Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda: How Virginia’S Everchanging Politics Creates (Missed) Opportunities For Major Policy Decisions, Carlos Hopkins, Abigail Thompson
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Benjamin Franklin may have been discussing the new United States
Constitution when he penned this note to his friend, French scientist Jean-
Baptiste Le Roy, but he could easily have been referring to politics in
Virginia. Virginia House of Delegates members and members of the
Congressional House of Representatives serve two-year terms. Members of
the Virginia Senate serve four-year terms. United States Senators serve sixyear
terms. And the Governor, Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General
all serve four-year terms with only the Governor constitutionally limited to a
single four-year term. With all of these terms being staggered across the
various offices, …

Family Time: A Selection Of Bills From The Virginia 2023 Legislative Session Relating To Family, Intimate Partner Violence, And Child Welfare, Valerie L'Herrou
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
In 2023, the Commonwealth of Virginia was forced to operate without a
finalized state budget following the adjournment of the regular session of its
legislative body. The Commonwealth waited (luckily without bated breath)
for its “caboose” budget for the 2023–2024 budget cycle for nearly six
months after the General Assembly adjourned sine die, which it did on its
normal date for a “short” (odd-numbered) year on February 25, 2023.
However, most other actions taken by the Virginia General Assembly during
its 2023 session did go into effect on July 1, 2023, as usual. These include a
number of bills that …

The Organizational Outcomes Of Supervision In Settings Addressing Violence Against Women: A Scoping Review, Margaret Janse Van Rensburg, Maria Peddle, Karen Sewell, Claire Mcmenemy, Heather Macdonald
The Organizational Outcomes Of Supervision In Settings Addressing Violence Against Women: A Scoping Review, Margaret Janse Van Rensburg, Maria Peddle, Karen Sewell, Claire Mcmenemy, Heather Macdonald
Faculty and Staff Publications
Violence against women (VAW) is a prevailing social issue which requires human service organizations to provide a range of services to survivors. Workplace-based supervision in settings that seek to address VAW is an essential component of quality service. This scoping review of seven studies maps the available evidence of supervision in settings that seek to address VAW. Research studies were identified through sub-sampling literature identified in a scoping review on the organizational outcomes of supervision in the human services summarizing the evidence published between 2011 and 2022 including all articles which specifying a VAW setting. Guided by scoping review methodology, …

A History Of The Scottish P.E.N. Organization, Part 1: 1927-1949, Helen Stoddart
Studies in Scottish Literature
The first article in a two-part series charting the history of Scottish PEN, from its founding in 1927, through political struggles in the 1930s, and at the international congress in Edinburgh in 1934, over issues of intellectual freedom and the rise of Hitler, till the need to reestablish the organization after World War II, exploring Scottish PEN's relationship to the 20th century Scottish Renaissance movement, and examining the roles in Scottish PEN of H.J.C. Grierson, C.M. Grieve (Hugh MacDiarmid), Helen Cruikshank, William Power, Willa and Edwin Muir, and many others.
Liz Lochhead And The Fairies: Context And Influence In Grimm Sisters And Dreaming Frankenstein, William Donaldson
Liz Lochhead And The Fairies: Context And Influence In Grimm Sisters And Dreaming Frankenstein, William Donaldson
Studies in Scottish Literature
Examines the Scottish poet Liz Lochhead's period of North American travel and her response to American second-wave feminist poetics, particularly to the anthology No More Masks! (1973) and the poetry of Adrienne Rich and Anne Sexton, the treatment of myth by J.G. Frazer and Robert Graves, and the perspective on Scottish fairy tales offered by folklorists, to explore Lochhead's creative reworking of both fairy tale and classical myth in her collections Grimm Sisters (1981) and Dreaming Frankenstein (1984).

“They Act Like We Are Going To Heaven”: Pre-Arrival Information Experiences, Information Crafting And Settlement Of Immigrants In Canada, Nafiz Z. Shuva
Publications and Research
Purpose
Although there is a growing body of work on immigrants' information behavior, little is known about the pre-arrival information experiences of immigrants who consult formal information sources such as immigration agents. Drawn from a larger study on the information behavior of immigrants, this paper mainly reports the semi-structured interview findings on the pre-arrival information experiences of Bangladeshi immigrants who used formal information sources with discussion on how that affected their post-arrival settlement into Canada.
Design/methodology/approach
The study used a mixed method approach with semi-structured interviews (n = 60) and surveys (n = 205) with participants who arrived in Canada …
Variables Affecting The Extraction Of Antioxidants In Cold And Hot Brew Coffee: A Review, Brian Yust, Frank Wilkinson, Niny Rao
Variables Affecting The Extraction Of Antioxidants In Cold And Hot Brew Coffee: A Review, Brian Yust, Frank Wilkinson, Niny Rao
College of Life Sciences Faculty Papers
Coffee beans are a readily available, abundant source of antioxidants used worldwide. With the increasing interest in and consumption of coffee beverages globally, research into the production, preparation, and chemical profile of coffee has also increased in recent years. A wide range of variables such as roasting temperature, coffee grind size, brewing temperature, and brewing duration can have a significant impact on the extractable antioxidant content of coffee products. While there is no single standard method for measuring all of the antioxidants found in coffee, multiple methods which introduce the coffee product to a target molecule or reagent can be …

Are Human-Like Robots Trusted Like Humans? An Investigation Into The Effect Of Anthropomorphism On Trust In Robots Measured By Expected Value As Reflected By Feedback Related Negativity And P300, Lucy Olivia Wilson
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Robots are becoming more prevalently used in industry and society. However, in order to ensure effective use of the trust, must be calibrated correctly. Anthropomorphism is one factors which is important in trust in robots (Hancock et al., 2011). Questionnaires and investment games have been used to investigate the impact of anthropomorphism on trust, however, these methods have led to disparate findings. Neurophysiological methods have also been used as an implicit measure of trust. Feedback related negativity (FRN) and P300 are event related potential (ERP) components which have been associated with processes involved in trust such as outcome evaluation. This …
Diversity And Bioactive Potential Of Leaf-, And Root Sediment-Associated Bacteria From Zostera Marina In The Yealm Estuary, Southwest England, Eva Capps
The Plymouth Student Scientist
Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among human pathogenic bacteria demands urgent efforts to uncover novel natural products for developing new antibiotic drugs. Since terrestrial sources of natural products are overmined, attention in biodiscovery is shifting towards marine microbial ecosystems which are subject to unique environmental stressors. Resulting metabolic adaptations provide potential for potent antibacterial compounds. Thus, the microbiomes of seagrass components in Zostera marina, and the activity of culturable isolates against human pathogens, were explored in this study. The sample site used was in the Yealm Estuary, Southwest England, a location previously unexplored in this context. Seagrass leaves at 20cm and …
