The program uses a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approach and indoor group meetings to foster positive …

Voices From The Frontier: Stories Of Nurse Practitioners Working In Remote Settings, Lynn Jakobs May 2023

Voices From The Frontier: Stories Of Nurse Practitioners Working In Remote Settings, Lynn Jakobs

Dissertations

Frontier communities are the most sparsely populated and geographically remote areas in the United States. Residents of these communities often lack access to healthcare resources of any kind. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are more likely than physicians to practice in these areas and provide a vital link in the frontier healthcare safety net.

This narrative inquiry into the practice experiences of frontier NPs informs the discipline of nursing regarding the significant contribution frontier NP practice makes to the delivery of frontier healthcare. This inquiry creates a repository of stories upon which nurse leaders, health care policy makers, and nurse educators interested …

Development Of New Chemical Probes To Delineate The Polyamine Regulation & Molecular Strategies To Unravel Protein Polyamination, Vennela Tulluri May 2023

Development Of New Chemical Probes To Delineate The Polyamine Regulation & Molecular Strategies To Unravel Protein Polyamination, Vennela Tulluri

Theses and Dissertations

Polyamines such as putrescine, spermidine, and spermine modulate critical cellular processes, including gene expression and cell proliferation. Cellular polyamine regulation is a complex mechanism controlled by three different proteins: Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), Antizyme (OAZ), and Antizyme Inhibitor (AZIN). While ODC is directly involved in polyamine biosynthesis, OAZ, and AZIN regulate the ODC activity via protein-protein interactions. The dysregulation of ODC, OAZ, and AZIN leads to elevated polyamines in numerous pathologies, making them attractive targets for controlling polyamine levels. Besides regulating polyamine synthesis, OAZ modulates polyamine transport. However, the precise mechanism remains elusive. In this research, we discuss our approach to …

Liberty And Justice For Some - Experiences Of Marginalized Children On The World War Ii United States Home Front, Courtney Polak

Great Plains Graduate Review

Many scholars have discussed the experiences of the home front and its significant contributions to the war effort. However, the study of children in World War II home front has not been widely examined. Even more so, the experiences of minority children are rarely discussed. Youth of African Americans, those of German and Japanese descent, and the poor classes experienced a drastically different home front than the mainstream culture. The experiences of children, especially, are not addressed widely as they are further ignored as a group without political or economic power. Yet, numerous primary source accounts explain how these marginalized …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Cisheteronormativity is prevalent throughout college STEM discourses and classrooms. In this paper, we present findings from a U.S. based study focused on the experiences of collegiate STEM students with minoritized identities of sexuality and gender (MIoSG) as the backdrop for discussing how current harmful ideologies in STEM perpetuate cisheteronormativity through discursive practice. We propose that humanistic classrooms and pedagogy can work to dismantle cisheteronormative D/discourses in STEM and create MIoSG inclusive STEM classrooms and programs. Our findings highlight the ways participants experienced cisheteronormative D/discourses in their collegiate STEM contexts. We discuss how these experiences might be mitigated through humanistic educational …

Does Playing Different Game Genres Affect Obesity Levels In Gamers?, Zann Chua, Joshua Deleon, Navin Argunan

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

This paper examines the relationship between playing various gaming genres and its effect on obesity. While previous studies have generally associated gaming with obesity, some have highlighted that certain game genres, exergames, require gamers to be physically active to play the game, leading to a reduction in gamers’ weight. To study this relationship, we conducted a survey and analyzed the collected data using ANOVA and Regression Analysis. Our preliminary findings from one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA with interaction, indicates significant association between game genre and engagement per session with BMI. The interaction between them suggests that the effect of game …

Seasonal Changes In The Movement Rates And Activity Patterns Of Canada Lynx, Matthew Kynoch May 2023

Seasonal Changes In The Movement Rates And Activity Patterns Of Canada Lynx, Matthew Kynoch

Biological Sciences

An animal's temporal niche, or when it is active during the 24-hour day, is a fundamental aspect of its overall niche and ecology. Animals are confined to a temporal niche to maximize energetic gains while avoiding agonistic encounters with predators or intraguild competitors. An animal's temporal niche can be influenced by a variety of biotic and abiotic factors, and the temporal niche of predators is often established through a careful balance of prey behavior and the predator's physiological adaptations. This study examined the seasonal change of patterns of activity in Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) in Northern Alaska using both GPS …

Clearance Of Beta-Amyloid 42 (Aβ-42) And Tau Proteins In Alzheimers Disease (Ad), Alex Tackett

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and the main cause of dementia among the elderly worldwide. Despite intense efforts to develop drugs for preventing and treating AD, no effective therapies are available yet, posing a growing burden at the personal, medical, and socioeconomic levels. AD is characterized by the production and aggregation of amyloid 0 (A0) peptides derived from amyloid precursor protein (APP), the presence of hyperphosphorylated microtubule-associated protein Tau (MAPT), and chronic inflammation leading to neuronal loss. A0 accumulation and hyperphosphorylated Tau are responsible for the main histopathological features of AD, A0 plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), …

Impacts Of Sex, Biometals Homeostasis, And Dietary Fructose On Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Pathogenesis, Emilie A. Morrell

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a broad-spectrum liver disorder that ranges from simple hepatic steatosis to its more severe form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which is marked by hepatic inflammation and cirrhosis. Estimates indicated NAFLD prevalence is currently between 25-30% of adults worldwide. Currently, there are no treatment options for NAFLD other than weight loss, as the etiology of this disease remains elusive. Prior studies have indicated that NAFLD is likely a multifactorial disease arising from interactions between factors like: genetics, nutrition, age, sex, hormone levels, lipid regulation, and biometals homeostasis. While prior studies have largely done an excellent job at …

The Chukchi are the Indigenous people of the farthest northeastern part of Eurasia, nowadays called Chukotka. It happens that, at the dawn of the 20th century, Chukchi culture became the focus of a landmark publication The Chukchee, authored by a luminary Russian ethnographer Waldemar Bogoras. Produced as part of the special series Publications of the Jesup North Pacific Expedition, this voluminous monograph, overwhelmingly, continues to be a go-to resource to learn about the Chukchi customs, spiritual beliefs, material culture, and way of life. As an Indigenous Chukchi scholar who, to my knowledge, is the first of my people to be …

Generalized Modeling Of Complex Dynamical Systems: An Application To The Stability Of Ecological Networks, Stefan Awender May 2023

Generalized Modeling Of Complex Dynamical Systems: An Application To The Stability Of Ecological Networks, Stefan Awender

Physics

Understanding the stability of food webs is crucial for resource sustainability and conservation of ecosystems, especially in the context of climate change. Specific models describe the biomass flow in food webs by a set of ordinary differential equations that require the explicit reconstruction of a mathematical expression for each of the interactions or processes, like predator-prey interactions, primary production, and mortality. Although specific models are rich with time-evolution information, limited access for empirical observation of these typically immense systems induce uncertainty in the data and approximations in the corresponding models that can threaten robustness or relevance of results. Generalized models …

METHODS: We included 3760 Look AHEAD participants with T2D and overweight or obesity randomly assigned to 10 years of ILI or diabetes support and education. We used k-means clustering techniques with …

Environmental And Demographic Drivers Of A Rapidly Expanding Sub-Arctic Moose Population, Vassily Sebastian Zavoico May 2023

Environmental And Demographic Drivers Of A Rapidly Expanding Sub-Arctic Moose Population, Vassily Sebastian Zavoico

Biological Sciences

Anthropogenic forces are dramatically altering the dynamics of many populations and ranges. A thorough understanding of drivers and mechanisms underlying population dynamics is needed to better understand reasons for range shifts and broaden our understanding of how environmental and demographic drivers affect population trajectories. In this thesis, I present two chapters that investigate the population dynamics of a rapidly colonizing moose (Alces alces) population in southwest Alaska. In the first chapter, I correlated environmental variables with demographic rates estimated using a multistate model and found that annual patterns of vegetation productivity and winter severity affected calf survival most strongly, followed …
