Generating An Alternative Thesis Pathway: Critical Reflection Of Coursework And Internships, Kendele Kramer
Generating An Alternative Thesis Pathway: Critical Reflection Of Coursework And Internships, Kendele Kramer
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Since internship experiences are recognized as high impact educational practices and the honors thesis is designed to be a gateway to work beyond the typical undergraduate degree, I helped develop a pathway for BENG honors students to use critical reflection to develop an honors thesis related to internship and class experience. Then, I wrote about my own experiences to serve as an example for future BENG students who want to pursue this pathway.
My objective for this example thesis was to describe the value of my engineering and technical internships and coursework and how they have shaped my future career …
The Impact Of Encryption Technologies On Criminal Investigations In Canada: A Balanced Approach To The 'Going Dark' Problem In Light Of Self-Incrimination And Privacy Considerations, Laura Ellyson
PhD Dissertations
Encryption, a method of concealing information from unwanted eyes, has recently become more prevalent in society, following revelations of massive surveillance conducted by governments and the increasing number of attacks on companies holding their customers’ digitized information. Encryption mechanisms have become more sophisticated and widely used by citizens who wish to keep their personal information private and secure. Conversely, criminals have also been using strong encryption mechanisms to hide their wrongdoing, which has made it harder for law enforcement officials to access evidence. This “going dark” phenomenon has impacted both the seizure of “data at rest” (i.e., data that is …
The Nypd Mobility Initiative And Its Impact On Police Officers, Paul M. Lichtbraun
The Nypd Mobility Initiative And Its Impact On Police Officers, Paul M. Lichtbraun
Education Doctoral
The NYPD Mobility Initiative was launched in 2014. The program issued a smartphone to every NYPD officer and installed a tablet in every NYPD patrol car. Applications were developed for the smartphones/tablets. This quantitative descriptive retrospective pretest-posttest research study examined to what extent did the NYPD Mobility Initiative change police sergeants’ perceived ability to perform tasks that make them safer, more efficient, and more effective. The study sought to determine if NYPD sergeants believed that smartphones and tablets, which are part of the Mobility Initiative, fit the tasks they performed daily in the hopes of increasing task-technology fit (TTF).

Lapd Suffers Hiring Shortage Following A Shift In How Angelinos View Police, Nicole Norman
Honors Thesis
This is a news article written about how the nationwide police shortage following the murder of George Floyd has affected the City of Los Angeles. According to a poll done by Suffolk University and the LA Times, about one third of Angelinos believe that the police are performing poorly. However, those who are younger than 35 are more than twice likely to believe that police are performing poorly. Through this article, I will explore the changes that the LAPD is making in order to keep up with a changing social climate and an upcoming workforce that is not interested in …
Comment: Instilling Ordered Procedure In Assessing Motions For Reduced Sentences Under Section 404 Of The First Step Act, Michael C. Vega
Comment: Instilling Ordered Procedure In Assessing Motions For Reduced Sentences Under Section 404 Of The First Step Act, Michael C. Vega
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This Comment discusses the lack of ordered procedure in assessing motions brought pursuant to § 404 of the First Step Act of 2018. For nearly a quarter century, federal cocaine sentencing subjected crack-cocaine offenses dealing in one-hundredth the quantity of drug to the same statutory penalty as powder-cocaine offenses. This disparate treatment of drug offenses impacted primarily African Americans. The Fair Sentencing Act of 2010 reduced the disparity but applied only prospectively. Section 404 of the First Step Act made certain provisions of the Fair Sentencing Act retroactive. In the ensuing years, the federal courts have disagreed on the precise …
In Defense Of (Mental) Hearth And Home: Challenges To § 922(G)(4) In The Wake Of New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’N V. Bruen, Zachary M. Robole
In Defense Of (Mental) Hearth And Home: Challenges To § 922(G)(4) In The Wake Of New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’N V. Bruen, Zachary M. Robole
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Individually, discussions about mental illness and firearm possession are at the forefront of American discourse. Intriguingly, the intersection of the two issues produces provocative social and legal questions. 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(4) bans those who have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution from owning a firearm. This ban is an indefinite one. Such indefiniteness supports a conclusion that “once mentally ill, always so.” But the “once mentally ill, always so” mantra is falling out of acceptance today. Therefore, it is logical to conclude that § 922(g)(4) does not best serve its intended function. Congress provided a route for those …
The U.S. Government Taking Under Eminent Domain: When Just Compensation Is Unjust (Comment), Michael Perez
The U.S. Government Taking Under Eminent Domain: When Just Compensation Is Unjust (Comment), Michael Perez
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The true effects of private takings do not occur in a vacuum and are not solely academic in nature. The consequence of losing property implicates loss of income, loss of value in residual property, and loss of familial land. The importance of protecting the rights of individual land-owners becomes increasingly apparent when analyzing the effect of the taking.
This comment will explore how the government’s taking of private property occurs—including how the government has loosened restrictions and procedural hurdles. The analysis will focus specifically on processes, policies, and statutes, created and used by the federal government to facilitate takings necessary …

Driving And Community Mobility: An Online Educational Program For Generalist Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Gerard Blanco
Driving And Community Mobility: An Online Educational Program For Generalist Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Gerard Blanco
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Driving is an important daily activity that often goes unnoticed, yet it enables individuals to engage in crucial tasks such as grocery shopping, going to work, and participating in social activities. Occupational therapy (OT) practitioners must recognize and address the significance of driving in their daily routines to promote clients' independence and fulfillment. However, despite being well-equipped to assist clients with driving-related issues, many practitioners avoid or neglect this area of occupation. A reluctance to addressing driving and community mobility (DCM) can arise from a lack of confidence, available resources, support, or fear of losing a client's trust. These barriers …

Santa Cruz County’s Shared Safety Workgroup, a collaborative chapter of United Way Santa Cruz, is working to better meet the needs of survivors and victims of crime. Due to the complexity of their trauma and the systems they navigate many survivors of crime are experiencing re-victimization. UWSCC attempted to create a comprehensive system mapping process for Santa Cruz County’s survivor-serving system with the assistance of community agencies. The expected outcome of the system mapping project is to create the first-ever system mapping tech platform that uniquely autogenerates services for survivors of crime while eliminating specific barriers based on their individual …
The Relationship Of Graduating Students (Alumni-To-Be)’S Sense Of Belonging And Their Intent To Give Back To Their Alma Mater At A Hispanic Serving Institution (Hsi) In South Texas, Lanlan Alvarado
Theses and Dissertations
Higher education institutions are increasingly relying on funding from the private sector (Council for Aid to Education, 2013) as state funding to higher education has decreased in recent years. Bridging the gap between university financial needs and available funding has become a high priority. In the process, higher education institutions have enlisted their advancement offices towards such bridging efforts by systematically bringing in financial support from donors, alumni, corporations, and foundations.
Funding from private sources fluctuates with changes in the macro-economic environment, laws, and regulations, as well as shifts in philanthropic interests in the public. Alumni giving constitutes a substantial …

Voter Id Laws And Gendered Impacts On Voter Turnout, Jacqueline D. Franolich
Voter Id Laws And Gendered Impacts On Voter Turnout, Jacqueline D. Franolich
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Since well before the U.S. presidential election of 2020, voter identification laws have been a topic of discussion amongst politicians, voters, the news media, and scholars. Many have questioned the focus and true reason for their creation, their implementation, their effects and potential unintended consequences. Specifically, many have argued that voter identification laws pose too great a barrier to potential voters to be worth the benefits gained in election security. Since the election of 2020, those discussions seemed to magnify. For example, in a May 2021 speech, President Biden repeated similar assertions made in the past by scholars and activists …
Rated T For Therapy: How Video Games Portray Mental Illness And Their Effects On Social Stigmas, Christine Wendell
Rated T For Therapy: How Video Games Portray Mental Illness And Their Effects On Social Stigmas, Christine Wendell
All Theses
Mental illness has always been a tricky subject for us to tackle as a society due to the social stigmas surrounding it. Historically, people with mental illness were seen as violent and unstable and would often need to be committed for public safety; however, a large majority of people with mental illness do not fit that bracket and often don’t reach out for help due to that fear of being “othered” by society. As time went on, these tropes faded to purely entertainment mediums but the stigmas still remain. Many video games specifically hold onto these tropes for shock value …

Human Suspicious Activity Detection, Nilamben Bhuva
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The detection of suspicious human activity is a crucial aspect of ensuring public safety and security. The aim is to identify suspicious behavior. To accomplish this, we employ the LRCN, a long-term recurrent convolutional network, to detect anomalous activity. It is important to consider the temporal data of the video when classifying suspicious behavior, and the framework uses a combination of CNNs and RNNs to analyze video frames and extract relevant features. The key milestones of this project include conducting research, collecting and pre-processing data, designing and training the model, and evaluating its performance. The resulting detection system can accurately …

Vanet Applications Under Loss Scenarios & Evolving Wireless Technology, Adil Alsuhaim
All Dissertations
In this work we study the impact of wireless network impairment on the performance of VANET applications such as Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC), and other VANET applications that periodically broadcast messages. We also study the future of VANET application in light of the evolution of radio access technologies (RAT) that are used to exchange messages. Previous work in the literature proposed fallback strategies that utilizes on-board sensors to recover in case of wireless network impairment, those methods assume a fixed time headway value, and do not achieve string stability. In this work, we study the string stability of a …
Contrasting Public And Private Approaches To Private Land Conservation In The United States: Local Government, Land Trust, And Landowner Viewpoints, Anna Overby
All Dissertations
In the United States (US), low-density, non-contiguous development, termed sprawl, has long been of widespread concern. Since the 1970s, rural residential sprawl, or exurban sprawl, has grown faster than any other development pattern. Exurban sprawl is development beyond the urban/suburban fringe with ties to the urban environment, such as employment and consumption, rather than to rural economies. Exurban sprawl is highly consumptive of land and has implications for conservation, natural resource management, agriculture, and communities. This study explores two main avenues of exurban sprawl prevention in the US: voluntary conservation easements and local government growth management regulations. The use of …

A Review Of Nebraska Public School Active Shooter/Armed Intruder Preparedness Requirements Compared To Other States, Anna Hansen
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Approximately 17% of mass shootings which occurred between 2000 and 2013 took place in the public school K-12 setting. The incidence of school shootings is on the rise, with a particularly concerning increase in annual incidents beginning around 2010. A review of legal requirements for public school active shooter preparedness in FEMA Region VII, which includes the states Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, was conducted. While Iowa clearly requires an emergency operations plan including provisions for the active shooter scenario, Nebraska and Kansas do not clearly require such provisions in school emergency operations plans, and Missouri does not appear to …

Regeneration Of Quaking Aspen And Understory Vegetation Change After Fire Risk Reduction Treatment, Allison M. Trudgeon
Regeneration Of Quaking Aspen And Understory Vegetation Change After Fire Risk Reduction Treatment, Allison M. Trudgeon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is a keystone species that, when coexisting with conifers (i.e., seral aspen), often undergoes stand-replacing disturbances to sustain long term vigor. Historically, mixed-to-high severity fire reduced fuels and regenerated aspen, but such disturbances have become less common in recent decades. This has often led to high fuel loading, and many seral aspen stands are at now risk of an unpredictable, high-severity fire, posing a threat to development in the wildland-urban-interface. The lack of a commercial market for aspen, and the risk of conducting prescribed fire, means there are few alternate management options. This has …
Locating Low Head Dams Using A Deep Learning Model In Arcgis Pro With Aerial Imagery, Caitlin R. Arnold
Locating Low Head Dams Using A Deep Learning Model In Arcgis Pro With Aerial Imagery, Caitlin R. Arnold
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Low Head Dams are man-made structures that span the width of a river and allow water to flow over them. Although these structures vary in age and original purpose, some pose a life-threatening danger when recreationalists are entrapped in the reverse current at the toe. Despite these dangerous structures causing many drowning deaths in the USA each year, most low head dams do not have safety regulations and remain unknown to those charged with dam and public safety. Thus, to improve public safety at these structures, the first step is to fully inventory low head dams, so that subsequent efforts …

The Mental Health Experiences Of Daca Recipients And Non-Daca Recipients, Lizeth Ariana Guadalupe
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Millions of immigrant children without legal status grow up in the U.S. and aspire to live and thrive in American society. However, without legal status, they face challenges in integrating into society. Implemented in 2012, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was created to help immigrant youth integrate into society by providing them with work permits, facilitating educational opportunities, and protection from deportation. However, not all immigrant children qualify for DACA, and the recent legal challenges to DACA prohibit new applicants and put roughly 600,000 recipients in legal limbo. The research questions this study poses are 1.) How …

First responders are at risk of developing mental health problems due to repeated exposure to traumatic incidents, increasing their chance of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and suicide. Unfortunately, first responders do not recognize that they may have a mental illness and are reluctant to seek help. This paper will discuss the prevalence of mental health problems among first responders and the barriers to their help-seeking. These barriers include the stigma around mental illness within the culture, the assessability of professional help, and the lack of mental health literacy regarding their well-being. Further discussion will focus …
A School To Probation Pipeline: Examining The Perceptions Of Juvenile Justice Personnel With Youth In Harris County, Gloria Okere
A School To Probation Pipeline: Examining The Perceptions Of Juvenile Justice Personnel With Youth In Harris County, Gloria Okere
Dissertations (2016-Present)
The school-to-prison pipeline represents a perspective in the administration of justice, where youths in an educational environment are funneled out of the public school system into the correctional institutions. There is a dearth of knowledge in the literature regarding the net-widening effects on youths brought into the juvenile and the criminal justice system that otherwise would have remained in their educational institutions without the criminal justice intervention. The expansion of the justice system's reach to the youths has become so prevalent, raising concerns that research has yet to illustrate what happens before a youth goes from school disciplinary measures and …
