The Effects Of Sport Participation On Student-Athletes’ And Non-Athlete Students’ Social Life And Identity, Steve Chen, Shonna Snyder, Monica Magner
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
This study examined perceived athletic identity, sport commitment, and the effect of sport participation to identify the impact of athletic participation on college students. This study surveyed 163 student-athletes (59%) and 112 non-athlete students (41%) from a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division-I affiliated institution (males = 172, 62.5%; females = 103, 37.5%). The survey questionnaire was developed and modified from four well-established instruments, the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, the Sport Commitment Model, the Life Roles Inventory-Values Scales, and Athletic Involvement on the Social Life. The data collection process was initiated and completed in the 2008 spring semester. Seven sub-factors: Personal …
Sport And Stigma: College Football Recruiting And Institutional Identity Of Ole Miss, Kristi M. Fondren
Sport And Stigma: College Football Recruiting And Institutional Identity Of Ole Miss, Kristi M. Fondren
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The identity and history of the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) has been the subject of immense political discussion and popular debate. Using a conceptual and analytical framework guided by stigma and stigma management, this study examines the debate through the lens of football recruiting at Ole Miss. Qualitative interviews with prominent football players and program administrators (i.e. coaches, recruiters) at Ole Miss, as well as prominent football players at Mississippi State University, highlight a number of negative recruiting strategies used by coaches from competing schools to portray Ole Miss in an unfavorable light when interacting with prospective student-athletes. In …
Reevaluating Prestige: The Influence Of History On The Decision To Reclassify To Division I: A Case Study, Anthony Weaver
Reevaluating Prestige: The Influence Of History On The Decision To Reclassify To Division I: A Case Study, Anthony Weaver
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an institution’s past on the administrative decision to reclassify the institution’s athletic department to NCAA Division I. The study focused on the environment that existed prior to the reclassification and the administrative rationale used to justify the move. Two universities, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and Elon University, were chosen for case study analysis. Data were collected and analyzed using case study methodologies and an adapted model of Pettigrew’s contextualist approach. Documents, archival records, semi-structured interviews, participant observations, physical artifacts, and direct observations from each institution were …
The Dilemma Of The Senior Woman Administrator Role In Intercollegiate Athletics, Jennifer Hoffman
The Dilemma Of The Senior Woman Administrator Role In Intercollegiate Athletics, Jennifer Hoffman
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
All National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institutions designate the highest-ranking woman in athletic administration the senior woman administrator (SWA). This role is “intended to encourage and promote the involvement” of women in decision-making, enhance the representation women’s experiences and perspectives, and support women’s interests in intercollegiate athletics (NCAA, n.d. [a]). However, previous research reveals inconsistency in the tasks and responsibilities associated with the SWA role. Furthermore, it is not well established if this role is a mechanism to advance women to leadership roles or a terminal position (Hatfield, 2009). To better understand the influence of the SWA role on …
Stakeholder Perceptions Of An Athletic Program’S Reclassification From Ncaa Division Ii To Ncaa Division I (Fcs) Membership: A Case Study, Brendan Dwyer, Terry Eddy, Cody Harvard, Lori Braa
Stakeholder Perceptions Of An Athletic Program’S Reclassification From Ncaa Division Ii To Ncaa Division I (Fcs) Membership: A Case Study, Brendan Dwyer, Terry Eddy, Cody Harvard, Lori Braa
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
At the highest level of intercollegiate athletics, successful programs have the potential to enhance public perception, increase visibility, and enrich prestige for an institution (Beyer & Hannah, 2000; Goff, 2000). Due to these potential benefits, university officials are willing to invest tremendous amounts of energy and capital, in the form of a division reclassification, just for the opportunity to compete at this level. This transition, however, is a complex process with substantial consequences for a university and its stakeholders. Employing a mixed methodology, this case study investigated the previous management decisions and current stakeholder perceptions of an institution’s recent reclassification …
The Rise And Impact Of High Profile Spectator Sports On American Higher Education, Kimberly L. Martin, Keith Christy
The Rise And Impact Of High Profile Spectator Sports On American Higher Education, Kimberly L. Martin, Keith Christy
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Intercollegiate athletics at colleges and universities have been referred to as “American higher education’s ‘peculiar institution.’ Their presence is pervasive, yet their proper balance with academics remains puzzling” (Thelin, 1994, p.1). Scandals such as the one at the University of Colorado at Boulder involving improper conduct of athletes and improper recruiting practices highlight the problems in athletic departments all over the country (Jacobsen, as cited in Umbach, Palmer, Kuh and Hannah, 2006). Organizations such as the Knight Commission, Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA), and the Drake Group dedicate much of their resources toward examining reform in intercollegiate athletics. This all …

2009 Bowl Championship Series Telecasts: Expressions Of Big-Time College- Sport’S Commercial Institutional Logics, Richard M. Southall, Crystal Southall, Brendan Dwyer
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is the preeminent National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) event. It consistently generates high television ratings and attracts millions of dollars of advertising spending. Given the limited analysis of the organizational conditions that frame these broadcasts’ production, this study examines the impact of influential actors on the representation process. Using a mixed-method approach, this paper investigates the production of 2009 BCS broadcasts, and examines the extent to which these broadcasts are consistent with college sport’s espoused educational mission. Through a critical examination of the dominant institutional logic that underpins their reproduction, this …
Clashing Models Of Commercial Sport In Higher Education: Implications For Reform And Scholarly Research, Allen Sack
Clashing Models Of Commercial Sport In Higher Education: Implications For Reform And Scholarly Research, Allen Sack
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
Big-time college sport has successfully weathered one wave of reform after another for over 100 years. Yet, passionate debates continue regarding the educational impact of highly commercialized sport in American universities. The major purpose of this study is to identify the issues and assumptions that divide reformers and reform groups. It also makes explicit the conceptual models—intellectual elitist, academic capitalist, and athletes rights—they use to interpret the reality of commercialized college sport. This study does not test the validity of each model. Rather it explores logical connections between these models and reform policies likely to be pursued by those who …
Punching A Ticket To The Big Dance: A Critical Analysis Of At-Large Selection Into The Ncaa Division I Men’S Basketball Tournament, Stephen L. Shapiro, Joris Drayer, Brendan Dwyer, Alan L. Morse
Punching A Ticket To The Big Dance: A Critical Analysis Of At-Large Selection Into The Ncaa Division I Men’S Basketball Tournament, Stephen L. Shapiro, Joris Drayer, Brendan Dwyer, Alan L. Morse
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament at-large selection process is a highly scrutinized system. A selection committee made up of ten members is asked to select teams based on guidelines set forth by the NCAA. However, committee members indicate that other factors are also considered. Due to the financial benefits associated with a tournament appearance, it is important to closely examine the committee’s decision making process in order to identify possible sources of bias, which may put some teams at a competitive disadvantage. The purpose of this study was to examine direct and indirect attributes of teams that finished …

Taking Science To The Streets: Participatory Research Approaches To Improve Environment, Health, And Quality Of Life In Urban Areas, Na'taki Osborne Jelks
Sustainability Seminar Series
Environmental justice communities, those disproportionately affected by pollutants, are simultaneously exposed to multiple environmental stressors and also experience social and cultural factors that may heighten their health risks in comparison to other communities. Availability of fine-grained, community-level data is limited to support said communities’ appeals for public health practice, planning, and policy changes. In Northwest Atlanta, Georgia’s Proctor Creek Watershed community residents (watershed researchers), academics, and non-profit organizations have leveraged local, community knowledge; community science methods; and participatory approaches to identify, document, and analyze the impacts of local environmental hazards and quality of life stressors. This highly collaborative and interdisciplinary …

Refereed Research - Learning From Subsistence Marketplaces And Beyond: A Cross-Sectoral Comparison In Benin, Paul Ingenbleek, Souleimane A. Adekambi, Hans C.M. Van Trijp
Subsistence Marketplaces
Subsistence Marketplaces publishes studies that study consumers, entrepreneurs, and marketplaces from a broad range of low income contexts in their own right, transcending the boundaries between sectors and disciplines to derive practically meaningful implications. This paper contributes to accomplishing the mission of the new journal by contextualizing market learning theory to subsistence marketplaces. More specifically, the study links two modes of market learning (exploration and exploitation) with producers’ livelihood performance. It hypothesizes that within subsistence marketplaces, producers benefit the most from exploration but to seize a market opportunity beyond the subsistence context, BoP producers should strengthen their exploitative learning processes. …
