Heterotopic Sports Coaching: Facilitating Epistemic Revolution, Sebastian D. L. Harvey Jan 2023

Heterotopic Sports Coaching: Facilitating Epistemic Revolution, Sebastian D. L. Harvey

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Sports culture, including its traditional coaching practices and norms aligned with orthodox masculinity, has profound negative implications for the mental health and well-being of athletes. To improve athlete mental health and well-being sports coaching must challenge harmful cultural norms. Sports coaching has repeatedly been problematized through a poststructuralist Foucauldian lens; however, predominantly absent from the literature is Foucault’s concept of heterotopia that enables rule-breaking practices to exist. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is two-fold: (a) to explore Foucault’s heterotopia within the context of sports coaching and (b) to demonstrate its use in altering the culture of sports. I begin …

Display Of Plenty: Addressing Food Insecurity On Campus, Adrienne Warner, Sarita Cargas, Sarah Johnson

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This chapter describes how undergraduate students created an interactive display in an academic library to address food insecurity among students at their university. In the 2021 fall semester, students in the Honors College course, The Human Rights of Students, created a visual display to present and refine their work on raising awareness of food insecurity. Spurred by the 2020 University of New Mexico Basic Needs Report, they engaged others in conversation through digital and analog media to dispel stigma and promote resources. Not only did it raise awareness, their undergraduate research project embodies several social justice tenets found in the …

Open-Source, Highly Efficient, Post-Acquisition Synchronization For 4d Dual-Contrast Imaging Of The Mouse Embryonic Heart Over Development With Optical Coherence Tomography, Andre C Faubert, Irina V Larina, Shang Wang Jan 2023

Open-Source, Highly Efficient, Post-Acquisition Synchronization For 4d Dual-Contrast Imaging Of The Mouse Embryonic Heart Over Development With Optical Coherence Tomography, Andre C Faubert, Irina V Larina, Shang Wang

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Dynamic imaging of the beating embryonic heart in 3D is critical for understanding cardiac development and defects. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) plays an important role in embryonic heart imaging with its unique imaging scale and label-free contrasts. In particular, 4D (3D + time) OCT imaging enabled biomechanical analysis of the developing heart in various animal models. While ultrafast OCT systems allow for direct volumetric imaging of the beating heart, the imaging speed remains limited, leading to an image quality inferior to that produced by post-acquisition synchronization. As OCT systems become increasingly available to a wide range of biomedical researchers, a …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to place an unprecedented strain on the US healthcare system, and primary care is no exception. Primary care services have shifted toward a team-based approach for delivering care in the last decade. COVID-19 placed extraordinary stress on primary care teams at the forefront of the pandemic response efforts. The current work applies the science of effective teams to examine the impact of COVID-19-a crisis or adverse event-on primary care team resilience.

METHODS: Little empirical research has been done testing the theory of team resilience during an extremely adverse crisis event in an applied team setting. …

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) and other neuromodulatory techniques are being increasingly utilized to treat refractory neurologic and psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: /Hypothesis: To better understand the circuit-level pathophysiology of treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and treat the network-level dysfunction inherent to this challenging disorder, we adopted an approach of inpatient intracranial monitoring borrowed from the epilepsy surgery field.

METHODS: We implanted 3 patients with 4 DBS leads (bilateral pair in both the ventral capsule/ventral striatum and subcallosal cingulate) and 10 stereo-electroencephalography (sEEG) electrodes targeting depression-relevant network regions. For surgical planning, we used an interactive, holographic visualization platform to appreciate the 3D anatomy …

INTRODUCTION: Surgical resection remains the first-line treatment for gliomas. Several fluorescent dyes are currently in use to augment intraoperative tumor visualization, but information on their comparative effectiveness is lacking. We performed systematic assessment of fluorescein sodium (FNa), 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), and indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence in various glioma models using advanced fluorescence imaging techniques.

METHODS: Four glioma models were used: GL261 (high-grade model), GB3 (low-grade model), and an

RESULTS: Our systematic analysis showed that wide-field imaging of highly malignant gliomas is equally efficient with 5-ALA, FNa, and ICG, although FNa is associated with more false-positive staining of …

The Monster-As-Slayer In Blade (1998): Blade And Posthuman Identity, Cassandra Pennings Jan 2023

The Monster-As-Slayer In Blade (1998): Blade And Posthuman Identity, Cassandra Pennings

English

Blade (1998) features an African American half-vampire whose goals seem contradictory: save the humans that would fear and hate him. A new character trope, the monster-as-slayer, is introduced in the movie’s eponymous hero, Blade, the half-vampire half-human private eye. Via this trope, the movie explores contradictions in its hero’s identity and motivations, leaving audiences in suspense throughout the film. Although there are examples of the monster-as-slayer in other media, Blade seems to begin this trend for modern film by combining classic elements of the vampire with new science fiction approaches. The result is the creation of a show-stopping posthuman superhero …

Taking Persephone: The Rhetoric Of Consent In Rachel Smythe's Webtoon Lore Olympus (2018), Kaitlynn Toay Jan 2023

Taking Persephone: The Rhetoric Of Consent In Rachel Smythe's Webtoon Lore Olympus (2018), Kaitlynn Toay

English

Lore Olympus is a webtoon that reimagines the taking of Persephone in an animated, comic style. In this paper, I discuss the rhetoric of consent through a visual analysis using the intersecting fields of classical reception, feminist rhetoric, and digital humanities. I use two versions of the taking of Persephone for my analysis: Ovid’s Metamorphoses and “The Homeric Hymn to Demeter.” My analysis is split into two parts, with the first being a visual analysis of 4 panels of the webtoon, focusing on how each depicts the rhetoric of consent. The second part of my analysis is focused on the …

Off The Beaten Warpath: Native Representation And Themes In Chris Claremont’S X-Men, Michael James Bittner

English

“Off the Beaten Warpath”: Native Representation and Themes in Chris Claremont’s X-Men Chris Claremont, the long-time writer on several X-Men titles, used the opportunity to develop his own cast of original and highly diverse characters. Several of these new characters either were of Native heritage or became Native through the course of the narrative, and he created one of the first storylines focusing on Native themes, The Demon Bear Saga. The British-born Claremont uses Native themes throughout his tenure on the X-Men titles, sometimes adhering to, but often defying the conventions associated with Native American literature. Although not without some …

The Influence Of Personal Traits, Individual Behaviours And Population Health Determinants On The Epidemiology Of Facial Injury: Psychiatric Comorbidity, Substance Abuse, Sars Social Distancing Measures, Gary Russell Hoffman Jan 2023

The Influence Of Personal Traits, Individual Behaviours And Population Health Determinants On The Epidemiology Of Facial Injury: Psychiatric Comorbidity, Substance Abuse, Sars Social Distancing Measures, Gary Russell Hoffman

Theses

ABSTRACT Introduction Injury can be defined as an act or event that causes harm, hurt or damage. It occurs as a result of the transfer of energy to living tissue. The biological response to such an insult is inflammation and is based on the activation of immune competent cells in tandem with alterations in vascular permeability. The process is orchestrated at a subcellular level by the release of immunomodulatory molecular mediators. T

he bones of the skull and face are the key determinant of human appearance. They form the framework to which other tissues are attached. The variability of facial …

The Aesthetically Engaging City: The Role Of Beauty And Play In Urbanism And Human Fulfilment, Amy Roser Jan 2023

The Aesthetically Engaging City: The Role Of Beauty And Play In Urbanism And Human Fulfilment, Amy Roser

Theses

This thesis argues that cities can only become better attuned to the complex human need for identity, meaning, understanding, and self-expression when urban decision-makers better understand the nature and significance of aesthetic engagement. When we strive toward aesthetic goals in building and city planning, we then nurture, more fully, essential human activities and needs. This thesis argues that the aesthetic of the urban environment profoundly influences the thoughts, emotions, and behaviours of those who dwell there and is therefore inseparable from culture, everyday life, and the cultivation of human fulfilment. By doing so, this thesis reconceptualises architecture, the urban environment, …

Differential Regulation Of Skeletal Stem/Progenitor Cells In Distinct Skeletal Compartments, Jea Giezl Niedo Solidum, Youngjae Jeong, Francisco Heralde, Dongsu Park Jan 2023

Differential Regulation Of Skeletal Stem/Progenitor Cells In Distinct Skeletal Compartments, Jea Giezl Niedo Solidum, Youngjae Jeong, Francisco Heralde, Dongsu Park

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Skeletal stem/progenitor cells (SSPCs), characterized by self-renewal and multipotency, are essential for skeletal development, bone remodeling, and bone repair. These cells have traditionally been known to reside within the bone marrow, but recent studies have identified the presence of distinct SSPC populations in other skeletal compartments such as the growth plate, periosteum, and calvarial sutures. Differences in the cellular and matrix environment of distinct SSPC populations are believed to regulate their stemness and to direct their roles at different stages of development, homeostasis, and regeneration; differences in embryonic origin and adjacent tissue structures also affect SSPC regulation. As these SSPC …

Time To Heal: Trauma's Impact On Rape & Sexual Assault Statutes Of Limitations, Fredrick E. Vars, Jillian Miller Purdue Jan 2023

Time To Heal: Trauma's Impact On Rape & Sexual Assault Statutes Of Limitations, Fredrick E. Vars, Jillian Miller Purdue

Articles

Short statutes of limitations for sex crimes ask the impossible of many vic- tims: report the crime before they have recovered from the trauma. Perpetra- tors go free as a direct result of the injury they caused. Nearly a third of victims of rape and sexual assaulthave PTSD during their lifetimes. PTSD is associated with three symptoms pertinent to reporting a crime: avoidance cop- ing (avoidingdistressing thoughts, feelings, or reminders of the attack), disso- ciative amnesia (forgetting important or all aspects of the attack), and depression. These symptoms all affect a victim's psychological ability to report a crime before a …

Defamation With Bayesian Audiences, Yonathan A. Arbel, Murat C. Mungan Jan 2023

Defamation With Bayesian Audiences, Yonathan A. Arbel, Murat C. Mungan

Articles

How strictly should the law regulate false defamatory statements? We first show that the presence of judicial errors often puts defamation law on a Laffer curve: regulation that is too lax or too strict is inferior to moderate regulation. While moderate regulation is ideal, it is not always attainable because of practical and legal constraints. With these constraints, we consider a Bayesian audience that takes the strictness of defamation law into account when evaluating statements. The optimal standard is then taxer than is prescribed by standard models with naive audiences. These findings underscore the importance of accounting for audience effects …

The Credibility Effect: Defamation Law And Audiences, Yonathan A. Arbel Jan 2023

The Credibility Effect: Defamation Law And Audiences, Yonathan A. Arbel

Articles

What should be the legal response to false statements? In the context of defamation law, courts try to set a standard that balances the interests of speakers and their potential targets. This article empirically demonstrates an unappreciated effect of such decisions on third parties: a credibility effect. Using a series of lab experiments, I find that defamation law makes individuals more trusting of reports from various media. This credibility effect is desirable when the report is true but can lead to unintended consequences in the case of misinformation. In particular, the credibility effect is shown to cast a stigma on …

Crying Wolf: Neo-Patriots, Critical Race Theory, And The Constitutional Protection Of "Dangerous" Ideas, Bryan K. Fair Jan 2023

Crying Wolf: Neo-Patriots, Critical Race Theory, And The Constitutional Protection Of "Dangerous" Ideas, Bryan K. Fair

Articles

Most Americans do not realize that, notwithstanding the First Amendment's free speech guarantee, for most of our nation's history, judges sent men and women to prison for expressing ideas considered too "dangerous." It was not until the late 1960s that the Supreme Court rejected the clear and present danger doctrine, insisting that statutes banning speech must draw a distinction between advocacy of ideas and advocacy of imminent lawless action. The Court held that under that constitutional norm, the government could not send a Klansman to prison for expressing racist, anti-Semitic, or otherwise dangerous or offensive ideas. Since then, banning the …

Noncitizen Harboring And The Freedom Of Association, Shalini Bhargava Ray Jan 2023

Noncitizen Harboring And The Freedom Of Association, Shalini Bhargava Ray

Articles

The United States has long criminalized assistance to unauthorized migrants. It is a crime to smuggle, transport, harbor, or encourage unauthorized migrants to remain in the country, regardless of the reasons for such aid. In response to recent federal harboring prosecutions of humanitarians assisting migrants at the U.S.- Mexico border, scholars and advocates have shown tremendous interest in a defense to liability under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and the First Amendment's Free Speech Clause. But a comparative analysis of harboring law reveals that some foreign jurisdictions conceptualize harboring law and defenses to liability in terms of citizen-migrant associations rather …

The Public Voice Of The Defender, Russell M. Gold, Kay L. Levine Jan 2023

The Public Voice Of The Defender, Russell M. Gold, Kay L. Levine

Articles

For decades police and prosecutors have controlled the public narrative about criminal law. The news landscape features salacious stories of violent crimes while ignoring the more mundane but far more prevalent minor cases that clog the court dockets. Defenders, faced with overwhelming caseloads and fear that speaking out may harm their clients, have largely ceded the opportunity to offer a counternarrative based on what they see every day. Defenders tell each other about the overuse of pretrial detention, intensive pressure to plead guilty, overzealous prosecutors, cycles of violence, and rampant constitutional violations-all of which inflict severe harm on defendants and …

From Cannabis To Crypto: Federal Reserve Discretion In Payments, Julie Andersen Hill Jan 2023

From Cannabis To Crypto: Federal Reserve Discretion In Payments, Julie Andersen Hill

Articles

From its inception, the Federal Reserve has operated payment systems that let banks move money for their customers. Checks, wire transfers, and electronic consumer payments all happen thanks to the Federal Reserve. Congress by statute specified which banks get access to the Fed's payment services. For more than a century, the Federal Reserve provided services to all legally eligible banks. But when the Federal Reserve received requests for payments access from a cannabis-focused credit union and a cryptocurrency custody bank (both of whom are legally eligible), it denied them. The Fed also issued sweeping guidelines claiming discretion to conduct risk …

Opening A Federal Reserve Account, Julie Andersen Hill Jan 2023

Opening A Federal Reserve Account, Julie Andersen Hill

Articles

To open bank accounts, new customers provide personal information and make a deposit. Within a few minutes (or perhaps a few days), new customers get access to payment services. For many years, the process financial institutions used to open accounts at FederalReserve Banks was similar. Eligible banks filled out a one-page form and within a week received an account allowing them access to the FederalReserve's payment systems. Recently, however, Federal Reserve Banks have spent years considering account requests from novel banks.

This Article examines the Federal Reserve's process for evaluating requests for accounts. Using interviews, court documents, and other sources, …

At The Nexus Of Antitrust & Consumer Protection, Luke Herrine Jan 2023

At The Nexus Of Antitrust & Consumer Protection, Luke Herrine

Articles

This Essay uses Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act to examine the theoretical and practical relationship between antitrust and consumer protection law. It argues that, since roughly 1980, there has been a hegemonic "neoliberal"framework, one that has in recent years been challenged by an emerging "moral economy" framework. The neoliberal framework conceptualizes antitrust as preventing firms from conspiring to throttle output, with a focus primarily on consumers' interests in low prices, and consumer protection as making consumers informed, rational, and able to switch between competitors with relatively low cost. The moral economy framework conceptualizes both areas of law …
