Ecological Living In Nepali Food Systems: A Synthesis Of Circular Nutrient And Knowledge Flows In The Kathmandu Valley, Kaitlyn Feely Apr 2023

Ecological Living In Nepali Food Systems: A Synthesis Of Circular Nutrient And Knowledge Flows In The Kathmandu Valley, Kaitlyn Feely

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Researching food-systems in Nepal can feel like drinking from a fire hydrant. Sixty-six percent of the population is directly involved in agriculture and a diverse set of ecocultural understandings influence the practice across the country’s landscapes, ranging from the Himalayas to urban centers to southern plains. In the Kathmandu Valley and peripheral hills where I conducted my research, seemingly any spare land was under cultivation, enabled by fertile ground, optimal climate, and market potential. But despite the prevalence of farming in daily life throughout the country, Nepal’s food system is not domestically self-sufficient. A complex web of imports and exports …

The Impact Of Usu Extension On Public Nutrition And Health, Heidi Leblanc

Outcomes and Impact Quarterly

There is a need to provide effective nutrition information and education to the public to enable consumers to make wise dietary choices. As the relationships between diet, physical and mental health, and disease prevention become clearer, the promotion of healthy eating behaviors and lifestyles for both youth and adults has received increased attention in recent years. With high levels of obesity, chronic disease, and poor dietary habits, there is a need for non-formal nutrition education that addresses individual and family health and wellness. The Public Nutrition and Health Education program at Utah State University (USU) Extension seeks to decrease the …

Exploring The Development Of An Agribusiness Ecosystem For Singapore: Lessons From Taiwan, Kuo-Chang Fu Apr 2023

Exploring The Development Of An Agribusiness Ecosystem For Singapore: Lessons From Taiwan, Kuo-Chang Fu

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The COVID-19 pandemic and complex global circumstances have prompted a heightened level of apprehension about food security in Singapore. With a land area of slightly over 700 square kilometers, of which a mere 1% is dedicated to agricultural purposes, Singapore's overall level of food self-sufficiency is less than 10%. Historically, Singapore has relied on imports to address its food deficits. However, due to the pandemic's impact and geopolitical tensions, which have resulted in instability within the global supply chain, Singapore is now compelled to re-evaluate its approach to food security. Consequently, there has been a substantial focus on exploring strategies …

Leveraging Digital Technologies For Management Of Peripartum Depression To Mitigate Health Disparities, Alexandra Zingg Apr 2023

Leveraging Digital Technologies For Management Of Peripartum Depression To Mitigate Health Disparities, Alexandra Zingg

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Health disparities are adverse, preventable differences in health outcomes that affect disadvantaged populations. Examples of health disparities can be seen in the condition of peripartum depression (PPD), a mood disorder affecting approximately 10-15% of peripartum women. For example, Hispanic and African-American women are less likely to start or continue PPD treatment. Digital health technologies have emerged as practical solutions for PPD care and self-management. However, existing digital solutions lack an incorporation of behavior theory and distinctive information needs based on women’s personal, social, and clinical profiles. Bridging this gap, I adapt Digilego, an integrative digital health development framework consisting of: …

An Examination Of The Vaginal And Endometrial Microbiota Of Heifers And The Effects Of Selenium Supplementation On Microbiome Composition, Kobe S. Perry Apr 2023

An Examination Of The Vaginal And Endometrial Microbiota Of Heifers And The Effects Of Selenium Supplementation On Microbiome Composition, Kobe S. Perry

Honors Theses

Selenium, an essential trace element, is involved in many biological processes serving catalytic, structural, and regulatory roles through mechanisms that are not entirely understood. Due to its health effects from either deficiency or toxicity, selenium has been well-studied, with an emphasis towards selenium deficiency which has been shown to cause immune and reproductive issues in animals. To address deficiency, different forms of supplementation have been used, yet few studies have examined selenium’s effects on the reproductive microbiome based on the type of supplementation (i.e., inorganic or organic forms). By examining bovine vaginal and endometrial mucosal samples via 16S gene sequencing, …

The Exceptional European Experience: An Analysis Of Education Abroad's Impact On College Students And The Field Of Nutrition And Dietetics, Mckenna Moore

Honors Theses

Education abroad has become a very popular avenue over the past century for college students from the United States to be immersed in a culture different from their own and experience significant growth, personally and professionally. Italy is a country that has a culture different from that of America and the contrast becomes even more evident after time abroad. United States citizens desire immediate satisfaction and this desire is accompanied through services such as drive-thrus, delivery services, and online shopping. Americans also often revolve their food experience around quantity and speed at which it is served. Italians, on the other …

Political Reality And Crypto Regulation, Carol R. Goforth Apr 2023

Political Reality And Crypto Regulation, Carol R. Goforth

Chapman Law Review

This Article compares and contrasts the SEC’s and CFTC’s approach to crypto regulation, as impacted by their respective missions and scope of authority. It then considers some of the largest gaps in the current regulatory system as it applies to cryptoassets. In light of that information, the Article then looks at three of the most widely discussed legislative proposals for regulatory reform and considers the potential impact of such legislative intervention. The conclusion of the Article is that some expansion of CFTC authority may be necessary and desirable, but political realities are likely to dictate small, incremental steps towards broader …

Tracking The Donor Dollar: A Critical Examination Of Ngo Impact, Joshua Werth Apr 2023

Tracking The Donor Dollar: A Critical Examination Of Ngo Impact, Joshua Werth

Senior Honors Theses

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) comprise the backbone of civilization. Whether intended or not, governments fail to improve social situations, financial standings, and spirituality comprehensively. NGOs attempt to cover these areas. From Angola to Zambia, countless NGOs exist around the world; however, many fail due to a misplaced focus internally on the annual donations received rather than externally on the disenfranchised. Additionally, even if NGOs manage to stay afloat, they will need help procuring funds and then distributing those resources with the most effective impact for the impoverished. The honors thesis proposed will attempt to determine more effective impact measurements for NGOs, …

The Effect Of Caffeine Supplementation On Figure Skating Jump Height, Hailey Jordan Apr 2023

The Effect Of Caffeine Supplementation On Figure Skating Jump Height, Hailey Jordan

Senior Honors Theses

The consumption of caffeine has many physiological effects beneficial to athletic performance and has great potential as an ergogenic aid. Significant studies support the idea that caffeine supplementation enhances muscular endurance, muscular strength, and muscle power output, all important components to a technically advanced figure skating jump. A single-blind within-subjects study in which participants from the Liberty University Figure Skating Team tested their off-ice loop jump height over two trials (caffeine and placebo), investigated the relationship between caffeine and figure skating jump height. The results of the study suggest that caffeine supplementation increases off-ice loop jump height.

Snacking Consumption Among Adults In The United States: A Scoping Review, Jean Pierre Enriquez, Elizabeth Gollub

Faculty Publications

Snacks are a staple of the American diet, contributing to approximately 20% of energy intake. Most U.S. adults consume one to three snacks/day, yet few reviews have focused on snacking among this population. This scoping review was conducted to characterize snacks and snacking occasions among U.S. adults to further inform healthy eating practices. The protocol was prepared following the PRISMA-Extension for Scoping Reviews. Three web databases were used to identify articles using snacking or eating occasions as primary or secondary outcomes among U.S. adults. A search strategy was developed using subject headings, truncation, and phrase searching in the title and …

Horizontally Transferred Genes As Rna Interference Targets For Aphid And Whitefly Control, Honglin Feng, Wenbo Chen, Sonia Hussain, Sara Shakir, Vered Tzin, Femi Adegbayi, Todd Ugine, Zhangjun Fei, Georg Jander

Faculty Publications

RNA interference (RNAi)-based technologies are starting to be commercialized as a new approach for agricultural pest control. Horizontally transferred genes (HTGs), which have been transferred into insect genomes from viruses, bacteria, fungi or plants, are attractive targets for RNAi-mediated pest control. HTGs are often unique to a specific insect family or even genus, making it unlikely that RNAi constructs targeting such genes will have negative effects on ladybugs, lacewings and other beneficial predatory insect species. In this study, we sequenced the genome of a red, tobacco-adapted isolate of Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) and bioinformatically identified 30 HTGs. We then …

In the published version on page 5, subchapter 5.1 Heart and large arteries, right column, the paper by Booth et al. (2021) was erroneously quoted as describing DMX cardiac neurons conducting at about B-fiber speed. However, these authors only described DMX neurons in general and not specifically cardiac neurons. Thus, the term “cardiac” should be deleted in lines 7 and 9. Also, in line 7, conduction speed should be 6 m/s.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a challenging health concern worldwide. A lifestyle intervention to treat T2D is difficult to adhere, and the effectiveness of approved medications such as metformin, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), and sulfonylureas are suboptimal. On the other hand, bariatric procedures such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are being recognized for their remarkable ability to achieve diabetes remission, although the underlying mechanism is not clear. Recent evidence points to branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) as a potential contributor to glucose impairment and insulin resistance. RYGB has been shown to effectively lower plasma BCAAs in insulin-resistant or T2D patients that may help …
