Leadership Styles In Ncaa Division I Athletic Administration And Their Relationships To Job Satisfaction, Valerie Gomez
Leadership Styles In Ncaa Division I Athletic Administration And Their Relationships To Job Satisfaction, Valerie Gomez
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
As an industry, college athletics has become a focal point of much attention and scrutiny as a result of increasing moral and ethical scandals, as well as lucrative media and personnel contracts. Scandals such as admissions fraud, academic cheating, and financial crimes are a cause for concern regarding the leadership within Division I athletic departments. Organizational and individual outcomes have been associated with leadership. While extant research has focused on the leadership of coaches and the athletic director, the leadership of the senior-level leadership team has been largely neglected. Given the structure of many Division I athletic departments, the senior-level …

Change And Innovation In The Institutional Army From 1860–2020, John A. Bonin, James D. Scudieri
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article showcases the understudied institutional Army, the generating force, as a critical prerequisite for overall strategic success. Competition, crisis, and conflict require more than the manned, trained, and equipped units that deploy. This article analyzes six case studies of institutional Army reforms over 160 years to examine adaptation in peace and war. The conclusions provide historical insights to inform current practices and fulfill the Army’s articulated 2022 Institutional Strategy.
The Right People In The Wrong System: Examining The Tension Between Nonprofit Individuals And Organizational Structure, Erin Vong
Master's Theses
Nonprofit organizations pursue missions of social good while still operating within the confines of systems of oppression, creating a tension between organizational values and operational success. Previous research focuses on the micro-level role of individuals and the macro-level role of ideologies that create these tensions for nonprofit workers in these spaces. Through a qualitative case study, this thesis seeks to uncover the meso-level role of organizational structures in the experiences of nonprofit workers. The research questions that guided this case study were (a) How does one organization present equitable working conditions for its staff? (b) How do staff at this …

Interest Convergence And Neoliberalism: Effects On Entry-Level Staff Of Color Who Perform Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion In Higher Education, Jesse N. Avila
Master's Theses
Higher education was not originally built to benefit people of color. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are many ways in which universities seek to change higher education. However, higher education has a staff retention problem and is at risk of losing more than half of its current workforce. Retention problems also impact entry-level staff of color who perform DEI in universities. Through a lens of interest convergence and neoliberalism, this qualitative study gathered the experiences of entry-level staff of color who perform DEI in student affairs, looked at how their experiences are shaped by the structures of the university, and …

Predicting the Risk of Falling with Artificial Intelligence
Abstract
Background: Fall prevention is a huge patient safety concern among all healthcare organizations. The high prevalence of patient falls has grave consequences, including the cost of care, longer hospital stays, unintentional injuries, and decreased patient and staff satisfaction. Preventing a patient from falling is critical in maintaining a patient’s quality of life and averting the high cost of healthcare expenses.
Local Problem: Two hospitals' healthcare system saw a significant increase in inpatient falls. The fall rate is one of the nursing quality indicators, and fall reduction is a key performance indicator …
Improving Timely Sepsis Care Through Staff Education Within The Emergency Department, Shirley Chen
Improving Timely Sepsis Care Through Staff Education Within The Emergency Department, Shirley Chen
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: This project was implemented to decrease patient fallout rates through timely compliance with sepsis management according to the SEP-1 bundle. The SEP-1 bundle is already implemented in the emergency department. However, a microsystem assessment indicated barriers are preventing the achievement of the SEP-1 bundle milestones.
Context: This 16-bed emergency department (ED) at an urban Bay Area hospital provides 24-hour emergency services to individuals who suffer from medical injuries, accidents, and other serious health conditions. A random audit of the electronic health system (EHS) revealed that this emergency department consistently fails to meet the sepsis management time goals by 90%. …
Exploring And Identifying Healthcare Leaders Competencies Required For Effective Decision Making In A High Velocity Environment To Achieve Sustainability Under The Regulatory Compliance Tenets Of The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act, Sylvester Foote
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background and Purpose of the Study: Healthcare organizations face challenges in efficiently accommodating increased participant demands with limited resources and capacity. The modern reimbursement environment prioritized the maximization of operational efficiency and the reduction of unnecessary cost (i.e., waste) while maintaining or improving quality. As healthcare organizations adapt, significant pressures are placed on leaders to make difficult operational and budgetary decisions (Hamrock, Eric, et al., 2013).
As healthcare goes through this transformation within its high velocity environment defined as environments in which there is rapid and discontinuous change in demand, competitors, technology and /or regulations, such that information is often …

Problem: Providing high-quality sepsis care in a San Francisco Bay Area emergency department (ED) is an organizational priority, however Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Service (CMS) SEP-1 sepsis bundle compliance has decreased to an average of 79% compliance since October of 2022. It was revealed that CMS SEP-1 sepsis bundle compliance issues have resulted in increased patient fallouts.
Context: A microsystem assessment was conducted by the quality improvement team to help identify gaps in practice. After an assessment survey of nursing staff, it was revealed that barriers such as physician order sets, lack of communication, lack of staffing during peak …
Educating Labor And Delivery Nurses On Evidence-Based Birthing Positions To Promote Fetal Descent During First And Second Stage Labor, Sophia Nguyen
Educating Labor And Delivery Nurses On Evidence-Based Birthing Positions To Promote Fetal Descent During First And Second Stage Labor, Sophia Nguyen
Master's Projects and Capstones
The goal of this project was to increase confidence of labor and delivery nurses in utilizing evidence-supported birth positions during the first and second stages of labor in order to aid in fetal descent and labor progression. Current statistics demonstrate climbing trends in cesarean deliveries, which have been associated with increased maternal morbidity and mortality. One nurse intervention that can reduce failure to progress, a main contributor to cesarean sections, is the use of various evidence-supported maternal birth positions such as ambulation, assisted squat, sitting, backwards sitting, lunging, throne, side-lying with peanut ball, hands-and-knees, and throne position. This evidence-based practice …
Increasing Compliance Through Nurse Education On The Bundle, Zachary Harrison-Evans
Increasing Compliance Through Nurse Education On The Bundle, Zachary Harrison-Evans
Master's Projects and Capstones
In an effort to decrease complications and events connected to sepsis in the ED, there is room for improvement with relation to sepsis care and compliance rates. Timely sepsis management and gains in compliance/adherence rates are hindered by SEP-1 fallouts and requirements related to knowledge gaps concerning sepsis bundle procedures, nurses' attitudes about implementing the protocols, and disparities in nurse/physician order sets. It has been determined that the use of standardized protocols and order sets are not being utilized. This is a process gap and a critical area for improvement. Inadequate fluid and lactate documentation, a lack of education, and …
Experiences Of People With Serious Mental Illness Seeking Services At Community Mental Health Centers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Emily Leickly
Experiences Of People With Serious Mental Illness Seeking Services At Community Mental Health Centers During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Emily Leickly
Dissertations and Theses
Community mental health centers (CMHCs) have been underfunded and overburdened since Reagan-era disinvestment and the United States' move toward neoliberalism. Rates of mental illness have been rising consistently, particularly in Oregon, as CMHCs face continuing financial pressures and staff retention issues. This was before the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, we are still trying to understand the ongoing pandemic's impact on people with serious mental illnesses (SMI). Most of the studies in this area thus far are quantitative, and first-hand accounts of the pandemic from people with SMI are largely absent. Additionally, research in this area fails to draw on critical alternative …
Chapter 6- The Mentoring Context: Securing Institutional Support And Organizational Alignment, James Y. Taylor, Greg Dart
Chapter 6- The Mentoring Context: Securing Institutional Support And Organizational Alignment, James Y. Taylor, Greg Dart
Making Connections
A university’s mission and vision statements are the guiding documents that create a framework by which the institution can accomplish its goals. All university initiatives are tied back to that mission and vision, and alignment is essential for university support of bottom-up initiatives. No matter how mentoring is structured, one area that is essential is proper internal institutional support and alignment with the mission of the institution. Focusing on the context in which the formal mentoring program occurs, this chapter outlines the importance of executive support, mission and vision alignment, incentivizing participation for both mentors and mentees, and how mentoring …

Indigenous Health Faculty Publications
The adoption of tele-mental health by mental health professionals has been slow, especially in rural areas. Prior to 2020, less than half of mental health agencies offered tele-mental health for patients. In response to the global health pandemic in March of 2020, mental health therapists across the U.S. were challenged to make the rapid shift to tele-mental health to provide patient care. Given the lack of adoption of tele-mental health previously, immediate training in tele-mental health was needed. This article describes collaborative efforts between two mental health technology transfer centers and one addiction technology transfer center in rural regions of …
Creativity Training Needs Assessment For Homeland Security Enterprise: A Case For Creative Thinking, Alexis L. D'Amato, Samuel T. Hunter
Creativity Training Needs Assessment For Homeland Security Enterprise: A Case For Creative Thinking, Alexis L. D'Amato, Samuel T. Hunter
Reports, Projects, and Research
Creativity, specifically creative problem solving, is often excluded from Homeland Security Enterprise efforts to train and develop their workforces. To determine if this lack of training was a key knowledge gap in the communities, we drew on organisational creativity literature. Using the personnel databases O*NET and Careers in the Military Database, we conducted a training needs assessment by identifying relevant job tasks, knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) that align with the creative process. More specifically, we sought to identify the need for creative problem-solving training and designated creative thinking time (e.g. red teaming) to influence innovative intelligence capabilities. Based on …

Chapter 5- Needs Assessment And Data Analytics: Understanding Your Constituencies, Neal Legler
Making Connections
Needs assessment is an important early step in the development of a mentoring program because it helps ensure that program resources go toward improving prioritized institutional results. Needs assessment should involve key stakeholders, organized into a needs assessment committee, and then follow a systematic process to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and identify existing organizational needs. Needs are defined as the gap between desired organizational results and current results. They should be considered holistically and at all levels of the organization. As needs are identified, the needs assessment committee works with stakeholders through a combination of group management …
Brand On The Run: The Effects Of Internal And External Stakeholder Communication Of Corporate Rebranding Efforts, Abby Vandiver
Brand On The Run: The Effects Of Internal And External Stakeholder Communication Of Corporate Rebranding Efforts, Abby Vandiver
Honors Theses
A company’s most valuable asset is its brand. Not just limited to its name and logo, a brand is loosely defined as the identity of an organization. A strong brand identity can create strong customer loyalty. Changing even a part of this identity can cause confusion and ultimately revenue loss. This study examined how business owners and marketers communicate with their stakeholders when they decide a rebrand is necessary. After researching current literature on this topic, businesses in Oxford, Mississippi which have undergone a rebrand in the last decade were recruited to answer questions. Ten organizations participated either through interview …

Recovering A Missional Ecclesiology: A Framework For Reviving Congregational Mission Within The Baptist Union Of Victoria, Gayle Hill
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT This project is an intervention to develop a theological and theoretical framework
that will become the foundation for a future curriculum for recovering a missional ecclesiology for the pastors of the Baptist Union of Victoria (BUV). Despite mission being central to the overall vision of the BUV, declining numbers, the post-COVID context in Victoria, and an overarching post-Christian and pluralistic context have significantly challenged the centrality and functioning of mission across our denomination. The impetus of this project was the observation that our churches were floundering rather than flourishing in the missional space. Many chronic and acute provocations were …
Rebuilding Grid Governance, Joel B. Eisen, Heather E. Payne
Rebuilding Grid Governance, Joel B. Eisen, Heather E. Payne
BYU Law Review
As climate change sharpens the focus on our electricity systems, there is widespread agreement that the institutions that govern our electric grid must change to realize a clean energy future in the timescale necessary. Scholars are actively debating how grid governance needs to change, but in this Article we demonstrate that current proposals are insufficient because they do not contemplate “rebuilding.” This Article defines “rebuilding” as ending entities tasked with grid governance and creating new ones to take their place. We propose what no one else has: an overarching framework for rebuilding any grid governance institutions.
This Article discusses when …

Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The occurrence of childhood trauma in the school setting is an ongoing and pervasive issue. Students impacted by trauma frequently display challenging and problematic behavior, and educators lack the trauma-informed care needed to help them heal. These students often go untreated, and their trauma continues to impact them and those around them. This project aims to review the current literature on childhood trauma and how educators can better support students affected by trauma. The trauma-informed training associated with this project will offer tools, curricula, and resources that educators can implement on their campuses.

Evaluating Equity: Examining Inclusionary Practices From Educational Organizations To Improve The Education Experience Of Lgbtqia+ Students, Jillian G. Torrento
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This qualitative study explored the ways in which education policy and practices within public schools are addressing the needs of minoritized populations with a particular focus on LGBTQIA+ students. This study first employed a document analysis to investigate the federal, state, and district-level equity practices that are mandated or elective in addressing the needs of marginalized populations and LGBTQIA+ students. Secondly, a critical discourse analysis was conducted to examine the specific language, word choices, and symbols found within the public documents that signify equitable practices pertaining to minoritized student populations and the LGBTQIA+ community. Ultimately, the goal of this study …

Searching For Nonbinary And Trans Inclusion: A Call To Action For Leadership Studies, Jody Condit Fagan, Ari Emilia Short
Libraries
Academic studies of leadership have historically taken a binary view of gender. A literature review was conducted to search for any scholarly work inclusive of trans and nonbinary identities. Across three academic databases and five leadership journals, only 11 such sources were found. These results were reviewed to explore themes across their findings as well as suggestions for future research. The analysis of the 11 sources’ findings and recommendations offer guidance for expanding conceptions of gender in leadership; for enhancing leadership education; and for developing a more complete research agenda for gender and leadership studies. Suggestions are also offered for …
Global Perceptions Of Space: The Interior Designer's Role, Ansley C. Elliott
Global Perceptions Of Space: The Interior Designer's Role, Ansley C. Elliott
Honors College Theses
Interior designers need to show and share awareness of cultural inclusivity in design solutions to create a positive experience for all end users. In order to do this, interior designers need to gain an understanding of how people from various geographical locations perceive space and, as a result, behave and connect in public environments. This study explored existing literature on human factors in design, such as proxemics, territoriality, anthropometrics, cultural dimensions in business practices, and inclusivity in design. The research methodology included a Qualtrics survey on cultural background and demographic data; three-dimensional renderings of a public restaurant and a workplace; …

What Happens When A Company's Marketing Strategy No Longer Mirrors The Shopping Trends Of The American Consumer: A Case Study Of Sears, Roebuck And Company, Savannah Burnett
Honors Theses
Once America’s largest mass merchandiser, Sears is a name that remains recognizable for many people. Throughout our country’s history, the U.S. retail industry has often shifted alongside its country’s major historical events. However, one major corporation who once mirrored the ebbs and flows of the United States economy slowly faded out of the minds of the American consumer. This thesis seeks to answer if Sears’ fall from grace was a direct reflection of American consumer trends.
Secondary data was gathered through books accessed from the university library, newspaper articles, scholarly journals, and online news sources, as well as the company’s …

Barriers to the successful implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education and outreach initiatives are being documented across higher education institutions as DEI policies and protocols are gaining attention. Despite growing attention to promote DEI in higher education institutions, there remains a need to examine barriers preventing DEI efforts in a systematic way, particularly in Extension education contexts to formulate strategies to promote DEI. We present an expert, consensus-based framework to identify the most salient barriers to successful DEI implementation in Extension. We also discuss opportunities for Extension practitioners to overcome salient barriers with tailored mitigation strategies.
