Motivators And Barriers To Adoption Of Plant-Based Meat & Dairy Alternatives– A Comparison Of A Blue Zone And Disadvantaged Communities, Anastasia Tiznado, Maggie Taylor
Loma Linda University Research Reports
Introduction:
Blue Zones are geographical locations where there are low rates of chronic disease diagnosis, risks and mortalities, and people living in these communities live longer than average life spans. Individuals living in the Blue Zone of Loma Linda eat predominantly plant-based diets that incorporate meat and dairy alternatives. These products have been shown to provide health, environmental and affordability benefits. With respect to health, a plant-based diet is effective at preventing, treating and reversing diseases, including heart disease which is the number one killer in the US. In recent years, plant-based diets have gained a wide acceptance beyond the …

Loma Linda University Research Reports
Depression, anxiety, stress, and poor sleep quality are mental health conditions contributing to the burden of healthcare and society world-wide. Evidence has shown that nutrients and bioactive properties in seeds have been beneficial for mental health conditions in animal studies. This study aims to determine if there are beneficial effects of pepitas (pumpkin seeds) in humans.
Characterisation And Choice Of Law For Knowing Receipt, Adeline Chong
Characterisation And Choice Of Law For Knowing Receipt, Adeline Chong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Knowing receipt requires the satisfaction of disparate elements under English domestic law. Its characterisation under domestic law is also unsettled. These in turn affect the issues of characterisation and choice of law at the private international law level as knowing receipt sits at the intersection of the laws of equity, restitution, wrongs and property. This paper argues that under the common law, knowing receipt ought to be considered as sui generis for choice of law purposes and governed by the law of closest connection to the claim. Where the Rome II Regulation applies, knowing receipt fits better within the tort …
Personal Service Companies And The Tax Avoidance Surcharge In Singapore, Vincent Ooi, Ben Chester Cheong
Personal Service Companies And The Tax Avoidance Surcharge In Singapore, Vincent Ooi, Ben Chester Cheong
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Incorporation of personal service companies provide tax and non-tax advantages. With the introduction of a tax avoidance surcharge in Singapore, incorporation for non-tax advantages risks additional “tax costs” if challenged by the revenue authorities, introducing uncertainty and litigation costs. Instead of relying on a GAAR, targeted measures should restrict tax advantages to the first company incorporated by each individual taxpayer.

The family of ∼60 clustered protocadherins (Pcdhs) are cell adhesion molecules encoded by a genomic locus that regulates expression of distinct combinations of isoforms in individual neurons resulting in what is thought to be a neural surface “barcode” which mediates same-cell interactions of dendrites, as well as interactions with other cells in the environment. Pcdh mediated same-cell dendrite interactions were shown to result in avoidance while interactions between different cells through Pcdhs, such as between neurons and astrocytes, appear to be stable. The cell biological mechanism of the consequences of Pcdh based adhesion is not well understood although various signaling …

Fluorination Of Rubisco-Mimetic Co2 Capture Systems. Theoretical And Experimental Studies Of Ammonium Ion Acidity Depression And Carbamylation, Brian Michael Jameson
Doctoral Dissertations
"RuBisCO-inspired CO2 capture and release (CCR) systems featuring amines have been developed for the purpose of reversable CO2 capture from air. The enzyme active site consists of the tetrapeptide sequence Lys-Asp-Asp-Glu. The Lys sidechain amine undergoes carbamylation and an Mg2+ cation stabilizes the resulting carbamate. The Na-acyl-lysinyl-aspratyl-aspartyl-glutamide (Lys-Asp-Asp-Glu, KDDE) peptide featured maximum capture at pH ≈ 10; a pH region too high for Mg2+ ions to remain in solution. This work aims to achieve pKa depression by introducing fluorine in the proximity of the lysine’s sidechain amine. A comparative analysis was made of butylamine, …

Current sorbents investigated for light olefin/paraffin separation usually suffer from low selectivity. Besides, multicomponent analysis of this important separation is usually overlooked in the literature. To enhance the separation efficiency of zeolite 13X, we developed a series of Fe2O3/13X composite sorbents and assessed their separation performance using binary, ternary, and multicomponent gas mixtures of C2H4, C2H6, CH4, and H2. In these composites, nano- and micro Fe2O3 particles (NPs and MPs) with varied loadings were used, while Fe was also ion-exchanged into …

The nitrogen dioxide (NO2) radical is composed of the two most abundant elements in the atmosphere, where it can be formed in a variety of ways including combustion, detonation of energetic materials, and lightning. Relevant also to smog and ozone cycles, together these processes span a wide range of temperatures. Remarkably, high-resolution NO2 electronic absorption spectra have only been reported in a narrow range below about 300 K. Previously, we reported [ J. Phys. Chem. A 2021, 125, 5519−5533 ] the construction of quasi-diabatic potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the lowest four electronic states (X̃, Ã, B̃, …

The legal admissibility of scientific tools, such as dendrochemistry providing forensic evidence for criminal or civil cases, critically relies on the quality of fundamental and applied scientific research. the "Daubert" and "Frye" criteria that federal courts in the U.S.A use for determining legal admissibility requires publication of the scientific basis for the tool, and general acceptance by the scientific community. the field of dendroforensics is rapidly evolving, with new methods constantly being developed. in this manuscript we investigate how this dendrochemical evidence has been used successfully in the courtroom. the study of tree rings using physical anatomical and dendrochronological methods …

The Demands Of Displacement, The Micro-Aggressions Of Multiculturalism: Performing An Idea Of "Indianness" In Singapore, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper explores the ways in which state-defined discourses of multiculturalism can unintentionally create a framework through which micro-aggressions are enacted against those interpreted as "other". These definitions cascade down from the state to majority and then minority ethno-national groups, who leverage positions of relative dominance to establish the terms of acceptance and integration into society. By negotiating these terms, ethnicity becomes a performative construct through which difference is asserted and reified. We illustrate these ideas through an empirical analysis of Singapore's minority Indian community, and how Singaporean Indians perform an idea of "Indianness" in response to their Singaporean Chinese …

Algorithm's Cradle: Commemorating Al-Khwarizmi In The Soviet History Of Mathematics And Cold War Computer Science, Ksenia Tatarchenko
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This chapter investigates the origin narratives and commemoration practices that came hand in hand with the growing cultural authority of the algorithm after World War II, culminating in celebrations in honor of the 1,200th anniversary of the medieval scholar Abu MODIFIER LETTER LEFT HALF RINGAdallah Muhammad Ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. I first show how al-Khwarizmi's legacy was claimed by Soviet historians of mathematics aiming to construct a history inspired by dialectical materialism, a goal that eventually led to arguments about the distinct, algorithmic character of mathematics in the East. Next, I study how these ideas were appropriated by the international community …

Hawker foods characterize urban Asia, with similarities and differences across cities that forge both cultural commonalities and distinctions. From the itinerant to the fixed location, from the temporary sites to the purpose-built, hawker foods are served in informal settings, with varying degrees of tradition and innovation, hygiene and squalidness, local authenticity and globalized influence. In the side-streets of Beijing where local delicacies such as scorpion are served, to the abundant food cart vendors on Bangkok streets, to the warung (small, typically family-owned eateries) in Surabaya, and the carefully planned and designed hawker centres in Singapore, hawker culture is a distinctive …

Hybrid working strategies have become, and will continue to be, the norm for many offices. This raises two considerations: newly unoccupied spaces needlessly consume energy, and the occupied spaces need to be effectively used to facilitate meaningful interactions and create a positive, sustainable work culture. This work aims to determine when spontaneous, collaborative interactions occur within the building and the environmental factors that facilitate such interactions. This study uses smartwatch-based micro-surveys using the Cozie platform to identify the occurrence of and spatially place interactions while categorizing them as a collaboration or distraction. This method uniquely circumvents pitfalls associated with surveying …

Collecting feedback from people in indoor and outdoor environments is traditionally challenging and complex to achieve in a reliable, longitudinal, and non-intrusive way. This paper introduces Cozie Apple, an open-source mobile and smartwatch application for iOS devices. This platform allows people to complete a watch-based micro-survey and provide real-time feedback about environmental conditions via their Apple Watch. It leverages the inbuilt sensors of the smartwatch to collect physiological (e.g., heart rate, activity) and environmental (sound level) data. This paper outlines data collected from 48 research participants who used the platform to report perceptions of urban-scale environmental comfort (noise and thermal) …

The widespread availability of open datasets in urban areas is transforming how urban energy systems are planned, simulated, and visualized. Urban energy models, however, require an understanding of urban dwellers, as their activities create the demands for energy in buildings. In this paper, we explore using campus-scale Wi-Fi data to identify typical occupant activity patterns as an input to an agent-based model of building occupants at the district scale. The data is taken from a Singaporean university’s Wi-Fi network at high resolution. Each record comprises a timestamp, a device identifier, the location of the device within the campus, and the …

The building sector plays a crucial role in the worldwide decarbonization effort, accounting for significant portions of energy consumption and environmental effects. However, the scarcity of open data sources is a continuous challenge for built environment researchers and practitioners. Although several efforts have been made to consolidate existing open datasets, no database currently offers a comprehensive collection of building data types with all subcategories and time granularities (e.g., year, month, and sub-hour). This paper presents the Building Data Genome Directory, an open data-sharing platform serving as a one-stop shop for the data necessary for vital categories of building energy research. …

International Investment Law And Climate Justice: The Search For A Just Green Investment Order, Olabisi D. Akinkugbe, Adebayo Majekolagbe
Fordham International Law Journal
Efforts are underway to craft responses to the climate crisis within the international investment order. This Article highlights international investment law (“IIL”) and international climate law (“ICL”) as two basic governance contexts within which investment- related responses to climate change are being designed. There is, however, a multilevel—normative and institutional—dissonance between both regimes that makes for an asymmetric integration of the regimes at best, or worse still, the escalation of the injustices which have characterized both. While similar in their recognition of international investment as an important tool for responding to climate change, assumptions and approaches under both regimes are …
Border Brutalism, Ernesto Hernández-López
Border Brutalism, Ernesto Hernández-López
Fordham International Law Journal
Concepts like freedom and liberty motivate Americans on the global stage. This has racial implications past and present. Exploring these arguments, this Essay: (1) reviews Greg Grandin’s The End of the Myth: From the Frontier to the Border Wall in the Mind of America and (2) proposes a framework to identify law’s place in these motivations. The End of the Myth argues that frontier myths inspired expansion west and then overseas. While this was seen as innately positive, it also downplayed racism. Now, the idea of the border drives Americans and motivates their leaders. With border brutalism policies, a new …

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has exposed the current ESG approach’s weakness in many ways, most noticeably in the form of real-world consequences of negative screening strategies against defense and energy sectors. This Note attributes this weakness to a cacophony of risk and impact—a conceptual conflation between the two concepts in the relatively nascent ESG space. However, this Note finds that, even after resolving this cacophony, ESG investing still has significant problems that challenge its efficacy: (1) insufficient fairness and reasonableness of ESG ratings; (2) its uncertain future viability as an effective investment methodology under unfavorable economic conditions; and (3) its …

Echoes Of The Zoning: Confronting Legal Realism In The Arguments For Reparations From The Atlantic Slave Trade And Modern-Day Human Trafficking, Glenys P. Spence
Fordham International Law Journal
This Article is based on the premise that modern day human trafficking, like the transatlantic slave trade, violates jus cogens norms, and thus the practice was and still is a violation of US laws under customary international law. The analysis will examine the laws that were applied to chattel slavery in England and her colonies through the lens of some seminal slavery cases to unearth the tyranny of interpretation in human trafficking reparations and liability claims under the current Supreme Court jurisprudence and the Alien Tort Statute (“ATS”). The featured cases will reveal that the same philosophies undergirding the jurisprudence …

The Role Of International Law In Targeted Killings: From The Bush Administration To The Biden Administration, Talia Abed
Fordham International Law Journal
Since the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, the United States has been engaged in a global war to defeat terrorism, i.e., the war on terror. As part of this conflict, the US government conducts targeted killing operations, in which it singles out and kills certain individuals it deems a threat to civilian lives. There are several US statutes that govern the use of lethal force, both generally and in the specific context of targeting terrorists. Additionally, there is a wide body of international laws that govern this form of extrajudicial killing. It is questionable, however, whether the …

Mistaken Detonation: International And Domestic Legal Principles Applicable To Address The Accidental Or Unintended Use Of Nuclear Weapons, Emma Hazeltine
Fordham International Law Journal
Accidental or unintended detonation of nuclear weapons is a virtually unregulated area of international law. Although the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the Treaty on the Non- Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons seek to manage the risks of intentional nuclear use, these Treaties are silent on how the international community would assign legal liability for inadvertent detonations. This Note seeks to address this question by surveying and discussing how existing mechanisms of international and US domestic law could fill this legal void. Specifically, it analyzes the relevancy, benefits, and drawbacks of applying: international criminal law; international human rights …

Central nervous system (CNS) glia, including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes, play prominent roles in traumatic injury and degenerative disorders. Due to their importance, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are being developed to modulate CNS glia in order to improve outcomes in traumatic injury and disease. While many of these APIs show promise in vitro, the majority of APIs that are systemically delivered show little penetration through the blood–brain barrier (BBB) or blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB) and into the CNS, rendering them ineffective. Novel nanomaterials are being developed to deliver APIs into the CNS to modulate glial responses and improve outcomes in …

Osteoarthritis (OA) is common in zoo Asian (Elephas maximus) and African (Loxodonta africana) elephants. This study investigated the relationship between confirmed or suspected OA with ovarian cyclicity, gonadotropins, progestagens, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), and collagen type I (CTX-I) in zoo elephants. In Asian elephants, odds of having confirmed or suspected OA decreased with cycling (OR = 0.22, P = 0.016; OR = 0.29, P = 0.020, respectively), however, not when adjusted for age (odds ratio [OR] = 0.31, P = 0.112; OR = 0.58, P = 0.369, respectively). In African elephants, none of …

Mendelian randomization (MR) has become a common tool used in epidemiological studies. However, when confounding variables are correlated with the instrumental variable (in this case, a genetic/variant/marker), the estimation can remain biased even with MR. We propose conditioning on parental mating types (a function of parental genotypes) in MR to eliminate the need for one set of assumptions, thereby plausibly reducing such bias. We illustrate a situation in which the instrumental variable and confounding variables are correlated using two unlinked diallelic genetic loci: one, an instrumental variable and the other, a confounding variable. Assortative mating or population admixture can create …
