Yolo And Lsh-Based Video Stream Analytics Landscape For Short-Term Traffic Density Surveillance At Road Networks, Lavanya K, Stuti Tiwari, Rahul Anand, Jude Hemanth

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The duty of monitoring traffic during rush hour is difficult due to the fact that modern roadways are getting more crowded every day. The automated solutions that have already been created in this area are ineffective at processing enormous amounts of data in a short amount of time, leading to ineffectiveness and inconsistent results. The YOLO (you only look once) and LSH (locality sensitive hashing) algorithms are combined with the Kafka architecture in this study to create a method for assessing traffic density in real-time scenarios. Our concept, which is specifically designed for vehicular networks, predicts the traffic density in …

Victor Hugo Was Right All Along: Les Misérables, The Tragedy Of A Punitive Parole System, And A Modern Path Forward, Sarah Gerwig

Mercer Law Review Symposium

Les Misérables, Victor Hugo’s tragic novel, was published over 160 years ago and yet it continues to capture imaginations and sympathies worldwide. It was made into an award-winning film over a decade ago. But before that, Les Misérables was one of the most popular Broadway musicals ever produced, having been viewed by over sixty million people, even beyond the viewership of other popular renditions in film and television. Despite (or perhaps because of) its heartbreaking themes, audiences sympathize with the main characters’ quest for redemption. How easy, in the story, to see the struggles and barriers Jean Valjean encounters—and …

The Status Of Women On Utah State Boards & Commissions: A 2023 Update, Susan R. Madsen, Natasha Birchard, Brooke Scheffler

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Research shows that organizations will increasingly thrive when both men and women hold leadership roles.1 Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, but also entities such as churches, state legislatures, city councils, state governments, and state and local boards and commissions. Studies have shown that there are numerous benefits to attracting, retaining, promoting, and empowering women within organizations and entities. More specifically, research demonstrates the need for the government—and democratic governance processes in general—to reflect gender diversity accurately within its constituency at all levels.2 Utah is no exception. In fact, in Utah (Code 67-1-11), since 1992, appointing authorities were …

Academic work is increasingly important to court rulings on the Second Amendment and firearms law more generally. This article highlights two recent trends in social science research that supplement the traditional focus on guns and physical harm. The first strand of research focuses on the changing ways that gun owners connect with firearms, with personal security, status, identity, and cultural markers being key reasons people offer for possessing firearms. The second strand focuses on broadening our understanding of the impact of guns on the public sphere beyond just physical safety. This research surfaces the ways that guns can create fear, …

Democracy Avoidance In Tax Lawmaking, Clinton G. Wallace Oct 2023

Democracy Avoidance In Tax Lawmaking, Clinton G. Wallace

Florida Tax Review

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was the most significant tax law in more than three decades, but the strategy for getting it enacted included a variety of maneuvers to avoid public scrutiny. As a result, many taxpayers did not know how they would be affected until they filed their own tax returns more than a year later. This Article identifies this lack of transparency as part of a persistent pathology of avoiding and constraining democratic inputs and responsiveness in U.S. federal tax lawmaking. Indeed, some scholars and policymakers have sought to channel tax lawmaking away from democratically grounded decisions …

The Puerto Rico Children Vulnerability Index, 2021, Jennifer Hinojosa, Laura Colon-Melendez, Jorge Soldevilla-Irizarry, Damayra I. Figueroa-Lazu

CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies

Recent natural hazards and resulting disasters in Puerto Rico have drawn attention to the social vulnerability of children in the archipelago. We created the Child Vulnerability Index (CVI) to identify the scale and patterns of child vulnerability in the archipelago, and provide insights to mitigate the effects that hazardous events may cause. The index was created using 2017-2021 American Community Survey (ACS) data pertaining to three broad themes: Personal characteristics of children, Characteristics of households with children, and Overall household characteristics for all Municipios, Barrios, and Census Tracts in Puerto Rico. The CVI is a two-pronged tool consisting of an …

After The Criminal Justice System, Benjamin Levin Oct 2023

After The Criminal Justice System, Benjamin Levin

Washington Law Review

Since the 1960s, the “criminal justice system” has operated as the common label for a vast web of actors and institutions. But as critiques of mass incarceration have entered the mainstream, academics, activists, and advocates increasingly have stopped referring to the “criminal justice system.” Instead, they have opted for critical labels—the “criminal legal system,” the “criminal punishment system,” the “prison industrial complex,” and so on. What does this re-labeling accomplish? Does this change in language matter to broader efforts at criminal justice reform or abolition? Or does an emphasis on labels and language distract from substantive engagement with the injustices …

Taking Aim At New York's Concealed Carry Improvement Act, Leo Bernabei Oct 2023

Taking Aim At New York's Concealed Carry Improvement Act, Leo Bernabei

Fordham Law Review

In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court held in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen that New York’s requirement, which mandated that applicants for concealed carry licenses show proper cause for carrying a handgun in public, violated the Second and Fourteenth Amendments. Responding to the likely increase in individuals licensed to carry handguns in the state, New York enacted the Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA). This law bans all firearms from many places of public congregation, establishes a default rule that firearms are not allowed on private property without the owner or lessee’s permission, and sets additional …

Ny State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n V. Bruen: The Supreme Court's Insensitivity To Sensitive Places, Catherine O'Toole Oct 2023

Ny State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n V. Bruen: The Supreme Court's Insensitivity To Sensitive Places, Catherine O'Toole

Denver Law Review

The Supreme Court’s decision in N.Y. State Rifle and Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen jeopardized state licensing authorities’ abilities to use discretion when deciding whether a person is legally permitted to carry a concealed gun in public places. If states’ abilities to legislate on this issue are limited or states are unable to impose effective gun regulations, gun violence will certainly continue and perhaps increase. To solve this problem, and to undo the damage of Bruen, the Court must give power back to state legislatures so they can impose gun control regulations voted for by their citizens. There is extensive scholarly …
