Soil rebuilding represents a major challenge in the recovery of abandoned quarries. In this study, we explored the possibility of using reconstructed Technosols, to achieve soil rebuilding goals at an abandoned quarry site. We first investigated the use of a mixture containing commercial manure and limestone debris (LD) as pedotechnomaterials for an “ad hoc” (re)constructed Technosol (CT), for the recovery of an opencast limestone quarry in one of most concentrated quarry areas in the world. In a field experiment, we tested and monitored different pedotechnosystems (PTSs) made up of constructed Technosol + pasture species + different Mediterranean plant species. Specifically, …

Black Boarding Academies As A Prudential Reparation: Finis Origine Pendet, Roy L. Brooks
Faculty Scholarship
With billions of dollars pledged and trillions of dollars demanded to redress slavery and Jim Crow (“Black Reparations”) the question of how best to use these funds has moved into the forefront of the ongoing campaign for racial justice in our post-civil rights society. Reparatory strategies typically target the norms and structures that sustain racial disadvantage wrought by slavery and Jim Crow. The goal of such transitional reparations is to extinguish the menace of white supremacy and systemic racism across the board. Restructuring in housing, education, employment, voting, law enforcement, health care, and the environment—social transformation—is absolutely needed in the …

Examining The Management Of Second Chance Schools: A Case Study Of Secondary School For Teen Mothers In Kenya, Nancy Chebet
Master of Education
Teen pregnancy in Kenya is on the increase and is widely attributed to the prolonged closure of schools because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and widespread exposure to irresponsible sexual behaviours and exploitation. Approximately 13,000 girls dropped out of school in 2021 due to teenage pregnancies. However, since children command the right to education and education is a priority in sustainable development goals, the feminist movement has established ways to ensure teen mothers are educated, in Kenya, there is the rise of schools designated for teen mothers. Therefore, the study sought to examine how these schools are managed this is because …

The Role Of Exercise In Parkinson’S Disease, Mohannad A. Almikhlafi
Neurosciences
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive widespread neurodegenerative disorder affecting the brain. It is characterized by dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Current therapeutic options ease the symptoms of PD; however, they have multiple undesirable effects and do not slow the disease progression. Exercise by itself has many positive impacts on general health. In this review, the positive impact of different forms of exercise were found to improve motor and non-motor symptoms in PD. Exercise effects is mediate by multiple mechanisms, including the upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor, and autophagy regulating proteins; and …

Three Essays On Health, Food, And Agricultural Economics, Saber Feizy
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This dissertation comprises three distinct but interrelated projects that explore the intersection of agriculture, nutrition, and economics. The first project investigates the impact of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) food programs on the health outcomes of its participants. Using fixed effects models and a matching algorithm, the study finds that while conventional fixed effects models indicate a significant effect of CSA participation on diet-related medical expenditures, our modified time-heterogenous fixed effects model did not find a meaningful effect. The results of the matching method are consistent with those of our modified model.
The second project examines racial disparities in the prevalence …

Reconstructing The Germination Pathway From The Rafflesia Seed Transcriptome, Venkata Siva Sankar Maddu
Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-
Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) produces the largest flowers in the world but has no stems, roots, or leaves. It is a holoparasitic angiosperm that derives all its nutrients from its host vine, Tetrastigma. All species are also threatened with extinction, but propagating it has been incredibly challenging. Its germination from seed has never been observed. The thesis aims to reconstruct the germination pathway of Rafflesia from its published seed transcriptome to gain insight into its molecular genetics and understand what germination genes can be stimulated to facilitate infection of its host for ex-situ propagation. The published seed transcriptome of Rafflesia speciosa was …

Juniperus communis is distributed over a large geographical area mainly in the Northern Hemisphere across multiple continents making it the most known and medically used species among 75 other Juniperus species. One of the main traditional uses of J. communis that has been proven by several studies is its antidiabetic properties. An ethanolic extract of J. communis berries has shown promising antidiabetic results leading us to investigate its phytochemical constituents and to identify the active compounds that work through peroxisome proliferators–activated receptor (PPAR) α and γ receptors. Activation of both receptors by a drug candidate will achieve more benefits and …

BACKGROUND: The opioid overdose and opioid use disorder epidemics are concomitant with increased metabolic and CVD risk. Although opioid use disorder causes adverse pregnancy outcomes, the offspring’s cardiovascular health is understudied. We hypothesized that offspring exposed to in utero morphine exposure (IUME) would show increased CVD risk factors and endogenous opioid system dysregulation.
METHODS: Sprague Dawley dams were treated with saline (vehicle, n=10) or escalating doses of morphine (5–20 mg/kg per day, SC, n=10) during gestation. Cardiovascular and metabolic parameters were assessed in adult offspring.
RESULTS: Litter size and pups’ birth weight were not different in response to IUME. Female …

A Mini Review Of What Matters In The Management Of Nas, Is Esc The Best Care?, Enrique Gomez Pomar
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
As the use of opioids and polysubstance by pregnant women has increased over the years, there has also been a sharp increase in cases of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Classically, infants affected by NAS have been cared for in neonatal intensive care units resulting in an increase of healthcare expenditure and resource utilization as well as separation from the families. Consequently, the Eat, Sleep, and Console (ESC) tool was developed and promoted as a novel method that focuses on maternal/infant dyad during hospital stay while decreasing the use of pharmacological interventions and therefore decreasing the length of stay and healthcare …
The Satiating Potential Of Plant Proteins Transiting The Upper Gut., Leo Nunn
The Satiating Potential Of Plant Proteins Transiting The Upper Gut., Leo Nunn
Theses
Increasing the feeling of fullness through modulation of satiety hormones by dietary proteins may be a promising daily approach in the prevention of unnecessary weight gain and in the maintenance of a healthy weight over our lifetime. The effects of animal sourced proteins on satiety hormone (GLP-1, PYY and CCK) has been well documented. However to meet the EU Green Deal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, a 15-20 % dietary shift to plant proteins is required. This thesis examined the satiating potential of six plant protein ingredients, Teff, Oat Fibre, Lentil Protein Isolate, Buckwheat, Quinoa and Strong …
The Association Of Burden And Social Engagement With Depression In Caregivers Of Adults By Age, Danielle Leigh Forbes
The Association Of Burden And Social Engagement With Depression In Caregivers Of Adults By Age, Danielle Leigh Forbes
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
As life expectancy begins to increase, the need for familial caregivers is growing. The aging of care recipients often means that those providing care continue to get older as well. Previous studies focus little on the differences between older and younger caregivers and rather combine them all into one group. The purpose of this study is to understand whether the caregiving experience is related to the age of the caregiver. Depression, burden, and social engagement, based on the descriptors of leisure, work, and social relationships, were studied in conjunction with the age of the caregivers. This study consisted of 63 …
