Teacher Professional Dialogue For Justice-Oriented Practice: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Megan Leigh Normandin Dec 2023

Teacher Professional Dialogue For Justice-Oriented Practice: A Qualitative Action Research Study, Megan Leigh Normandin

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This study used a qualitative action research approach to engage a group of secondary English teachers in a collective inquiry to determine the best model for transformative teacher reflexivity and dialogue. Through solution-focused conversation, the goal was to design a sustainable framework for professional development that fosters creative, just, and compassionate instruction. The primary question explored was: What is an effective structure for sustained reflective dialogue among teachers in a comprehensive public high school? The action research model provided the context for a cyclical process of reflection, discovery, and growth. Findings of this study will form both a blueprint for …

Cervical Cancer Screenings Among Hispanic Women: A Literature Review Of Evidence-Based Interventions, Sara A. Cortez Dec 2023

Cervical Cancer Screenings Among Hispanic Women: A Literature Review Of Evidence-Based Interventions, Sara A. Cortez

Master's Projects and Capstones

Despite effective methods to help detect and prevent cervical cancer, it remains the fourth most common type of cancer impacting women worldwide. Screening practices have significantly decreased the incidence and mortality from cervical cancer; however, Hispanic women continue to experience a much higher incidence compared to their non-Hispanic female counterparts. Screenings are often offered to women with regular access to healthcare who encounter far less barriers to access, such as language, culture, and overall knowledge about the disease. This paper used a qualitative approach which used social-ecological model (SEM) to examine some of the existing evidence-based interventions that aim to …

Health Benefits Of Applying A Mentorship Model In After-School Programs, Katie N. Morataya-Picazo

Master's Projects and Capstones

This work summarizes the existing literature on mentorship models and their health impact and outcomes on the students they serve. I apply these findings to evaluate the experience of Community Partnership for Youth, a local after-school program in Monterey County, CA. This work explores the risks students face from 2 pm to 6 pm. Some supporting articles demonstrate the mentorship model's effectiveness, highlighting commonalities and differences between the relative merits of adult-to-youth and youth-to-youth paradigms. This work’s recommendations and implications involve staffing, training, and funding opportunities to ensure these programs' success.

Antiracist School Counseling Pedagogy: A Quasi-Experimental Multiple Regression Analysis, Star L. Zetocha Dec 2023

Antiracist School Counseling Pedagogy: A Quasi-Experimental Multiple Regression Analysis, Star L. Zetocha

Dissertations

America’s K-12 schools, which were initially created exclusively for White children, are racialized institutions (Spring, 2019). School counseling ethics now obligate school counselors to engage in antiracist praxis in schools, yet school counselors-in-training (SCITs) are not typically provided with explicit training in antiracism, which allows them to enter the field with colorblind racial attitudes that inhibit them from recognizing and confronting racism in schools (Gibson & Fripp, 2022). The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between colorblind racial attitudes and antiracist behaviors of school counselors in-training who had and had not taken an antiracist school counseling course. …

Youth Storytelling For Social Change: Guiding Questions For Effective And Ethical Delivery, Maru Gonzalez, Michael Kokozos, Nyawira Nyota, Christy Byrd

Journal of Extension

Storytelling is a powerful medium through which to nurture and amplify youths' voices. When employed effectively and ethically, storytelling has been shown to foster connection, improve intergroup relations, promote socioemotional well-being, and motivate social action. Drawing on foundational research, Aristotle's three rhetorical appeals, and our experience pilot testing the #PassTheMicYouth curriculum, we developed ten guiding questions for effective and ethical youth storytelling for social change. 4-H professionals can use these questions with youths to guide them through social impact storytelling creation and delivery.

Hughes, Lauren Bochicchio, Laurie Drabble, Maaike Muntinga, Jan S. Jukema, Cindy B. Veldhuis, Sunčica Bruck, Henny Bos

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Evidence from many parts of the world shows that sexual and gender minority (SGM) people have poorer health than their cisgender heterosexual counterparts. Minority stressors, particularly stigma and discrimination, have been identified as major contributors to sexual orientation- and gender identity-related health disparities, particularly negative mental health and behavioral health outcomes. To better understand factors that contribute to these disparities, we conducted a scoping review of SGM mental health and substance use research in the Netherlands—a country with a long-standing reputation as a pioneer in SGM equality. Methods: Using Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines and the PRISMA-ScR protocol, we searched …

Using Ecological Momentary Assessments To Understand How Drinking During Special Occasions Relates To Parenting Behaviors, Bridget Freisthler, Joselyn Sarabia, Jennifer Price Wolf

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Background: Drinking on special occasions (e.g., Super Bowl, Christmas) often results in more alcohol consumed. Further, police often report higher levels of crime, such as assaults and domestic violence, on days of major sporting events (e.g., Super Bowl, World Cup). Yet, drinking behaviors of parents during special occasions or large sporting events have not been assessed for their effects on parenting behaviors. Here, we assess the relationship between drinking during the Super Bowl and on Valentine's Day to determine whether they differ. Methods: Participants, recruited from social media, completed a 40-min baseline survey and 14 days of three daily Ecological …

Background: Although the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) is one of the most widely used self-report assessments of eating disorder symptoms, evidence indicates potential limitations with its original factor structure and associated psychometric properties in a variety of populations, including sexual minority populations. The aims of the current investigation were to explore several previously published EDE-Q factor structures and to examine internal consistency and measurement invariance of the best-fitting EDE-Q model in a large community sample of cisgender gay men and cisgender lesbian women. Methods: Data were drawn from 1624 adults (1060 cisgender gay men, 564 cisgender lesbian women) who participated …

An Exploration Of Two Information Literacy Open Learning Object Repositories: Value, Content, And Engagement, Tiffanie Lynn Ford-Baxter

Communications in Information Literacy

Information literacy (IL) open learning object repositories (LORs) provide a space for librarians to find and exchange instruction resources and lessons. Given many librarians enter the workforce with little or no formal training or educational opportunities to learn about pedagogy, these repositories are indispensable resources to the Library and Information Science field. This study explored the contents of two popular IL LORs, Project Cora and the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy Sandbox, to uncover how users engage with the resources and how the repositories differ. This study's findings suggest that while resources within the LORs …

Unmasking And Addressing Burnout In The Mental Health Profession, Sara Edwards

University Honors Theses

Burnout poses a significant challenge among mental health workers, impacting both the well-being of practitioners and the outcomes for their patients. The key inquiries guiding this literature review are: what factors contribute to burnout, and what interventions are essential for treating and preventing burnout in mental health professionals? The findings reveal that factors such as level of experience, lack of quality supervision, vicarious trauma, working conditions, and personal beliefs significantly contribute to burnout. Effective prevention and treatment measures for mental health workers vulnerable to burnout encompass self-monitoring, participation in support groups, additional training, and organizational interventions. These insights could serve …

Crossover Youth: The Relationship Between Juvenile Dependency And Delinquency, Victoria Davenport

University Honors Theses

This literature review looks at the relationship between juvenile delinquency and juvenile dependency. Specifically, it evaluates the existence of "crossover youth", minors who have been involved with both systems in their lifetime. The review considers thirteen different studies, literature reviews, and databases to determine risk factors in maltreated youth that cause them to offend. The review also looks at the impact that second-generation parents have on likelihood of offending as juveniles, as well as the importance of welfare worker perception on parental involvement with dependency agencies. Finally, the review considers potential interventions to crossover youth, determining how to assist maltreated …

Despite its importance to achieving positive outcomes for vulnerable children and families, use of evidence by child welfare managers and practitioners remains limited. This study describes four types of organizational supports that child welfare agencies may use to facilitate evidence use. Data collected in 2016 from a six-state sample of private child welfare agencies are used to examine agency investment in different supports for evidence use and their association with managerial evidence use. We also identify contextual, organizational, and managerial factors associated with agency investment in these supports. Findings suggest that technical infrastructure is necessary but not sufficient for promoting …

“Why Did Devon Just Leave The Classroom?”: Disability Studies In Education-Informed Related Service Provision, Katie Newhouse, Laurie Rabinowitz

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Public schools often schedule related services by using a mix of pull-out and push-in instruction, referred to as service delivery models. This poses challenges because the transitions to and from services are obvious to other students and can influence student identities and result in a loss of academic instructional time. This article shares inclusive approaches for novice teachers to learn how to organize related service provision in ways that strengthen student identities as individuals with disabilities. By focusing on how our previous teaching and research experiences inform our pedagogical design in our teacher education courses, we seek to open the …

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

The COVID-19 pandemic and the sudden switch from conventional to virtual classes allegedly raised students' risk of mental health illnesses, adversely influencing their academic engagement and learning outcomes. Nursing students in Malaysia, especially those enrolled in universities in Sabah, have traditionally been accustomed to a conventional face- to-face teaching and learning approach. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, e-learning or online classes have become one of the learning methods for university nursing students in Sabah, either while they are on campus or at home, to obtain access for educational purposes. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between …

Occasional Paper Series

This paper recounts a workshop that took place in a polytunnel in a forest school in Sligo, North-West Ireland on a cold day in early-December. The event sought to materialize ‘arboreal methodologies’ (Osgood, 2019; Osgood & Odegard, 2022; Osgood & Axelsson, 2023) which are characterized by the enactment of feminist new materialist praxis to engage in world-making practices (Haraway, 2008) intended to unsettle recognizable tropes of biophilia that have come to frame both child and nature in narrow ways. The arboreal methodologies that participants were invited to mobilise were situated, material, affective, and involved metaphorical and material practices of ‘getting …
