Current Issues Faced By Controllers, Anthony C. Bucaro, T. Jeffrey Wilks, Christopher Yust
Current Issues Faced By Controllers, Anthony C. Bucaro, T. Jeffrey Wilks, Christopher Yust
Faculty Publications
We conduct a series of semi-structured interviews with controllers and chief accounting officers from large public and private companies—over half are Fortune 500—to identify the current issues faced by the controllership function. We map these issues into the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA®) Management Accounting Competencies and highlight recent research that addresses these issues and where there are gaps. Our findings suggest three IMA competencies that weigh heavily on controllers’ minds: (1) collaboration, teamwork, and relationship management; (2) information systems and technology; and (3) talent management. Finally, we describe how the insights from controllers suggest important improvements to accounting curriculum …
Pandemic Communication: International Communication, Anthony Spencer
Pandemic Communication: International Communication, Anthony Spencer
Other Scholarly Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed our world as we previously knew it. One of those major changes is how we communicate with one another across national borders. The pandemic forced us to find ways to improve the way we utilize social media outlets to communicate with others around the world. Research into global communication has long been too focused on the West, and particularly the United States. This shift in our communication usage also provides a moment of pause to reflect on ways to make the field of international communication more inclusive and focus on key issues which influence transnational …

Navigating To The Top: Career Success Experiences Of Black Women Senior Leaders In Higher Education, Gladys R. Peters
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The career advancement for Black women in higher education is not the same as their counterparts. Gender equity practices fail to challenge homogenous professional communities limiting how race and gender influence leadership advancement for Black women career trajectories. Black women who occupy positions of institutional influence and authority as senior leaders have largely been overlooked in in higher education research. Using a qualitative exploratory approach, this multiple case study explored the lived experiences of 10 Black women presently working in senior leadership roles in four-year public institutions of higher learning. This study sought to contribute to a deeper understanding of …
A Digital Transformation Framework For Biopharma Manufacturing, Frederick K. Johnson
A Digital Transformation Framework For Biopharma Manufacturing, Frederick K. Johnson
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In the current climate of economic uncertainty and social unrest, biopharmaceutical (biopharma) companies face the challenges of changes in consumer behavior, cyber threats, and technological advancement. At the same time, their top priorities are global market growth, strengthening R&D, and undergoing digital transformation (Dx). Given these developments, biopharma organizations must choose a Dx framework as they engage in the digital transformation of their businesses in this high-stakes environment. However, there are significant problems with existing Dx frameworks. Most models are generalized frameworks designed to sell consulting services. Some focus on the enterprise or the manufacturing operations, but not both, and …

Stress Appraisals Of Organizational Change: The Role Of Adaptability And Communication, Wheeler Nakahara
Stress Appraisals Of Organizational Change: The Role Of Adaptability And Communication, Wheeler Nakahara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This two-part study used a field study and experimental vignette design to investigate predictors (extent of change, adaptability, and communication) of threat, hindrance, and challenge appraisals of change. The field study also examined employee well-being, job attitudes, and behaviors as outcomes of these appraisals. Drawing from stress appraisal theory, the primary goal of the study was to add to our knowledge of how personal characteristics and contextual factors relate to positive and negative appraisals of change and how those appraisals manifest in employee related outcomes. I hypothesized that adaptability and high-quality communication would function as resources that promote positive appraisals, …
Policing The Danger Narrative, Avlana K. Eisenberg
Policing The Danger Narrative, Avlana K. Eisenberg
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
The clamor for police reform in the United States has reached a fever pitch. The current debate has mainly centered around questions of police function: What functions should police perform, and how should they perform them to avoid injustice and unnecessary harm? This Article, in contrast, focuses on a central aspect of police culture—namely, how police envision their relationship to those policed. It exposes the vast reach of a deeply engrained “danger narrative” and demonstrates the disastrous consequences that this narrative has helped to bring about. Reinforced by police training, codified by courts, and broadly deployed, the danger narrative is …
Teachers' Perspectives On Transformational Leadership, Kelsey Rae Peltier
Teachers' Perspectives On Transformational Leadership, Kelsey Rae Peltier
Theses and Dissertations
School leaders aim for steady progress and yearly gains. In most cases, this means modifications must be made throughout the school, particularly within the classroom. If teachers are unprepared or disengaged in the planning process, a program’s success might be at risk. Consideration of teacher needs will be influential in instructional performance and will also have a favorable impact on student achievement. With transformational leadership and its eagerness to include teacher input, reform will surely flourish. Its presence has been reviewed in a quantitative study with participants who currently have a general education position in the same school. An online …

Professional Development Needs Of Early Childhood Educators Teaching Children With Challenging Behaviors, Latashia L. Kelly
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractEarly childhood educators have struggled to teach children with challenging behaviors, which can lead to suspension and expulsion. Although early childhood educators have limited professional development training in challenging behaviors, they are often not equipped to teach children with challenging behaviors. There is little research on how early childhood educators perceive their current training regarding teaching children with challenging behaviors. Exploring early childhood educators’ perceptions can determine what they need to teach children with challenging behaviors for a thriving classroom environment. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to better understand educators’ perceptions regarding the type of professional development …

Predictive Relationships Between Organizational Climate, Teacher Stress, And Teacher Turnover Intention, Susan L. Roebuck
Predictive Relationships Between Organizational Climate, Teacher Stress, And Teacher Turnover Intention, Susan L. Roebuck
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The turnover rate for secondary school educators has increased to the highest in almost 30 years. Public teachers who leave teaching reported that general working conditions, increased job demands, and the inability to manage their workloads (organizational climate) contributed to their decision. The problem addressed in this study is that teacher turnover has negative impacts, including poor student performance and decreased teacher effectiveness of remaining teachers. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine the extent to which organizational climate and teacher stress predict teacher turnover intention. The theoretical framework applied to the interpretation of the statistical results …

Grit, Efficacy, Commitment And Career Planning, Mary Clare Newsham
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This current study advanced understanding of the career goal-setting and relevant goal-related attitudes to the career planning process. Specifically, this study evaluated how career goal commitment, career goal self-efficacy and grit affect career goal structures and effort. A multidimensional career goal commitment scale was developed to differentiate intrinsic (affective) from rational types of commitments. Findings supported affective career goal commitment as consequential to the completeness of career goal structures and in career-relevant effort. Also, career goal self-efficacy was found to predict career planners’ self-efficacy for shorter term performance.

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
Due to declining college enrollment rates and intense competition to recruit students to attend one's college or university, we must avoid the limitations of bounded awareness (i.e., wemust think outside the box) when marketing our institution. This paper examined a College of Business teaming up with University Admissions to host a live on-campus event targeted at high school juniors and seniors. The event allowed students to be involved hands-on with numerous competitions, networking events, and the potential to win scholarship monies. We investigated if experiences of this nature are effective tools to increase student interest and enrollment. This study used …

Decreasing Post-Operative Ventilator Time In The Cardiovascular Surgical Patient: A Nursing Education Quality Initiative, Amanda J. Bruno Roberts
DNP Scholarly Projects
Extended mechanical ventilation times after open heart surgery can contribute to complications prolonging recovery and length of stay, as well as increasing mortality. Standardized staff education of immediate post-open-heart recovery and ventilator weaning protocols, combined with the use of ABCDE and VAP bundles can reduce these complications. At Hospital X during summer of 2022, the average length of time patients remained mechanically ventilated after open heart surgery increased. After an initial needs survey was distributed to nursing staff, a set of novel QR codes was created to simplify and centralize training for staff in the ICU to facilitate early extubation …

Cultivating Sense: Cultural Change In The Prosecutor's Office, Shih-Chun Steven Chien
Scholarly Works
Prosecutors exercise broad discretion. They are widely viewed as the gatekeepers of the criminal justice system. To date, studies on prosecutors in different jurisdictions have largely focused on how to conceptualize, manage, and eventually control the exercise of prosecutorial discretion. Scholars have recently turned their attention to the importance of internal organizational management and leadership's role in changing office culture as a means to regulate prosecutorial discretion. But we have limited empirical evidence as to how changes occur within a prosecutor's office and what precise role organizational leaders play during this process.
This Article constructs a new paradigm for the …

Theses and Dissertations
Healthcare is the fastest growing industry in the United States and globally. Economists forecast that as the population grows and life expectancy increases, the healthcare sector will continue expanding to meet consumer needs domestically and globally. Population aging and the emergence of global pandemics has substantially increased the demand for healthcare services and has created volatile, complex, uncertain, and ambiguous conditions that ignite social, economic, and workforce shifts within and outside the organization. While these factors require growth and agility within healthcare organizations, high turnover in the healthcare workforce threatens these organizations’ ability to effectively fulfill their mission. The high …
