The theory guiding this research study is Kohlberg’s theory of moral development as it emphasizes how individuals establish their ethics and values because digital citizenship teaches students to use the Internet in an ethical and appropriate manner. The qualitative inquiry was conducted using an intrinsic case study in a small rural secondary public school. Convenience sampling was utilized, giving way to 18 adolescent participants and 10 teachers at the …

Worker Engagement In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: The Roles Of Spirituality, Resilience, And Perceived Organizational Support For Engaging The Workforce, Beverly Webb Dec 2023

Worker Engagement In Faith-Based Nonprofit Organizations: The Roles Of Spirituality, Resilience, And Perceived Organizational Support For Engaging The Workforce, Beverly Webb

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Nonprofit organizations rely heavily upon volunteerism and skilled employees willing to accept lower salaries to accomplish an organization's mission. Limited funding and surging needs in the nonprofit sector require a greater understanding of engaged workers to fully engage the workforce, where losses for nonengaged workers were estimated in the trillions globally. Research has supported the influence of spirituality, resilience, or perceived organizational support on worker engagement in for-profit and nonprofit organizations in varied settings. This study examined the relationships between spirituality, resilience, perceived organizational support, and worker engagement in Christian faith-based nonprofit organizations. Data was collected from two Christian faith-based …

Who Should I Trust? Dynamics Within Hitler's Inner Circle, Sarah C. Randow

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Behind every leader is a team of men and women working together. These men and women help complete the leader’s objectives During the rise of Adolf Hitler and then throughout his time as Chancellor/Dictator, men came together with a clear objective. Hitler and a group of five men, known as his inner circle, developed relationships that were tested over time. Unlike previously published works that only examined the individuals within the inner circle and Hitler, this study will examine the relationships that developed and continued throughout the rise of Hitler. Heinrich Himmler, Joseph Goebbels, Rudolf Hess, Ernst Röhm, and Hermann …

The Influences Of Music On The Confidence And Sense Of Belonging Of Children, Melinda Sue Mertz Dec 2023

The Influences Of Music On The Confidence And Sense Of Belonging Of Children, Melinda Sue Mertz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Human emotion is greatly affected by music. Both listening to and creating music influence a person’s emotions. Despite the research supporting this finding, there is a lack of research detailing how music influences the confidence and sense of belonging for the early childhood student. This issue is important because educators are concerned about the mental wellbeing of their students. The observation of how music effects the confidence and sense of belonging of a child may assist educators to improve the issue of mental health among the students in their schools. This qualitative case study, which takes place in South Africa, …

The Psychological Impact On The Relational Partner Of Bpd-Diagnosed Persons, Carl Pendleton Dec 2023

The Psychological Impact On The Relational Partner Of Bpd-Diagnosed Persons, Carl Pendleton

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) presents a complex mental health condition marked by a consistent pattern of instability in mood, self-perception, behavior, and interpersonal connections (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). In romantic relationships, such intense and unpredictable emotions can make life particularly challenging for a non-BPD partner. This cross-sectional quantitative study aimed to investigate the psychological impact on non-BPD diagnosed romantic partners of individuals suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD). Self-reported assessments were collected online from participants (N = 77) to explore potential correlations between the non-BPD partner's history of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), their level of knowledge regarding BPD, religious practices, …

Examining The Predictive Weight Of Perceived Organizational Support And Job Embeddedness On Turnover Intention, Tyler J. Swansboro Dec 2023

Examining The Predictive Weight Of Perceived Organizational Support And Job Embeddedness On Turnover Intention, Tyler J. Swansboro

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Generation Z personnel are entering the workplace in monumental numbers. As this understudied population enters the work domain, the business environment will continuously struggle to adapt to their new perceptions, motifs, and thought processes. When these new workers enter the workforce, many will inevitably enter the leisure and hospitality industry. This specific industry has the highest turnover rate in America (Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2022). To further the understanding of retention, this study was structured to explore the predictive weight of perceived organizational support (POS) and job embeddedness (JE) on turnover intention, to assess which construct was the stronger …

Sisters In Harm: A Phenomenological Study Examining Active-Duty Military Women’S Lived Experiences Of Military Sexual Assault And Trauma, Brandy R. Preston Dec 2023

Sisters In Harm: A Phenomenological Study Examining Active-Duty Military Women’S Lived Experiences Of Military Sexual Assault And Trauma, Brandy R. Preston

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There has been a plethora of research studies conducted on the staggering statistics surrounding military sexual trauma (MST) and how the armed forces have systematically failed to provide appropriate protections for women who experience military sexual assault (MSA). However, firsthand experiences from active-duty women who experienced MSA and the possible secondary trauma they experienced have very little documentation besides that from a quantitative research point of view. Studies surrounding survivors’ personal experiences are even more limited. Within this body of research, a phenomenological approach is used to describe the contextual and perceptual experiences surrounding active-duty women who are survivors of …

A Multicase Study Of Local Church Leaders' Perceived Impact On Reducing Inequity In Majority-Minority Urban Schools, Kenslio Ojentis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this multi-case study was to explore the local churches’ perceived impact on reducing education inequity in majority-minority urban schools in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. In this research, education inequity is generally defined as the lack of academic resources such as school funding, experienced teachers, and technology in a community that has been historically excluded. This study was guided by social capital theory as it relates to education and how they influence community and parental involvement levels and investments that impact educational success. The research questions are as follows: (1) How do local …

Attitudes Toward The Amish Held By Nursing And Social Work Students At A Midwestern University, Lora Wyss, Rosanna Hess

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

As Amish populations increase and move across North America, the likelihood grows that healthcare professionals will come into contact with them. No studies have been conducted to examine contact frequency with or attitudes of healthcare providers toward the Amish. The aims of this study were to examine attitudes toward the Amish among nursing and social work students attending a Christian liberal arts university in a Midwestern state, and, to determine the relationship between students’ cultural awareness, their knowledge of the Amish, their contact with the Amish, and their attitudes toward the Amish. The participants were anonymously surveyed using the Revised …

Health Beliefs, Health Practices, And Health-Seeking Behaviors Among Swartzentruber Amish In Clark County, Wisconsin, Courtney J. Schoessow Dec 2023

Health Beliefs, Health Practices, And Health-Seeking Behaviors Among Swartzentruber Amish In Clark County, Wisconsin, Courtney J. Schoessow

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Although the literature contains valuable information about Amish culture, few qualitative studies have been conducted on the health beliefs, health practices, and health-seeking behaviors of the Swartzentruber Amish, the most conservative group of Old Order Amish. The purpose of this study was to describe these dynamics for the Swartzentruber Amish of Clark County, Wisconsin. Utilizing the grounded theory approach, 25 participants were interviewed and seven themes were identified: shared decision-making is common in families; causes of illness are believed to be etiological or the will of God; home remedies are the first choice; preventive medicine is an unfamiliar concept; health …

Assessing The Attitudes And Perceptions Of The Old Order Amish Toward Genetic Testing For Familial Defective Apolipoprotein B-100, Erin Sutcliffe, Laura J. Conway, Alan Shuldiner, Toni Pollin

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Through a founder effect, one in eight Lancaster County, PA, Amish harbors the pathogenic APOB variant R3527Q, causing Familial Defective Apolipoprotein B-100 (FDB) that is rare in the general population. Affected individuals are at increased risk for high low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease and may benefit from early screening and treatment. A qualitative interview approach was used to investigate the genetic risk perceptions of the Amish and their attitudes towards genetic testing for FDB. The goal was to identify elements necessary for a successful program that would identify high risk individuals in the Lancaster County Amish …

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford Dec 2023

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford

The Confluence

This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that negative attitudes towards bisexual people (bi-negativity) exists within the LGBTQ+ and heterosexual communities and to determine if levels of bi-negativity are higher within the LGBTQ+ group. I administered the Gender-Based Attitudes Towards Bisexuality (GBAB) Scale by Nielsen et al. (2022) to measure bi-negativity using an online survey. The results, obtained from 87 participants who identify as LGBTQ+ and 121 participants who identify as heterosexual between the ages of 18 and 80, support my hypothesis that bi-negativity exists within both groups. However, contrary to my second hypothesis, higher levels of bi-negativity were …

The Confluence

Inner experience of all 5 modalities were investigated to determine if there were correlations amongst them and how visual mental imagery and internal hearing were used in an applied story. Our sample (N = 137) completed the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ; Marks, 1973) and the Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire (Psi-Q; Andrade et al., 2013) to obtain trait measures of the different modalities within the inner experience. Results showed statistically significant positive correlations between each of the trait measures of the 5 sensory modalities (visual mental imagery, inner hearing, taste, smell, and touch). Based on their VVIQ total scores, …

Improving Prosocial And Academic Skills While Decreasing Challenging Behavior, Tom Clees Dec 2023

Improving Prosocial And Academic Skills While Decreasing Challenging Behavior, Tom Clees

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Youth with challenging behaviors such as noncompliance, aggression, self-injury, and deficits in academic engagement are at-risk for future school failure, including suspension and expulsion, mental health challenges, and incarceration (Alberto and Troutman, 2022; Kauffman, 2016). Low academic achievement, behavioral excesses and social skills deficits are predictive of each other (Gresham, 2016), and may create an escalating cycle leading to further antisocial responses (Kaufman, 2016). The literature provides considerable research on evidence-based strategies that have been associated with positive academic (on-task, task completion) and behavioral (increase in prosocial skills with decreasing challenging behavior) outcomes, among which include (1) self-directed interventions, or …

Extinguish Teacher Burnout To Ignite School And Classroom Connectivity, Brandon Quinn Mr. Dec 2023

Extinguish Teacher Burnout To Ignite School And Classroom Connectivity, Brandon Quinn Mr.

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Schools across the state and the nation face a significant concern in the education profession. Many educators are leaving the teaching field or seriously considering leaving earlier than expected. Couple this with the growing problem of new teacher retention, and anyone can see that our beloved institution is heading towards a major crisis if we are not already involved in one. One of the main culprits of the woes in education is teacher burnout. Developing a strong climate and culture in a classroom is very challenging for an educator experiencing burnout. In the “Extinguishing Teacher Burnout and Ignite School and …

Leaning In And Bouncing Back: Neoliberal Feminism And The Work Of Self-Transformation In Ottessa Moshfegh’S My Year Of Rest And Relaxation (2018) And Halle Butler’S The New Me (2019), Isabel Sykes Dec 2023

Leaning In And Bouncing Back: Neoliberal Feminism And The Work Of Self-Transformation In Ottessa Moshfegh’S My Year Of Rest And Relaxation (2018) And Halle Butler’S The New Me (2019), Isabel Sykes

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article is concerned with the capacity of contemporary fiction to reveal and oppose the ubiquity of work in Western culture. I conduct a comparative literary analysis of two contemporary novels that expose how neoliberal rationality has transformed work into an all-encompassing project, endorsed by a corresponding manifestation of feminism. Rather than challenging gendered labor relations through collective action, this “neoliberal feminism” incites women to turn their critical gaze within and transform themselves into resilient citizens and workers. Its sensibility is disseminated through popular literature, from “chick-lit” to self-help books, via narratives of physical and psychological self-transformation. This article builds …

Survivors Of Sexual Assault On The Stand: A New Feminist And Victim-Centered Bioethical Framework To Discuss Justice And Trauma, Mathilde Genest Dec 2023

Survivors Of Sexual Assault On The Stand: A New Feminist And Victim-Centered Bioethical Framework To Discuss Justice And Trauma, Mathilde Genest

Journal of International Women's Studies

This essay argues that neuroscientific knowledge of trauma should be utilized to address injustices experienced by survivors of sexual assault (SA) in the courtroom and introduces a new feminist and victim-centered bioethical framework. Survivors face several injustices during a SA trial. Rape myths and victim stereotypes, which stem from gender discrimination, create unrealistic expectations for survivors’ behaviors and engender epistemic injustices. Other injustices are inherent to SA trials. Notably, the justice system fails to protect survivors and actually harms them by granting them little agency while risking secondary victimization. Many injustices experienced by survivors are linked to their reactions to …

Sober Women’S Feminist Resistance To Alcohol Marketing And Cultural Representations Of Women’S Drinking Practices, Claire Davey Dec 2023

Sober Women’S Feminist Resistance To Alcohol Marketing And Cultural Representations Of Women’S Drinking Practices, Claire Davey

Journal of International Women's Studies

Alcohol is marketed to women as a glamorous and empowering reward for juggling the demands of work and family life. This essay explores the ways in which women who do not drink reject the feminization of alcohol and drinking practices and frame this rejection within discourses of feminist resistance. This essay draws on data collected as part of a mixed-method ethnographic research project that investigates women’s use of, and participation in, online sobriety communities. Findings suggest that women who lead or utilize online sobriety communities have considerable awareness of the feminized marketing of alcohol, and some express strong ideological opposition …

Ungrading: Reflections Through A Feminist Pedagogical Lens, Erin M. Eggleston, Shelby Kimmel Dec 2023

Ungrading: Reflections Through A Feminist Pedagogical Lens, Erin M. Eggleston, Shelby Kimmel

Feminist Pedagogy

Ungrading is a pedagogical approach in which no grades are given on any assignments. Instead, students are provided with many opportunities to submit work and gain feedback. The goal is to shift student focus from achieving a grade to growth as a learner and a person. As instructors, our ungrading approach utilized personalized learning plans, checkpoint reflections, and student-professor learning conferences to put agency in the hands of our students. We employed this method in upper-level biology and computer science courses and provide critical reflections here regarding our experiences and the connections between this approach and feminist STEM pedagogy tenets. …

Building Community, Competency, And Creativity In Calculus 2: Summary Of A Pilot Year Of Project Implementation, Jennifer Beichman, Candice R. Price

Feminist Pedagogy

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, instructional modes at our institution moved to fully online and remote, then fully online but on campus, and back to in-person learning in fall 2021. To combat perceived issues in student engagement, we piloted using group projects in place of exams at the natural content break points in Calculus 2.

The Influence Of Prior Legal Background On Judicial Sentencing Considerations, Esther Nir, Siyu Liu Dec 2023

The Influence Of Prior Legal Background On Judicial Sentencing Considerations, Esther Nir, Siyu Liu

International Journal on Responsibility

State court judges are influenced by a myriad of factors during criminal case processing. To study the influence of prior legal background on judicial decision-making at sentencing, we performed in-depth qualitative interviews of 39 trial court judges presiding over criminal cases in a Northeastern U.S. state. We find that judges are influenced by their former legal experiences and most judges are cognizant of this influence. While certain sentencing considerations are prioritized for almost all judges (e.g., criminal history, seriousness of the offense), prioritization and processing of many other sentencing criteria are correlated with prior legal background. Former defense attorneys tend …

Ontological Inquiry In An Undergraduate Communication Course, William B. Strean Dec 2023

Ontological Inquiry In An Undergraduate Communication Course, William B. Strean

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

This essay explores how ontological and somatic approaches were applied in an undergraduate communication course. Beginning by contrasting the assumptions of traditional knowledge and skills-based approaches with the shift to a focus on being within ontological methods, the author expands to show specifically how somatics informed the learning activities and students’ development in communication. After providing examples of the core content of public speaking and interpersonal communication and shares students’ learning and feedback, the author concludes by considering broader possibilities for ontological inquiry and transformative education.

The Spontaneous Wellsprings Of Music, Nicholas Mcnair Dec 2023

The Spontaneous Wellsprings Of Music, Nicholas Mcnair

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

Western Classical Music has traditionally been described in terms of fixed structures, carefully built up by the composer and presented to the performer in the form of a score. This has crystallised over the centuries into an ideological position which, in the last analysis, gives absolute authority to the composer over the performer, severely limiting the freedom of expression of the latter. In this article I seek to reverse this position by pointing to the essential spontaneity, represented by improvisation, that lies at the heart of all music-making, albeit fiercely opposed by the fundamentalism of an endless number of structural …

Listening – A Possibility For Improved Healthcare, Sam Katzif Dec 2023

Listening – A Possibility For Improved Healthcare, Sam Katzif

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

The conversation between a healthcare provider and a patient is one component of obtaining information for diagnosis and treatment. Responsibility rests with healthcare providers to actively lead this conversation so this exchange of information is accurate and complete with nothing added to and nothing left out. The question then becomes, “Do the words of the patient land word for word with their practitioner?”. In the world of “being” or ontology the answer is no. This article will focus on an ontological perceptual constraint known as Already-Always-Listening and introduce the practice of Authentic Listening as access to a transformation in healthcare …

Differentiating Modernity (The System Of White Supremacy) And Generating Otherwise Worlds As Publicly Engaged Scholars: What’S Ontological Inquiry Got To Do With It?, Carolyne J. White, Arturo E. Osorio, Tim K. Eatman, Margaret J. Weiss

Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education

Seeking an answer to Tina Turner’s refrain, “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” this article is a rebellious, messy, place-based and deeply collaborative conversation. We draw upon the legacy of theatre and social critique and adopt the literary present tense to evoke a brave intimate space for imagining possibilities beyond the academic conventions of the present epistemological order. We seek to illuminate how ontological inquiry may provoke powerful access to generating new worldmaking for climate justice, particularly when one is being a publicly engaged scholar. Why new worldmaking? Within this unprecedented time of racial reckoning, war, climate catastrophe and …

Efficacy Of Modified Psychotherapy To Mitigate Depression Among African American Adults And Older Adults: A Systematic Review, Bridget Ashaolu, Nassrine Noureddine

Pacific Journal of Health

It has been established that due to several factors, African American adults and older adults in the United States respond poorly to pharmacologic intervention in treating depression. The study will help to provide evidence and raise awareness on how to better serve the African American population with depression. This systematic review of the literature examines the effectiveness of using modified evidence-based psychotherapy and faith-based resources in improving depression among older African American adults over the use of conventional pharmacological intervention. 21 studies that recommended utilizing psychotherapy intervention to improve depression in this population were reviewed to better understand the need …
