The Role Of Intraoperative Esmolol Vs Ketamine In Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, Rebekah Bitar

Nurse Anesthesia MSNA Student Capstones

As the understanding of opioid dependence mechanisms and origins in the adult population continues to evolve in the United States, so does the pursuit of alternative avenues for analgesia. Many opioid substance-use disorder patients can trace the origins of their dependence to routine prescription and administration of opioids during surgical procedures (Bohringer et al., 2020). One such procedure where opioids are frequently utilized for intraoperative and postoperative analgesia is laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Incidence of gall bladder disease is closely related to obesity (Hines & Marschall, 2018). Gallstone disease continues to be a common and costly health problem affecting 10 to 20% …

Rhythms Of The Earth—Editorial Introduction, Karim-Aly S. Kassam, Morgan Ruelle, Christopher P. Dunn, Raj Pandya, Felice Wyndham

Sustainability and Social Justice

This special issue of GeoHealth, entitled Rhythms of the Earth: Ecological Calendars and Anticipating the Anthropogenic Climate Crisis, is a transdisciplinary articulation of a methodology of hope to confront the multiple injustices of the Anthropocene. One of the greatest challenges of the climate crisis is the lack of predictability at the scale of communities where impacts are most immediate. Indigenous and rural societies face an ever shifting “new normal” through increasing inconsistency in the seasonality of temperature and precipitation, as well as greater frequency of extreme weather events. With global food systems dependent on local and small producers, climatic variability …

Understanding Equine-Assisted Therapy And Its Impact On The Counseling Field, Christian N. Brown

Theology Undergraduate Work

The usage of horses in the physical healing process of humans (hippotherapy) has been carried out since the second century; however, the usage of horses in the mental and emotional healing process has been less common. In recent years, more research has surfaced addressing this phenomenon, supporting the theory that horses can also assist in the mental and emotional healing of humans. Emotional support animals have been increasingly popularized, but horses’ abilities to mirror human emotions and sense those in pain are extraordinary. The mental-emotional benefits of horses have not yet been universally recognized as a valid and effective form …

These stray dogs pose a significant threat to public health and safety, with an estimated 20,000 people dying every year from rabies transmitted by stray dogs. In addition, stray dogs are often malnourished, injured, and exposed to harsh weather conditions. Building sheds for stray dogs can help address this problem, as it provides a safe and comfortable place for the dogs to sleep and helps …

Agriculture: A Feminist Commodity Chain Analysis, Shriraksha Mohan Apr 2023

Agriculture: A Feminist Commodity Chain Analysis, Shriraksha Mohan

Student Papers in Local and Global Regional Economies

Feminist Commodity Chain analysis enables economists to situate women within the framework of the global commodity chains, and recognize their roles in creating values in various stages of the commodity chain. Unlike in the “realist” commodity chain, when feminist commodity chain concepts are applied to agriculture, there is emphasis on women as the agents in various nodes of agriculture commodity chain, from the beginning of farming, with sowing of seeds, to the end as consumers of agricultural products. This approach allows researchers to understand how gender ideologies shape the social and structural hierarchies within commodity chains, and account for how …

Background: Pressure injuries in acute care patients cause thousands of deaths and billions of losses annually. The Braden Scale has been an American standard of pressure injury risk assessment yet demonstrates poor predictability in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) population. Recent evidence indicates that the Jackson/Cubbin Scale performs similarly or superiorly to the standard.

Purpose: To compare the Jackson/Cubbin Scale to the Braden Scale in assessing ICU patients’ risk for pressure injuries and resulting nursing interventions. Methods: Using a pretest-posttest and comparative design, trained nurses in two ICUs applied both Jackson/Cubbin Scale and Braden Scale to assess patients’ risks twice …

Addressing Verbal Aggression To Reduce Workplace Violence Against Nurses, Rebecca Harris Apr 2023

Addressing Verbal Aggression To Reduce Workplace Violence Against Nurses, Rebecca Harris

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Almost three-quarters of non-fatal workplace violence-related injuries requiring time away from the workplace occur in the healthcare and social services sector. More than 90 percent of assaults against nurses are from patients. Verbal aggression was correlated with physical violence and could contribute to nurses’ stress and dissatisfaction and compromise patient care. Policies and guidelines addressing verbal aggression against nurses are often unclear and not well-supported by evidence. This can leave nurses unprepared to recognize and respond to verbal aggression or threats of physical harm without compromising their safety.

Aim: This health policy analysis aimed to explore a range of …

The Economic, Mental Health, And Social Stressors During The Covid-19 Pandemic Among Native Americans In South Dakota, Savannah E. Lukkes

Honors Thesis

American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities test positive for COVID-19 and experience higher mortality than other racial and ethnic groups. These high rates of vulnerability could be connected to the systemic inequalities that have been experienced for centuries. This study aimed to compare socioeconomic stressors, concerns, and mental health experiences during the early COVID-19 pandemic between AI/AN and non-AIAN populations in South Dakota. The study sample (n=1,586) was grouped by AI/AN and non-AI/AN status based on self-identification of being AI/AN alone or in combination with another race/ethnicity. Participant responses to socioeconomic stressors and concerns (e.g., top concerns, level of concern, self-isolation, …

Virtual Patient/Family Communication In The Acute Care Setting, Kathleen Defigueiredo Apr 2023

Virtual Patient/Family Communication In The Acute Care Setting, Kathleen Defigueiredo

Translational Projects (Open Access)

Patient and family-centered care strategies see patients and families as valuable healthcare team members. Such strategies thus treat these groups as essential clinical partners in providing safe, high-quality care. Participation, collaboration, and shared decision-making are central to this framework. Historically, hospitals have relied on physical presence at the bedside as a prerequisite to engaging families in the shared decision-making process. Visitor restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic removed the primary strategy for family participation: physical presence. Healthcare organizations rapidly deployed mobile devices to help minimize the exposure of healthcare providers and provide video visits for family members. This deployment was often …

The Effects Of Exercise On The Lipid Profile Of Extracellular Vesicles, Tesha Kerr Apr 2023

The Effects Of Exercise On The Lipid Profile Of Extracellular Vesicles, Tesha Kerr

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

We sought to ascertain the effect of different types of exercise (aerobic training and resistance training) on the lipid profile of extracellular vesicles. Thus, we had participants perform bouts of AT and RT and rest (control) and collected blood samples from them immediately after (timepoint 0) and 30 minutes after (timepoint 30) exercise. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) were isolated from plasma of participants using cushioned-density gradient ultracentrifugation (C-DGUC). Small EV size, morphology, and protein markers were determined using nanoparticle tracking analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and western blot, respectively. Additionally, we performed untargeted lipidomics on the sEV isolate. We found that …

Migrants Sans Papiers: The Impact Of Cantonal Program And Policy Discrepancies On Undocumented Migrant Healthcare Utilization In Switzerland, Denise Peng Apr 2023

Migrants Sans Papiers: The Impact Of Cantonal Program And Policy Discrepancies On Undocumented Migrant Healthcare Utilization In Switzerland, Denise Peng

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

While Switzerland houses what is generally considered one of the best healthcare systems globally, regional policy discrepancies leave undocumented migrants (UDM) in precarious conditions that threaten the nation’s claim to universal health coverage. Critical analyses of existing UDM-catering structures in different cantons, the Swiss Confederation member states, reveal that local discrepancies in healthcare utilization are functional gradients of cantonal support and public endorsement. Relationships with these authorities are instrumental in steering health outcomes not only with program funding and outreach but also management of studies to better understand UDM health determinants and inform future preventative measures.

UDM services and initiatives …

Its applications, both present and future, competing genetic modifiers, advantages and disadvantages, and the ethical dilemmas …

Following In California’S Footsteps?: Pennsylvania Eliminates The De Minimis Exception In State Wage And Hour Claims, Lauren E. Stahl Apr 2023

Following In California’S Footsteps?: Pennsylvania Eliminates The De Minimis Exception In State Wage And Hour Claims, Lauren E. Stahl

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”), employers risk receiving wage and hour violations if they fail to compensate employees for all “hours worked” or fail to adhere to minimum wage and overtime requirements. The de minimis doctrine provides an exception to this general rule and excuses employers from compensating employees for insignificant amounts of time spent on otherwise compensable off-the-clock work activities. Examples of de minimis off-the-clock work activities include waiting for a computer to load or waiting to log onto a computer network. These activities are considered de minimis because they take only a minute or less, and …

Assessing And Characterizing Marijuana Use Disorders (Dsm-5) — National Survey On Drug Use And Health, United States, 2020, Alejandro Azofeifa-Ujueta

Dissertations

Despite that marijuana (cannabis) is still considered, under federal law, an illegal Schedule I drug, marijuana is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States. National trend data has shown that the prevalence of marijuana use has increased over time, particularly among those aged 18 years and older. Some individuals can use marijuana without harm; however, long-term and heavy marijuana users may experience health consequences, including marijuana use disorders (addiction). For the last 20 years, existing national and statelevel epidemiological, surveillance, and research data have analyzed marijuana use disorders (MUD) using previous diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV). There is limited …

Racial Isolation, School Police, And The “School-To-Prison Pipeline”: An Empirical Perspective On The Enduring Salience Of “Tipping Points”, Michael Heise Apr 2023

Racial Isolation, School Police, And The “School-To-Prison Pipeline”: An Empirical Perspective On The Enduring Salience Of “Tipping Points”, Michael Heise

Buffalo Law Review

Two broad trends inform public K-12 education’s current trajectory. One involves persisting (and recently increasing) school racial isolation which helps account for an array of costs borne by students, schools, and communities. A second trend, involving a dramatically increasing police presence in schools, is evidenced by a rising school resource officer (“SRO/police”) presence in schools. Increases in the magnitude of a school’s SRO/police presence correspond with increases in the school’s propensity to engage law enforcement agencies in student disciplinary matters which, in turn, help fuel a growing school-to-prison pipeline problem. While these two broad trends propel two distinct research literatures, …
