Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
INTRODUCTION: To accommodate the complex healthcare needs of the rising geriatric population, Stamford Hospital’s (SH) emergency department (ED) began a Geriatric Emergency Medicine Initiative (GEMI) in 2018 to improve our ED environment, practices, and focused assessments for our community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: This retrospective program evaluation describes SH’s novel ED processes for at-risk older adults and compares GEMI and non-GEMI assessed patient outcomes using aggregate frequencies on throughput metrics such as length of stay (LOS), 72 hour and 30-day re-admission rates, and other outcomes of interest. Chi-square tests and group t-tests were used for all analyses with a p-value of …

Local Approaches To Address Global Challenges: Educating Local Innovators For Positive Social Change, Martha Leticia Silva-Flores, Melisa Ladrón De Guevara
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Aligning global concerns with local challenges is essential for achieving long-term sustainability. This entails addressing local communities’ needs and issues to develop effective and sustainable solutions. This approach not only benefits communities but also has the potential to impact the environment and society positively. Local innovators play a fundamental role in promoting sustainable development by devising creative and sustainable solutions to problems affecting their communities. However, in the case of local entrepreneurs in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (GMA), their ventures often have a fleeting lifespan, limiting their impact on global challenges. This research study, therefore, focuses on empowering these local …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The COVID-19 pandemic brought global disruptions to the way universities operate. Online learning abruptly took priority, as the physical campuses in Australian universities became deserted. Staff had to instantly adapt to major changes in work practices, whilst continuing to support students’ engagement and maintain quality teaching and learning. This article discusses how change fatigue during the pandemic impacted the wellbeing of staff working in the enabling education sector. As staff and student wellbeing is interdependent, gaining a better understanding of the influences on staff wellbeing in the post-pandemic era is worth exploring in the context of discussions around student wellbeing …

The Development And Evaluation Of Nurse-Created Video Modules To Encourage Healthy Behaviors Among Women With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos), Rebecca Akers
Doctoral Projects
Problem Statement: Women with PCOS have a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity, a problem that is directly linked with many of the symptoms and long-term health problems experienced by these individuals. Research studies indicate that lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes and increased physical activity aimed at promoting weight loss, are often the initial approach to treatment, but many women fail to adopt those health-promoting behaviors, which may be due to insufficient teaching and support provided by healthcare professionals.
Purpose: Utilize Pender’s Health Promotion Model to develop and evaluate a set of educational video modules focused on encouraging women with …

Lack Of Quality Media Representation For Transgender Women, Seth Ririe
Lack Of Quality Media Representation For Transgender Women, Seth Ririe
FHSS Mentored Research Conference
“Transgender” is a term used to describe people whose gender identity is incongruent with their sex assigned at birth. This brief discusses transgender women (that is, transgender people whose gender identity is female) and their experiences with popular narrative media representation. Transgender women are improperly or under-represented due to a lack of transgender media creators, the American public opinion of transgender women, and audience fragmentation, which keeps media featuring transgender women away from wider audiences. As a result of the lack of quality media representation for transgender women, stereotypes surrounding transgender women become more prevalent and transgender women may experience …

The Lived Experience Of Dually-Roled Counseling Supervisors Working In Settings That Require Simultaneous Clinical And Administrative Supervisory Roles: A Qualitative Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study, Amy Lynn Hayes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Counseling supervision is an essential component of the continuity and expansion of the workforce providing mental health treatment to the increasing numbers of those in need. This research explored the experience of dually-roled counseling supervisors. Dually-roled supervisors are responsible for monitoring administrative work task performance while simultaneously providing clinical skill development to their assigned supervisees. This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study sought to understand how these supervisors felt, as they navigated the challenges and managed the complexity of the colliding roles. Specifically, six supervisors who had to apply administrative disciplinary action to their supervisees were interviewed to glean insights into potential …

The Single Father In The Christian Church And Their Struggles, Kennedy Abbott
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This thesis project is about a severe but unseen problem in the church. The single fathers in the Christian church have been quietly struggling because many do not seek help. Caretakers of this single-father ministry identify and are aware of the struggle affiliated with single fathers, summarized from personal experience in Chapter One. In Chapter Two, this research elucidates the severity of the problem related to children separated from either parent, possibly leading to behavioral concerns in school, the community, and the home. The fundamental principles of this research derives from gathering data relevant to this research to support this …
Trans-Centered Acceptance Within A University: Offering A Model Of Acceptance Created By And Centered Around Trans Student Experiences, Sean Te Maulding
Trans-Centered Acceptance Within A University: Offering A Model Of Acceptance Created By And Centered Around Trans Student Experiences, Sean Te Maulding
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Despite attending the same universities and working toward the same degrees, trans students and cisgender students do not always have the same perceptions of acceptance at their university. The transmale, gender nonconforming, and gender nonbinary students who participated in this study continue to experience a layer of rejection due to their gender identities and expressions. Using queer theory and feminist standpoint theory, this study sought to answer the question of what acceptance looks like from the standpoint of trans students at the University. Through these theoretical lenses and thematic analysis, it was determined that there were four general levels of …

Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Over the past two decades, the scope of Title IX has expanded drastically and now includes the investigation and adjudication of sexual misconduct cases through campus tribunals. Beginning in 2011, the Obama Administration, through a “Dear Colleague Letter” and subsequent guidance, initiated this process by establishing guidelines that required schools to develop and implement policies and procedures for the handling of sexual misconduct cases. Following the publication of the Obama-era guidance, schools scrambled to ensure compliance with the federal guidance, which led to a myriad of applications by universities. Unfortunately, the fallout from the 2011 guidance was widespread litigation initiated …

Aequitas: Seeking Equilibrium In Title Ix, Raymond Trent Cromartie
University of Dayton Law Review
In 2011, the Obama Administration introduced the Dear Colleague Letter (“DCL” or “Letter”), which drastically reshaped the nature and scope of Title IX and redefined how sex-based discrimination is viewed and addressed on college campuses around the country. While the overall intent of the Letter was to address historical mishandlings of sexual misconduct on the part of victims, including sexual assault in higher education, many commentators have expressed the concern that the guidelines aggressively pursued this end without considering several sweeping impacts. Where Title IX used to be a means for providing equal access to education through government oversight, through …
