Conversational agents are becoming more common in the health and wellness domains in part due to assumptions regarding potential improvements in individuals’ outcomes. This paper presents initial findings from a review of conversational agent use in healthcare for chronic conditions and well-being. A search of the literature was performed on electronic databases PubMed, ACM Digital Library, Scopus and IEEE Xplore. Studies were included if they were focused on chronic disorder management, disease prevention or lifestyle change and if systems were tested on target user groups. This paper investigates the health domains, the user profiles and reasons why conversational agents may …

Moose (Alces Alces) Herbivory Is The Main Driver Of Spatial And Temporal Variation In The Nitrogen And Carbon Content Of Balsam Fir Foliage, Jasmine Fairbanks Terry-Shindelman
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
To adequately manage forested ecosystems in the face of climate change, there is an urgent need to study how tree growth and biochemistry vary in response to changes in weather and levels of herbivory across different landscape types. However, few studies have assessed how both free-ranging herbivore populations and weather influence the foliar chemistry of boreal tree species over relatively large temporal and spatial scales. In this study, I assessed the extent to which the nitrogen (N) content and the carbon-to- nitrogen (C/N) ratio in the foliage of Balsam fir (Abies balsamea), a key boreal forest species, was …

Changes In Poplar Digestibility Due To Overexpression Of Laccase Genes, Fnu Arunima
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Woody biomass, particularly poplar, is a sought-after feedstock for lignocellulosic biofuels because of its year-round availability and high productivity. Because of cell wall components like lignin, poplar is inherently resistant to enzymatic saccharification. The experiment aims to determine whether the controlled overexpression of laccase genes alters the biomass composition and whether it can create poplar that is more digestible than the wildtype.
Three sets of transgenic poplar (Populus tremula x alba) samples were evaluated: laccase 18, laccase 27, and STTM. Laccase 18 samples, an target of miRNA397a was overexpressed along with Laccase 27. Short Tandem target Mimic (STTM) technology …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Northern white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) mitigate the increased energetic costs of severe winter conditions through obligate migration to densely congregated areas with abundant conifer cover, a behavior referred to as yarding. “Deer yards” in the Western Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan are principally located within the reduced snowpack and increased ambient temperature microclimates of densely canopied eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) stands, but specific drivers of long-term site fidelity and utilization are largely uncharacterized. As an important game species of high economic and cultural value and a keystone herbivore with critical impact of plant community composition and structure, identifying winter yarding …
Knowledge Discovery On The Integrative Analysis Of Electrical And Mechanical Dyssynchrony To Improve Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, Zhuo He
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a standard method of treating heart failure by coordinating the function of the left and right ventricles. However, up to 40% of CRT recipients do not experience clinical symptoms or cardiac function improvements. The main reasons for CRT non-response include: (1) suboptimal patient selection based on electrical dyssynchrony measured by electrocardiogram (ECG) in current guidelines; (2) mechanical dyssynchrony has been shown to be effective but has not been fully explored; and (3) inappropriate placement of the CRT left ventricular (LV) lead in a significant number of patients.
In terms of mechanical dyssynchrony, we utilize an …

Women, International Human Rights Law, And The Right To Adequate Housing In Africa, John Mukum Mbaku
Emory International Law Review
In many African countries, the rights of women and girls to adequate housing are under threat and remain vulnerable to violation by state- and non-state actors. This is so even though these rights are guaranteed by international human rights instruments and national constitutions. Of particular note is the existence of customary laws that discriminate against women and frustrate their ability to realize the right to adequate housing. To enhance the ability of women to realize their right to adequate housing, each African State must domesticate the various international and regional human rights instruments that guarantee this right in order to …

Small Mammal Community Structure And Bait Preference In Missouri Prairie Patches, Sofia L. Orlando
Small Mammal Community Structure And Bait Preference In Missouri Prairie Patches, Sofia L. Orlando
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Ecological community studies provide insights on how species interact with biotic and abiotic factors in an ecosystem. Community assembly is dynamic and often mediated by stochastic processes or deterministic properties. Establishing patterns in community composition could help to predict the suitability of a patch, which is crucial in endangered ecosystems. Small mammals are a model indicator for community change as their populations experience perplexing fluctuations. Many mechanisms have been proposed to drive small mammal species composition, but inconsistencies in past studies warrant further investigation. A previous study on prairie patches in Missouri revealed that there was an unknown catalyst for …

Quality Improvement Project To Assist In Implementation Of Prediabetes Screen Protocol, Kyai Forney
Quality Improvement Project To Assist In Implementation Of Prediabetes Screen Protocol, Kyai Forney
Doctoral Projects
Prediabetes is a reversible condition that causes blood glucose levels to be higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. When one has prediabetes, the cells in the body do not respond normally to insulin, and insulin acts like a key to letting blood sugar into cells to use energy. The pancreas produces insulin to try to get the cells to respond, but eventually, the pancreas has a challenging time keeping up, and the blood sugar level rises causing prediabetes (Lehrman, 2021). A person can have prediabetes for years with no obvious symptoms, so …

Cftc & Sec: The Wild West Of Cryptocurrency Regulation, Taylor Anne Moffett
Law Student Publications
Over the past few years, a turf war has been brewing between the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (“CFTC”) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) over which agency should regulate cryptocurrencies. Both agencies have pursued numerous enforcement actions over the cryptocurrencies they believe to be within their jurisdiction. This turf war has many moving components, but the focus always comes back to one question: which cryptocurrencies are commodities, and which cryptocurrencies are securities? The distinction is important because the CFTC has statutory authority to regulate commodities, whereas the SEC has statutory authority to regulate securities. This Comment rejects the pursuit …
