A Christian Framework For Competitive Sport, Owen Leibrock
A Christian Framework For Competitive Sport, Owen Leibrock
22nd Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2023)
Christianity and competitive sport have a long history of interaction, oftentimes adversarial in nature. Yet in the last century and a half, Christians have embraced sport in such foundational ways that it is often now hard to imagine sport without certain Christian ideas and images. Competitive sport has taken on many forms and has been used in many ways both destructive and constructive. This wide range of Christian responses to sport throughout history begs the question: Does competitive sport truly fit within a framework of Christian ethics and values?
In order to answer this question, I will engage with theories …

Exploring The Dynamics Of Negotiating Everyday Sexism In India: A Daily Diary Study, Sudha Shashwati, Parul Gupta, Preeti Kapur
The Qualitative Report
This study was undertaken to investigate the negotiation of everyday sexism encountered by college going young adult women in India in an urban context. An open-ended daily diary form was constructed, and 185 such forms were filled by 58 women enrolled in various colleges of a central university located in Delhi, India. These were analysed by content analysis with the help of NVivo software with a focus on target and type of sexism reported as well as response to sexist incident faced. The findings of this study reveal that participants chose inaction (53%) more than confronting sexism (47%), and reasons …
A Critique Of Aristotle: Countervoluntary Action And Moral Injury, Melissa Altsman
A Critique Of Aristotle: Countervoluntary Action And Moral Injury, Melissa Altsman
LSU Master's Theses
“A Critique of Aristotle: Countervoluntary Action and Moral Injury,” is a critique of Aristotle’s view that countervoluntary action does not affect character. I argue that a countervoluntary action can affect character when said action leads to a moral injury. Throughout this critique I use military experiences of moral injury to bolster my argument. This critique focuses on Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, and is directed at his Nicomachean Ethics specifically. The upshot of my critique is to not only argue that countervoluntary action affects character, but to spotlight specifically why it is character affecting. Essentially, my aim is to call attention …

Gift To Endow Faculty Chair Focused On Capitalism's Relationship To Common Good, University Of Dayton
News Releases
Thomas W. Albrecht '76 and his wife, Ellen, have seen how free market capitalism and wealth creation can serve the common good, especially when examined through the lens of Catholic social teaching. Through their generosity, the Albrechts are establishing the Thomas W. Albrecht Chair in Capitalism and the Common Good in the University of Dayton School of Business Administration's economics and finance department to share those lessons with students and the public.
The Non-Apprehension Of Selfhood And Metaphysical Freedom, Christopher Rinderle
The Non-Apprehension Of Selfhood And Metaphysical Freedom, Christopher Rinderle
LSU Master's Theses
In this work I take on one of the most axiomatic assumptions humans possess. The sense of self is embedded so deeply inside each one of us that to question it seems utterly ridiculous. Fortunately, I do not outright reject the notion of selfhood. I investigate what it is and is not through multiple angles – ancient and contemporary – which leads to investigations of free will and responsibility.
In the first chapter, I discuss the Buddhist anātman or non-self. I argue that the historical Buddha did not endorse the idea that the self must be overcome through enlightenment – …

Beyond Compulsion: Félix Ravaisson's Conception Of Habit, Christopher Johnson
Beyond Compulsion: Félix Ravaisson's Conception Of Habit, Christopher Johnson
LSU Master's Theses
In opposition to a tendency present within the history of Western philosophy to regard ‘habit’ as a conservative force (represented by figures including Descartes, Spinoza, and Kant), contemporary philosophers working on habit (including Clare Carlisle and Catherine Malabou) have marshaled the thought of nineteenth century French philosopher Félix Ravaisson. With recourse to the ‘double law of habit,’ Ravaisson, in his 1838 doctoral thesis, depicts habit as both resistance and receptivity to change. I begin, in Chapter One, with a brief overview of the aforementioned negative evaluations of habit, as surveyed separately by Carlisle and Malabou. As these contemporary philosophers observe, …
Composing The Book Of Jeremiah: Relocating The Oracles Against The Nations In The Masoretic Text, Brenna C. Salverson
Composing The Book Of Jeremiah: Relocating The Oracles Against The Nations In The Masoretic Text, Brenna C. Salverson
Honors College Theses
The thesis conducts a textual critical analysis of the Book of Jeremiah’s placement of the oracles against the nations in the Masoretic Text and Septuagint. The following questions will be explored: 1) are the oracles against the nations a late addition to Jeremiah? 2) does the Masoretic Text relocate the oracles against the nations? and 3) do keywords and phrases that occur in the oracles against the nations appear in the content preceding and following the oracles in the Masoretic Text and Septuagint? Implications of the questions include the radical scribal decision to rearrange the Book of Jeremiah and the …
The Possibility Of Relationships With Others, Joshua Severud
The Possibility Of Relationships With Others, Joshua Severud
LSU Master's Theses
Levinas offers a rich philosophical insight into the kind of responsibility and ethics that we must have for the Other. This involves a certain conception of what it means to be hospitable which turns out to be impossible. In order to talk about how this impossible relationship can occur, I use Heidegger’s description of the existential Being-with structure and Derrida’s conception of the event in order to make sense of how this Levinasian relationship can possibly exist in spite of—or thanks to—its impossibility.
The Nature And Role Of Phenomenology In Hegel And Heidegger, Gabriel W. Connor
The Nature And Role Of Phenomenology In Hegel And Heidegger, Gabriel W. Connor
LSU Master's Theses
In this work I compare Hegel and Heidegger’s conception of phenomenology and its role in their thinking. Though these two thinkers are not often examined from this angle, and though there is controversy surrounding just how phenomenological each thinker might actually be, an examination of the two thinkers in this regard serves to identify interesting connections between Hegel and Heidegger while also raising questions about phenomenology in general. In short, I seek to establish that phenomenology in both Hegel and Heidegger is not adequately understood unless it is placed in the context of each thinker’s conception of human freedom along …

Re-Imagining Tibetan Buddhist Mandalas: The Practical Incorporation Of Contemporary Aesthetics With Traditional Vajrayana Symbolism, Kaelyn Escuadra
Re-Imagining Tibetan Buddhist Mandalas: The Practical Incorporation Of Contemporary Aesthetics With Traditional Vajrayana Symbolism, Kaelyn Escuadra
Research and Creativity Symposium
Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism, along with its beliefs and practices, has largely remained hidden from the world; however, the rich tradition has much to offer religiously, philosophically, and through its artwork. This project provides a brief overview of Tibetan Buddhist history, the development of the field of aesthetics, and the methods through which these areas can be combined in a re-incorporation and re-imagining of traditional Vajrayana symbolism present in Vajrayana mandalas in and with contemporary aesthetic ideas.

Moved To Compassion: Envisioning Parables In The Gospel Of Luke, Patrick J. O'Kernick
Moved To Compassion: Envisioning Parables In The Gospel Of Luke, Patrick J. O'Kernick
Dissertations (1934 -)
The primary goal of modern parable studies seems to be objective, more or less impersonal, interpretations. The subjective experience of the reader, the ways in which real readers are active and personally engaged in their encounters with parable texts—these things have hardly been addressed. Moreover, narrow views of reception activity have yielded narrow views of the parables themselves. Why, after all, read a parable firsthand? This is the central concern of my study. From reader response criticism, education-oriented reading research, cognitive psychology, and cognitive literary studies I derive what I call an Envisionment-Development Model of Reading (EDMR). According to EDMR, …
Pop Spirituality In The Context Of Nepal, Kalinda Benson
Pop Spirituality In The Context Of Nepal, Kalinda Benson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In this research report, Pop Spirituality in the Context of Nepal, I look to add clarity to what it means to be “spiritual” and how that has been applied historically in context of Nepal. This paper focuses on what has led up to our modern day perceptions on spirituality. In the first section of the paper, I briefly describe what I mean when I say, “pop spirituality” or a “modern spirituality.” I define spirituality and how it differs from religion, a religion, and what secularization is. I want to acknowledge that there are many types of spirituality that exist of …

The Many Shades Of Anne Boleyn, Allison C. Turner
The Many Shades Of Anne Boleyn, Allison C. Turner
Honors Theses
Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII and the mother to Elizabeth I, is a famous historical figure who has been the focus of many fictional dramas. Mysteries surrounding Anne’s looks and her involvement in historical events has created interest that allow historical fiction writers to produce different version of Anne Boleyn on film and in the theater. Multiple of these fictional representation of Anne Boleyn processes feminist ideals that are a result of the feminist wave happening at the time. Though a feminist lens, one can see how the portrayal of Anne Boleyn has varied. This project …

Monetary Muddles: Money And Language, Ethics And Theology, Tyler Womack
Monetary Muddles: Money And Language, Ethics And Theology, Tyler Womack
Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation offers a theological critique of political economy by turning to Wittgenstein in order to re-think what “criticism” is and can be. It diagnoses the current state of critical discourse about money as incapable of properly dealing with the confusions or illusions such criticism identifies as intrinsic to our ways with money and economic production and exchange. The dissertation argues that while political economic critiques and heterodox theories of money rightly challenge the economic orthodoxy’s individualism and its illusions of an apolitical money and an autonomous market economy, these “social” critiques are caught in a Geltungslogik that dichotomizes “value” …
