This study investigated the effects of hydroponic corn fodder on the growth performance of buffalo calves. Twelve Bulgarian Murrah buffalo calves were divided into two treatment groups: T1, fed with Napier grass and starter feed concentrates, and T2, fed with Napier grass, starter feed concentrates, and hydroponic corn fodder, replacing 50% of the starter feed concentrate. The study found no significant differences between the two groups' average total weight gain and average daily gain. However, the average daily feed intake was significantly higher in T2, possibly due to the tender and young nature of the hydroponic corn fodder. Dry matter …

Stigmasterol has been studied for its numerous biological effects on various metabolic diseases, but its potential role as a ubiquitous biomolecule in the plant kingdom is still in its infancy. Efficient utilization of stigmasterol’s properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, and self-assembly, is necessary for the food industry to effectively prevent microbial growth in food., in addition, to delaying rancidity by slowing down lipid oxidation. This study was conducted to determine some pomological properties and phytochemical contents such as total monomeric anthocyanin, total phenol, antioxidant activity, sugar, and organic acid of the chokeberry cultivars Nero and Viking, which are being cultivated in Türkiye, in 3 different harvest periods (the last week of August, the first week of September, and the second week of September). The highest total monomeric anthocyanin (794.63 mg/100 g), total phenol (5006.60 mgGAE/100 g), and antioxidant activity (79.33%) were obtained in the first harvest period of Nero. Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This review addresses alternative technologies in edible mushroom drying. Principles of application and the literature are highlighted. The objective is to identify and discuss the potential advantages and drawbacks and to elaborate future applications of electrohydrodynamic, freeze, infrared, and microwave technologies in mushroom drying. The advantages of these alternative technologies can be listed as better quality, improved energy efficiency, and reduced processing time. Each method is promising in adding value to dried mushroom products. On the other hand, replacement of the conventional drying technique requires process optimization practices and feasibility analysis, especially for combined applications.

The objective of this paper was to determine the effects of rapeseed genotype and nitrogen fertilization for dual purposes, i.e., on seed yield for human consumption and on the quantitative and qualitative value of harvested residues as feedstock to produce heat energy. Sweet basil is a perishable green herb that has a short shelf life after harvest. Techniques to extend its shelf life and prolong its storability may be commercially beneficial. In this study, the impact of different ultrasound powers on the postharvest quality and bioactive compounds of sweet basil during storage was investigated. The main goal of this work was to study alkaline pretreatment of hazelnut shells (HSs) by utilization of NaOH and Ca(OH)2 with or without glycerol. The highest lignin recovery was obtained for NaOH-glycerol-pretreated HSs. This research also determined the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis where xylanase and cellulase were added to the pretreated residue. The highest amount of lignin of 63.2% was achieved when NaOH was used with glycerol in the pretreatment process. These findings revealed that the NaOH-catalyzed glycerol pretreatment applied in this study has great capability to be used in industrial applications.

The purpose of the current study was to produce a blackthorn-based beverage with improved nutritional value. In this regard, several beverages were formulated using sugar and citric acid. Then, the effects of the different food constituents on the in vitro recovery and antioxidant capacity of the bioactive substances in the formulations were determined. This study demonstrates the viability of sustainably utilizing watermelon rind, a byproduct, by developing intermediate moisture food (IMF) through osmotic dehydration with honey as a sugar substitute. Response surface methodology and an artificial neural network were employed to optimize the process, and enhanced solid gain and water loss were achieved. The findings revealed that temperature exerted the most significant influence, followed by the solution-to-rind ratio, immersion time, and osmotic solution concentration, impacting water loss and solid gain in the IMF product. The strawberry tree (Arbutus andrachne L.) is a wild edible fruit that grows naturally in the Mediterranean climate zone, including Türkiye. In this study, the genetic morphological, biochemical, and genetic diversity of 10 superior strawberry tree genotypes growing naturally in Antalya Province in Türkiye were investigated. Morphological and biochemical characterization were performed based on some important fruit characteristics. In addition, genetic variation was detected at the molecular level using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. A plum pox virus (PPV) susceptible traditional cultivar (Besztercei Bt.2) and a clone of a PPV resistant autochthonous landrace, Nemtudom (Nábrád) of the hexaploid European plum (Prunus domestica) were used to identify and characterize an isoform of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor, eIF(iso)4E, a host susceptibility factor required for PPV infection in plum. The cDNA and intron sequences of the eIF(iso)4E gene and the modeled 3D structure of the encoded proteins revealed sequence alterations that are not expected to critically influence the structure and function of the protein. Heat stress (HS) is expected to become a significant abiotic stressor with the continued rise in global temperatures, severely limiting the development and production of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), especially in arid and semiarid regions. Thus, this study looked into the impact of HS on the antioxidant activity, as well as the biochemical responses of bell pepper seedlings under varying temperatures (40, 32, and 25 °C) for 5 days. Mango is a fruit consumed worldwide, but generates wastes, which have potential to be valorised, because they possess compounds with demonstrated positive implications for the consumer’s health. For this reason, in the present study, biscuits with mango pulp and powders developed from its wastes were developed. The chemical composition was determined for the mango peel, pulp, and seed according to AOAC procedures, but also for the mango biscuit and a reference. The total phenolic content (TPC) was assessed with the Folin–Ciocâlteu method, while the antioxidant potential was tested using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Rhizoctonia is a complex genus in the phylum Basidiomycota comprised of several taxa distributed across different families in the order Cantharellales. Many species in the genus have been identified as plant pathogens, saprobes, or beneficial mycorrhizal symbionts of orchids. Rhizoctonia isolates are divided into binucleate and multinucleate and then classified into anastomosis groups (AGs) based on the ability of compatible hyphae to fuse. Binucleate Rhizoctonia species (Ceratobasidium spp.) are classified into 21 AGs identified with letters (AG-A to AG-U). The thesis comprises three studies. The first study in this thesis (Chapter I) focused on a six-year corn field experiment to assess the influence of conservation agricultural practices on soil properties and their long-term effects on water-use efficiency and yield. Non-tillage management did not significantly reduce soil bulk density compared to conventional tillage, as no differences were observed between non-tillage and tillage systems throughout the 6-year experiment. Background: Preeclampsia is a life-threatening pregnancy illness characterised by the onset of hypertension in a non-hypertensive woman after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Studies have connected preeclampsia to significant adverse effects on the mother and the newborn, a common obstetric emergency in Kenya. Determinants of poor perinatal outcomes in babies born to preeclamptic mothers have not been intensively investigated.
Objective: The study evaluated the determinants of perinatal outcomes among neonates born to mothers diagnosed with preeclampsia at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital between July 2021 and June 2022.

Adding context to educational environments has shown benefits in a variety of cases, but it can be difficult to generate relatable and relevant real-world materials with which students can engage meaningfully. Community engaged learning (CEL) is a high impact educational practice that delivers place-based context to course content through a partnership with community organizations. Untreated diabetes mellitus leads to development of microvascular and macrovascular complications affecting heart, nerves, kidney, and eyes. While the etiological mechanisms of diabetes-associated retinopathy and cataract have been well characterized, the time kinetics and the severity of diabetes-mediated injury to the ocular surface and its various components like tear film, goblet cells and glycocalyx, has not yet been investigated. These pathological changes can potentially cause dry eye and corneal injury including epithelial erosion, impaired wound healing and keratopathy. Stress and depression are noted as major psychological determinants impacting health outcomes for childbearing women. African American (AA) women have been shown to experience “wear and tear” or “weathering” over time with increasing complications. Via secondary analysis, the current study explored the association between stress, depression, and maternal and infant health complications and examined a potential trend of “weathering” emerging between younger and older AA childbearing adolescents. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved primary study examined birth experiences and mental health of adolescents up to nine months postpartum. The current study noted significant associations between postpartum depression (EPDS scores) and …
