"Loving You No Matter What You Do": Ai's Dramatic Monologues, 1970s Asian American Feminisms, And Reproductive Justice, Catherine Irwin
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
This essay makes visible the 1970s involvement of Asian American and Women of Color feminists in reproductive justice. Grounded in the Asian American feminist praxis of remembering, this essay analyzes how three dramatic monologues by the Asian American mixed-race poet Ai engage with the discourses of reproduce justice set forth by Asian American and Women of Color activists leading up to the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Using an Asian American feminist lens, this paper argues that the speakers in Ai’s monologues utilize these discourses circulating about abortion and women’s health care to construct images of the treatment of dispossessed …

Archiving “Sensitive” Social Media Data: ‘In Her Shoes’, A Case Study, Lorraine Grimes Dr, Kathryn Cassidy Dr, Murilo Dias, Clare Lanigan, Aileen O'Carroll Dr, Preetam Singhvi
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Social media play an increasingly significant role in activist and social movements around the globe. Archiving social media is a relatively new phenomenon and an area which needs greater clarity, understanding and uniformity. When it comes to archiving and cataloguing sensitive social media collections, such as personal abortion stories, the process is even more ambiguous. The campaign to repeal the Eighth Amendment (a constitutional ban on abortion) in Ireland saw many such stories shared through online media, particularly in the lead-up to the 2018 referendum. Using the ‘In Her Shoes: Women of the Eighth’ Facebook dataset as a case study, …

International Journal on Responsibility
This special issue of the International Journal on Responsibility (IJR) advances scholarship on the various ways responsibility infuses the roles of criminal justice agents. As the inaugural issue of my tenure as Editor-in-Chief, Volume 6 deepens our understanding of responsibility in the context of the criminal justice system, thereby fulfilling IJR’s aim and scope. Specifically, the articles highlight issues of responsibility within each component of the criminal justice system: police, courts, and corrections.

“Big Data” Revitalizing Librarianship: Impact On Librarians, Alice A. Bamigbola Dr.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Advanced technologies undeniably developed in the 4th Industrial Revolution era, and led to incessantly growing volumes of information daily. “Big Data” is simply information surplus due to the volume, velocity, variety, variability and veracity of the data that need to be processed to get value and better visualisation. Big Data helps libraries understand the ever-changing users’ needs, consequently reshaping their services and procedures. However, it offers several information challenges concerning its capturing, storage, searching, structuring, and visualization. This paper, explores the concept of Big Data in a library environment, how to introduce Big Data, its benefits in the library, roles …

Automatic Validation Of User-Contributed Content Using Learned Similarity Function, Hari Bhaskar S, Nikhil Shirish Ketkar
Defensive Publications Series
The quality of user-contributed content at online platforms can vary. Manual validation of such content for quality and relevance is difficult and not scalable. No current techniques utilize known high quality content to rank user-contributed content. This disclosure describes techniques for scalable automatic validation of user-contributed content (UCC) provided to an online platform. A similarity function is learned based on merchant media and known high-quality user submitted media. The similarity function is used to score new UCC media and determine whether the new UCC media is relevant and of sufficient quality to include on the platform. The techniques improve the …

Using Multi-Spectral Satellite Data For Mapping Bathymetry Of Bitter Lakes, Suez Canal, Asmaa H. Mohammed, Sarah S. Abdel-Hamid, Hozaifa S. Ibrahim, Esraa E. Abouelmaaty
Blue Economy
The Suez Canal runs through an important water body, the Bitter Lakes which are deepened regularly to suit passing by or parking vessels of different drafts. The bottom topographic is dynamically changing due to sedimentation by ships and water current movements that are usually impacting and requiring those continuing dredging processes performed by the Suez Canal Authority. Basically, studying the bottom dwellers of any lake requires bathymetric data which is very costly. Therefore, bathymetry maps can be derived from passive optical satellite sensors (multispectral). The present study used Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery to produce water depth of the Bitter …

Brain MRI volumes measuring brain atrophy have been associated with risks for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and related dementia. Inflammatory biomarkers associated with brain MRI volumes may provide insight into the neuroinflammation associated with these diseases. The study aim is to identify circulating inflammatory biomarkers associated with total and regional brain MRI volumes in the Framingham Heart Study Offspring cohort. Participants (N=662, 52% female, mean age 62 years) free of dementia and stroke at the time of blood draw and who had MRI measures within five years were profiled using the OLINK Proteomics inflammation panel. Pairwise cross-sectional associations between 68 biomarkers …

The Constitution's Blind Spots: A Discourse Analysis Of Marginalization Within The United States Constitution, Ellie Martel
Honors Program Theses and Projects
The United States Constitution begins with the words "We the People,” yet several groups of people were overlooked as it was being crafted. The alienated populace felt that the governing constitution should reflect people of all sexes, genders, races, and nationalities, given the diversity of this nation. Although it took time and effort, the abolitionist and women's rights movements contributed to the formulation of the amendments that would extend constitutional rights to underrepresented groups. The purpose of this thesis is to look deeper at the phrases used in texts to uncover feelings and common themes that presented themselves in speeches …

Examining Psychology Majors: Perceptions, Motivations, & Goals, Madison Wetherell
Honors Program Theses and Projects
While psychology is one of the United States’ most popular undergraduate majors, we face a shortage of mental health workers which has created a lack of access to quality care. A gap exists between students’ interest in psychology as an academic subject and their interest in mental health careers. Using quantitative survey data from psychology majors in a required orientational course, this study assessed why students major in psychology, their feelings about the psychology major, and their post-graduate plans. Many psychology majors reported wanting to help others, which was associated with wanting a psychology-related career. Students of color reported a …

The Inevitability Of Sin, Kevin Timpe
The Inevitability Of Sin, Kevin Timpe
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Part of the traditional Christian doctrine of sin is the claim that, due to the effects of original sin, acts of sin are inevitable. Of course, our reflection on sinful actions is shaped by how we think about human freedom and divine providence more broadly. Some have argued that libertarians have a difficult time accounting for the inevitability of sin. This paper uses David Lewis’s work on counterfactuals and possible worlds to give an account of how the inevitability of sin can be understood. It then shows how both theological determinism and Molinism can give an account of sin’s inevitability …

Immunosequencing Applications In Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma, Jenna Mandel, Laura Gleason, Daniel Joffe, Safiyyah Bhatti, Neda Nikbakht
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
Immunosequencing has emerged as a newer clinical test for assessment of T-cell clonality in the blood and skin of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) patients. Utilization of immunosequencing, also known as high-throughput sequencing of the T-cell receptor (HTS-TCR), enables identification and quantification of the precise genetic signature of dominant T-cell clones. Although immunosequencing is more sensitive than commonly used methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) paired with capillary electrophoresis or flow cytometry, it remains underutilized for CTCL management. Nonetheless, incorporation of HTS-TCR in clinical practice offers distinct advantages compared to other molecular analyses that may improve diagnostic evaluation, prognostication, and …

English-language mass-market romance novels written by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) writers and starring BIPOC protagonists are a small but important group. This article is a comparative analysis of how recent representations of diversity in this sub-set of the genre, specifically the character of the Black academic and the language of racial justice, compare with the first group of BIPOC novels that were published in 1984 (Sandra Kitt’s Adam and Eva and All Good Things as well as Barbara Stephens’s A Toast to Love). In Adrianna Herrera’s American Love Story (2019), Katrina Jackson’s Office Hours (2020), and …
The Unknown Consequences Of Place-Based Tax Incentives, Michelle D. Layser
The Unknown Consequences Of Place-Based Tax Incentives, Michelle D. Layser
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Nearly thirty years have passed since Prof. Ellen Aprill warned policymakers not to rely on tax incentives to fight urban poverty. At the time, federal and state governments were just beginning to embrace so-called place-based tax incentives, which are used to promote investment in low-income areas. Aprill was skeptical and expressed doubts about their capacity to change business behavior or to benefit low-income residents. Nevertheless, federal and state lawmakers charged forward, introducing new place-based tax incentive programs in the decades that followed. Today, tax incentives are a central part of most place-based policy initiatives. Yet, there is still a lot …
Nonprofits, Taxes, And Speech, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer
Nonprofits, Taxes, And Speech, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
Federal tax law is of two minds when it comes to speech by nonprofits. The tax benefits provided to nonprofits are justified in significant part because they provide nonprofits great discretion in choosing the specific ends and means to pursue, thereby promoting diversity and pluralism. But current law withholds some of these tax benefits if a nonprofit engages in certain types of political speech. Legislators have also repeatedly, if unsuccessfully, sought to expand these political speech restrictions in various ways. And some commentators have proposed denying tax benefits to groups engaged in other types of disfavored speech, including hate speech …
