Fatigue And Recovery In Pilots And Air Traffic Controllers: A Military Case Study, Pedro Piedade
Fatigue And Recovery In Pilots And Air Traffic Controllers: A Military Case Study, Pedro Piedade
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023
Fatigue is a known threat to individuals, especially in high demanding and risky tasks, because of its physical, mental, and emotional consequences. In high reliability organizations (HRO), fatigue is a hazard to safety management systems and requires effective mitigation strategies. At the individual level, recovery experiences enable the ability to manage stressful situations at work but can also be effective in dealing with fatigue. In this research, 137 military pilots and air traffic controllers from the Portuguese Air Force (PoAF) responded to an online survey. The results showed that both samples were especially impacted by mental fatigue, but air traffic …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The effect of treatment dose on recovery of post-stroke aphasia is not well understood. Inconsistent conceptualization, measurement, and reporting of the multiple dimensions of dose hinders efforts to evaluate dose-response relations in aphasia rehabilitation research. We review the state of dose conceptualization in aphasia rehabilitation and compare the applicability of 3 existing dose frameworks to aphasia rehabilitation research—the Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type (FITT) principle, the Cumulative Intervention Intensity (CII) framework, and the Multidimensional Dose Articulation Framework (MDAF). The MDAF specifies dose in greater detail than the CII framework and the FITT principle. On this basis, we selected the MDAF …

Background: Low birthweight (LBW) is a leading cause of neonatal mortality in the United States and a major causative factor of adverse health effects in newborns. Identifying high-risk patients early in prenatal care is crucial to preventing adverse outcomes. Previous studies have proposed various machine learning (ML) models for LBW prediction task, but they were limited by small and imbalanced data sets. Some authors attempted to address this through different data rebalancing methods. However, most of their reported performances did not reflect the models’ actual performance in real-life scenarios. To date, few studies have successfully benchmarked the performance of ML …

Collegiate Recovery Programs Are An Effective But Underused Resource On College Campuses, Emily Graham
Population Health Research Brief Series
Substance use disorder is one of the most serious public health issues for young people in the United States. About 30% of full-time college students develop a substance use disorder during their academic careers, and nearly half a million identify as in recovery. Yet, many college campuses lack the resources necessary for college students to access important recovery-based programs and support. This brief explores the barriers to accessing Collegiate Recovery Programs on college campuses and provides recommendations to enhance student engagement and wellbeing.

Addressing the psychosocial concerns of Black men who have sex with men (MSM), such as HIV disclosure, is critical for effective HIV treatment efforts. Black MSM living with HIV experience multiple psychosocial challenges, such as “triple stigma” due to their sexual orientation, racial minority status, and HIV status, which hinder their HIV disclosure and subsequent HIV care-seeking behavior. Our study sought to examine the HIV disclosure patterns and their impact on the HIV care continuum among Black MSM using a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were carried out among 28 Black MSM aged ≥18 years old living in South Carolina. A …

More Than A Test Score: Toward A More Balanced School Accountability System, Joel A. Leader, Barbara L. Pazey
School Leadership Review
Using a zone of mediation framework, we explore how one school district designed a community-based accountability system (CBAS) reflecting community stakeholders’ values, priorities, and goals. We collected rich data sets from a document analysis, focus group, and individual interviews. Our findings indicated a strong dissatisfaction with test-based accountability that led the district to engage its stakeholders in designing a CBAS using multiple achievement measures to report on district success. The importance of collaboration with other districts and leaders at the local, regional, and state levels also emerged. This study highlights the importance of stakeholder involvement, leadership, and collaboration when making …

Purpose/Aims: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among social determinants of health (SDOH), select sociodemographics, and health confidence level in adults receiving care at an urgent care center.
Background/Rationale: To improve overall health and reduce health inequities during a global pandemic and unprecedented rates of inflation, the relevancy and urgency of identifying how patient-level SDOH impact health confidence level are even greater. Extant research indicates a relationship between the number of unmet social needs and low health confidence. Low health confidence predicts poor involvement in self-care and is associated with an increased use of costly health …

A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark
University Honors Theses
The purpose of this literature review is to weave together an understanding of what research exists around art therapy in death and dying, what the role of art therapy is in end-of-life care and education, and determine what gaps exist for further study. When it comes to the topic of death and dying, most of us would agree that end-of-life care is extremely important, though this agreement often falls apart regarding what that care looks like, and how we do (or don't) talk and learn about death and dying. This review argues for an integrated holistic model of care concerning …

Christianity Worldview In Fiction Writing: History, Comparison, And Understanding, Stephen Douglas Flynn
Masters Theses
In researching this paper, the artist learned a great deal about how fiction and popular genres are tied directly to or at least behind the print. First, the research takes a perfunctory look at how the Christian behaviors and, more or less, common morals create what readers know today as a worldview genre, also known by other names. The worldview seeks to present a protagonist who changes something about their view of the world by the end of the story. The paper goes on to look at the Christian worldview from the perspective of religious leaders. While it may seem …
