In The Beginning: Rousseau’S Discourse On The Origin Of Inequality & The Socialist Book Of Genesis, Steven Kessler
In The Beginning: Rousseau’S Discourse On The Origin Of Inequality & The Socialist Book Of Genesis, Steven Kessler
Journal of Ideology
The following article makes the connection between the work and thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and socialism. Rousseau invalidated the concept of original sin where God punished man with labor. Not only did he invalidate original sin in his personal life, but he went a step further: he invalidated the entire creation myth from the Book of Genesis. Rousseau then supplanted that creation myth with his own origin story, one he outlined in great detail in an essay called, This Discourse on the Origin of Inequality. This work contains the creation myth of socialism, and is the socialist book of …

The Power Of Spiritual Leadership In The Rite Of Christian Initiation Of Adults, Stefanie Mingari
The Power Of Spiritual Leadership In The Rite Of Christian Initiation Of Adults, Stefanie Mingari
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Faith and spirituality are becoming increasingly sought-after anchors in mounting challenges in the contemporary world. The need for effective leadership, spiritual guidance, and mentorship have become more pivotal. Evidence also suggests that spiritual leadership values and practices are related to leadership effectiveness and encompass the behaviors needed to motivate oneself, satisfy spiritual well-being, and positively influence others within that organization. However, more research has yet to explore how spirituality affects leadership behavior and action in faith -based programs such as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).
This study explored the lived experiences of RCIA leaders and participants to …

"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley
"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley
Dissertations
At the center of First Peter’s rhetoric stands an exhortation to “follow” in Christ’s footsteps (2:21). Several scholars have suggested (sometimes off-handedly or in a singular footnote) that this specific exhortation utilizes the technical language of “discipleship,” but only to support a particular piece of the letter’s paraenesis (2:18–25). I contend that such a suggestion, while a helpful place to start, does not go far enough. With this study, I propose that we may read First Peter comprehensively as a summons to discipleship in accord with ancient understandings of education, exemplified in the multifaceted system of Hellenistic paideia. I argue …
(Re)Defining Engineers’ Resilience: Part I An Exploratory Study Into How Engineering Educators Understand And Teach Resilience, Natalie Wint, Inês Direito
(Re)Defining Engineers’ Resilience: Part I An Exploratory Study Into How Engineering Educators Understand And Teach Resilience, Natalie Wint, Inês Direito
Research Papers
In recent years ‘resilience’ has increasingly been framed as a positive attribute that can play a role in the success of university students. The need for students to develop and demonstrate resilience seems particularly pertinent within engineering education. Firstly, engineering degrees are often associated with heavy workloads. This, alongside high rates of attrition and increases in mental health issues, suggests a need for students to demonstrate resilience. Secondly, engineering degrees prepare students for a profession, and it is likely that courses place emphasis on graduate attributes such as resilience. Finally, the rate of technological advancement and societal change places additional …
Fiduciaries In Priest's Clothing: Clergy Sexual Abuse And Fiduciary Duty, Sebastian Richardson
Fiduciaries In Priest's Clothing: Clergy Sexual Abuse And Fiduciary Duty, Sebastian Richardson
Northwestern University Law Review
This Note argues that clergypersons who offer religious guidance are fiduciaries in some limited circumstances and therefore liable for sexual contact that occurs between them and congregants. This Note will argue that clergypersons are most properly deemed fiduciaries through a fact-based definitional approach. As such, this Note departs from previous arguments that clergypersons are fiduciaries because they provide services analogous to secular counselors. Prospective fiduciary relationships involving clergy should be analyzed using a distinct conceptual account of fiduciary relationships rather than an analogical analysis based on apparent similarities between a clergyperson and other fiduciaries. Such an approach is preferable to …

Herrens Veje: A Catalyst To Reflect Upon Military Chaplaincy And Ecclesial Issues In A Nordic Context, Jan Grimell, Mariecke Van Den Berg
Journal of Religion & Film
This article is based on an analysis of the first season of the Danish series Herrens Veje (The Way of the Lord; Price 2017). The series portrays the young, idealistic pastor and military chaplain August, who is deployed to a conflict zone with a military unit. He accompanies the unit on a patrol to win the trust of the soldiers. During the patrol, they engage in combat and August kills an innocent civilian woman. Upon return, the transition from military to civilian life proves to be increasingly challenging and troublesome. As the series proceeds, August’s mental health deteriorates and his …

Preventative Mental Health Measures For Ministerial Leaders, Claire Phypers
Preventative Mental Health Measures For Ministerial Leaders, Claire Phypers
Selected Honors Theses
Pastoral care and responsibilities come with a particular weight that can feel overwhelming at times for those engaged in ministry. In a world where mental health seems to be making all the headlines, there appears to be an overall lack of conversation surrounding the emotional well-being of clergy. This thesis aims to create a more holistic perception of mental health among ministerial leaders and pinpoint preventative measures that can be put in place to protect the hearts and minds of pastors as they fulfill the callings on their lives. In conducting this research, a mixed-method survey was completed by twenty-one …
