Protein plays a vital role in every human’s life. This macronutrient is essential in the diet for cell formation and repair. Protein powder, a nutritional supplement, is used to help build muscle, repair tissue, and make enzymes and hormones. Protein powder has also been found to help people lose weight and tone their muscles. Since some people have trouble getting enough daily protein, specifically athletes and elderly individuals, this study aims to research and learn the effects of substituting almond flour, whey protein powder, and soy protein powder in place of all-purpose flour to achieve a quality-tasting, protein-packed peanut butter …

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) has latently infected over two billion people worldwide (LTBI) and caused ~1.6 million deaths in 2021. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection with Mtb will affect the Mtb progression and increase the risk of developing active tuberculosis by 10–20 times compared with HIV- LTBI+ patients. It is crucial to understand how HIV can dysregulate immune responses in LTBI+ individuals. Plasma samples collected from healthy and HIV-infected individuals were investigated using liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and the metabolic data were analyzed using the online platform Metabo-Analyst. ELISA, surface and intracellular staining, flow cytometry, and quantitative reverse-transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) were …

A Haptoglobin (Hp) Structural Variant Alters The Effect Of Apoe Alleles On Alzheimer's Disease, Haimeng Bai, Penelope Benchek, Asha R. Kallianpur, Jonathan L. Haines, William S. Bush
Faculty Scholarship
Background: Haptoglobin (HP) is an antioxidant of apolipoprotein E (APOE), and previous reports have shown HP binds with APOE and amyloid beta (Aβ) to aid its clearance. A common structural variant of the HP gene distinguishes it into two alleles: HP1 and HP2. Methods: HP genotypes were imputed in 29 cohorts from the Alzheimer's Disease Genetics Consortium (N = 20,512). Associations between the HP polymorphism and Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk and age of onset through APOE interactions were investigated using regression models. Results: The HP polymorphism significantly impacts AD risk in European-descent individuals (and in meta-analysis with African-descent individuals) by …

BACKGROUND: Late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is an effective and reproducible method for characterizing myocardial infarction. However, gadolinium-based contrast agents are contraindicated in patients with acute and chronic renal insufficiency. In addition, several recent studies have noted tissue deposition of free gadolinium in patients who have undergone serial contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. There is a clinical need for alternative forms of magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents that are acceptable in the setting of renal insufficiency. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three days after 80 minutes of ischemia/reperfusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging was performed …

Old animals display significant alterations in sleep-wake patterns such as increases in sleep fragmentation and sleep propensity. Here, we demonstrated that PR-domain containing protein 13 (Prdm13)+ neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) are activated during sleep deprivation (SD) in young mice but not in old mice. Chemogenetic inhibition of Prdm13+ neurons in the DMH in young mice promotes increase in sleep attempts during SD, suggesting its involvement in sleep control. Furthermore, DMH-specific

Identification Of A Gabaergic Neural Circuit Governing Leptin Signaling Deficiency-Induced Obesity, Yong Han, Yang He, Lauren Harris, Yong Xu, Qi Wu
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
The hormone leptin is known to robustly suppress food intake by acting upon the leptin receptor (LepR) signaling system residing within the agouti-related protein (AgRP) neurons of the hypothalamus. However, clinical studies indicate that leptin is undesirable as a therapeutic regiment for obesity, which is at least partly attributed to the poorly understood complex secondary structure and key signaling mechanism of the leptin-responsive neural circuit. Here, we show that the LepR-expressing portal neurons send GABAergic projections to a cohort of α3-GABAA receptor expressing neurons within the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus (DMH) for the control of leptin-mediated obesity phenotype. We identified the …

Modern systems need the type of resilience we see in nature. By increasing resilience, we are increasing systems ability to adapt and successfully recover from difficult situations. By observing processes within a biological multi-agent system, we can develop approaches to increase resilience of a wide range of artificial systems, from transportation networks to homeland security. One source of design inspiration to improve artificial systems is natural systems. In this research, we are particularly interested in observing and documenting natural processes which allow multi-agent systems to detect and recover from faults, even when the fault is an unknown, faulted member (e.g. …

With NASA’s current plans to establish a permanent base on the Moon, it becomes vital to develop strategies for improving the life support systems through in-situ resource utilization. A key limitation of existing systems is that most food is provided through resupply missions while plant production capabilities limited in scale. Instead, Moon regolith contains many essential elements that are vital for plant growth and the remainder could be supplemented with waste products from humans or plants. Additionally, including microbial communities can aid the availability of nutrients in the substrate, similar to traditional farming practices.

The Effect Of Gibberellic Acid Treatment On The Growth Of Dwarf Setaria Mutations, Audrianna Torrey, Mariana Gutierrez, Shelby Nolde, Agnes Adams, Andrés Acuña, Maia Busi, Hannah Edwards, Joshua Neely
2023 Student Academic Showcase
Dwarfism is a common mutation found in many organisms and Setaria (millets) is no different. In millets and other plants, a reduction or complete lack of production of necessary hormones such as Gibberellic acid (GA), auxin, or Brassinosteroid can cause a mutant’s vertical and sometimes outward growth to be significantly reduced when compared to a wild type of the same variety. A typical solution to this mutation is the application of a hormone solution to allow the plant’s cells and organs to have access to the hormones needed to continue growing at an average rate. We decided to test an …

Assessment Of Muscular Anatomical And Physiological Development During Injury Rehabilitation, Nicholas Andrews, Petey Mumford, Lauren Tighe
2023 Student Academic Showcase
After an injury occurs, there are many physiological regressions that occur. These regressions lead to altered muscle thickness, muscle length, strength and power potentials, motor recruitment, and neuromuscular control. These variables are further exacerbated if the given injury requires surgical intervention. Rehabilitation aids in reducing these regressions and is important both pre-surgery and post-surgery when intervention beyond rehabilitation is needed. Ultrasound imaging can be utilized to monitor the progression of a muscle's specific muscles anatomy. The muscles of interest are dependent upon the injury, The purpose of this study is to monitor short-term muscular adaptations to establish their importance in …
