Prototyping Of Theories, Sisse Schaldemose

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper explores the prospects of prototyping as an aid in understanding theory among students at a higher education. Drawing on research by Buur et.al. (2022) into Design Anthropological Theory Instruments, this research, brings the concept of theory instruments into a teaching setting among social work students. Using research through design (Zimmerman, Stolterman & Forlizzi, 2010), this research explores how working with tangible materials influence students’ understanding of theory. Prototyping theories can help bridge the gap between abstract concepts and concrete application. The research is concerned with the tangibility of abstract theory and explores both the process of making prototypes …

Department of Medical Oncology Posters

Research Objective

In patients with advanced cancer, interprofessional, non hospital-based care models of palliative care or Supportive Oncology (SO) have been shown in some studies to reduce symptom severity, hospital admissions, and healthcare costs. However, there is little consistency in the composition of SO programs or the degree of integration of social work, nutrition counseling, patient navigation, and nursing care services. There is limited research on quality of care and cost outcomes and current fee-for-service models do not cover the high costs of these non-billable services. We examine the impact of Interprofessional SO care on utilization and medical costs in …

Disrupting Epistemic Injustice: Implications For Lived-Experience Accounts Of Mental Illness In Social Work Education, Jessica D. Hawkins Jun 2023

Disrupting Epistemic Injustice: Implications For Lived-Experience Accounts Of Mental Illness In Social Work Education, Jessica D. Hawkins

University Honors Theses

Mental illness stigma interventions have not been shown to be effective on a large scale. It has been suggested by stigma researchers that being in close proximity to people with mental illness, or listening to their lived-experience narratives, could reduce mental illness stigma. This study proposes an inclusion of a Mad studies framework in social work education -- a framework that highlights the importance of lived-experience accounts of mental illness in knowledge production about this population. Inclusion of lived-experience narratives could reduce stigma and discrimination of people with mental illness among social workers and other service providers.

Linkage To Outpatient Treatment In Inpatients With Alcohol Use Disorder Started On Naltrexone, Stephanie Stamatis

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Naltrexone is a full opioid antagonist approved for the treatment of alcohol use disorder that can effectively reduce alcohol consumption. There are few studies that study the impact of starting naltrexone for alcohol use disorder in the inpatient setting. We propose to compare rates of outpatient treatment follow-up for alcohol use disorder in hospitalized patients who are referred to treatment without initiating naltrexone versus those initiated on oral naltrexone or injectable naltrexone. Using an open-label, randomized clinical trial design, we will enroll 75 adults aged 18 to 55 with alcohol use disorder admitted to a general medicine inpatient service and …

Workers With Suspected Diagnosis Of Silicosis: A Case Study Of Sarcoidosis Versus Siderosis, Diemen Delgado-García, Patricio Miranda-Astorga, Ashley Delgado-Cano, Juan Gómez-Salgado, Carlos Ruiz-Frutos

School of Medicine Publications

Silicosis is one of the most important occupational respiratory diseases worldwide, hence the importance of making a correct diagnosis. Diagnosis is commonly based on radiological findings according to the ILO International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconioses and occupational exposure. High-resolution computed tomography is indicated for differential diagnosis. This article presents two cases with an initial diagnosis of silicosis that ended up being diagnosed as sarcoidosis and siderosis, respectively. The first case was a 42-year-old male who worked as a crushing operator in an underground copper and molybdenum mine for 22 years. He had a history of exposure to silicon dioxide …

College Teaching As Care Work, Julie Collins-Dogrul Jun 2023

College Teaching As Care Work, Julie Collins-Dogrul

Feminist Pedagogy

Sociology and higher education pedagogy scholars argue that college teaching is care work. I analyze reader comments generated by two essays published in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Ed about academic care work and find that many commentators think women should care less. Commenters argued that care work was detrimental to student development and faculty performance. In contrast, I argue that care work promotes learning. What is needed are institutions that make it clear that care work is an expectation for all professors, that provide training to enhance care in the classroom, office, lab, and the field, …

Book Review: A Women’S Place: U.S. Counterterrorism Since 9/11, Tahmina Sobat Jun 2023

Book Review: A Women’S Place: U.S. Counterterrorism Since 9/11, Tahmina Sobat

Feminist Pedagogy

Cook, J. in her book named "A women’s place: U.S. Counterterrorism since 9/11" identifies shortcomings in the accessibility of gendered security studies and tries to bridge the gap between the academic world and government actions regarding security and its relation to women's position. Accordingly, Cook provides a framework to organize and assess how women can be brought into all security aspects, particularly countering terrorism (p. 2). This review will highlight different aspects of the above-mentioned agencies' work concerning women, and I will mostly reference examples of Afghanistan from the book.

The Plain Anabaptist People At Mid-Century (1930-1969) / In Memoriam, Cory Anderson, Steven Reschly

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

With volume 11, JAPAS now enters its second decade of publication. For those keeping count, Volume 10 included only one issue, for this editor needed a short sabbatical after a decade of leadership. In this issue, we focus on a recent past—the plain people at mid-century (roughly 1930-70)—that is slowly becoming a more distant past. Those experiencing this era are largely aged or have passed on, and in this issue, we spend time reviewing the historical documents, research and data, and autobiographies they have left. [First paragraph.]

Preparation Procedures Of Food And Beverage Samples For Oxygen Bomb Calorimetry: A Scoping Review And Reporting Checklist, Zane Hopper, Ben Desbrow, Shelley Roberts, Chris Irwin

Journal of Food and Drug Analysis

Standardised bomb calorimetry methods are essential to accurately quantify the gross energy within food and beverages, yet no accepted protocols exist. The objective of this review was to synthesise literature on food and beverage sample preparation methods used for conducting bomb calorimetry. This synthesis enhances our understanding of the extent to which methodological variances may currently affect estimates of the caloric values of dietary items. Five electronic databases were searched for peer reviewed literature on food and beverage energy measurement via bomb calorimetry. Data were extracted on seven identified methodological themes, including: (1) initial homogenisation, (2) sample dehydration, (3) post-dehydration …

Student Mistakes In Elite School Classrooms: Teacher Reflections And Reported Instructional Strategies, Maleka Donaldson Jun 2023

Student Mistakes In Elite School Classrooms: Teacher Reflections And Reported Instructional Strategies, Maleka Donaldson

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

This article explores how teachers respond to student mistakes in one educational setting—an elite private high school. This qualitative study is a thematic analysis of in-depth, semi-structured interviews with teachers at one such school. The results reveal that in their responses to student mistakes, the teachers work to build trust and emotional safety, give students agency throughout the learning and feedback processes, and ask probing questions that rigorously challenge their thinking. By considering teacher accounts of their instructional approaches and past experiences, the study adds a context-specific, real-world perspective on how teachers in an elite school frame student mistakes.

Stroking Reflexivity Into Practice: The Pros And Cons Of Resorting To Gatekeepers To Conduct Qualitative Criminological Research, Gabriela Mesquita Borges, Ana Guerreirro, Leonardo Conde

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

Accessing research settings and participants can be deeply challenging for scientific research, especially when gatekeepers are involved. Gatekeepers are known to affect research through, among other reasons, their position inside institutions, their knowledge of the research topic, and their power over prospective participants. This article explores the methodological and ethical challenges that may arise from resorting to gatekeepers to access participants in qualitative criminological research. Using reflexive notes from the fieldwork of two doctoral research projects in criminology, this article emphasizes the central role gatekeepers can assume in qualitative research regarding gaining access to participants for a study and conducting …

Dying In Prison: End-Of-Life Care Services In A State Correctional Facility, Brook Cooley Webb, Mollee K. Steely Smith, Tusty Ten Bensel

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

The aging inmate population in American prisons has noticeably increased, contributing to a more significant number of offenders who will die in prison, thus forcing correctional facilities to aid in caring for prisoners at the end of life. Two common responses have emerged to deliver adequate healthcare to inmates, including hospice programs and End-of-Life (EOL) care services. This study aimed to explore the nature of EOL care in a state prison by interviewing correctional administrators, correctional officers, and relevant medical personnel (N=17). The current study provided insight into the inclusion criteria for inmates who utilized EOL care in the prison …

Shared Care Networks Assisting Older Adults: New Insights From The National Health And Aging Trends Study, Mengyao Hu, Vicki A Freedman, Sarah E Patterson, Nora Lewis

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Caregiving research often assumes older adults receiving care have a primary caregiver who provides the bulk of care. Consequently, little is known about the extent to which care responsibilities are shared more evenly within a care network, the characteristics associated with sharing, or the consequences for meeting older adults' care needs.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyze a sample of U.S. older adults receiving care from the 2011 National Health and Aging Trends Study (n = 2,398). Based on variables reflecting differences in care hours, activities, and care provided by the whole network, we create network typologies …

A Grounded Theory Study Of The Grief Process In Women Who Experienced Perinatal Loss Prior To 1980, Tina L. Saunders Jun 2023

A Grounded Theory Study Of The Grief Process In Women Who Experienced Perinatal Loss Prior To 1980, Tina L. Saunders

Dissertations

Approximately one million women suffer from perinatal loss (PL) in the United States annually. Societal and provider knowledge and attitudes about the psychological effects of PL and the need for care and support have improved significantly since the 1980s. Anecdotal evidence indicates that experiencing PL still affects women decades later; however, its impact on their grief process and long-lasting effects has not been researched. These narratives are vital to informing support and care. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical framework describing grief processes and long-lasting effects on women experiencing PL before 1980.

Spotlight On Innovative Recruitment Strategies: Northwest Ohio Fellowship Program, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)

Other QIC-WD Products

Ohio is a county-administered children services (formerly known as child welfare) system. Like many other states, Ohio is experiencing a shortage of child protective services (CPS) workers. County leaders report that this is due to high rates of turnover compounded by rising wages and competition from outside employers. Traditional recruitment techniques and programs, including traditional partnerships with universities with social work programs, are not adequate to meet the current level of need for new children services workers. Although social work majors come to children service agencies with a training set that allows faster onboarding, social work majors make up less …
