BACKGROUND: Lung function is routinely assessed prior to surgical resection for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Further assessment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) using inhaled COPD medications to determine disease severity, a readily available metric of disease burden, may predict postoperative outcomes and overall survival (OS) in lung cancer patients undergoing surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated clinical stage I NSCLC patients receiving surgical treatment within the Veterans Health Administration from 2006-2016 to determine the relationship between number and type of inhaled COPD medications (short- and long-acting beta2-agonists, muscarinic antagonists, or corticosteroids prescribed within 1 year before surgery) and postoperative …

AIMS: Mutations in the DSP gene encoding desmoplakin, a constituent of the desmosomes at the intercalated discs (IDs), cause a phenotype that spans arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) and dilated cardiomyopathy. It is typically characterized by biventricular enlargement and dysfunction, myocardial fibrosis, cell death, and arrhythmias. The canonical wingless-related integration (cWNT)/β-catenin pathway is implicated in the pathogenesis of ACM. The β-catenin is an indispensable co-transcriptional regulator of the cWNT pathway and a member of the IDs. We genetically inactivated or activated β-catenin to determine its role in the pathogenesis of desmoplakin cardiomyopathy.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The Dsp gene was conditionally deleted in …

Dual Mode Control Of An Inverted Pendulum: Design, Analysis And Experimental Evaluation, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo, Ian Howard
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
We present an inverted pendulum design using readily available V-slot rail components and 3D printing to construct custom parts. To enable the examination of different pendulum characteristics, we constructed three pendulum poles of different lengths. We implemented a brake mechanism to modify sliding friction resistance and built a paddle that can be attached to the ends of the pendulum poles. A testing rig was also developed to consistently apply disturbances by tapping the pendulum pole, characterizing balancing performance. We perform a comprehensive analysis of the behavior and control of the pendulum. This begins by considering its dynamics, including the nonlinear …

Molecular Docking Analysis Of Acanthus Ilicifolius Compounds Toward Cul4b-Ddb1-Ahr-Erα Complex Protein For Antiosteoporosis Discovery, Binar Asrining Dhiani, Sarmoko Sarmoko, Retno Wahyuningrum, Akbar Yulianto
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Osteoporosis represents a significant global public health issue, particularly among the aging population. Its incidence reaches 18.3% of the total population, with the highest prevalence observed in elderly postmenopausal women. A key factor in osteoporosis is the decreased expression level of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα), attributed to its degradation by the ubiquitin ligase protein complex Cullin4B (CUL4B), DNA damage binding 1 (DDB1), and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), collectively known as CUL4BAhR. Acanthus ilicifolius L contains compounds exhibiting antiosteoporosis activity, primarily by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis via RANKL. However, no reports exist of antiosteoporosis agents that act by inhibiting ERα degradation via CUL4BAhR. …

A Study On The Influence Of Digital Finance On Bank Account Ownership Of Filipinos, Ian Carlo Antonio, Maire Carroline Magante
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Financial inclusion remains a recurring problem that various governments need to address. Despite digitalization, financial institutions struggle to make their products and services available to the public. The Philippines has among the weakest financial inclusion coverages, as shown by the minimal account penetration of the population. This study used the 2019 Financial Inclusion Survey (FIS), specifically mobile phone usage in financial transactions and other socioeconomic characteristics as determinants of financial inclusion measured by bank account ownership. The findings show that mobile phones, financial literacy, and urbanity remain as significant players in accessing financial products and services, but in varying degrees …

A Conceptual Framework For Understanding Lake Governance: Lake’S People, Development, Conservation, And Government, Bing Baltazar C. Brillo
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Governance’s concept is well-established, multifarious, and too considerable in meanings, indicators, and frameworks, making it distinct to different people and unappealing to apply in lakes. Under this, governance ought to be reductionist-parsimony to be manageable and straightforward in refocusing the primary reference—lake governance. Lake governance’s concept is rarely utilized in scholarly literature nor acknowledged in the lake’s discourse. To ameliorate, the article intends to be a discourse—elucidate, understand, and contribute to lake governance’s analytical framework, respectively, the constituent’s interrelationship among the lake’s people, development, conservation, and the government, its most influential compartment. With this, lake governance asserts (a) development and …

Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan
The resolution of land and natural resource disputes through litigation encounters a complex set of issues, including protracted and convoluted processes, high costs, overlapping judgments for the same dispute object, and difficulties in executing verdicts. These unresolved issues can be partly attributed to the characteristics of judicial institutions in Indonesia, where constraints within the Constitution on the formulation of judicial authority for the establishment of an agrarian judiciary are a contributing factor. The aforementioned scenario is also associated with the nature of agrarian disputes, encompassing both public and private legal domains, thereby necessitating the resolution of such conflicts through specific …
