted as a foundation for how people learn in micro, providing a set of beliefs and assumptions for the microlearning design and development community.

Libraries are charged with being inclusive spaces for all patrons. Library (library and information science [LIS]) preparation programs, by extension, must prepare the next generation of librarians to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. It is imperative that today’s librarians are equipped to infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) theory with best practice when establishing policy and procedure for the library environment, staff, and programing. With little research and no established protocol in LIS education, it is unclear how pre-service librarians are trained in DEI to meet the needs of all users. This exploratory study used a participatory …

The results from this study have provided new findings in relation to faculty and instructional designer UDL implementation efforts in higher education that have implications for training and supporting faculty with UDL application efforts.
Who Has Control In The Courtroom?: Maine Lawyers' Process For Client Representation Family Matters Cases And How Perceptions Of Coercive Control Impact Their Process, Katie Seelen Msw
All Student Scholarship
Supervising Professor: Rachel Casey Informed by the researcher’s work with women struggling through separation and child custody legal proceedings with their abusive male co-parents, the study seeks to understand if and how Maine’s court system considers intimate partner violence (IPV) in family matters cases. The research aims to gain specific insight into family lawyers’ understanding and consideration of coercive control—a term encompassing gender-based, psychologically abusive and controlling behaviors—when representing clients in divorce and parental rights and responsibilities cases. Under the label “post-separation abuse,” growing literature demonstrates the extent to which coercive control among separating co-parents manifests through the family court …
Secondary Traumatic Stress: Therapists’ Past Trauma And Workplace Interventions, Morgan Wickman
Secondary Traumatic Stress: Therapists’ Past Trauma And Workplace Interventions, Morgan Wickman
Honors Program Theses
Secondary traumatic stress (STS) is a type of indirect trauma wherein listening to the traumatic experiences of another causes a stress reaction. STS can lead to PTSD-like symptoms which can develop after only one instance. STS affects mental health professionals at high rates because they have high rates of exposure to traumatic content. In particular, therapists with a personal trauma history have an increased risk of developing STS, as they are more likely to identify with their client’s traumatic experience. This review examines how therapists’ STS severity and frequency is impacted by a personal trauma history. It also identifies workplace …
“To Live In The Body Of A Survivor ”: Unique And Cumulative Disaster Exposure And Mental Health In A Sample Of Hurricane Katrina Survivors, Noelle Serino
Public Health Theses
Introduction: Fueled by the escalation of climate change, weather-related disasters are increasing in frequency and severity. Existing research has documented the extensive harm induced by such disasters, yet few studies have examined how individuals’ psychological well-being fares when exposed to multiple, diverse threats, including other weather-related and public health disasters (e.g., COVID-19). As such, the present study explores posttraumatic and psychological distress in the context of unique and cumulative disaster exposure. Methods: The data utilized for this study came from the Resilience in Survivors of Katrina (RISK) Project. The sample was comprised of 381 predominantly Non-Hispanic Black (84.5%) women who experienced …

Understanding The Current Role Of Social Media In American Samoan Adolescent Lives, Mukund Desibhatla
Public Health Theses
Purpose: This exploratory study investigated the social and cultural factors that shape social media use among adolescents in
American Samoa. Methods: This project was a secondary qualitative analysis. Methodological considerations included an
interpretivist approach to epistemology and alignment with the Fa’afaletui Pacific framework. Phenomenology methods were
used to “bracket” researcher biases. A 21st-century flexible coding approach proposed by Deterding et al. 2021 was applied
to the dataset [31]. Transcript excerpts were re-sorted by the index code: social media/technology as a predictor of mental
illness. An abductive thematic analysis, stemming from inductive and deductive reasoning, was used to analyze the codebook …
Challenges Of Integrating Community Health Workers (Chws) Into Health Systems To Improve Hiv Care Engagement: A Qualitative Study, Yue Hu

Social Determinants Of Health And Functional Disability At Mid- And Late-Life, Carly Pullen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The number and proportion of older adults living in the U.S. and globally are increasing. Not only are more adults living longer (Rania et al., 2021), there is evidence that people are
entering late life with more functional disability than in previous generations (He & Larsen,
2014). Social determinants of health include demographic and environmental influences than can impact a range of health outcomes beyond more direct risk factors (Duran and Perez-Stable, 2019). Using data from 243,693 community-dwelling adults who completed the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, we tested the associations among social determinants of health (i.e., age, …

The Ambiguous Loss Of Alcohol Use Disorders For Affected Family Members: Can Al-Anon Involvement And Psychological Flexibility Make A Difference?, Giselle Hernandez Navarro
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) destroy the health of many afflicted people, as well as their affected family members (AFMs). The purpose of this quantitative dissertation was to explore relevant variables for AFMs based on ambiguous loss theory and relational frame theory. In this study, 310 AFMs completed online surveys through MTurk. Differences in AFMs’ Al-Anon involvement (i.e., no involvement, newcomer, member) were investigated relative to psychological flexibility, psychological inflexibility, boundary ambiguity, distress, and ambiguous loss resilience (i.e., ambiguity tolerance). Results indicated Al-Anon involvement was not a significant variable in relation to AFMs’ distress or ambiguity tolerance outcomes. Psychological flexibility, psychological …

The Utility Of Participatory Family Diagramming In Qualitative Research: Multidisciplinary Applications And Practical Advice, Melissa D. Day, Tyler B. Jamison
Faculty Publications
Graphic elicitation and diagramming are useful for qualitative researchers. Diagrams of families have been used in clinical, education, and other applied settings as tools for description and analysis of family relationships since the 1950s. Despite the potential utility of family diagrams to qualitative researchers who seek to understand and theorize the complexities of family structures and relationships, participatory family diagramming, where diagrams of family relationships are co-created by researcher(s) and participant(s) and used as a foundation for interviewing, has largely remained an untapped resource. We describe how we used participatory family diagrams as design elements of multidisciplinary qualitative interview study …

An Exploration Of The Mental Health Experiences Of Young Women With Diminished Ovarian Reserve, Brittany M. Woods
All ETDs from UAB
Infertility is a reproductive disease resulting in the inability to conceive. One in six individuals will experience infertility in their lifetime. Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) reduces the quantity and/or quality of a female's oocyte pool and is a known cause of infertility. Although this occurs during normal ovarian aging in the late 30s and early 40s, DOR can also impact younger women, increasing their risk for psychological distress from an unexpected diagnosis. The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a deeper understanding of the mental health experiences of young women with DOR through the generation of three manuscripts. Manuscript …
