Climate Change In South Asia: A Review Of Perceptions, Coping, And Adaptation Strategies, Mufti Nadimul Quamar Ahmed Apr 2023

Climate Change In South Asia: A Review Of Perceptions, Coping, And Adaptation Strategies, Mufti Nadimul Quamar Ahmed

Student Research Symposium

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing the entire planet. It has been found that South Asia is highly susceptible to the negative consequences of climate change, making it one of the most vulnerable regions in the world. In addition, agriculture makes up the majority of this region's economy, which accounts for the vast majority of GDP. A handful of individuals also occupy an area of arable land that is smaller than 0.1 hectares in size. As a result, local people in the South Asian region, particularly farmers, have utilized a variety of coping and adaptation tactics …

Understanding Pottery Adoption In The Kodiak Archipelago, Elizabeth Groat Apr 2023

Understanding Pottery Adoption In The Kodiak Archipelago, Elizabeth Groat

Student Research Symposium

The ceramic tradition of the Kodiak Archipelago raises interesting questions about decision-making among socially and economically complex hunter-gatherers. Why was pottery adopted, why so late, and why only in the southern archipelago? My thesis research addresses these questions through technological investment thinking and experimental reconstruction. Strategies employed involve discussions with Alutiiq Elders, examination of sherds held in museum collections, lab analysis, and hands-on trial-and-error experimentation. The results will be relevant to questions about Kodiak's history, complex hunter-gatherer groups, pottery adoption, and technological investment in general.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study examines the effects of risk message frames on tourists’ post-pandemic travel intention via the meditation of loneliness and went further to investigate the roles of conflictive family atmosphere and risk propensity in moderating these effects. A situational experiment was conducted in China resulting 622 valid responses. The study found that respondents in risk attenuating frame had higher travel intention than those in risk amplifying frame; social loneliness partially mediated the effect of risk message on travel intention. Conflictive family atmosphere moderated the effects of risk message on social loneliness and travel intention. And risk propensity alleviated the negative …

Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Led Songwriting Intervention On Quality Of Life For Individuals With Chronic Pain, Marcia Henry

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Abstract

Chronic pain affects 20% of the U.S. and global population. With the worsening opioid crisis there is a growing need for alternative therapies. Individuals with chronic pain often experience depression, stress, and poor quality of life. The Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms guided this prospective cohort design project in a pilot study (N = 13) examining the effectiveness of songwriting to improve quality of life in this population. A master’s prepared nurse and experienced songwriter administered 6 weekly songwriting sessions in an online chronic pain support group. Chronic pain (Graded Chronic Pain Scale-Revised & Pain Enjoyment General Activities subscale), depression …

Occupational Therapist Perception And Utilization Of Occupation-Based Evaluation And Assessment With Children And Youth With Asd., Zalome Restrepo, Pam Kasyan-Howe, Kristin Domville, Kristina Hartsook Apr 2023

Occupational Therapist Perception And Utilization Of Occupation-Based Evaluation And Assessment With Children And Youth With Asd., Zalome Restrepo, Pam Kasyan-Howe, Kristin Domville, Kristina Hartsook

Spring 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Children with ASD participate less in ADLs & IADLs than typically developing children(Travers et al.,2022). The problem is a gap between the known occupation-based assessments and utilization of the assessments by occupational therapists treating children and youth with ASD (Manee et al., 2020; Luna, 2019). This gap results in decreased activity participation diversity for the child and decreased ability for the occupational therapists to evidence effectiveness of occupation-based services (Manee et al., 2020; Luna, 2019). The purpose of this quantitative type of capstone project is to analyze occupational therapists who treat children and youth with ASD to determine the utilization …

Maternal Mortality In The United States: An Outlying Social Phenomenon In The Industrialized World, Whitney Buckendorf Apr 2023

Maternal Mortality In The United States: An Outlying Social Phenomenon In The Industrialized World, Whitney Buckendorf

Undergraduate Theses, Capstones, and Recitals

Maternal mortality rates claim the lives of over 300,000 individuals per year, with most of these deaths taking place in low to middle-income nations. Since 1990, maternal mortality rates have declined significantly with a global reduction from 385 to 216 maternal deaths per 100,000 births; an average decline of 2.9% per year. While this is an honorable reduction, there are outlying nations that experience higher than normal maternal mortality rates given their region and circumstance. While many studies focus on lower to middle-income nations for maternal mortality associated with lack of medical access and evolved care, there is also the …

Study Away With Sfa: The Opportunity For Accessible Cross Cultural Learning, Cat Davis, Terra Newsom, Skylar Perry

Undergraduate Research Conference

Study Away was proposed by our professor as an accessible alternative to traditional study abroad programs. Accessible because it is more affordable and it opens up this cross cultural opportunity to students who may be undocumented. We traveled the country for five weeks in a Mercedes sprinter van exploring places such as Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Albuquerque, the Great Lakes, New York City, the Appalachian Mountains, and New Orleans to name a few. Throughout, we engaged in critical conversations and opportunities for self-growth. This presentation will share our perspectives regarding study away as it compares to study abroad.

Coping Mechanisms In Rural Healthcare, Lindsey Bushman Apr 2023

Coping Mechanisms In Rural Healthcare, Lindsey Bushman

Student Research Symposium

I recently moved to a small, rural town to work in healthcare. I have noticed a drastic difference in patient relationships when compared to bigger cities. The healthcare workers in these small areas tend to know the majority of patients they treat personally. I interviewed 30 healthcare workers with direct patient contact from towns of less than 3,000 people to discover their coping methods. How do they keep coming back to work in this environment?

Beyond ‘Bisexual’: Toward A New Conceptualization Of Bi+ Experience, Brook Hutchinson Apr 2023

Beyond ‘Bisexual’: Toward A New Conceptualization Of Bi+ Experience, Brook Hutchinson

Student Research Symposium

Scholars have begun to explore the sexuality binary and the way it is experienced by and reinforced among bisexual individuals. However, extant research has not yet analyzed the experiences of bi+ individuals in heterosexual relationships, including those who have never experienced a non-heterosexual relationship. The current study seeks to fill this gap through a case study of bi+ individuals in Utah. Relying on in-depth interviews with sixteen bi+ identified individuals, this study explores the experiences of bi+ individuals engaged in heterosexual relationships and how these individuals define their sexuality and negotiate their identity. Preliminary analyses reveal unique experiences among this …

Solutions To The Water Crisis By Cache Valley Residents, Marinda Lamb, Brooke Piippo

Student Research Symposium

Cache Valley is full of water, yet has been plagued by the water crisis like much of the Western United States. We employed a few different methods to interview residents of Cache Valley, separating them into groups of community members, water managers, and farmers. In our research we attempted to determine how each of these groups thought the water crisis should be solved.

Social Media And Marketing For Social Workers, Megan Bolan, Jaylee Cox Apr 2023

Social Media And Marketing For Social Workers, Megan Bolan, Jaylee Cox

Student Research Symposium

Marketing for non-profits is an extremely important task for an organization to function well, and social media, in the last decade, has become an important tool for marketing. Through work with the Clinical & Social Work Association (CSWA), it was realized that there is very little information on how to effectively market non-profit organizations such as CSWA to social workers and social work students. There is also little information on how to increase engagement with social workers through social media. We conducted our research using a logic branching mixed methods Qualtrics survey, targeting social workers (licensed or unlicensed) and social …

Cultural Models Of Water In Northern Utah, Dorie Pardone, Jacob Martin, Brelle Christensen, Kayla Warren

Student Research Symposium

Water heritage studies serve as a nexus for research and applied sciences to understand myriad roles that water functions in everyday life. The Water Heritage Anthropological Project evaluates dimensions of water, its infrastructure, and management practices through an interdisciplinary lens. We report on ethnographic work from northern Utah where we conducted semi-structured interviews with three different categories of water users: farmers, water managers, and community members. Our work identifies cultural dimensions of water identity that study participants use to describe their relationship with water. We discuss the social, economic, and environmental implications for communities in the Mountain West.

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman Apr 2023

I Am Not A White Man In A Labcoat: The Normalization Of Identity In Academic Writing, Raina Freeman

Student Work

One deep-seated belief in writing, especially writing instruction, is that there is no place for identity and personal pronouns in pieces that are professional and academic. Students are taught this principle as early as elementary school. However, identity can be used in academic writing as a tool to emphasize credibility on certain topics and can shape writing, whether intentionally or not. Anyone’s writing can benefit from a bit of the author’s perspective, but there is an even deeper need for a diverse range of identities in academia. I intend to discuss how ‘objective’ papers are often read as if written …

The Language Of Lgbt Asylum Discrimination: In A Globalized Age, Sophie Watkins Apr 2023

The Language Of Lgbt Asylum Discrimination: In A Globalized Age, Sophie Watkins

Student Work

Transgender asylum seekers, escaping countries that would otherwise sentence them to death for their gender expression, are forced to express traits to prove their gender identity to asylum officials in order to attain relative safety. Anti-homosexual laws exist in over 70 countries, a majority of the concentration of these laws are in Africa and west Asia (ilga.org). South Africa exists as a bit of a gay haven in the sense that there are constitutional protections for LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people and, according to ILGA (The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association), the only country in Africa …

Understanding The Influence Of Colorism On The Dating Preferences Of Black Undergraduate Students At Predominantly White Institutions, Odessa Foster Apr 2023

Understanding The Influence Of Colorism On The Dating Preferences Of Black Undergraduate Students At Predominantly White Institutions, Odessa Foster

LSU Master's Theses

This study examined the effects of colorism on emerging Black undergraduate college students and how it influences their dating preferences while attending a Predominantly White Institution. The participants were 18-24 years old and self-identified as Black women attending a PWI. A secondary analysis was conducted. The findings of this study revealed that family can influence emerging Black adults dating preferences as they are likely to have the same preference as their family. There is a significantly positive relationship between family preference and dating preferences. This study also examined the correlation between media/social media and dating preferences. As there were positive …

Becoming A Bright Star Through Human Rights Education: (Re)Humanization Through Participation, Daniel Mango

International Journal of Human Rights Education

This essay explores a Human Rights Education (HRE) project that was initiated in the urban slums of Nairobi. The HRE project was combined with photovoice to support participants in the project to become empowered and make lasting change within their communities. The project took place within a pro-gram for young mothers called the Bright Star Initiative. Through 12 weeks of training, these young moms learned about human rights principles, how to apply them to their lives, and how to advocate for change utilizing a human rights framework. The project led to multiple interventions that are currently supporting the populations in …

The Exploration Of Barriers And Facilitators For Black Families Seeking To Privately Adopt Black Infants, Eric Harlin Apr 2023

The Exploration Of Barriers And Facilitators For Black Families Seeking To Privately Adopt Black Infants, Eric Harlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Abstract The adoption of Black children by White parents remains a common practice in both public and private adoption throughout the U.S. Laws such as the Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994 were enacted based on research of the foster care system that indicated it takes twice as long to secure a permanent placement for Black children compared to other children. For over 50 years, the National Association of Black Social Workers has expressed staunch opposition to transracial adoption and held that Black children should be placed only with Black families. Between the opposing views on transracial adoption, there has been …

Effects Of Adaptive Expertise On Counseling Self-Efficacy: The Mediating Role Of Adaptive Performance, Jiaying Meyer

Dissertations

Counseling and psychotherapy expertise research have been focused on three major areas, namely, characterization of Master Therapists, performance of Healing Involvement, and application of Deliberate Practice. The constructs of adaptive expertise and adaptive performance have never been investigated in the context of counseling or psychotherapy. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relevance of adaptive expertise in psychotherapy by studying the relationships between adaptive expertise, adaptive performance, and counseling self-efficacy. A total of 460 psychotherapy practitioners from a variety of disciplines and experiences participated in the study, and they included counseling, psychology, social work, and others with …
