Ecological Solidarity And Sustainable Development In Africa, Ambrose Esigbemi Umetietie
Ecological Solidarity And Sustainable Development In Africa, Ambrose Esigbemi Umetietie
The Journal of Social Encounters
Today we are faced with a challenge that calls for a shift in our thinking, so that humanity stops threatening its life support system. We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own ... This will happen if we see the need to revive our sense of belonging to a larger family of life (Maathai, 2010). According to John Paul II, the “threat of ecological breakdown is teaching us the extent to which greed and selfishness - both individual and collective - are contrary to the order of creation, an order …

Inside Out Apologetics: Engaging Christian And Postmodern Approaches To Higher Education, Camila Alejandra Roldan Hernandez
Inside Out Apologetics: Engaging Christian And Postmodern Approaches To Higher Education, Camila Alejandra Roldan Hernandez
Masters Theses
The current decline in performance and effectiveness of higher education makes it necessary to re-evaluate the teaching foundation on the theology of human nature that college professors hold. Since their foundation determines the approach that defines them as teachers, their pedagogy, and their curriculum, it is essential to consider two approaches. One of them is the transcendent approach of the Christian faith that defines human beings as lovers, believers, and thinkers. The other approach is the autonomist postmodern approach which defines human beings as social constructs. Since the college professor’s approach to human nature affects students' learning outcomes, this thesis …

Rethinking 2 Peter 3:10–13: An Exposition Of This Millennial Restoration And Eternal State Telescoping Prophecy, Robert H. Franklin
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Second Peter 3:10–13 is one of the most debated passages in Scripture. Understandably, the text concerns eschatology which evokes diverse perspectives. Accordingly, this dissertation will research two majority views on 2 Peter 3:10–13 and one minority view on 2 Peter 3:10–13 for which there is evidence that it was held by a few ante-Nicene fathers. After the ante-Nicene era, expositors have almost universally interpreted 2 Peter 3:10–13 as a single meaning prophecy pertaining entirely to the eternal state. A common agreement in the two majority views on 2 Peter 3:10–13 is that fire will be the means that God will …

Major Endowment Will Support New Farms Projects
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Karen and Alan Ashton of Orem, Utah, have established a significant FARMS endowment to support the timely implementation of new projects. Their generous gift will ensure that important new research opportunities are not missed while waiting for funding to become available--the endowment will support scholars in pursuing these research opportunities until normal sources of funding are established. This new funding and the increased amount of research it will support both necessitate and make possible the creation of a new position of Director of Research to help in the development of new projects and the supervision of ongoing projects.

In the latest Review of Books on the Book of Mormon, editor Daniel Peterson selects the books he would most recommend to his readers from among those published in 1994. The book by Warren and Michaela Aston is the most highly recommended in this issue: In the Footsteps of Lehi: New Evidence for Lehi's Journey across Arabia to Bountiful (reviewed by Ara Norwood). Peterson recommends the book enthusiastically for its "brief and rather personal summary of the authors' extremely important research into the Arabian geography" that might correspond to 1 Nephi.

Language Shifts Provide Evidence
Language Shifts Provide Evidence
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
In a recently published article, "Dating the Book of Mormon to Pre-exilic Language Structure," Angela M. Crowell reports her findings from a study of language patterns. Crowell bases her findings on recent research about Classical Biblical Hebrew and Late Biblical Hebrew, the languages of Judah before and after the Babylonian exile in 586 B.C. Scholars have identified the books of Samuel and Kings as classic examples of preexilic writing. Because much of the same historical account is given in postexilic Chronicles, they can observe the change in language patterns and terminology that took place during the exile.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
On 27 September, Professor Ninian Smart, an internationally recognized scholar of comparative religion and philosophy of religion from the University of California, Santa Barbara, visited Utah Valley to give a keynote address at a conference held at a nearby college. During his visit, Professor Smart met with FARMS Brown Bag attendees to discuss his experiences in the field of religious studies. He pointed out that it is increasingly a multidisciplinary field that makes greater demands on those who study it. In particular he discussed the need for scholars in religious studies to gain an empathetic perspective on the subject they …

Terms For Ancient Places
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The terminology that we use to refer to long lost lands and cultures can be confusing. For example, the October FARMS Update (number 108) referred to Mesopotamia in the cultural sense rather than in a geographic sense - ancient Ebla was at various times within the cultural sphere of Mesopotamia but is not part of the geographic area usually referred to as Mesopotamia. Even the geographic sense is ambiguous; some reputable reference works (perhaps the majority) use Mesopotamia to refer to the fertile land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, while others extend the area considered to be part of …

A Tale Of Two Fathers: Leadership Between The Estate And The Study House In The Origin Story Of Eliezer Ben Hyrcanus, John Mandsager
A Tale Of Two Fathers: Leadership Between The Estate And The Study House In The Origin Story Of Eliezer Ben Hyrcanus, John Mandsager
Journal of Religious Competition in Antiquity
The coming-of-age tale of R. Eliezer b. Hyrcanus, found in a number of late midrash collections, contains competing ideals of masculine mastery and leadership. Through analysis of the three main characters of the story, R. Eliezer, and his two fathers, Hyrcanus, and his master R. Yoḥanan b. Zakkai across the variants of the story, this article demonstrates that the spaces of the agricultural estate and the study house are idealized in competing ways in rabbinic midrash as spaces for mastery of ideals of masculine identity (success in estate management and excellence in Torah study). In addition, Hyrcanus and R. Yoḥanan …

Authorship Essays Reprinted
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Since 1830, millions of people have read the Book of Mormon and have been convinced that Joseph Smith's account of its origins is correct-that it is an ancient document given to him for a season by a divine messenger to translate by the gift and power of God. Critics, however, have argued that the book must be a fraud.

Byu Symposium Focuses On Historicity And Scriptures
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
On February 23 and 24, the BYU Religious Studies Center sponsored a "Symposium on Historicity and the Latter-day Saint Scriptures." Critics raise questions regularly about whether the scriptures are actually historical documents or are instead either frauds or some form of faith-promoting fiction. This symposium, organized by Paul Y. Hoskisson, associate professor of Ancient Scripture at BYU, brought together a dozen LDS scholars to discuss the nature of the evidence that supports the historicity of the scriptures.

Loprieno, professor of Egyptology and chair of the department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles, discussed ancient Egyptian initiation rites described in religious writings such as the Pyramid Texts, the Coffin Texts, the Book of the Dead, and a group of texts designated as Netherworld Books. His lectures captured the interest of many BYU faculty members and more than 200 students and other members of the community.

New Name, New Organization, But Same High Quality Found In Latest Issue Of Review
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The Review of Books on the Book of Mormon, published by FARMS since 1989, has attempted to assist students of the Book of Mormon by reviewing every significant publication about the Book of Mormon published each year. While that commitment remains unchanged, the focus of the reviews published in the last several issues has expanded to match the expanding interests of FARMS - first, the Book of Mormon, and then other ancient scripture and related topics; thus the name of the Review has been changed to the FARMS Review of Books to more accurately reflect this expanded focus.
